And so it seems the era of Chryst ends with the balance and even keel he preached. A 19-19 record after three years. Perfect balance.

I can’t be particularly angry at Chryst for choosing to go back to his alma mater. His state. Where all his ties are. I can be pissed at everything else around it, but not the decision.

It’s just hard to believe that with such “meh” results, Pitt is staring at yet another coaching search. I had hoped that if the program had to start looking this soon it would be because of success. Not Wisconsin giving Pitt a run for its dysfunction.

Technically it is not official. Yet, it seems to be all but. Paul Chryst will leave Pitt and return to Wisconsin.

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez wasted little time in identifying, pursuing and securing a a head coach to replace for Gary Andersen.

According to a source close to the UW program, former UW assistant Paul Chryst is poised to return to his alma mater.

Normally, a .500 coach with equally mediocre recruiting leaving would not be met with a sense of frustration. Given Pitt’s recent insanity with coaching changes, it feels too soon.

Here’s what makes this coaching change and subsequent search so unnerving for me. I mean, aside from the whole involvement of AD Steve Pedersen. The team is limited in the candidates.

Pitt really can’t go out and hire a guy who is a big spread proponent. The personnel just isn’t there, and I don’t think the program can take another lurch and subsequent pains of putting square pegs in round holes.

As an aside, the best quote from the story.

“I thought this would be the scenario from Day 1,” the source told the Journal Sentinel. “He will put together a good staff.

[Emphasis added for LOLs]

I still don’t get the negativity by some folks for Chryst here… without question.

1. the program turned out to be much worse off than anyone thought as we watched what unfolded in his first year.

2. The program in every aspect is much better off from his time here, period.

No matter what happens he did us well while he was here and we should acknowledge that and wish him the best back home where he came from.

and that is why if we do hire someone we need someone with that local connection as well.

Just about every alternative mentioned here will be people that will be gone once they string together a few 9-3 seasons and get to a decent bowl… they will be the buzz of the off season and gone to their ‘dream job’.

Comment by goalie44 12.12.14 @ 10:09 pm

if gallagher is supposed to be in charge of the next coach search, why is sp being quoted that he hope he stays? shouldn’t these two be on the same page?

Comment by goalie44 12.12.14 @ 10:17 pm

Pittscript, I have no animosity towards Paul Chryst. He apparently has chosen to go back to Wisconsin. I care about the Pitt coach and Pitt football program. So going forward, what he what people say about him is of no particular interest to me. What I do care about is who leads the Pitt program going forward. Let’s get someone in:

1. Who can coach
2. Who can recruit
3. Who wants to be here!

Comment by Justinian 12.12.14 @ 10:22 pm

Just to clarify I do not have faith in AD or his department… just and amazing statement to make if that is what he is truly doing.

I am a huge Nordenberg fan for a lot of reasons but he did screw us by making sure SP gets a big payday no matter what… hey, its not his money, just the poor students paying rising tuition…

Comment by Pittscript 12.12.14 @ 10:25 pm

I agree Justinian with your criteria and you are always one of the most insightful people writing here…

I was referring to others.

Comment by Pittscript 12.12.14 @ 10:26 pm

There is only one person in world that thinks that Paul Chryst may stay at Pitt and it is Steve P.

His reasoning?

Paul hasn’t told him he’s leaving yet…………………

The above is not a punchline to a bad joke. 3/4’s of the posters on the site are more in tuned with what is going on with our than Smug Pederson is

Good riddance you sweatshirt wearing, Potato looking, cheese loving, oaf speaking, neat thinking, potato looking (twice for emphasis) midwestern puke….its a Friday I am tired, I can’t think of all the other perjorative stupid nicknames people have made up for this coach that did nothing but try and do the right thing for Pitt and brought it back from the depths of dysfunctionality to stability/mediocrity. We will never know if you were poised to take us now from mediocrity to the top 25, but I am guessing we will think the answer was yes when Wisconsin ends the year next year with a B12 championship.

i thought wisconsin was in the big 10??

Comment by goalie44 12.12.14 @ 10:38 pm

Oh and he was 6-6, 6-6 and 6-6 here with a all american, player of the year in ACC and All ACC WR. Oh and that was with 1 win against a D2 school. One against FIU essentially a D2 school, Akron – Oh sorry we lost to them and another no name school. He beat BC, VT and Miami. There you have it.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.12.14 @ 10:44 pm

haha cause he’s need a miracle to win the big 12!! lol

Comment by goalie44 12.12.14 @ 10:44 pm

Tony in Harrisburg, All that talk about wanting him to stay is really about the buy-out of Chryst’s contract. The Pitt administration has to wait until he is officially named the new coach at Wisconsin. If they do anything before then, Chryst is off the hook. We’re probably talking about 2 or 3 million.

Comment by Justinian 12.12.14 @ 10:44 pm

Its easy….if he takes House with him, then no way will he win. And, i will think better of all this all going down. If he dumps House….then maybe he is not as dumb as some paint him here aftersll.

Comment by DD 12.12.14 @ 10:45 pm

Goalie… Like it. Funny.

But truthfully, you don’t want to know where this Program is heading if Chryst does in fact pack his bags and leave.

Not Good.

Comment by PittofDreams 12.12.14 @ 10:46 pm

Guys that wanted Chryst gone are still the most pissed off, could be a condition. LOL

Comment by gc 12.12.14 @ 10:46 pm

No we are talking less than 1.3M at this point. That talk is Pederson having zero sense. Big difference. Chryst had 2 years left. It was 6M. More than halfway through. 2M and nego it and we are lucky to get 1.5M.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.12.14 @ 10:47 pm

Come on UPitt, they also beat the mighty Orangemen of Syracuse.

Comment by Nick 12.12.14 @ 10:47 pm

thanks justinian, i was wondering about that as well.

Comment by goalie44 12.12.14 @ 10:49 pm

Rivals shows no change in Pitt’s class. Pitt will never be Harvard but it is on course to compete with the big boys academically among the state schools, Michigan, Cal, UCLA etc. We need a football coach whose kids mostly stay out of trouble, go to class and perform academically, display good character and win, including some games they aren’t supposed to. We have him! If you don’t believe the win part just watch next year if Chryst stays, 8 and 4 at the worst. If he doesn’t stay we still need a coach who meets the above requirements and I agree with those of you who say the administration needs to move quickly and loosen the purse strings a bit if necessary. Just don’t screw it up with a hothead Pelini, Sal S. or some hotshot spread carpetbagger guy. Oh and by the way USAA ranks Pittsburgh as a top city for veterans starting their post military lives. USAA lauds the advantages the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon provide to the city for vets. H2P!

Comment by OPFIM 12.12.14 @ 10:49 pm

goalie44 and others,
Could it be that SP wants HCPC to stay because his job may depend on it? That’s what it seems to me.

Comment by panther94 12.12.14 @ 10:50 pm

Already, some KEY BOOSTERS are lining up in favor of Chryst.

But it just might take the STUDENT BODY to do something in order to convince Chryst he has a home in Oakland.

Where’s the Oakland ZOO when you need them?

Comment by PittofDreams 12.12.14 @ 10:50 pm

Opfim – with all due respect why did we only win 6 games this year? The schedule
Next year is supposed to be better. I only say this because it is always next year. We
Live on next season, next year. The AD and Chancellor
Arent even on same page now.

i really don’t think is/was the answer to pitt returning to 9-10 wins a year. that’s just from i’ve seen over the past three years. is that all his fault?? no prob not. i believe he, among the other coaches were hamstrung by the asshole sp.

Comment by pd 12.12.14 @ 10:58 pm

I did something I’ve never done, I called the Chancellor’s office to express my concern with Stevie!! Man it feels good, I highly encourage it!

Comment by Sweet Caroline 12.12.14 @ 10:58 pm

The main reason why Stevie should be fired, he started this whole mess!! Whether you think Wanny should’ve been let go or not, he was and it started everything! And the way he was let go was so embarrassing. Biggest reason number two why AD should be fired, because on more than one occasion, hell probably dozens and dozens of occasions, a Pitt job popped up and the potential candidate didn’t apply because of our AD! There you go! He is the biggest cancer in College Sports!

Comment by Sweet Caroline 12.12.14 @ 11:02 pm

No one can possibly know if the Chancellor and AD are on the same page right now as there is nothing but silence from the Chancellor and rumors about him pushing Smiley aside.

Pitt can be trying to keep PC and be looking for a new coach at the same time you know, it isn’t impossible to do both those things at once.

Comment by deepelemblues 12.12.14 @ 11:06 pm

Smiley should say nothing.

But all we want for Christmas is our two front teeth or maybe …..

Comment by Frank MD 12.12.14 @ 11:17 pm

Upittbaseball, Thanks for your response. My reasoning is based on the fact that when a coach has to totally rebuild a program the 4th year is the year he has his recruits in place and has them developed and committed to his system. This team has learned from its juvenile mistakes. As James Connor said after he went into cruse control when about to cross the goal line and had the ball knocked out of his hand “Lesson learned.” If Chryst stays and I’m wrong you are welcome to call me “Liar, liar, pants on fire.” HTP!

Comment by OPFIM 12.12.14 @ 11:20 pm

Goalie… Don’t underrate how DEPLETED this Team was when Chryst took over.

Three… count it… THREE Pitt Players from the last few years in the NFL. Only one, Tom Savage… did Chryst recruit.

Fast forward to today… BOYD, CONNER, CLEMMINGS all GUARANTEED High Draft Picks.

And Chryst has yet to have a Quarterback he recruited under Center.

You and ANYONE else UNDERVALUING Chryst are failing to see the REALITY of what he is in the process of building here… PIECE by PIECE.

Believe me, Barry Alvarez SEES IT!

Comment by PittofDreams 12.12.14 @ 11:28 pm

Yes, Chryst did NOT recruit Clemmings. But he and Hueber were SMART enough to ask him to switch over to Offense.

Comment by PittofDreams 12.12.14 @ 11:32 pm

sorry pod, gonna have to agree to disagree. 19-19 with terrible losses mostly due to poor coaching and or lack of motivation does not have me shedding tears if he leaves.

defense?? that’s not the head coach’s responsibility is it??

Comment by goalie44 12.12.14 @ 11:51 pm

I close for the night with just another example of what a brainless program killer Cyanide Steve is…

Pitt has received several inquiries from prospective coaches about a possible opening, but Pederson said he has not returned those calls.

“I haven’t talked to anybody,” he said. “We have a football coach right now. We have a good football coach, and that’s my concern, focusing on him right now.”

Yeah Stevie boy….don’t even pick up you phone and return their calls.

POP – Only way Connor smells the draft is on defense. I saw LB.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.13.14 @ 12:16 am

Upitt… I was the first to say Conner was going to make everyone FORGET ABOUT Rushel Shell… and I did this while he was still in High School and all the So-Called “Experts” were saying he was a D-End.

OK, that said… until this Year… I also thought that Conner… while BEST at Runningback in College… likely would be headed to DEFENSE at the next Level.

But seeing how Conner transformed himself into something LEANER and FASTER, I would NEVER sell this Kid short on whatever he wants to do.

If he wants to be an NFL Back… there’s no way anyone can say “He can’t do it.”

You’d be FOOLISH to do so.

Comment by PittofDreams 12.13.14 @ 12:34 am

When the ACC Coaches vote you “Player of the Year” and you’re a Runningback… guess what… you are a RUN-NING-BACK… and far from AVERAGE!

Comment by PittofDreams 12.13.14 @ 12:39 am

POD – The Scouts and GM ‘s will I’m afraid. I don’t see the speed needed. Just my 2 cents. He’ll the studs don’t even go high anymore. 5th to 7th round if lucky

Big difference between the. ACC and NFL.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.13.14 @ 12:41 am

Comment by pd 12.13.14 @ 12:45 am

Conner is the same size as LeGarrette Blount and and as far as I can tell is just a little bit faster than Blount was at the same age, from watching highlights of him play at Oregon.

LeGarrette’s had a pretty good NFL career for a bruising-style RB. Conner can too.

Comment by deepelemblues 12.13.14 @ 12:50 am

NFL draft scout has him rated the second RB behind Derrick Henry of Bama.

Comment by pd 12.13.14 @ 12:52 am

coaching carousel. SOP. I don’t really care about all of this discussion. Steve Pederson – please let us uneducated lemmings with wallets know when we should show up and support your embarrassing mediocre product. Apparently knowing that you thing Pitt athletics is “in a good place” should be “good enough” for us.

Comment by PITT it IS 12.13.14 @ 8:32 am

PoD, I also complimented Chryst in his recruiting of Conner while also predicting that Conner would be an impact player. This while he was still finishing his HS finals. But to identify HCPC’s recruiting successes as a forte of his is ludicrous.

Pitt has owned Aliquippa historically, Devon Henry, swing and a miss! Foster? Strike two. And where is that four star QB recruit that an offensive guru like Chryst should have brought in three years ago as a cornerstone to building a program? Strike three. His recruiting techniques have proven to be a weakness not a strength.

The other huge factor that is missing with Chryst is the entertainment factor. Where is the showmanship? Fraud Graham has it! He can shovel the BS to excess, but he realizes that it is important to create excitement and produce a buzz, sincere or fabricated, because after all, college football is nothing more than another form of “entertainment”. All Chryst has is his “aw shucks” Midwestern sincerity going for him.

Chryst doesn’t have that knack to be the team’s Master of Ceramony, he is a “neat” guy who has helped stabilize a program that was severely listing and most people “appreciate” that. But without regard to whether Chryst stays or goes, he has already made enough errors while learning on the job to negate the potential of him ever being included in the ranks of the past elite coaches at Pitt.

So please put down the torch you seem to be carrying for the guy, he is not and never will be the second coming of Jock.

Comment by Dr. Tom 12.13.14 @ 9:28 am

Conner is an upright runner…he will have a short NFL career at RB and every NFL scout knows this.
