Pitt’s James Conner Enjoys One of Best Rushing Years in ACC History Pitt sophomore RB James Conner had quite a “run” as the Panthers starting running back in 2014. Including the 2013 Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl, over his last 14 games, the Erie, Pa., native ran for 2,070 yards in 335 carries (6.2 avg.) and 28 TDs,
averaging 147.9 yards per game. He ended 2014 ranked sixth nationally in rushing yards per game (135.8) and seventh in total rushing yards (1,765), recording the third-best single season
rushing total in ACC history. His 26 rushing touchdowns this year shattered the ACC single-season record by five scores

Comment by wbb 04.21.15 @ 11:26 am

On the other hand, Pitt has only 3 defensive players in total listed as top returnees (render, Mosley-Smith and Pitts) .. while Louisville has 3 listed just at LB.

Pitt’s Lafayette Pitts Lead All

Pitt senior CB Lafayette Pitts leads all returning ACC players in numbers of career starts. Pitts has started 38 games in his career for the Panthers, one more than
Florida State senior linebacker Terrance Smith, who hasmade 37 starts.

PSU and Missouri Spring game replay on now. Really need an ACC Network.

Comment by gc 04.21.15 @ 12:44 pm

Will the hegemony of Duke and NC ever be broken? When the Game of Thrones in the ACC ends, the conference will become equals to the SEC. Those two schools and that southern old boys network is holding all other members back and as a result the entire conference suffers. The Northern schools and Miami need to pick up their game.

Comment by TX Panther 04.21.15 @ 5:40 pm

I learned a word today, thanks!

Comment by wbb 04.21.15 @ 5:45 pm

Watched the LSU spring game for a few minutes last nite.

Place was mostly empty. Camera crew was trying to hide that fact. All low angle stuff with no wide pans to show all the empties.

Comment by Emel 04.21.15 @ 6:04 pm

~ TX

I’m only interested in Pitt picking up their game.

Pitt & Syracuse are never real good at the same time.

So they have to remain down.

Comment by Emel 04.21.15 @ 6:09 pm

Talking football of course….(for the troll patrol)

Comment by Emel 04.21.15 @ 6:10 pm

Has Hendrix announced his transfer decision yet?

Comment by Dr. Tom 04.21.15 @ 10:14 pm

Also the rise of Miami in the 80’s took place exactly at the same time as the demise of Pitt.

So f*ck them too. They sort of took our rightful place (historical wise) among the nations elite football schools.

If Bernie Kozar of Youngstown, comes to Pitt instead of going to Miami…well….hate to think about.

But that might have been the start of a great line of QB’s at Pitt. Marino, Kozar, …..

Comment by Emel 04.22.15 @ 12:07 am

Howard Schnellenberger was the HC at Miami in the early 80s and really elevated the program. Yes, he recruited Bernie from Boardman (OH) … but he made a previous big QB score as an assistant for the Bear at Alabama … he recruited Joe Namath from Beaver Falls.

Comment by wbb 04.22.15 @ 6:08 am

Dr. Tom – Hendrix has a visit to NIU this Friday after which he supposedly will make a decision between Pitt, NIU and Iowa State.

Comment by dioninphoenix 04.22.15 @ 7:23 am

You have to think we have a serious shot at Hendrix given the competition. Just hope he’s not a country boy.

Comment by Atlanta Panther 04.22.15 @ 7:35 am

He is from Illinois. FWIW, we just lost out on a BB transfer (6’10 Mike Thorne) also from Illinois who chose Illinois … so there’s that!

Comment by wbb 04.22.15 @ 7:43 am

The Hendrix situation is very strange. Could go anywhere but is selecting from Pitt, NIU and Iowa St?

Regarding Miami, after Schnellenberger who turned them around they got Jimmy Johnson, turned their back on academics and recruited great athletes from the Miami Area.

The amazing thing was that Florida supplies enough players for championships at Miami, Florida State and Florida. It also exports many great players.

Comment by gc 04.22.15 @ 7:53 am

Emel – If LSU had a baseball game that is where they were. They get 15k a game.

Comment by Upittbaseball 04.22.15 @ 8:16 am

@Reed, fantastic job reporting on the spring game. Great info. Sounds like you guys had a great time and enjoyed the day.

I did better than I thought helping put up a balcony with my Uncle in Cape May. I’d love to meet some Blatherites in the fall.

Comment by Dan 04.22.15 @ 8:42 am

Agreed. We probably don’t thank you enough. Great coverage and great stories. Thank you! H2P

Comment by pittbluegold 04.22.15 @ 11:50 am

Obviously spring practices and the spring game were very positive. If nothing else Narduzzi is keeping his momentum up and players are buying in.

Hopefully, recruiting has some victories, our men get in fantastic shape over the summer, the freshmen are better than expected in fall camp and we get a full house for Youngstown St.

If the major unknown is answered and Narduzzi turns out to be a superstar game day coach, Pitt will rise from the mediocre to the sublime.

What will the blathering have to complain about?

Comment by gc 04.22.15 @ 11:57 am

Pitt was 4th in the ACC in Spring Game attendance.

Trailing ONLY football maniac schools, Clemson & FSU.

And a team that has had much more recent success than Pitt and has a very dynamic mktg. program(they cheat alot), L-Ville.

So that is not bad considering all the turmoil and frustration that has surrounded Pitt football….for say….32 years.

Comment by Emel 04.22.15 @ 12:14 pm

Much thanks for all of the info about the game.

Comment by PittFan28 04.22.15 @ 12:15 pm

~ upitt

Nope, no baseball game in Baton Rouge. LSU was on the road.

Comment by Emel 04.22.15 @ 12:20 pm

Yea Emel, but Petrino was giving free motorcycle rides to all young girls at half time

Comment by wbb 04.22.15 @ 12:20 pm

@Emel, absolutely!!

Saw some people if not comparing, mentioning in the same breath Ohio State had 90K and someone
else had 60K.

There is no point to that. It’s not even apples to oranges, it’s apples to a china closet.

The thing to compare or gauge is how was this Pitt spring to past spring games??

From everything I’ve heard, the buzz was fantastic, a great venue, a great weather day and really fun for everyone.

Maybe someday we’ll get 10K at Heinz Field.

Comparing it to OSU getting 90K, you might as well be bangin’ your head against a brick wall.

Even if we went undefeated and won a couple national championships, we ain’t gettin’ 50K to a spring game. We don’t have the numbers in the fan base.

So, for some to keep comparing that, they will continually end up disappointed.

Comment by Dan 04.22.15 @ 12:21 pm

Pitt if in the PAC 12, would have been 3rd in attendance.

Trailing only USC & Oregon State.

Our fan base is more similar to a USC or UCLA than the zombies at Pedo State or Ohio Fake, or the yahoos in the SEC.

Comment by Emel 04.22.15 @ 12:24 pm

~ wbb…..I heard that ! lol

Comment by Emel 04.22.15 @ 12:26 pm

right Dan-o

We just have the unfortunate circumstances of being between two of the most moronic, overindulged, willing to look past anything, zombified college fan herds in America.

So we have to hear all about their neuroses on an almost daily basis.

Comment by Emel 04.22.15 @ 12:30 pm

@Emel – I’m not sure I completely get your reference. Could you be more specific and identify the cities/states? I can think of schools in State College, Columbus, Morgantown, Ann Arbor, South Bend, etc that would fit your description. Of course you will notice that none of those places has anything resembling a pro franchise. (and before someone brings up the Blue Jackets or Crew, remember a certain HC stated last year that there are no pro teams in Columbus)

Comment by CalvinHobbes 04.22.15 @ 1:15 pm

I thought it was obvious….Pedo State & Ohio Fake.

The Hoopie’s fans are more psychotic than neurotic.

Hope that clears things up !

Comment by Emel 04.22.15 @ 1:37 pm

Just kidding, I knew who you meant – – but that description could be used for a few programs.

Comment by CalvinHobbes 04.22.15 @ 2:04 pm

Notice since Miami got more selective academically, the football team is not as elite.

It is harder to get into despite the cost.

It reminds me of Pitt in the 60’s.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 04.22.15 @ 2:18 pm

The Hoopie’s predominent mental affliction is most definitely pyromania. There is not a couch that remains safe after a home victory!

Comment by Dr. Tom 04.22.15 @ 2:59 pm

@Dr Tom

Which is safer, a couch or a sheep?

H2P

Comment by pmdH2P 04.22.15 @ 3:02 pm

I pity the sheep.

Comment by TX Panther 04.22.15 @ 4:34 pm

Attended the GA Tech spring game in the rain at Bobby Dodd stadium. Around 4,000 fans were in attendance for the first half then folks drifted away. Looks like Pitt and Tech had similar attendance. Tech never gets huge turnouts for its spring games. No big deal. Given that Tech has a hard time selling out Bobby Dodd during the regular season, I’m not surprised with their spring (non) game attendance.

Comment by MariettaMike 04.22.15 @ 4:49 pm

Pitt is not a state school in the middle of a cow pasture surrounded by brain dead zombies who have nothing better to do than attend a meaningless game and chant self righteous words all while drinking the Kool Aid which makes them feel better about their worthless POS lives.

Comment by TX Panther 04.22.15 @ 5:00 pm

The sad thing is WVU has a coaches show on TV right now in Pittsburgh, and we got nothing. Pitt and the ACC sucking wind when it comes to TV coverage and promotion. No wonder we are behind in recruiting, outside of the tri-state area kids no little about Pitt Athletics. Going to the ACC cost us New York and Philadelphia, Maryland’s defection has cost us Baltimore and DC. Hurts much more in Basketball than Football.

Comment by gc 04.22.15 @ 5:20 pm

Know not no

Comment by gc 04.22.15 @ 5:21 pm

I could use an ACC network right now as much as I could use a cold beer.

Comment by TX Panther 04.22.15 @ 5:25 pm

Our sports writers in Pittsburgh also don’t help the cause of promoting Pitt. They’d rather disparage the school and raise up the Pedos to the East and sheep rapers to the South than say anything good about the local team that bears the city’s name. They are garbage.

Comment by TX Panther 04.22.15 @ 5:30 pm

~ TX

I like your plain and simple statements.
You get right to the point.

Since the Post-Gazette & Trib are both struggling to stay above water, like most dinosaur newspapers, UPMC should just buy the rags. For they, like Pitt itself seem to be under constant attack from the Pedo’s who influence and seem to hold sway on both rags.

Comment by Emel 04.22.15 @ 6:16 pm

We like to keep things simple and to the point here in Texas; otherwise, we forget our last thought and get caught up in hypotheticals. UPittbaseball can attest. 🙂

It took Ben howland 1month for a 5 star recruit to commit..I miss Ben

Comment by Keith 04.22.15 @ 10:02 pm

Does anyone have any information on how the rumored meeting went this week between Jamie and Chancellor Gallagher?

I think Jamie will snag a serviceable graduate transfer to come off the bench for next season. I’m hoping for two – one big man and one shooting guard. The problem in the past is they (any transfer) never seem to adapt to our system of play. Two examples are Trey Zeigler and Jeter. The later still has a chance to fit in and contribute consistently. Jeter showed flashes of being a good player, but the performances were widely inconsistent.

@ JR – I didn’t think my comments yesterday morning were hateful towards Pitt BB nor Jamie – and same with this morning.

Concerned – yes. Hateful – no need. It’s college basketball and I want Pitt to be competitive and entertaining (winning is entertaining). We pay Jamie a nice wage to lead in both areas.

Like our FB team, if you win the fans will support and attend games – not always, but it is a great starting point. Marketing and recruiting help to fill seats as well after the winning takes hold.

Let’s get the buzz back for our BB team. I believe it has to start with the leader – Jamie Dixon. Show us what the money can do…

HTP!

Comment by Erie Express 04.23.15 @ 4:32 am

Oh, and I have a suggestion – why not become an Addidias school and go hard after Maverick Rowan.

Just saying – seems legal and within the rules. I’m sure there are contracts in place with our current shoe supplier/sponsor – but I’m sure it has an end date that if communicated & negotiated well, could help in our recruiting efforts for Maverick.

Comment by Erie Express 04.23.15 @ 4:37 am

There is no guarantee that Rowan will come here if we do switch, especially now that he lives in FL.

One of the 2016 recruits supposedly considering Pitt is 4-star 6’3 PG Temple Gibbs, younger brother of Ashton. There has been little mention here of him and don’t know how serious he is about Pitt or anyone else.

I do know that why he is not the alleged talent Heron is, he would be a very welcome addition here … to succeed JR and team with Damon Wilson in the backcourt.

As far as transfers … Pitt has been going after an experienced shooting guard, and has hosted a in the past week. In the past, I would be confident that JD would snag one of these, but now I just don’t know.

Comment by wbb 04.23.15 @ 5:56 am

@gc – There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don’t know we don’t know.

All you need to know about Pittsburgh sports writing is on the home page of the PG’s website. When you mouseover sports, local sports are in this order: Steelers, Pens, Pirates, High School, then colleges. High School before college. That sums it up perfectly.

The sports writers are lazy and either have no ambition to move to a better paper or lack the talent to do so. Therefore they know they will retire in the exact same place they are in now regardless of effort. So why try? Keep the hoopies happy so you’ll sell a few papers in WVa. Kowtow to the mid-state zombies who will buy your crap no matter what.

In all honesty, Pitt hasn’t given them much to be positive about in the last 30 years in any sport.

I have no interest in their drivel.

Comment by Yeti 04.23.15 @ 7:46 am

Reed, a certain Secretary of Defense used that line, when a campaign was going very badly, I hope you weren’t making an analogy to our basketball program.

Comment by gc 04.23.15 @ 8:06 am

it’s the problem of playing in a professional city. Boston College faces it, Temple faces it, St John’s faces it, Maryland faces it … and on and on.

Further, all of the Pgh professional teams have been more successful than Pitt over the past few decades. The only beef we Pitt fans have is why PSU appears to get referential treatment many times in both papers.
