Various RSNs, or WatchESPN.

Taking the day off from the press box, in fact by the time this posts I should be in Pittsburgh. Instead I join the common folk in the stands. My son is coming along today so I get to be a fan (along with being dad). We’ve been looking forward to this. He wants to see the game, but he’s already been asking about a post-game trip to Aiello’s for pizza. Not sure about that, as I may have to insist on at least one more trip to Uncle Sam’s in Oakland. Might wrap it around swinging up to the Pete since he desperately wants to see the Lego Script Pitt.

GT looked bad last week against South Florida. Their special teams were nearly as bad as Pitt’s.

They’ve suffered injuries, but with GT it seems that they are very much a plug-and-play team. Especially at one of their Back positions. Meaning the injury may be minimal.

Ideally, you beat GT by having good solid drives that don’t let their offense get rolling and chew up the entire time. Pitt has won against them, but they haven’t been easy games. Even when Pitt has gotten out quick, GT has clawed their way back into it.

Pitt is 2-3 against GT since joining the ACC. Pitt won both games by 3 points. The three losses have all been by double digits.

I suspect we will all find out quickly whether Pitt is going to be in this game or not.

Last weekend I made the trek to Uncle Sam’s not knowing that it would be my last.

Rough week for the ‘burgh.

1. Mac Miller
2. Pitt
3. Steelers
4. Uncle Sam’s

Nice start against GA Tech, but the Panthers need to pass better.

Comment by Justinian 09.15.18 @ 12:11 pm

Kessman almost blew it.

Can someone please explain to me why making contact before the ball gets there ISN’T pass interference?

H2P!!!

Not surprised with the Pitt Win. Said so much before the game.

But Pitt just beat a FOUR Win football Team.

Nothing to get excited about.

Pitt could have come away respectable without the IDIOTIC trick play that ended up being intercepted.

As it is… very little respect, if any with the win.

But we’ll take it.

I applaud the effort of the defense. They had to be on the field the whole second hlf and held GT to 17 points.
Pitt’s left OL opened gaping holes and Ollison has shown quickness and elusiveness once he gets to the second level. Pitt could be a top 20 team if it did not play a H.S. quarterback who is limited to 15 yard passes.
I can not believe there is anyone left that believes Pickett can play at this level.
Pitt has to take risk or opportunity of playing one or the other transfer QB’s who are bigger and considerably stronger than Pickett.Consider Pitt’s running attack with a QB who could make the the defense take eight men out of the box.

When you have a substantial lead, late in the game, just don’t turn the ball over. Only throw safe passes or throw it away. Running backs should have both hands on the ball. Defensive coaches who become head coaches seem to have a problem with clock management.

Congrats to the boys for the win. The defense played a good game, Weaver and Wriginis were beasts. i hate to nit-pick but this is the third week we have played a decent first half then made no adjustments that worked. Oh well on to the Tarheels. Maybe we will finally beat them. HAIL TO PITT

Dennis Wagner,
With all due respect, I don’t think you know anything about football. Pickett is still a freshman (as far as games played) and is maturing quickly. Name a quarterback other than Peterman that Pitt has had in the last 10 years better than Pickett. And the transfers? Wow.

Comment by panther94 09.16.18 @ 12:21 am

He may become a good QB but in my opinion the talent is not there. This is from watching other freshman QB’s.Dan Marino was a freshman when I first saw him play. So was Alex Van Pelet. So is the QB from Alabama, Georgia, and several other college teams. I never played football true, played basketball, but in contemporary college football it is often the case the case that true freshman start at major colleges. Pickett had his redshirt burned last year so he is a sophomore.
I am not making my observation on his meager QB statistics from this year but on his lack of arm strength and physical size.
Pitt was the only D1 school that offered him a QB scholarship that is why he came to Pitt. We were desperate for QB’s. That can be check. This point was mentioned it in the PSU game when comparing the 2 QB’s.

I have to admit I was very surprised with the defense of the triple option, they did damn good.
Pickett can throw the ball he was very accurate and had some good down the field throws also with the help of the receivers. The line gave him good protection this game. The problem was a lack of some good scores in the second half. But, it was a good win for the kids.

Comment by Pitt Dreamer 09.16.18 @ 1:05 am

Pickett threw a ball 50 yards in the air while on the run. That’s a pretty decent arm. And he connected. Hell I dont think Tiny ever threw a ball over 25 yards in 4 years. Is he a machine gun like Dan Marino? No but not many are. He’s also still very young and not even done growing yet!! They said during the the PSU game that he’s grown an inch in the past year. So this is a guy still gaining strength and experience. And btw look at McSorley, not exactly machine gun Kelly and he’s short but he wins a lot of games. And he’s a giant douche which I don’t think Pickett seems to be. a W is a W. Let s take it and hopefully improving be week by week as the games get tougher. H2P

Good rebound win, even though it was a nail-biter. I predicted Pitt would win a close one and miss two extra points.

Turns out, GT missed the kicks and Kessman played really well. The punter had a good game as well pinning GT at the 4 yard line late in the game. Our D was tired and the long drive by GT ate too much clock.

All facets of the game looked better except the OC’s play calling in the 2nd half and KP’s deep throws. While he connected on a few they were all underthrown. Short passes were fairly accurate and he can work on the long throws to his motive that part of his game.

On to unc with a 2-1 record. Must win for numerous reasons.

H2P!

The question remains can we win consistently with the tenth ranked QB (counting Albany game) out of 14 QB’s ranked in the ACC. Plus his ranking is inflated by one of the variables yards gained and with him that is always 30% yards in bailing out of the pocket if he sees a seam rather than looking downfield for for his receivers.

It is difficult for us old timers who were at Pitt or just graduated before desegregation among the scools in the south. Our teams from 1975 throw the early eighties were loaded with talented players from the south. Hugh GReen, Ricky Jacky, Carlton Williamson, Micheal Woods, and numerous others.
If you want to see perhaps the best defense in college football or the most talented teams pull up these years on you-tube and see the quickness and strength of the top of college football.

Bear Bryant was tired of getting his ass kicked in bowl games so in the early eighties he scheduled 2 games against USC and Alabama got there ass kicked.
The Bear ended segregation in the southern athletics and along with the migration from up north by factories to the south for cheap labor the SEC was born and now has a strangle hold on college football.

Pitt will need to pick up the best of the fruit that falls from the tree (especially at QB) as transfers from these mega schools 4 deep to compete. They ought to establish a program to scout the SEC schools for disgruntled players in positions of need and offer them the chance to play. This program must abide by NCAA rules.
