Please Wait on Bubble Talk

I know, it is the topic lately. Whether fans or media. With Travon Woodall healthy, Pitt is surging (Insider subs) with 3 straight wins. They look like a completely different team. The team left for dead as recently as last week now has a pulse.

And so goes all the talk about if Pitt can make the NCAA Tournament.

I do get it. Especially from the media side. It’s a guaranteed read when you talk about the bubble (trust me, the most commented most read stuff I did for NCAA Basketball FanHouse outside of the NCAA Tournament was “bubble” posts). It’s a big reason why you see these discussions happening earlier and earlier.

The importance of the NCAA Tournament and interest in it continues to thrive, and so all talk of who is in or out gets more attention/discussion. And following the Super Bowl on Sunday, you can bet that there will be even more of it.

Now here’s the reality. It’s too soon. It’s all theoretical. Is Pitt on the bubble? Are they outside the bubble? What do they have to do to make the Tournament? There are 8 games left for Pitt plus the Big East Tournament. That goes for all the other teams that you already hear being discussed in terms of “can they get in, get in the conversation, get on the bubble, etc.”

When should bubble talk begin? I say, in about 2 weeks. At that point there are only a small handful of games left and the conference tournaments. Computer numbers (RPI, Sagarin, Pomeroy) are all relatively stable and unlikely to fluctuate too far the rest of the way. At that point you can legitimately project who is most likely in. How many spots are left and what teams should be in the discussion for the remaining spots, and what they might be able to do or have happen to others for them to make it.

You cannot do that right now. There are too many teams that still have a shot. That may fall out. Opinions and biases skew the argument too much because solid numbers are not there.

We don’t know for sure which games will be considered bad losses or good wins. We have too many undefined variables to make a really reasonable and logical argument one way or the other.

Right now there is only one formula. It is very is simple. Win.

You can create multiple scenarios by which Pitt gets in, but it still comes down to winning almost all of the remaining games. We do no know how much emphasis the selection committee will place on Woodall’s injury factoring into things. They can’t ignore all the losses without him. The more Pitt wins with Woodall, though, the stronger Pitt’s case will be that it should be more heavily factored into the equation.

So keep winning. Next up, the Pre-Super Bowl game on Sunday against Villanova.

The margin for error is really, really slim but if they can finish 6-2 over the next 8 regular season games and with a few wins in the BE tourney they might just pull it off.

I’m glad they turned it around and look competitive, at least we see a glimmer of hope for the remainder of the season.

I’m optomistic from what I’ve seen in the last few games. However when they win as many in a row, as they lost in the losing stretch, then it will be ok to talk seriously about the NCAA Tournament. So let’s see how they finish the season and do in the Big East Torunamant. Go Panthers!

Comment by Justinian 02.03.12 @ 10:51 am

Indeed, the surest way to get in is to win out or drop only 1. There’s a lot of basketball left and a lot of factors (the most troubling of which, to me, is that this is a down year for the BE).

I think many are, like myself, trying to figure out how much of their heart they can put on the line for the remaining games and/or how do approach the remaining games (with an eye toward the immediate future of the post-season, or alternative with an eye towards next year).

This could either be the greatest mid-season turn around in Pitt history and a testament to the tenacity of the team/coaches, or just another way the Panthers have figured out to break our hearts.

Dang you Panthers, us fans can not rest easy that we’ll be in the big dance until the final game of the season (or not even until BE Tourny).

Each game from here on is like a playoff game. The loser of the Pitt/Nova game is probably done. If Pitt can win both games against South Florida and beat Seton Hall on the road, then those teams may be out. As long as the team continues to work on improving, and take one game at a time, they should finish strong.

We cannot get ahead of ourselves. We need to focus on the current game only. The one after that is of no importance if we do not take care of business in the current one.

Really like where Pitt will be in the ACC in both football and basketball. Enjoy going to UVA for football games but next time hopefully we will win.

Say we go 7 and 3 the rest of the way…6 and 2 BE and 1-1 in tourney. That puts us at 21 – 12, 16 – 6 with Woodall. I think that is a compelling enough argument.

But going 6 and 2 is going to be really, really hard. Everyone left on the schedule has a quality win or two, four are on the road, and one is against a rival looking for revenge. I don’t see it happening. I predict we go 5 and 3, 1-1 in Tourn, and are one of the last 8 out on Selection Sunday.

Well done, Chas. Your column today was well written, logical and quite relevant. I write this not just because I agree with you, but also because it should have been written and trumpeted. That’s the kind of sports journalism I respect and expect from a Pittsburgh newspaper. Rev. George from Columbus

Well said Rev. Nice work Chas.

Bubble talk at this point is as silly as rankings before before January. And nothing is sillier than preseason rankings and NCAA field predictions.

I do like Pitt’s chances if they can muster wins against UConn, Louisville, Seton Hall and WVU. All are ahead of Pitt in the RPI and the first three are road games which increases the weight counts for more if Pitt were to win.

Hopefully they start if off right with a hard fought win against Nova on Sunday.

I’m happy just with the fact that the Panthers are back from the dead! It is simply amazing how much of a transformation this team has gone through with the addition of Woodall back into the rotation.

This team all of a sudden is playing with some attitude as if they have something to prove. It will be interesting to see how far down the stretch that they can carry it.

Bubbles,,,,,,bubbles,,, what bubbles???

Comment by Dr. Tom 02.03.12 @ 12:54 pm

To say they have to go 6-2 isn’t enough. They have to be the right 6 wins and 2 losses that aren’t bad losses. Really, need to win all home games, then win 2 of 4 against UConn, Louisville, USF and Seton Hall and maybe really either UConn or Louisville. And none of those 4 are easy — USF is very improved.

Whatever, if they play well the rest of the way, it’s good to see.

Comment by velvil 02.03.12 @ 2:13 pm

Let’s beat Nova first.

Comment by Justinian 02.03.12 @ 2:42 pm

Chas is right. You can never judge a bubble team in a vacuum …. it is all dependent on what another 12 to 20 teams are doing

Comment by wbb 02.03.12 @ 2:57 pm

Big concern is when we next run into a team that likes to press. The turn over problem will be back and I’m not sure the return of Woodall is enough to counter the problem. Naz and Patterson both really struggle.

Comment by Jimbo 02.03.12 @ 9:30 pm

While I agree that “bubble talk” may be premature, it is very compelling from the standpoint of a fan. We have endured much heartache and disappointment as fans this season, so feel free to point out the dangers, but let us also enjoy our daydreams and fantasies of working our way back into the NCAAs! In mid-January, ANY tournament talk wouldve been considered ludicrous. Now-because of Pitt’s reputation-it’s not so far-fetched.
