So Much For RB Depth

At least for the rest of spring practices.

It’s been quite a few months in the offline world. Not necessarily in a good way. That’s really all I want to say about the latest gap in posting.

When last I posted on football it was about the running back position. About how there was depth and lots of good feelings at the spot. Naturally that couldn’t last.

Pitt running backs James Conner and Isaac Bennett will miss the final five practices of the spring session because of injuries suffered Friday, the university announced via social media.

Conner, a rising sophomore, sprained his left knee, while Bennett, a senior, sprained his left shoulder, the team posted on Twitter.

The injuries are not expected to prevent them from being ready for offseason conditioning when it begins in May, the team said.

Bennett and Conner combined for 1,596 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns last season.

Conner left the indoor practice facility on a golf cart with his knee wrapped in ice. He had an MRI, which revealed no structural damage.

Not long after Conner was injured, Bennett injured his shoulder. He watched the remainder of practice with his arm in a sling.

Yes, it could have been worse. Both with sprains. Not tears or breaks or anything else.

Still, for the rest of the spring it will be Rachid Ibrahim and WR Ronald Jones playing the role of emergency back-up running back.

Conner is staying positive and had a chance to meet Dan Marino at a function this past week.

Conner said his “heart dropped” when he saw Marino enter the banquet hall.

“It was a blessing to meet Mr. Marino. He gives you those words of wisdom, and you just take everything in,” he said.

“It was a life-changing experience. I’m trying to follow in his footsteps and be a Pitt great.”

Conner called his injury Friday during spring practice “a freak accident.”

“I was just going out of bounds and stepped on it the wrong way,” he said. “Just a couple weeks. It will be good.”

In other things. Somewhere in this is a tacit acknowledgment that Chad Voytik will be running.

In the Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl, Voytik had two rushes for 24 yards and a touchdown.

There is some danger there. Pitt has only two quarterbacks on the roster this spring. While the Panthers have shown a handful of designed quarterback runs in practice, the quarterbacks’ red jerseys keep them off-limits from contact, and Chryst acknowledged it’s important to be careful at a thin position.

“Our job is to make sure we are doing everything we can to use our players’ strengths and help build up their weaknesses,” he said. “At all positions where you don’t have a lot of depth, you have to be smart. There is a balance in everything you do.”

Just not so much for the rest of spring practices.

Dorian Johnson feels like he is getting stronger and smarter.

The battles to be the other starting wide receiver and cornerback continue. I’d say the WR spot has more urgency for the players competing. Simply because there will be additional competition with the incoming freshmen in August.

The secondary is not going to have major challenges coming in this year, so that give the coaches more time to evaluate the players that are competing now and not have to consider additional players who may prove themselves in the fall.

FYI – Mueller / Starkey broadcasting live from Pitt practice facility this afternoon from 2 to 6 on The Fan. Not sure how informative it will be but has to be better than their normal show.

Conner and Bennett are now the 2 most experienced RBs so it doesn’t disturb me at all that they are sitting, just wish there was a little more depth right now, like there will be this fall.

With our own little world here on Pitt Blather, I often like to read outsider viewpoints. Cardiac Hill (link on right) has a column from Va Tech, which is providing runonw of all of its 2014 opponents.

Much of it is not very flattering, probably in large part due to the way our OL was manhandled last year at their place.

Anyway, here is an excerpt, talking about Pitt’s easy early schedule:

I can’t wait to hear the talking heads tout “undefeated” Pitt when they’re 6-0 in mid-October. I swear, though, if they don’t win at least 8 games, I say we vote them out of the ACC, effective immediately. Not kidding. Trade them for ODU. Trade them for Oscar Smith High School. One of the schools on Esquire Network’s “Friday Night Tykes.” Anybody.

The write-up is fascinating in that it shows how Pitt is viewed by others … however, it may not be real valid since Pitt’s best player is not even listed.

Comment by wbb 04.08.14 @ 7:52 am

As I expressed before, my concern is are they injury prone? Even though he is a senior, Bennett needs reps if he is to be the third down guy. timing on swing passes with Voytik is essential.

Last year it was Conners shoulder, now a knee. He needs reps at both positions he plays. Maybe not a major setback, but a setback none the less.

Nice article about DJ. Again, hope he stays healthy this year. Funny at 290 he is a light weight, but obviously has the frame and strength.

Should also be fast and agile enough to be a great pulling guard if they want to add that to their repertoire.

The reports on the young receivers are encouraging and it looks like we have some quality depth with Challinsworth sounding like a possession guy and Weah a burner. Wuestner has some talent as well. These guys should be pushing Jones and Garner and if Adonis (love the name) is the real deal, opposing backfields are going to be in trouble.

Our young D-backs got a lot of experience last year. With the new coach and a more aggressive style, they should be fun to watch. Hopefully they are getting bigger and stronger as well, especially the safeties. Nice combination of experience and youth.

Comment by gc 04.08.14 @ 8:03 am

wbb, at least we are in their heads. I don’t hear us talking about them, or anyone for that matter.

If Bisno gets healthy or Jaryd Jones can play, we won’t get manhandled any more. If not, they will have to move DJ back to tackle and that could be trouble, unless one of the incoming freshmen is ready.

Comment by gc 04.08.14 @ 8:09 am

Interesting that the Hokie faithful are talking crap on Pitt considering how little success they’ve had against us over the years.

Comment by longsufferingpittfan 04.08.14 @ 8:50 am

They are right about one thing, our schedule does suck.

Comment by gc 04.08.14 @ 8:57 am

longsuffering.. there is some truth to what you say. Two years ago, we dominated them probably more than they dominated us this past year.

They also didn’t account for the fact of just how much instability the program has gone thru since 2010. For example, they question how we could be so thin at QB … (actually, a good question.)

But the only way to counteract this is to play well on the field …. I really think Pitt is due for an improvement this year (as long as Voytik is not injured)

Comment by wbb 04.08.14 @ 9:03 am

off topic but … in the last 5 years, UConn is 16 and 2 in the NCAA tourney (Mens)

Comment by wbb 04.08.14 @ 9:34 am

wbb – I’ll agree at least on the offensive side of the ball.

One can look at the returning starting OL and be somewhat nervous due to their 2013 track record. It wasn’t a very good showing at all, but that is on the surface for now.

One thing about Paul Chryst is that he doesn’t hesitate to go with youth when he feels it is necessary. That was very evident last season. So, I think he’ll take the same stance with the younger OL guys who he has recruited. IMO we’ll see some more speed guys on the OL (DJ for one) who will be able to pull and get in front of Conner and Voytik when their numbers are called to rush the ball.

I’m looking forward to see how Voytik does. As you all know I have not been the biggest Voytik fan but I’ve always recognized that his ability to tuck and run is impressive and will be a weapon at QB that we haven’t seen since Pat Bostick…. or maybe Bill Stull who out gained Greg Cross when he ran the ball.

Anyway, I have a feeling the offense will improve from 2013 to 2014. I know PITT fans like what Savage did but I think a lot of that was a perception because he followed everyone’s least favorite QB in Sunseri. 59th in passing can be improved upon and certainly 102nd in rushing will be bettered, at least I think so. Savage was OK, certainly not irreplaceable.

One thing – let’s not confuse the issue with any QB controversy as I have done in the past. Last year I knew that the staff didn’t feel Voytik had a lock on the ’14 QB spot. This year is different given the fact that he had all the QB2 snaps last season and his good work in the bowl game.

New players, new starters, new schedule, new season – looking forward to it (even if I bagged on the season tickets this year).

Comment by Reed 04.08.14 @ 9:49 am

Reed, agree with all you said above … and I would expect the OL to be much better this year, and thankfully, they have some easy early games to work out the kinks.

On the defensive side, I think there are 2 critical areas ….. DE and MLB, and Pitt cannot absorbe injuries at these two poitions.

Despite the loss of Donald, there are 4 players with talent for the 2 middle DL slots, our OLBs and their replacements return, and have no doubt that the DB will be better this year.

BTW, Reed, you may want to check out the 3-game plan, which me and my buddies chose. I think it is a good option for us guys with long commutes.

Comment by wbb 04.08.14 @ 10:08 am

VT does not like because we beat them. VT comes to us this year so we can make them even madder. I agree with an earlier post that ACC should invite UCONN and work with ND to join in FB. Once ACC Channel is up and running money will help with this.

Comment by Frank 04.08.14 @ 10:12 am

Will Grimm and/or Bookser redshirt this year?

Comment by gc 04.08.14 @ 11:39 am

Also, can’t wait to see what Herndon does next fall.

Comment by gc 04.08.14 @ 11:40 am

wbb, let’s hope that Galambos is one of the guys that steps up this year. He could really make a difference. Soto looks ready, if Price can get and stay healthy, we might have a pass rush.

Comment by gc 04.08.14 @ 11:43 am

But I agree we are really thin at those positions.

Comment by gc 04.08.14 @ 11:44 am

gc, I would have to think that the plan would be to redshirt both young OL, being there is already sufficient depth. Now, eventually these two would work themselves into the starting lineup within the next couple of years … but I think if either of them play this year, the OL is still in trouble.

Herndon is natural frosh … as far as newcomers to the DL, my eyes are on redshirts, Moody and Jarrett, who is already getting some notice (and not only because he is 340 lbs)

Comment by wbb 04.08.14 @ 11:50 am

If any ACC people are reading this, I myself would welcome an ACC channel, and actually support it.

Would I watch every event, of course not. But, I know I would start following ACC baseball. I would also follow the softball. Before my Dad passed, we started watching the girls softball world series, back in 2005 or so. He used to be in fast pitch leagues back in the 40’s and 50’s.

Gotta say, after awhile, really enjoy it. The girls really show emotion and don’t care, slappin’ hands and screamin.

Runs are at a premium though, as the pitchers are so good.

Probably watch some soccer too. The other sports, eh??

I would watch though………as long as it didn’t interfere with Gilligans Island and Hogan’s Heroes!!

Comment by Dan 04.08.14 @ 12:29 pm

Va. Tech fans, surely they jest??

You do mean the team, that we beat 4 times in a row before last year??

They’re making jokes???

Comment by Dan 04.08.14 @ 12:32 pm

Pat Bostick a running threat?! That dude was a statue, no? Stull was alright but nothing special — its been a looooong time since Pitt had a running QB…Rutherford is the closest I can think of and he was a little better than average…Palko probably a tick down from him — both good athletes but doubt either one broke a 4.7 40. If Voytik can run that’s great, but he’s not very big so I would be careful with that…Anderson looks pretty quick but he’s even smaller. Unless Chryst wants to take the wrapping of Bertke (sp?) early, I’d try to keep both guys upright as much as possible and keep feeding Conner instead.

Comment by Matt N. 04.08.14 @ 1:03 pm

Palko was an effective runner. Rutherford definitely was early in career but seemed to put on a lot of weight in his jr and sr year (you may remember his long pass and catch as a frosh to score the only TD of the game vs PSU)

But I missed the part of Bostik being a running threat … no way! What Bostik had in his brief career (mainly as a freshman) was an ability to play well late in the game, although it seemed it took him a while to warm up. Pitt could have easily won 3 more games that year … Louisville, Rutgers and Navy, but fell just short.

Comment by wbb 04.08.14 @ 1:27 pm

they also fell short at MSU come to think of it, although I bellieve that was with Kevin Smith at QB

Comment by wbb 04.08.14 @ 1:29 pm

how reliable are pre-season polls?

Comment by wbb 04.08.14 @ 1:39 pm

As wbb mentioned, this a$$hole writing for “Gobbler Country” doesn’t even mention Tyler Boyd in the Pitt synopsis for 2014, so how much stock can we even place in this dip$hit’s opinion of the Panthers in the first place. Then he has the nerve to begin dissing on Pitt’s early season schedule. Last time I checked, VT has William & Mary, East Carolina and Western Michigan on their own early schedule slate for 2014 and last year they played the power houses of Western Carolina, Marshall and East Carolina AGAIN, so suck your own,,,prick and right back at you jagoff, regarding strenght of schedule. OK, I’ll give you that you got a trip to Columbus to get your a$$es kicked by Ohio State in September just like Alabama embarrassed you last year, BIG DEAL! At least OUR schedule is set up for success early on, you are right about that.

But then this Dick has the attitude that if Pitt isn’t 6-0 going into their nationally televised game against the Hokies, that they should be thrown out of the ACC. Give me a break already!?!? 6-0 would mean that we would have penciled in a win against the BC Eagles at their own place by then, while last season VT lost to BC themselves, BTW. Also, last season, we beat the eventual division champs which the Gobblers failed to do as well, losing to Duke too.

Trash talk is fine, IF you can back it up with the facts as well as some wins, but last time I checked, Pitt has kicked your butts 4 out of the last 5 times that we’ve played you and we’re going to do it again this season too to push our record to 7-0 at your expense $hit for brains!

I’m starting to hate these guys, which is a good thing.

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Dr. Tom 04.08.14 @ 1:42 pm

This might sound a bit strange as a question, however, when I think of last year I recall our punting situation as being less than reliable…MUCH LESS.

Does anybody have an idea as to how Winslow has been doing this spring?

Comment by isnore 04.08.14 @ 1:46 pm

@@@@@

Pitt program/ needs to learn how to win.
Don’t care that non-non schedule next
season is soft. Let’s win 10 games and go
to a major bowl. Winning breeds success
in all aspects of the program including
Recruiting. Also we haven’t had a dual
threat since Palko. Voytik’s ability
to scramble will keep opposing defenses
honest

Comment by JR 04.08.14 @ 2:18 pm

Anyone really what Voytik to run before the 8th or 9th game of the schedule with our Qb depth?

Comment by alcofan 04.08.14 @ 2:37 pm

Same old Blather.

Nice to see Ibrahim getting some reps. I hope he doesn’t sprain anything.

Comment by Atlanta Panther 04.08.14 @ 2:41 pm

@Dr Tom – – before you slam the VoTech guy too hard, you should stop and review the Gobblers’ 2014 schedule a little more closely. Yes, they are playing East Carolina again but VT only beat them by 5 points last year – – – unlike in 2008 when ECU beat VT by 5. Also in the 3 times they have played, VT has only beaten Western Michigan by a combined score of 124-0. Lastly, William and Mary might not be a powerhouse but at least they aren’t James Madison – – – who beat the Hokies in 2010. Looking at the entire Hokies schedule, it’s tough to say when they will start under-performing before putting their 37% bowl winning percentage to the test!

Comment by CalvinHobbes 04.08.14 @ 2:57 pm

Hopefully the guy was just making a funny comment.
To suggest that Pitt be replaced by ODU is quite funny, expecially since Pitt had beaten them 4 times in a row before last year.

Not to mention their basketball team. Maybe Tech should be replaced in the ACC by Gannon??

Comment by Dan 04.08.14 @ 3:16 pm

@Calvin, I believe I just got the sarcasm?

Comment by Dan 04.08.14 @ 3:17 pm

I was writing tongue in cheek regarding Bostick & Stull’s running ability. One of my favorite PITT memories is when Pat Bostick pulled the ball down and took off… only to trip over the hash mark with no defenders within five yards of him.

Actually, Sunseri wasn’t given enough credit for when he actually took off with the ball – he could pick up some good yardage that way. However, we all see his turtling and getting sacked in our mind’s eye and that blocks the memory of his better runes.

Comment by Reed 04.08.14 @ 3:18 pm

Me thinks that I smell a sarcastic fragrance surrounding your previous post there CalvinHobbes. I hadn’t realized those Turkeys possessed such an impressive bowl record. LOL!

Comment by Dr. Tom 04.08.14 @ 3:19 pm

We lost about three games last year because we gave the ball to Bennett, who couldn’t pick up tough yards under pressure, and for some reason put Conner on the bench…yeah, he fumbled, but was clearly our best runner in physical games…we beat Navy, Gtech, and probably Vtech if we give the ball to Conner 20-25 times those games…ala ND and the bowl game.

Good news this year is if Conner is hurt or ‘spits the bit’ as Steinbrenner liked to say, maybe James can come in and relieve him. Bennett is a good kid and pretty quick, but just got dropped way too often on first contact, after only 1-2 yards.

Comment by Matt N. 04.08.14 @ 3:23 pm

That old Pitt QB that has the same initials as Tom Savage was a pretty decent runner. He could pick up yardage, just couldn’t pick up many first downs when running though.

Just another way to frustrate us Pitt fans. Scramble on 3rd down needing 6 yards and sliding home with five and a half! PUNT! Awwwww, memories of the good old days.

Comment by Dr. Tom 04.08.14 @ 3:24 pm

@Dan and Dr Tom – Sarcasm? I was just selectively pointing out some facts. I was going to point out some of the Hokies big, unexpected wins but I ran out of time . . . and information. It is a pretty place to watch a game though. I was fortunate enough to visit Blacksburg in 2002 for the 3 TDs by Larry Fitz/Rod Rutherford.

Comment by CalvinHobbes 04.08.14 @ 4:44 pm

Calvin, remember that game well on ESPN national telecast … as I do the following year at Heinz when Lousaka Polite bowled their LB over for the winning TD in final minute

Comment by wbb 04.08.14 @ 5:55 pm

Anyone talking schedule strength should look at Phil Steele’s ratings which are in his college annual each year.Don’t know about this year yet but last year Pitt’s strength was better than a lot of so called powerhouse teams.

Comment by Pitt 60 04.08.14 @ 6:59 pm

Quarterback is the area where Depth is a REALLY BIG PROBLEM… and that’s not going to change much come Fall.

Despite everything Chryst is saying about why the Spring Game was cancelled… having just TWO QBs on the Roster had to be a big part of it, if not all.

No EXCUSE for the QB shortage. Poor Planning.

And yes, I realize losing Tra’Von Chapman was something not expected a year ago.

Comment by PittofDreams 04.08.14 @ 7:00 pm

I know we are on football but one last thing on BB it is just are luck to go the ACC when there BB is at a low point a very bad down turn.
and on the QB who could know chapmen would screw up if not we would still have 4.
and when conner hurt his knee you do know he was tackled out of bonds if it was up to me who ever did it would run laps for ever.

Comment by Frankcan 04.08.14 @ 8:46 pm

PofD, Poor planning? Who could predict Champman beating up and detaining his girlfriend and then Wade Freebeck deciding to decommit at the very last moment prior to LOI signing day. $hit happens my friend and that’s that! I’m just hoping that Chad makes it possible for all of us to forget about those QB shortcomings this fall.

Here’s hoping that Voytik stripes a few out of the park early season. Our fate rests in the hands of our depleted QB corps this season for sure.

Lots of folks are wringing their hands over our defense, especially with the loss of AD. Forget about those issues. The QB situation is the #1 issue to concern ourselves with this season.

The Panthers fortunes are tied directly to both the success and health of our starting QB this season.

Comment by Dr. Tom 04.08.14 @ 9:17 pm

I think we are under the Techies skin. There were a bunch of Tech fans/alums in the men’s room at halftime last fall and they were nervous that it was close and implied that they were especially worried because it was Pitt, sort of like we have some mojo on them. (Amazing the info. you can pick up in that venue.) The Tech trash talk cited here is almost harsh enough to be coming from nit or ..ears fans. We may be finding a big rival in the ACC! HTP!

Comment by OPFIM 04.08.14 @ 10:11 pm

Concern over lack of qb depth is legitimate. That said, Bertke will be available come game time….but only in an emergency. Pitt appears to be in good standing with a couple of qb’s that are ranked fairly high. Malzone is one of those that I would like them to close on.

RB depth is another issue. We have two solid RB’s coming in with the potential for a third. Therefore, I feel good with the running back position, especially with our maturing offensive line.

What I am most excited about is the progression of Jarret on the dline. He reminds me of Poe at Memphis a couple of years ago. If he is smart, he applies himself really hard this year. Works super hard next year and becomes a high draft pick. He has the size set to make a difference in the big league, but before that he needs to control the feeder league. What a great set up for him. He can either embrace it and prosper or waste away. I go with the former! Let’s go sign up a qb or something PC.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 04.08.14 @ 10:13 pm

Yes, I too would love to hear how Chryst should have “planned” for Chapman assaulting his girlfriend, and solid until the last second Freebeck suddenly turning coat.

Comment by JCE 04.09.14 @ 6:46 am

I wonder why any Pitt site would post trash from a another teams site that is obviously written by a moron who doesn’t know jack about us or any other team, just gleaned a few critical comments about opponents from blogs and threw them together. It is not worth anyone’s time giving this a second thought.

Tech was a pretty sorry team in their own right last year, I’ll volunteer to write my thoughts if they will post them on how they need to get their s** together.

Comment by PittMan 04.09.14 @ 6:55 am

As I recall, don’t we have some converted QBs enrolling this Fall? If so, the QB situation might not be so dire.

Comment by steve1 04.09.14 @ 7:46 am

we have a walkon from Upper St Clair this fall, who will probably run the scout team.

Thus we have Voytik, backed up by senior who was a walk-on, then a natural freshman, followed by a natural freshman walk-on … although, I would expect Ronald Jones (or somebody would fit in somewhere.)

Comment by wbb 04.09.14 @ 8:50 am

Voytik will be fine. He may take some time to adjust to the game situation speed of reading, but I think if Rudolph implements it, we surprise some people with some called QB draws, zone read and plays to take advantage of his toughness and mobility.

Comment by PittMan 04.09.14 @ 11:48 am

Regarding lack of QB Depth… absolutely POOR PLANNING.

The fact is that unexpected things do happen… thus to be expected.

Chryst should have recruited more than just TWO QBs if “TWO” was the Number he wanted.

Duh. Of course, there was no way to see Chapman getting arrested and charged and then pleading guilty.

The point is that it was a year ago this month that Chapman got arrested. That was plenty of time to go after another QB… JC or otherwise… to help build a BUFFER in case Chapman were to be lost.

Chryst did exactly that now by bringing in the QB from Upper St. Clair. But a year too late and still one QB short.

Comment by PittofDreams 04.09.14 @ 2:02 pm

POD- So Chryst should’ve tried to get 3 qb commitments in the same class? Brilliant. Hopefully he at least learns to look to this message board to guide his future decisions.

Comment by 1618mt 04.10.14 @ 8:05 am

The plan probably was to take 2 QB’s in the class and then a walk-on. Then that got blown up because Freebeck changed his mind in the last week before LOI day. You can’t hedge your bets by offering 3 QB’s “just in case”. There are only so many scholarships available each year. Not to mention, what caliber of player are you going to get to be the THIRD QB in a class? Only one can play at a time, and there is only so much playing time to go around in a 5 year stretch. Duh.

Comment by JCE 04.10.14 @ 10:00 am

1618mt… Did you read my post?

Comment by PittofDreams 04.10.14 @ 11:16 am

Yep. Disagree with the logic, that’s all. It’s a tough spot for Chryst due to failings of the admin before him. You can’t recruit 3 freshmen in case one bails, so that leaves you with only the juco/transfer option. This would’ve been a reasonable option if we did not have our suspected qb of the future already here, but we do.

Comment by 1618mt 04.10.14 @ 1:11 pm

1618mt… Thanks for the response.

However, no question that Chryst has misplayed things as far as the position of Quarterback goes.

You desperately need to add Quarterbacks to your roster and you place all of your faith in two 18-year-olds NOT CHANGING THEIR MINDS.

That is a little less than BRILLIANT.

Comment by PittofDreams 04.10.14 @ 2:36 pm

Bottom Line… After the turmoil, the defections, and the purging of QBs at “Happless Valley”… Penn State has FOUR QBs on its roster this Spring.

PITT has TWO.

Comment by PittofDreams 04.10.14 @ 2:46 pm

Ok, but like I said, that doesn’t change anything, you can’t recruit 3 freshmen qbs. Juco & transfer options are a crap shoot & could cause worse problems. We still have 3 qbs now, time to suck it up, & recruit for next year.

Comment by 1618mt 04.10.14 @ 2:48 pm

Savage played the entire year last year, as did Tino the year before him…having two QBs and a fairly well-regarded freshman to back them up should be okay for depth…and a walk-on and Jones for emergency. Not worried about depth, just quality at this point.

Savage could take a beating however, and turtling Tino saved himself from a similar fate, so should be interesting to see how much abuse Voytik and Anderson can bear, as neither is very large. My guess is a pretty highly regarded recruit from somewhere else might look to transfer this year to Pitt if Voytik has a rocky summer camp and doesn’t look like three year starter material.

Comment by Matt N. 04.11.14 @ 12:32 am

If Voytik got hurt or stunk it up, I really believe Anderson would surprise some people and play well…has kind of a Cavanaugh vibe to him — I know, that’s sacred territory for some of you.

Comment by Matt N. 04.11.14 @ 12:35 am

“…you place all of your faith in two 18-year-olds NOT CHANGING THEIR MINDS.”

I’m sorry, but you could say this about every recruit at every position. Don’t see how this firms up your argument.
