Stopping the Run, Playing the Pass

Filed under: Football — Chas @ 10:26 am

As training camp has progressed, we read the stories. Digest some of the previews and analysis. Not all of it is simply the happiness of talking, reading and thinking about football.

With Coach Paul Chryst, a lot of time has been spent on the offense. With good reason. That’s the area with the real questions. The real problems that had to be addressed. The QB. Offensive line. Running backs. Wide receiver depth.

Contrast that with the defense where the only real questions were with the linebackers and simply who would be behind the starters on defense.

The defense needs some attention. Not simply because of the questions with new Defensive Coordinator Matt House. While that is certainly something I have made my concerns known, is not the issue today.

My thoughts are about what this defense wants to be. The defense shifted to a 4-3 when Chryst came to Pitt. No big deal. In the ACC it is ab0ut 8-6 4-3 vs. 3-4 base defenses.

Part of that is because Pitt’s stated goal on defense is to bring more pressure up-front. To control the line of scrimmage. Something that requires more players on the line.

Someone like Ejuan Price who was successful as an outside linebacker now finds himself battling to become a defensive end and who will see a lot of actions when Pitt wants to bring pressure on the quarterback. He admits this is still a bit of a struggle.

Price was more comfortable in the 3-4 that Pitt used two years ago when he started five games and recorded four sacks as a freshman. The 4-3 installed by coach Paul Chryst wasn’t his defense of choice.

“I feel like I’m naturally a 3-4 outside linebacker,” Price said.

He worked at the new defense and now understands it, he said.

“I am almost 97 percent on top of everything,” said Price, who knocked down a Tom Savage pass at the line of scrimmage Monday. “It’s allowing me to play faster, so I love it.”

Bam Bradley redshirted last year and found himself moved from safety to outside linebacker. Part of the reason is that he is there to provide more coverage against the pass.

Bradley played safety in high school at Trotwood-Madison near Dayton, Ohio, and spent last year learning his new position at strong side linebacker.

“It was harder than I thought it was going to be, and I’m still adjusting to it right now,” he said. “I’m used to having everything in front of me playing safety, but now I have to turn around and look behind me, so it’s a little change up.”

There are some similarities, though. Specifically, Bradley’s spot has a lot of pass-coverage responsibilities, so the converted safety feels at home. Most times, he’s covering an opposing slot receiver.

Bradley said he has been able to pick up the position more quickly this fall because new defensive coordinator Matt House has simplified the defense, which allows the players to think less and play faster.

“Last year, it was a whole lot of different stuff,” Bradley said. “This year, they’re just trying to make it real simple for us so we can just play fast and just run the alleys.”

Now that he has adjusted to the new spot, he’s starting to reap the rewards. Even after he missed a few days to attend a relative’s funeral last week, Bradley jumped right back into the first-team rotation.

Athleticism, being better against the pass is a big thing in the linebackers. Anthony Gonzalez was moved from safety to an outside linebacker spot. Todd Thomas has always been better against the pass than the run.

A lot of the changes to the make-up of the linebackers is an adjustment to the fact that more and more offenses adopt spread principles of multiple receiving targets. Pitt’s defense is making the change to have more athleticism behind the line that can defend the pass.

For all the grief Max Gruder still gets for being burned on passing plays, he was a run-first linebacker often stuck on the outside because there was nobody better and little help with the rest of the linebackers. Guys who were just as bad against the pass — if not worse. (Examples: in 2010, Gruder was the MLB and on the outside was Tristan Roberts and Greg Williams. In 2011, he was stuck outside along with Brandon Lindsey — converted from the D-line, Greg Williams and a hobbled Todd Thomas).

At the same time, that means Pitt is putting more pressure on the four guys up-front to make the plays against the run. Even last year, it was a problem against the run if the front-four didn’t make the tackle. The linebackers (outside of maybe Shane Gordon) and the safeties definitely struggled to handle run defense. This was also noted in this preview of Pitt.

If the defense is truly going to be the strength of this team, either the D-line will have to be extremely stout against the run. Or the linebackers will have to improve significantly in the run defense.

At the start of the season last year, Pitt’s D-Linemen looked pitifully slow. Seemed to improve through the course of the season.

With Price back and the addition of Durham, things should even be better.

However, still fearing what was witnessed in the Bowl Game with Huxtable no longer in charge.

Mark my word, this defense will struggle big time. The offense will be better than most predict but the defense will give a lot of big plays and points. I’ve been concerned about this since the spring and glad you wrote about it.

Comment by DJS 08.20.13 @ 10:37 am

I think Ezell and Bull wil be big keys to stoppig the run.

Comment by wbb 08.20.13 @ 11:15 am

Does Emanuel Rackard still play for the Panthers? Had a knee injury against ND last year, has that ended his Pitt career? Seems as though he has been invisible at camp this fall at the LB position.

Comment by Dr. Tom 08.20.13 @ 11:26 am

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say the offense will exceed the expectations of most and the defense will underachieve. Our LB corps leaves a lot to be desired and I think we could have issues stopping the run, especially to the outside. If RBs get past the line of scrimmage, I’m not confident our LBs will get the job done.

The offense on the other hand has a ton of options. I’m very pleased with run blocking, especially on the left side. We have numerous weapons, especially on short passes: Holtz and Garner on short passes plus WR screens will be consistent “chain movers” on 3rd and 4 to 6 yards.

If Savage can avoid sack trouble and costly interceptions (very few INTs in camp) we’ll be able to move the ball on anyone outside of top defenses.

Re: Huxtable / Bowl Game.

I don’t think we would have fared much better against Ole Miss even with Huxtable at the controls. They ran the spread offense. As did Cincy, as did YSU. Yes, I am saying Huxtable’s system was not geared towards stopping the spread.

I guess the question is whether House’s defense can stop anything at all.

For the record I recently read that the Steelers defense never does any hitting in camp. So maybe the “Hit safely” strategy Pitt is employing will pay off…

Depth will be the key going forward for the D, especially along the line, while running against quicker offenses in the ACC. Overall depth is not yet where it needs to be, and Pitt could get worn down this year in some games.

FWIW, 5 of Pitt’s 6 PA recruits are listed as pre-season 1st team all state by PA Football News:

AAAA – Grimm, Blair, Wirginis, Zeise
AA – Amara

Pitt still has a shot at these other 1st teamers:

AAAA – Bookser
AA – Henry and Fields from Aliquippa, and McKenzie (even though he never seems to give Pitt any love).

Comment by Iron Duke 08.20.13 @ 12:13 pm

I am not sure why the big concern about the D. We should be pretty stout up the middle. The outside linebackers, if not big are more mobile and there is obviously more depth than in the past. Today’s paper makes it sound like Bradley may hold on to first string, which surprises me having seen Thomas play and tackle. No one seems to be pushing Gonzalez so he must be doing well. We have new D-ends so we will have to see how they stop the run.

I am more concerned with the defense of short passes which always seem to hurt us. But again, the linebackers are supposedly quicker.

Comment by gc 08.20.13 @ 12:22 pm

I will guarantee that Wirignis will not make the post-season all-state team (in any classification)

Comment by wbb 08.20.13 @ 12:27 pm

I’m guessing Bradley is ahead of Thomas until he screws up. His job is on razor thin wire the first few weeks. I’m also guessing Caprara wasn’t working out there, probably a speed issue. He needs to get up to about 230-235 and be a run thumper and let the OLBs be fast and handle pass coverage.

Comment by Justin 08.20.13 @ 1:07 pm

My biggest concern on the entire team is not Chryst or even the personnel, it the D-Coordinator. Not saying he won’t be very good, not saying he will, but my only live experience is the Ole Miss game. I know he didn’t have a lot of time to prepare, etc., but its hard to purge that memory, only different results can do it for me.

Comment by 1618mt 08.20.13 @ 1:34 pm

I think its smart of house to simplify the defense. he will be learning on the job without a doubt but by making things less complex I think that helps both him and the players.

as an aside, im glad Bam Bradley is becoming a player. I really liked him as a recruit. he hit like a truck and had good instincts as a safety.

Comment by pk 08.20.13 @ 2:04 pm

I thought Wirgins is out for the year with an injury?

If Bradley is that good he may be moved to the other side. I am sure they are looking for the best three to start and Thomas will be one of them.

Who is going to replace Vinopal when his lack of speed is exposed? Who are the second team safeties?

Comment by notrocketscience 08.20.13 @ 3:04 pm

Anthony Gonzalez has very quietly held onto his starting gig the entire summer. I’ve never seen a new starter get so little attention paid to him.

Ten Least Anticipated 2013 FBS College Football Games

Pittsburgh Panthers at Duke Blue Devils
Saturday, Sept. 21, Time/TV TBD

Are there any two schools in the nation that consistently underachieve more than Pittsburgh and Duke? Combined, the two schools have managed to lose games to schools like Richmond, Army, Youngstown State, and Bowling Green since 2008. If college football hadn’t abolished the tie back in 1996, I would bet the money line that this one ends 13-13.

well… i was planning on attending since i have a lot of duke alum friends, so i’m at least one person looking forward to the game.

The Tribune just reported that Tra’von Chapman’s fate is in the hands of Pitt Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg.

Comment by Dr. Tom 08.20.13 @ 3:57 pm

That’s probably the best thing. Nordy is out soon and could be considered “impartial” although if Steve wants him back…..Chap is probably back on Triple Secret Probation.

Comment by tedsptman 08.20.13 @ 4:34 pm

It is interesting Nordy is calling this one. For all of those who think Wanny wasn’t let go due to the police blogs, this level of decision tells me Nordy was Pis** over the level of player conduct under Wanny. And he is now taking the conduct of Pitt athletes as little tolerance. HCPC clearly uderstands that Nordy wants no off field issues.

Comment by chethejet 08.20.13 @ 4:51 pm

My 2 cents: He’s back to serve as Nordy’s legacy to Pitt athletics.

Triple Secret Probation? tedsptman, it doesn’t get any tougher than that.

Yes Wirginis out the year, hence wbb’s comment. And Blair missed all of last year, right?

Always good to be mentioned in the same breath as Duke in anything but football.

Comment by Iron Duke 08.20.13 @ 5:57 pm

Pretty good SB article, thx for linking to it Chas !

The gist I get from PC & company putting the undersized Bradley and Gonzo at OLB’s is to cover the pass better. Since both played Safety before.

So that is going to put the pressure on the D-Line and Gordon on stopping the run. Sometimes they did last year and sometimes they didn’t.

But I’m thinking that PITT’s OLB’s are still going to have to step up and play the run tough as well. Maybe not so much against the lightweights in the schedule, but most certainly against the better teams.

And I don’t know if we have that Taglianetti (sp) type nickle back who can also play like a 4rth LB or Pantherback position.

After the first week, we’ll have 3 games against lesser competition, where the defense will have to dominate the opposition. That would be New Mexico, Duke and UVA.

Comment by notrocketscience 08.20.13 @ 3:04 pm

Good question NRS.
Think I read somewhere Cullen Christian is practicing as a Safety. They could always move Gonzo or Bradley back I guess if someone gets hurt or doesn’t pan out. Ryan Lewis(RSF)is also in the mix I believe.

No we know why PC recruited so many safety’s in this year’s recruiting class.

Comment by EMel 08.20.13 @ 6:58 pm

@ Greg in New Orleans.

I too am looking forward to the Duke game. Pitt’s very 1rst ACC road game and I’ll be there probably.

Duke is better than they usually are, as they played Cincy tough in the Belk Bowl last year, although I haven’t looked to see what graduation losses did to them.

Anyway it’s a much more winnable road game than most opponents in the ACC would be.

Let’s go Pitt !!!

typo 2nd post above ** (last line)

Now we know why PC recruited so many safety’s…..

The Clairton pipeline will supply our safeties.
