Hell Freezes Over

Had to work at 4 am today. Then deal with my kids on summer vacation. So, I go and take a nap and wake up to this?

On hiatus since 2000, the Pitt-Penn State series will again resume after the two universities signed a home-and-home agreement for the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

Pitt will host the initial game at Heinz Field on September 10, 2016. The Panthers will play at Penn State on September 16, 2017.

“This is an exciting day for college football fans,” Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson said. “The tremendous history of this rivalry is well documented and the passion that fans have for this game is enormous. We are very pleased that this two-game series is now in place and a new generation of fans can experience the excitement of a Pitt-Penn State football game beginning in 2016.”

“As a young football fan in Texas, I used to love watching Pitt and Penn State play every November,” first-year Pitt head coach Todd Graham said. “The games were intense and featured some of the greatest players in the history of college football. The resumption of this series is great for the two schools and football fans everywhere.”

Just how long was I really asleep?

And from the Penn State side:

One of the nation’s fiercest football rivalries is set to be renewed, as old rivals Penn State and Pittsburgh will meet again on the gridiron in 2016 and 2017.

Tim Curley, Penn State Director of Athletics, and Steve Pederson, Pitt Director of Athletics, made the announcement today that the long-time rivals are scheduled to meet September 10, 2016 in Pittsburgh and September 16, 2017 in Beaver Stadium.

“We are very excited about renewing our rivalry with Pitt,” Curley stated. “We have worked our schedules to play some of our neighboring rivalries like Syracuse, Rutgers and Temple and are glad to have identified dates that worked for our schedules to play Pitt. The Penn State-Pitt game was one that football fans across the Commonwealth have been passionate about. There have been many memorable Penn State-Pitt games, featuring outstanding players and coaches, and we look forward to playing the Panthers again. “

Well, I didn’t expect this. Honestly, I was of the belief that Pitt and Penn State would not even agree to any series until well after Joe Paterno had retired.

The 96 previous games makes Pitt the opponent Penn State has played most frequently in their history. Penn State is Pitt’s second most played opponent behind West Virgina, which is presently 102 meetings

I look forward to more on this, and while it is still more than five years away, a very good think.

Good luck, hope no one gets hurt… and that’s about the last nice thing you guys will hear from me until 2018 😛

JoePa won’t be around in 2016/2017 to see it happen. Poopy Pants will either be in a retirement home or 6 feet under at that time. Congrats to both sides for doing the right thing despite the old man’s objections.

Isn’t it officially time to bring back the “Penn State Sucks” part of the fight song?

I’m so amped up I think I might drive down to Heinz Field and start tailgating. Is 5 Years to long for a tailgate to last?

Comment by CJK 06.14.11 @ 4:01 pm

Wow. Never saw this coming. I’ve had to pinch myself a few times to make sure I wasn’t dreaming and was reading the release correctly. Can’t wait for the game!

Comment by Greg 06.14.11 @ 4:10 pm

I’m not so sure that JoePa will still be there while someone else will be coaching Pitt.

After the last meeting in 00, did anyone think that more than a decade later that JoePa is still there and Pitt would be 2 coaches removed?

Comment by wbb 06.14.11 @ 4:13 pm

make that 4 coaches removed

Comment by wbb 06.14.11 @ 4:15 pm

The Pitt press release had a quote from the AD and the HC…the PSU press release had a quote from the AD. Hmmmm.

Do you think anyone told JoePa yet? I’ll bet he poops his pants when he hears this one.

Comment by boubacar aw 06.14.11 @ 4:28 pm

The cross state hate resumes! Can;t wait to see the forcibly apathetic reaction from the Nits.

“We don’t need you! We don’t need anyone! We have natural rivals like..Nebraska…and Ohio State…yeah OSU definitely hates us!”

Comment by tacocat 06.14.11 @ 4:31 pm

I was still looking for the “April Fools” attached somewhere when I saw it confirmed here…

Comment by Bowling Green Panther 06.14.11 @ 4:31 pm

And I think this for sure indicates that JoePa is out in a few years. There’s no way I can see the AD putting this together without knowing the old guy is planning on retiring in 1-4 years.

No one can reasonably estimate on Graham’s position in 5 years. But we can certainly make snarky jokes about it 😀

Dejan is spot on:

just heard on radio that an opening became available for PSU in 2016 and Curley called Pederson. This comes from Pederson.

Also note that Curley said that it would be unlikely that the series would go further immediately beyond 2017 because of their commitment for cross-sectional games across the country .. although it is a possibility it could be renewed for future dates.

Comment by wbb 06.14.11 @ 4:56 pm

Was the basketball talk just a smoke screen? If so it was brilliant.

If this was a power play by the AD, then that was also brilliant. The old man made his feelings clear about playing Pitt, there is no chance he approved this. What better way to test your power base then to directly go against JoePa’s wishes and see what happens. Will the old man take it without a fight, will he make a move on the AD, or will he take this as the sign (that it is) that he is no longer really in charge and it is time to go?

Very interesting.

Comment by Cool Hand Nuke 06.14.11 @ 5:31 pm

Great news, was not expecting this at all. Unfortunately, Curley and Penn State see this as the same thing as the 2 games they played with with Syracuse and Temple recently. Penn State has no incentive to play a former rival like Syracuse annually because they are not competitive enough right now. Our job is simply to win the Big East a few times and become a top-tier Big East program between now and 2016. If we continue to have 7-6 seasons, this won’t be an annual thing like we all want it to be.

Comment by Alex P 06.14.11 @ 5:34 pm

Even if Pitt goes 11-1 for the next 5 years until we play them, State Penn will back out after the series is over because they want to pad their non-con with cupcakes. It’s almost a lose/lose for them. If we stink, they get ripped for playing a patsy. If we are respectable, they could lose and their dreams of a national championship could be ruined. I don’t get the justification that this series couldn’t be renewed annually because of ‘their committment to cross sectional games across the country.’ I would think the vast majority of Penn State alum would want this game on the schedule each year. And, most alum probably live within a 6 hour drive or could easily fly back for this game. Their brand is strongest in the Northeast where their alum work and live unless they think of themselves as a ‘national’ school and those arrogant pricks probably do. I do think this is a power move by the AD to show the old man that his days are numbered and could serve notice to poopy pants to not over stay his welcome.

Comment by TX Panther 06.14.11 @ 6:05 pm

Or, THEY stink and WE get ripped for playing a patsy. It is five years away, we can dream, can’t we?

Comment by Pwmcdupitt 06.14.11 @ 6:42 pm

My prediction: A UFO will land at Heinz Field on that day and shoot Joe Paterno in the groin. Pitt wins 28-27 in an intense game. Also on this day, Dana Holgorsen is fired from Michigan where he has been an assistant for 3 years. Alcohol related.

Seriously, this is great news. It will be nice to see a rivalry that we all grew up watching and was then taken away from us suddenly. Good stuff.

It seems anti climactic to me. Penn State has been irrelevant for years, except in Happy Valley. Maybe they think this will help recruiting in W. PA. It will be nice to see a packed stadium once in the next six years.

Comment by gc 06.15.11 @ 7:08 am

Tim Curley was on the FAN and….well, here’s his story:

PSU had an opening. They called Pitt about a home and home series because….they have a lot of alumni in the Pittsburgh area and wanted to give them a chance to see a game. That’s it. Nothing about 100 years of tradition, a great rivalry, good for the state….nothing.

Now I hate them more than ever.

Comment by KeyboardKev 06.15.11 @ 7:51 am

Curley lumped Pitt with other ‘neighboring’ rivalries like Temple, Rutgers and Syracuse. Now I don’t know about the history of PSU vs Cuse or Temple, but I’m pretty sure that PSU has played Rutgers just about 30 times and won all but 2 or 3. I would assume Temple would be more of the same.

Comment by wbb 06.15.11 @ 8:16 am

Same old Joe Pa jokes, huh? He walks 6 miles a day. How many of you “athletes” can do the same? It will be nice for you guys to have Penn State fans fill your stadium foe once, eh? Keep up with the poop jokes. Stay classy.

Comment by Mike 06.15.11 @ 8:31 am

I’ve been a Pitt fan my whole life & there is nothing & I mean NOTHING like a good old fashioned Pitt – Penn State game !.(Will never forget the 48-14 home loss with the 2nd most talented Pitt team ever assembled.) Pitt will be back to national prominence in 5 years & the first game will be huge! You heard it hear first, Circle Nov. 25th on your calenders : Biggest Pitt-WVU game in history for many reasons; Graham v. Holgorsen I and I truly feel both teams will be undefeated @ kickoff !!

Comment by ROCKY20 06.15.11 @ 8:39 am

Pitt-PSU was a great rivalry. Pitt-WVU IS a great rivalry. A 2-game series every 15 or so years won’t bring the tradition back. The almighty $$ has changed the CFB landscape more than a few times and will continue to be the driver in regards to who/where teams play.

There are still going to be changes to the BCS conferences. There may not even be a BCS by 2016. Tradition is dying in CFB. It’s all business now. Pitt is lucky to have a rival. It’s rather sad PSU can’t say the same.

Comment by pghFred 06.15.11 @ 8:43 am

Welcome to the party Mike. I can bust some new jokes out: still smell like cow manure on your campus? Still nothing to do there until the Redneck Comedy Tour comes through the BJC? Still trying to be an accepted University for anything but golf course studies?

Comment by BigEgg 06.15.11 @ 8:45 am

OK, he pooped himself. Fine. Despite pooping himself, he still has done more to effect change and positively impact the lives of those with whom he’s been associated than many of the posters on this board can ever dream of doing (save the Reverend from Columbus). How many coaches have you cycled through since the last meeting? 3? And number 4 hasn’t even won a game at Pitt. Make the poop jokes all you want, but remember this – “Old Poopy Pants” has OWNED you guys.

Comment by Spats 06.15.11 @ 8:51 am

@Mike, true on the stadium fill up, the shame is, the 40,000 at Pitt games are 10x louder than the 100,000K funeral home atmosphere at Beaver Stadium!! Ya, a Sat night 8:00 game on nat tv, ya, you cheer a bit. Noon and 3:00 games against Minnesota and Northwestern: DEAD as a door nail!!!

@Spats. Owned, hardly, yes you lead the series, but “owned” is when the other team never wins, again hardly. As a matter of fact, I believe we shut you out the last time we played. Goose egg, naughta, zip, zero, nothing!!

Comment by Dan 06.15.11 @ 10:04 am

Really? I was at a 3:30 game last year vs. Northwestern and the place was nuts. How often do hou even get close to 40000 people? Not ticket sales but actually showing up? Try to get PSI tickets on ebay or off a scalper and see what you pay. Last Pitt game I was at (vs Syracuse) I bought club box seats off a scalper for $5. He wanted 2 bucks for regular seats. A real hot ticket, huh? Remember we get more people showing up for spring practice games than you do for the big ones. Why do you think you have to play games on Thursday nights? Because no one will watch otherwise.

Comment by Mike 06.15.11 @ 10:16 am

Yes, the overall series is only an 8 game difference, but my statement was that Paterno has owned Pitt. 23-7-1 vs. Pitt? Yeah, I’d say a .767 winning percentage against a team is pretty close to owning that team.

And 48-14 > 12-0.

Comment by Spats 06.15.11 @ 10:21 am

Spats – Joe Pa is a real class act for employing child molestors and then covering it up. Pitt doesn’t have any Sandusky’s that I’m aware of.

Comment by TX Panther 06.15.11 @ 10:54 am

@Mike, I think that your presence on this blog proves that there is an actual rivalry that exists between Pitt and PSU. Most of you Nit fans don’t consider us rivals worthy to play the beloved Lions. I was at the Penn State-Michigan State “rivalry” game this year and I can tell you that Beaver had an embarrassing atmosphere that day. The students were on break but the minority Sparty fans were much more vocal than PSU fans were. Beaver Stadium is an old piece of shit, a terrible fan experience.

Comment by Alex P 06.15.11 @ 11:00 am

Perhaps both presidents realized they are under attack from a Republican governor and his cronies. Fighting back ridiculous state budget cuts all done to give private industry more profits may have been the catalyst. Something was going on, as this announcement shocked even those fans who regularly check in here.

Comment by TonyinHouston 06.15.11 @ 11:09 am

You NITTERS can look down upon us Pitt fans. I don’t care what you arrogant pricks think about us or this rivalry. This game is good for the state and both schools whether you care to believe it or not. So continue with your idol worshipping of your false god Paturdo. And, go F a cow or Santorum. I would have suggested a sheep but the Hoopies have you beat.

Comment by TX Panther 06.15.11 @ 11:11 am

Yeah,, that’s why the place was on the cover of SI being billed as “The Greatest Show in College Football.”

Comment by Mike 06.15.11 @ 11:22 am

Mike, the fact that you get so many people for spring practice is the same reason that you get > 100,000 for a game vs Juniata. “I mean we are talking about (spirng) practice, man!”

I’ve been reading a lot of the public blogs (Post-Gazette, Trib, CBS.com, etc) and, as usual, a multitude of PSU fans post just how insigniifcant the game is and Pitt means nothing to PSU … how hypocritcal can you get??? If it means nothing, those people wouldn’t bothering posting and you, Mike, wouldn’t be on this site.

Further, Curley made the point that since there are PSU alum all over the country and they need to schedule games all over .. which may be true .. but just how many more alums are in the PGH area vs Miami, Birmingham or Lincoln??

Comment by wbb 06.15.11 @ 11:22 am

I never said the game wasn’t important to me. With am looking forward to it and was interested in thoughts from Pitt fans. I got ticked when the typical “poopy pants” comments were thrown at a guy that, like him or not, how’s been pretty good for college athletics.

Comment by Mike 06.15.11 @ 11:32 am

@ TX Panther, I just find it amazing that you have definitive evidence that a grand jury investigation was unable to uncover in more than a year and a half of investigations. Wow.

And I don’t think any of the responses here could be construed as looking down on Pitt fans. Instead, we were responding to your classless statements and sophomoric humor.

Comment by Spats 06.15.11 @ 11:38 am

This comment pertains solely to “Mike’s” position that Pitt / Penn St. is no longer a rivalry. Mike, I graduated from Pitt in 2005. The majority of my friends graduated college from either Pitt or Penn St. Since the home-and-home was announced yesterday afternoon, my friends and I have been calling, emailing, texting, facebooking (I know, not an actual word…yet) each other non-stop. I live in Florida now, and even my coworkers, who are all either UF or FSU alum, spent all of yesterday afternoon and majority of this morning talking about how great it is that Pitt and Penn St. are scheduled to play. I think there is still a rivalry.

Comment by JAM 05 PITT 06.15.11 @ 11:53 am

Show me where I said it wasn’t a rivalry? I didn’t like the Paterno shots, that’s all.

Comment by Mike 06.15.11 @ 12:06 pm

Mike and Spatz, come to think of it, maybe you’re right. You know, the way you look down at Pitt and the game is just another game on the schedule?? I just realized, it’s the same way Michigan and Ohio State look at Penn State!!!
LMAO!!!!

Comment by Dan 06.15.11 @ 12:28 pm

I apologize for offending you very classy holier than thou pricks. I guess JoePa jokes are banned in PA but they aren’t in TEXAS or on this blog. Although you claim you don’t look down on us, your superiority complex makes for a good laugh (you don’t look down on us because you’re always looking up). Paterno was good for athletics 20 years ago. He’s now just a bitter old fart that has over stayed his welcome. He didn’t poop his pants during the Majors/Sherrill era but he had a colon back then. Nobody cares about State Penn outside the Northeast so stop smelling the cow patties.

Comment by TX Panther 06.15.11 @ 12:49 pm

@ Spatz, I’ll take the 12-0, last time they played, say all you want, two nephews, bro-n-law, and best man in my wedding, they say the same thing, till you get some booze in them, then, “I effin hate Pitt, I hate we lost the last game and more expletives”

@Mike, seem like a decent guy, posted that last comment without reading your last couple posts.

I agree, some light hearted fun is ok, but the one you mention, no need for that. Anyone that makes that comment, think about your own father, grandfather, and someday yourself, we all get old fellas.

Yes, he has been great for college football, is a good man, and a great American.

Which, makes me want to beat you all the more!!!
LOL

Comment by Dan 06.15.11 @ 12:54 pm

Still trying to figure out where I, or Mike, looked down on the game or Pitt fans. In fact, Dan, I was simply pointing out that the man you so liberally ridicule owns a 23-7-1 record against your team. I don’t recall downplaying the value of the game/rivalry.

Comment by Spats 06.15.11 @ 12:56 pm

I agree. Any Penn State fan that tells you a Pitt game means nothing is lying. And I’m not ‘Holier than Thou.’ I don’t think our education is any better than yours. I respect the heck out of Johnny Majors and Foge Fazio. I think you guys have a top 5 basketball program. Dixon may be the best coach in the country. I just hate to see cheap shots at Joe Paterno. That’s all.

Comment by Mike 06.15.11 @ 1:46 pm

Yeah, the 12-0 stung, personally, because I live near Pittsburgh. So obviously, I hear more about it than, say, somebody who lives in the eastern part of the state. But I also think the 12-0 game was not as significant, in the grand scheme of things, because there wasn’t anything at stake. Neither team was very good.

The 48-14 game meant so much more because, essentially, we were able to accomplish what you accomplished in beating WVU 13-9 in Morgantown. I would say that our loss in Iowa City in 2008 or our loss to Michigan in 2005 stung much worse than 12-0. Which is also why most Penn State fans point to that game. Not for any other reason besides the fact that it was the single most significant victory over Pitt.

Comment by Spats 06.15.11 @ 1:58 pm

Spats and Mike, no problem, Spats, I don’t think I said anything deraugatory, one or two others may have. I was just giving good natured ribbing about past games and scores. Spats, above, you’ll see my post to Mike, I think you will aprreciate it.

No need for the foul comment whatsoever!!! I agree.

I understand, as, I’ve gone on some Flyer boards when a few people posted how happy they were when Crosby had a major concussion, so, I do know how the blood pressure can build.

Most of us on here are good natured, but, the hatred is there (sports that is). You have had a much more consistent program, so, we have a little chip on our shoulder about that. And contrary to some radio personalities, I know a ton of Penn State fans, friends, co workers and many family members, and like I said, allthough they say Michigan and Ohio State are their rivals now, when you peel the layers away, or get some Jack in them, they want to beat Pitt’s ass in the worst way, if just to shut us up!! LOL

So, gents, have a good day, the rivalry will continue to build again, and I think both sides are happy about it. My email and facebook lit up all night from all of my Penn State and Pitt cronies and nephews and nieces about how pumped they were.

I’m sure you both are too, enjoy the day.

Comment by Dan 06.15.11 @ 2:41 pm

Ya, Spats, my nephew still cringes about the Iowa game!! My other nephew cringes about a Minnesota game. Don’t know when it was, I know there was a long bomb, and it was either completed or intercepted, whichever way went against PSU, and it still sickens him!! LOL

We have our share of cringers too!!

Comment by Dan 06.15.11 @ 2:43 pm

Spats & Mike, what should have stung you guys even more was letting Indiana back in the game in ’94, when despite winning the game, the pollsters dropped PSU to No. 2 in the polls behind Nebraska. What a total crock?

Just like I firmly believe that Pitt was the best team in 1980, I believe PSU should have, at the least, been co-champs in 94.

Comment by wbb 06.15.11 @ 4:05 pm

Minnesota was 1999, Homecoming game, ranked #1, start of a 3 game spiral that saw losses to Michigan and Michigan State following the Minnesota loss. Yeah, that sucked too. The Indiana game was kind of a farce, considering the late TDs were cheapies that were, essentially, meaningless. Obvioustly, the voters who look only at the fianl score beg to differ.

Comment by Spats 06.15.11 @ 10:27 pm

I guess State Penn yearned for some variety in Fall entertainment by agreeing to play Pitt again. A football game against your historic rival sure beats the other weekend events going on in State College such as the KKK rallys, the NAMBLA convention with Sandusky as the featured speaker, NRA meetings, Tea Party town halls, and tipping cows. Let the smack talk begin.

Comment by TX Panther 06.16.11 @ 11:59 am

@ TX Panther, Didn’t you guys agree to play us? Curley made the call, right? I mean, Pitt turned down the 1-1 that was proposed years ago on the grounds that Pitt wanted a long term deal, so…..

NAMBLA? Really? Stay classy. And what does this has to do with a political affiliation or exercising 2nd Amendment rights. That’s not smack talk, that just moronic babble. But hey, do whatcha’ gotta’ do.

@ Mike, WBB, and Dan – it’s refreshing to actually have some civil dialog about the game/rivalry. Appreciated. Looking forward to 2016/2017.

Comment by Spats 06.16.11 @ 2:38 pm

Spats, if you want civil dialogue, go to a Nitter blog and banter with your homeboyz. You can expect no civility from me given my hatred of your school knows no bounds. Wars aren’t meant to be civil. So go back out into the field and pick some poseys. Try not to step on any cow patties ok.

Comment by TX Panther 06.16.11 @ 3:12 pm

Never said I wanted it, but it was refreshing to find it. Your comprehension skills know no bounds, either. And, despite your numerous ramblings, you’ve failed to make a single salient point. So, yeah, I’ll “go back out into the fields to pick some poseys”. Dude, what does that even mean? You say “Let the smack talk begin” and then you say that? Wow. Just…..wow.
