Whitehead Has Surgery

Filed under: Uncategorized — Reed @ 8:16 am

Pitt safety Whitehead out 4-6 weeks after knee surgery

The knee surgery is not expected to affect Whitehead’s availability for Pitt’s training camp, which begins in early August. The surgery was first reported by the Beaver County Times.

Whitehead led the Panthers with 109 tackles this season, the most in school history by a true freshman, and was named the ACC’s overall and defensive rookie of the year.

Well that should put an end to his days on offense.

Why not use Weah on the Jet Sweep. Or Hill to make PoD happy. Those guys should both be able to turn the corner. Can they break a tackle like Whitehead? Not just about speed, lateral movement even more important. Dorsett and McCoy had it. No one changed direction better than them.

Just a clean-up of the knee. Surprised they waited this long if they knew about it. He will be fine and ready to go on both sides of the ball.

Damnit…. One guy we cannot lose for9/10. I’ve had 3 meniscus surgeries. It’s 6 weeks before you an even start working out. So August 9 th from today. That’s cutting it very close. Not a good sign !!

Hopefully since he is younger, Whitehead will heal a bit faster than you, Dan72…

I had 4 miniscus surgeries but all in my 50’s and Dan72 is correct about recovery But I am admittedly an old fart now with 2 total knee replacements who until recently hadnt seen my toes in a while. I have noticed that athletes do seem to recover much faster. Hope all goes well for him. Hail to Pitt

I had meniscus and played 6 weeks after. I was 21. Fu did mine.

Had my last knee surgery at 27, 38!years ago. It was butchery back then.
Was equating it with several of my basketball players over the last 10 years. If they have to cut and slice, it’s 6 weeks. If they
Arthroscopy, it’s 3-5 weeks. Those that can tolerate the pain can get a head start. It’s mostly braking adhesions letting the swelling go down. The ulnar nerve is a bitch and causes most of the pain.

Comment by Dan 72 06.11.16 @ 5:53 pm

Yes Dan mine was scoped. I was light running in 2 weeks no shit. Haha.

Comment by Upittbaseball 06.11.16 @ 6:16 pm

I had mine in 2004 and was back to work in 4 weeks. But why wait? This kind of injury is like a hernia and can only be fixed through surgery.

The point is we need all hands on deck 9/10! Why the F–k did they take so long to diagnose the injury?? Or did it just happen. My worst knee injury happened while I was playing semi pro ball in the summer in the Federation League. I was a relief pitcher but I got a suprise start and got crushed for 6 runs in the third and was taken out.

While the game was ongoing I was playing catch with a football beyond the outfield with my baseball spikes on. Remember the old long metal spikes? They caught in the turf and I tore everything in my left knee. Again, surgery was butchery back then.

UPitt… I am in awe of your recovery!

Comment by Dan 72 06.11.16 @ 9:44 pm

Upitt, you can’t expect Whitehead to be back in 6 weeks at full recovery like you were. Remember he is just a mere mortal.

He probably hurt it in the ‘voluntary’ off season workouts or playing BB or something.

These kids don’t just sit ob a couch after the season ends…

I had my knee scoped for the same thing 20 years ago. I was back at work in a week – rushed my return and my knee still bothers me.

Did you see where the Pitt baseball team had (5) five players taken in the 2016 MLB draft? Congrats to each of those young men…

Sticking with baseball – the ACC has four teams in the NCAA super regionals – BC (yes that’s right), Miami, Louisville and FL State.

Like Dan 72, I had my knee done about three years before arthroscopy. Really too bad, always been weaker and painful since. Surgery is so much improved since then. Ligament tears used to be career enders. I will be very surprised if Whitehead isn’t ready for PSU, but there are no guarantees, everyone is different. The worst thing to worry about these days are infections.
