**** Breaking News – ex-Terp WR Juwann Winfree has committed to Pitt this afternoon.****

My friends at Facebook’s Pitt Panther Fanatics asked me to draw up an offensive game plan for the Marine Bowl Pub Crawl on Sunday the 27th… the pre-game day festivities for our Panthers matchup with the Navy Midshipman.

I live about 30 minutes away from downtown Annapolis and we go there regularly for events and meals and such so here is what I recommend for maximizing the cheap drinks hosted by the listed bars (below) from 4:00-9:00 pm… along with some good food

One thing to note is that Annapolis is on the side of a hill and I’m going to list the places to go from the top of the hill down toward the waterfront and the City Dock.

If you look at a map of the Downtown area you see two large traffic circles and then a smaller one down at the waterfront.  The two larger ones are the “Church Circle” that is the western one and the other is the “State Circle” (State Capitol bldgs) a bit larger and to the east.

Capture

We don’t want to mess with the State Circle so we’ll begin our tour at the Rams Head Tavern which is on West Street (MD-450) just before getting to Church Circle. Do not be put off by the road name, MD – 450 is really just a big street.

The Rams Head is a chain of restaurants that are large enough for crowds and where you can eat if you want to. I highly recommend that if you’ll be drinking the rest of the evening you put something inside you. Ladies, I’ll be there at around 4:00 pm.

Next stop and right near the Rams Head is Stan and Joes, also on West Street, which is a sports bar.

After that I suggest you hit the Acme Grill which sits on Main Street (the shopping avenue from Church Circle to the Waterfront) ½ blocks below the circle. The Acme is a local party bar with good looking waitresses and a nice Sunday special: Salon Sundays:  $10 Select Bottles of Wine – $3 Select Vodka Drinks – $3 Craft Beers.  There we’ll see a lot of Navy wives…

Drunken girls

Rolling further downhill we get to Charlie’s Bar at Mangia – it is a casual sports grill bar and has great views of the City Dock at the waterfront – if you can get an outside seat I’d do that even if it is chilly.  This is a great place to watch the Annapolis world go by.

Curving around the waterfront circle you hit Armadillo’s bar  (never been there) then from there get over to of my favorite Annapolis haunts…

McGarvey’s Saloon and Oyster Bar. . This is an Annapolis favorite of ours and has been there for 40+ years. The food is good as is the atmosphere.  This is our seafood go-to place when we are up there.  Everything is fresh, presented well and tasty.  I strongly suggest you call McGarvey’s (Restaurant 410-263-5700) if you want to make it your dinner spot.  They may tell you to make a reservation and I’d do it as soon as possible.

I think McGarvey’s is an excellent place to end the evening because it is smack dab in the heart of Annapolis and is surrounded by other places to check out and enjoy.  It is also right at the City Dock where the bigger yachts tie up – and it is always fun to walk around them and dream.  Maybe someone will invite you onboard, if so Port is left and Starboard is right.…

Navy passed outTry to avoid the locals… Sunday is their only day off….

One restaurant that isn’t on the Pub Crawl list but that is our #1 place to eat in Annapolis is Galway Bay.  It is a smaller place but has excellent Irish fare and friendly people.  It is on 63 Maryland Ave.  Which is a street spurring off State Circle in an easterly direction.

For your Monday morning hangovers and empty stomachs I think Miss Shirley’s is the place to stagger into. I believe you can start drinking as soon as they open up at 7:00 am (I’ll see you there I’m sure). It is higher up above the Church and State circles and is located at 1 Park Pl, Annapolis, MD 21401

Here is how all those Pub Crawl places look on the map.

One thing to note: These are just eight of many, many places to eat and drink in Annapolis – I suggest that when you get to the City Dock at the waterfront you start walking around the other streets and the nooks, crannies and alleyways of the city.  It is an old and beautiful town and the history there is amazing.  Eating and drinking are fun as hell, especially before a Pitt game, but if you go to Annapolis and don’t explore then you are shortchanging yourself.

The Bowl Game doesn’t start until 2:30 so you have all of Monday morning to really enjoy the city.

BTW – the Facebook group Pitt Panther Fanatics (linked above) is a discussion about Pitt football and can be a lot of fun if you follow it.

agree about McGarvey’s. Been to Annapolis twice (neither for FB BTW) and McGarvey’s was a highlight both times

Quite a week in recruiting. Now two four star receivers coming, and Ffrench, one with a year of experience.
The two new guys will really push for playing time. May even be the starters, although Ford is pretty steady. Think we may see a transfer or two from the bottom of the depth chart?

Narduzzi is racking up studs. Does anyone know what our recruiting ranking is now after this week?

Man, I wish I was going to the game! Reed is spot on with his suggestions, McGarvey’s is my favorite place. Another suggestion for those gourmets among us, we found a fantastic store on upper Main St., Seasons Olive Oil & Vinegar store. I never thought that I could waste an hour of my life enjoying vinegar tasting, but I did! The wife & I ended up dropping $50 on virgin olive oils and complementing vinegars. Worth a stop in.
Anyone who has never been to Annapolis is in for a treat. It’s like a make believe town that you’d see depicted in a Hallmark special on TV. You will not be disappointed.

Bring home a victory!

Werner is hearing that an OC won’t be hired until after the bowl game. Media meeting with PN tomorrow, maybe will clarify

Another outstanding recruit.

Maybe Tim Salem is auditioning

Who knows what’s up with Winfree? Why suspended twice at Maryland? This will be the second kid transferring in who had problems

I believe in giving these kids a second and even a third chance if they learn, mature and can grow from the process

Yes, I’m still pissed off how poorly Shell was handled.

I’m also pissed I won’t make the Annapolis game. I was looking forward to Chaperoning you guys.

Reed, They taught us in the Coast Guard boating course, all the bigger words are on the right side. I had an O’Day Mariner when my kids were growing up.

I’ve never been to Annapolis. Maybe some day.

Thanks Reed for taking the lead… Look forward to meeting some of you…Hail to PITT

Comment by BigB 12.20.15 @ 8:26 pm

Awesome list, Reed. Probably won’t be too many boats making the turn into Ego Alley, but that’s always a site to see. Not too far from McGarvey’s.

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 12.20.15 @ 8:31 pm

Thanks Reed… Annapolis really is a nice place and you’ve laid it out pretty well.

Again, my one suggestion for people on GAME DAY… Oyster Shooters at McGarvey’s.

It’s a special of theirs and a GREAT way to get things started prior to Kickoff.

Comment by PittofDreams 12.21.15 @ 7:23 am

POD – I fully concur on the oyster shooters at McGarvey’s.

Reed – I hope to get to O’Callaghan late afternoon and will look for you on the crawl. I will be wearing a yellow cap with blue Pitt Script on it. Would be delighted to buy you a drink.

Great night meeting both Reed and BigB tonight during the pub crawl! For those of you who havent been to a bowl game, its a great chance to meet and connect with fellow Pitt fans.

I have no idea which team will win Monday, but Im leaving a winner either way. HTP
