Saturday Podcast; June 11th

Here is another installment of our Saturday Podcasts Series.

There really hasn’t been much going on with Pitt football lately – a couple of  recruits verballed  (Chris Peak’s recruiting podcast covers those and BB’s recruiting also) but mostly we have had to generate some subjects to talk about.

Today I’ll talk a bit about the recruiting articles we just had up on here and some other things, then historical subjects about what the Pitt program was like years ago and how things can make or break a team.

The reading here is from a Sport Illustrated article published Nov. 21, 193 titled “ANY OF US MIGHT HAVE DONE IT.”

After that 1982 regular season, when we were 9-2 and Becker death happened, we lost the Cotton bowl to SMU by a score of 7-3.   After averaging 27 ppg in the regular season we put up three.  That, I believe was a hangover from the preceding week.

We went 8-3-1 the next season then tanked to 3-7-1 the year after.  If you look closely you’ll see that our recruiting suffered a lot after that Becker incident also.  So many different things can affect a football program…

Note: Just as a heads up – I am zeroing in, with my daughter’s help, on figuring out how to do a conference call-in recording so that we can start a “Pitt Blather Round Table” where I would moderate and select some subject matters for two or three Blather readers to discuss and then post as a podcast.

My feelers out to Pitt fans about doing this have been well received and I think it would be nice to hear some other opinions on Pitt football other than mine.  Our written comments are great on here and generate some fantastic discussions but maybe a bit of a different forum to give and take on issues will be fun to do also.

I’ll keep all informed as to the details but keep your eyes open and I’ll be asking for test dummies soon.

I’m no dummy but I am opinionated so I’ll volunteer.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! That scream is from Ped Staters who are bemoaning the “unfairly” opening up victim’s to ridicule. LOL How can anyone who has attacked the victim’s so strongly and the few responsible PSU alums who finally did the right things eg VP Trustee Surma and Erickson take that position. N 31 days when the transcripts etc are released what Ped Staters attack the victims they are paying settlements to. (A judicial admission of misconduct). Lambrano take this where Sandusky roams.

I had forgotten the name of the young man Becker but that one incident made it look like Foge had lost control of his players – at least to the public.

Is that Barnes in the first row at the Pirate game a few down from KDE radio and TV jag Marty Griffin.

Comment by PittPT 06.11.16 @ 6:46 pm

Five did lose control of the team.
I remember three players in tv giving a press conference regarding players refusing to practice and Foge allowing them to play.

Pitt suffered from an acute lack of leadership when Becker met his death. I believe in Karma and ours was bad. Sherrill was a leader and when he left Pitt turned and found a host of great thinkers who believed their own hubris.

I would like to propose a new recruiting idea which would actually place a premium on talent evaluation and coaching.

I would propose an immediate increase in football scholarships from 85 to 100. Out of those 100, a team must keep a player on the roster, regardless
of circumstance for 4 years. As an example, if 5 player’s leave early for the draft, good for them. The university cannot add 5 schollies to the next class.

Additionally, the coach would not be able to use the old “it’s not working out how we planned speech and I think it’s best you move in a different direction so we can get more warm bodies in here to contribute. Also, all schollies are for 4 years guaranteed.

Dhuffdad.
Your proposal would decimate teams that did the best job of talent evaluation. It is possible to have many more than 5 leave early. So you would then deprive those who were the best evaluators from restocking their shelves by prohibiting them from replacing those scholarships.
That ain’t much of a carrot for the Wabbit.

Dhuff – Pitt used to do just that I believe – it a recruit stayed out of trouble and met academic standards he was able to stay on the roster and keep his scholarship for four years.

Now I’m sure we have dropped that unwritten policy.

Comment by Reed 06.12.16 @ 6:50 am

At first glance I like Dhuffdaddy’s proposal with the adjustment that schools could replace, kids that go pro, flunk out or leave of their own free will like Flacco.

However, the hundred limit would help the rich get richer, because they could hoard more elite players.

It was Schembeckler that whined when they reduced the limit (largely because of Johnny Majors), “How am I going to win now?”
