Basketball Notes, 3/16

Big feature piece on James Robinson from the Pitt News. Good read.

No formal ACC Network by July from ESPN? That will be an extra $3 million per year per school. The article suggests something that evolves will be a “multi-platform product” that gets branded as the ACC Network. I’m having trouble distinguishing that from what presently exists from the “ACC Network” at present that has some syndication and is shown streaming via ESPN3.

Buzz Williams, the VT head coach, is the more likely target by either TCU or Oklahoma State for the head coaching vacancies. No one is quite sure what Buzz Williams will do if offered. VT is in the NIT. Oklahoma State hasn’t formally fired Travis Ford. Oh, and Williams’ buyout with VT drops from $3 million to $1.5 million on March 24.

Wisconsin returned to the “swing” offense under Greg Gard. If you are looking to find out more about how it works, this is a good place to go.

The Swing offense is a 4-out patterned offense that has continuity. All five players are interchangeable, and spacing, screening, cutting and good passing are paramount. All five players learn to post up inside.

The offense is deliberate, often with multiple passes and places value on each possession with high percentage inside shots, or free-throws. Unlike some of the recent, newer offenses that utilize the dribble-drive as it’s main attack weapon, the Swing offense is truly a “team-offense” that places a premium on good passing, screening and cutting.

The Swing offense is used against man-to-man defenses and combines elements of the UCLA offense, the flex offense, and the triangle offense. There can be a number of entries into the offense, and there are counters for every kind of pressure defense. Numerous variations can be used. Set plays can be called as well.

Diagrams and everything if you are interested. There’s also some YouTube clip from Bo Ryan’s instructional DVD on the Swing Offense. Here’s another place to go.

Interesting article. Check out the fair market value of Pitt players based on annual revenue. Looks like Dixon is earning that paycheck based on the revenue his program is generating for the University.

The value listed in Tossing’s article is obviously based on program revenue. Louisville, Duke, Syracuse and Kentucky are notorious for the money they rake him based on attendance (Syracuse, Lville and Kentucky have the largest arenas) to go along with ticket prices and TV revenue.

Nonetheless, it’s good that Pitt is above the curve … however, will they be after this season due to declining attendance?

At least two double digit seeds made the Sweet 16 in 15 of the past 19 years; at least one made it in 28 of the past 31 years…. FOR ROC’S SAKE LET IT BE US.

Anyone eyeing any sleeper teams? I like Fresno State. Zags too, but they would play each other in the 2nd round.

Comment by tacocat 03.16.16 @ 9:27 am

Using the Department of Education revenue numbers results in a flawed analysis. On the DOE form reporting expenses is mandatory but reporting revenues is voluntary. So the methodology for providing revenues varies wildly from school to school. For example, in a typical year, there are several schools who on their DOE forms report revenues that equal expenses to the penny. What are the odds of that?

Interesting reading from Nate Silver’s group:

here’s a useless piece of information:

FB recruit DT Bryce Hargrove made Honorable Mention All-State Ohio in Div II basketball.

And last night, FB recruit Kaezon Pugh led Aliquippa to the state final game this Friday or Saturday .. he made 2 key free throws and a key assist in the last 18 seconds. Also had double figure rebounds and points

Comment by wbb 03.16.16 @ 11:30 am

Chase Pine will be a starting outside linebacker this year. You heard it here first. That’s the fact Jack!!

Comment by steve5bill 03.16.16 @ 11:56 am

Steve5. I hope you are right. We definitely need better outside linebacker play than we have had in a long time. I would also move Wirginis to the outside to see if he is an improvement.

Should we put JD on the mailing list?

Tossing, that was a nice segue into this from the Nightly Business Report story from last night on $ and the NCAA Tournament.

So Pitt really mainly cares if we just make the Dance and win one game at least. It’s good for about a quarter a million a year for the ACC for 6 straight years for each win. They in turn pay Pitt a portion that covers all expenses and the rest is divided among the schools.

So if Dixon just gets them there most of the time, he’s not going anywhere. Only the fans care about Final Fours. Of course they too would like to win a NC, but it the $ folks…

Ya think Pitt will take a chance on a new coach getting us to the NCAA’s like Dixon has?

The only way they get rid of Dixon is if he starts missing the Dance every year and the attendance falls off at the Pete.

Comment by Jackagain 03.16.16 @ 1:46 pm

Jackagain – yeah – kind of my point. It’s a business … at least it was under SP. Barnes and Gallagher appear to want to take the next step so I do think Jaime will have to prove himself but I also think he’s going to get some support he hasn’t had previously and Barnes started too late for it happen this year.

Just my opinion.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 03.16.16 @ 2:08 pm

I read last year about the ACC NCAA BB $$$ so obviously we all root for the ACC teams. I have to be vigilant to not have it influence my brackets. Of course I have several bracket entries including one for Pitt to the Final Four after beating WVU. H2P

Comment by Frank MD 03.16.16 @ 2:15 pm

Jamie will not have to worry about getting any more contracts from Pitt if the play of the last couple of years continues. I think Barnes will be able to find a replacement coach at half price and get Pitt to perform at the same level(and maybe better) as JD has lately,

Comment by Jrnpitt 03.16.16 @ 2:23 pm

Ok I’ve had a chance to dissect Wisconsin and have to admit Pitt really matches up well. The 4-1 ( or 4 out)offense that Wisky runs is a favorite of many girls basketball teams. It is not easy to defend but requires Wisc to hit lots of jump shots. Like Pitt, Wisky goes thru many shooting slumps. In addition, the 4 out swing offense is incredibalky easy to rebound out of.

If I were a betting man Friday, I would take Pott with confidence even if Jamie has a bad day at the office!

Pitt 72 – Wisconsin 60

H2P

Comment by Dan 72 03.16.16 @ 4:56 pm

If Pitt shows up Wisconsin should have a rough game. That’s still true for 90% of the teams in the country, if not more. But can JD get his guys to show up…

Comment by Deepelemblues 03.16.16 @ 5:22 pm

Pott = Pitt although if we play badly I may want the former

Comment by Dan 72 03.16.16 @ 5:33 pm

Anyone going to Friday’s game in STL, and if so any pregame festivities planned?

Comment by Midwest Panther 03.16.16 @ 5:49 pm

UCF QB transferring to PITT

“Bo Schneider ?@bo_schneider
Thank you to my coaches, teammates and Knight Nation for my time at UCF. I am transferring to Pittsburgh this summer to play football. #H2P”

Comment by Pittastic 03.16.16 @ 5:55 pm

Well, if that’s true I guess the obvious question goes to the Texas contingent, what’s the scoop??

Comment by JoeKnew 03.16.16 @ 7:41 pm

Did anyone happen to see the Duquesne / Omaha score in the CBI? 120-112. No OT. Omaha scored 80 in the 2nd half in a losing effort.

Comment by panther94 03.16.16 @ 8:29 pm

JoeKnew – My take is he is no good. If he was he wouldnt be afraid of winning a job. High school was Private Boys Jesuit School. Weak offers as well out of High School.

Comment by Upittbaseball 03.16.16 @ 8:29 pm

Anyone watching Michigan tonight … They are running
Wisconsins 4 out swing offense.

Comment by Dan 72 03.16.16 @ 8:32 pm

Pitt was LUCKY to draw Syracuse a third time.

Looking ahead to Friday, they probably couldn’t have done any better than Wisconsin.

The two VARIABLES…

Players need to shoot “lights out” or something very close… and their Coach needs to keep his COOL and avoid any semblance of a late Game MELTDOWN.

Those two in combination should prove enough to arrange a second date to the Dance on Sunday.

Comment by PittofDreams 03.16.16 @ 8:48 pm

You can’t have too many QB’s competing for the job next year.
Schneider must be decent since he started a few and played a few more at UCF which is decent program. MacVittie may not be ready and the other two are questionable.

Comment by gc 03.16.16 @ 9:01 pm

from what I read, Schneider is staring the fall camp was a walk-on with the intent of getting a schollie next year. I assume this was promised but if not, he’s taking quite a chance.

Comment by wbb 03.17.16 @ 6:03 am

from Pgh Sports Now:

“The style of Pitt’s offense fits me better”, said Schneider. “Pitt runs a Pro Style offense and with Coach Frost, Central Florida is moving to a spread offense. ”

The freshman quarterback told me that once he realized he wasn’t a fit with Central Florida, he contacted Pitt and offensive coordinator Matt Canada.

“I knew Coach Canada because he recruited me while he was at NC State. Coach Canada is a great guy and a smart guy. I like him because he tells it how it is. I like that from a coach”, said Schneider.
————————

BTW, he has never been to Pittsburgh

Comment by wbb 03.17.16 @ 6:33 am

If Upitt says Schneider is “no good” that probably means he will be Pitt’s next HOF player.

Comment by Grizzly1 03.17.16 @ 7:13 am

I don’t want Cam starting this game. Like him coming off of the bench. Would like to see Jones start and hope that he is encouraged to attack the rim.

For me, the game comes down to two things Artis and Dixon’s coaching decisions:

Need Artis to get off to a good start, stay engaged, and not settle for jumpers. He is effective slicing to the rim.

Dixon has to make good decisions on personnel and in-game adjustments, particularly if the game is tight in the second half, which I expect it will be. Time for Dixon to prove his in-game coaching skills are worthy of his salary.

Comment by Carmen 03.17.16 @ 7:22 am

All I know is that Guys named “Bo” usually end up starting at some point.

Comment by PittofDreams 03.17.16 @ 7:33 am

UPITT – His offer sheet wasn’t great but it certainly wasn’t all that weak… Colorado State, Oregon State, S. Miss, Tulsa, and … Houston who have had some killer QBs lately. He was a three star QB just like all the other three star QBs we seem to recruit. His offers may look ‘weak’ but they are western schools so we aren’t all that familiar with them.

link to n.rivals.com

Here are his HS stats and some videos – 11 tds to 1 INT and a 61% completion rate isn’t shabby. He left school because of the change in offensive systems and Canada had recruited him so he isn’t someone who just stumbled into the Southside practice facility.

link to maxpreps.com

Look at the Top 20 QBs in Passing Efficiency for 2015 – note the size of the schools for the majority of them.

I think this is the type of QB, at 6’4″/233 who may just blow up in college.

Of course those 7 INTs vs 2 TDs at UCF isn’t that great…

BTW – opened my mail the other day – thanks.

Comment by Reed 03.17.16 @ 7:51 am

Carmen, JD was on The Fan the other day and from his interview, I would fully expect Jones to start … mainly due that he thinks Jones is the far better defender.

As we all should know by now … that while Cam is improving in all phases, he really shouldn’t be getting a lot of PT when he is not shooting well which sadly happens more often than not. But having said that .. the fact that Wisc defense sags and welcomes outside shooting, this may be a game where Cam can really contribute.

Comment by wbb 03.17.16 @ 7:58 am

My thing is, with the QB transfer, and certainly because I have bought in totally to Narduzzi….

is if they want him……then great.

Maybe he plays, maybe he helps push someone else, maybe he’s a back up,

but if they want him, sounds good to me.

Comment by Dan 03.17.16 @ 10:23 am

gcb I heard in Annapolis that we’d lose a QB before fall camp.

That is probably Bertke although he is still on the roster. I’ll take that swap anyday.

Comment by Reed 03.17.16 @ 11:13 am

Schneider may be at the fall camp but he’s going to have to sit out the 2016 season. So who knows who will finally be anointed the primary backup for Peterman.
