SPRING PRACTICE #14

In what is increasingly becoming a one-horse race, Tino Sunseri continues to impress the coaching staff as the de facto starting QB.  Paul Zeise has, in what is a departure of sorts for him, a two page article on this subject.  Somehow Zeise swings and misses by giving the PITT team a 9-4 record in 2010 but other than that it’s a good look at where Sunseri is at this point.

But just to be contrary I’ll also disagree with this statement: “Sunseri improved as the season went on and felt more comfortable in the offense. Now he has been asked to start over again in a new offense, and he believes the transition is almost complete.” Really, Sunseri hit a high point in mid-season then went downhill over the last six games, but why nitpick when writing a puff piece?

Coach Graham weighs in on the progress so far in these spring practices and how it compares to his other coaching gigs… from the Trib-Review:

“We are coming together as a football team,” he said. “We are mentally way ahead of where I thought we would be. We coached them hard, put them in situations where they really weren’t in shape to go at.”

He said spring practice at Pitt went better than it did in initial drills at his previous coaching outposts (Rice and Tulsa).  One similarity: “We didn’t have the speed we wanted, but we developed it,” he said.

In his only season at Rice, the Owls were 7-6 and went to their first bowl game in 45 years. The next year, at Tulsa, he led the team to a 10-4 record.  “The difference (at Pitt) is we are playing a heckuva lot tougher opponents,” he said.

Well Todd, you have heckuva lot better athletes than you did at those schools also so we’ll still expect a very good first season – whether you have the ‘speed’ you want or not.

Graham also says:

“I feel really good about how we have been able to move the football in the run game this spring,” he said.  “That is going to be the key to our success how we run the football. The inside-zone will still be the bread and butter of our system – it’s the key to everything we’re doing.  It’s direct runs. If you want to be a physical team, you have to run the ball straight down.  That’s the inside zone and power.”

Of course, Ray Graham is going to be a bit tired after carrying the ball 500 times this season unless we find a back up RB.

In the post-practice quotes the HC gives us a clue as to why the team is struggling with the new offense…“Today was a helmet day. We have three helmet days that we have to get in – we had two the very first two days. We saved this one to give their legs some rest and let them get their feet back underneath them.”… Perhaps if they practiced and scrimmaged with their helmets on more often the players wouldn’t have short-term memory loss and could remember what the High Octane offense entails.

And in what be music to PITT fan’s ears he says this about his approach to late in the fourth quarter:

“We’re going to do whatever we need to do to win games. If you have a three-point or four-point lead with four minutes left in the game, you need to get the football and go. If you want to win games consistently you have to be able to do that. It’s a statement that you have to make. If you want to win a game, you have to go out there and make three first downs. Those are the things that we were talking about. We have to be aware of that.”

Good God Coach, what on earth do you mean when you say this?  That kind of thinking has been forbidden at PITT for the last five years.

Pat Bostick gives us a preview of the Blue-Gold matchup at the Spring Game.

One thing to watch for and this is where the offense had some troubles in the practice I watched, is the communication from the sideline to the field.

“We’ll go at the pace that we are used to, which is pretty brisk,” Graham said. “We hope to get about 60 offensive snaps with each group.” That’s 120 plays, or one every 15 seconds or so. Hold on to your chair and brace yourself, because the game is going to be moving fast. This fast-paced tempo will also put a premium on coach-to-player communication. Coaches in the press box will have to be efficient in their communication to the coaches and players who are signaling on the sideline, and those play-callers and signalers will have to do the same when communicating to the quarterback on the field.

And here’s a quote from Pat that cracks me up…“That means Pitt fans will get their first glimpse of speed demon Buddy Jackson on kickoff returns, new starting placekicker and kickoff man Kevin Harper, and punter Matt Yoklic. Special teams will help make April’s spring game feel like a Big East contest in October.OK, but let’s hope that would be a Big East game against Syracuse or Rutgers and not the games we have seen against WVU or UCONN of late.

Here is the latest post-game video with Graham, Patterson and Magee – again the only link I could find that works is through Facebook.  PITT needs to fix this. Facebook is only to be used for arranging clandestine love affairs with old high school girlfriends.

Magee mentions the Des Brown (walk-on RB) has done well and the HC reiterates that Brown has been a ‘shining spot’ in the offense and may do well in the fall.  Also rsFR Kevin Weatherspoon gets mentioned for the first time this spring – it will be good to have some depth at that WR slot.

Patterson talked about how Tristan Roberts, Gruder and Shane Gordon are doing at the ILB positions and also how the 2nd string DL are pushing the starters.  That is one unit I have no worries about – we have some very good talent there on the DL.

Odds and Ends:

Pat Bostick did a great interview with The Fan radio station discussing the new PITT offense.  He clearly knows what he’s talking about and presents himself very well.  Stay tuned for some more Bostick news as the season gets closer – he’s been impressing the PGH media people left and right.

It looks like we won’t see any punt returning done at the Spring Game.

For anyone attending the game and who comments on here regularly – I’ll be hosting some free beer at the Tilted Kilt (the old Calico Jack’s) before the Spring Game to celebrate my retirement from the Coast Guard – stop by if you have a chance.

Who is the author?

In and out of the three rivers, streams of death in life, whose banks were rotting into mud, whose waters, thickened with slime, invaded the Southside practice facilities and seemed to writhe at the PITT players in the extremity of an impotent despair. Nowhere could we stop long enough to get a particularized impression of how Sunseri was executing the passing game, but the general sense of vague and oppressive wonder grew upon me. It was like a weary pilgrimage amongst hints for nightmares similar to the WVU and UCONN games last season. Nothing happened. Nothing could happen. There was a touch of insanity in the practices, a sense of lugubrious drollery in the sight; and it was not dissipated by somebody on the sidelines assuring me earnestly there was a camp of opponents–he called them enemies!–hidden out of sight somewhere.”

But the reaches opened before us and closed behind, as if the forest had stepped leisurely across the water to bar the way for our return. We penetrated deeper and deeper into the 2011 PITT team’s heart of darkness.”

Next Practice: Spring Game, April 16th.

Joseph Conrad?

From today’s PG puff piece, this is quote I like the best:

Sunseri: “I’m enjoying it. I like it a lot because I think we’re able to show off our team speed as well as my arm strength and me as a runner.”

Who’s coaching him up some arm strength? I do feel that Sunseri worked best last year in the hurry up, so this really could be a good fit for him.

Comment by KeyboardKev 04.15.11 @ 8:05 am

Kev – Sunseri has good arm strength on the intermediate routes… it’s his timing that I’m concerned about in this passing game. Too many times he didn’t hit the receivers in stride last season – we rarely got Yards After the Catch (YAC). He seemed to make the receivers stutter step to catch the ball which gave the defenders the chance to close on them.

His deep ball is another story. It was surprisingly deficient last year and, truth be told, I though Bill Stull had a better arm for the deep pass in 2009 than Sunseri did in 2010. However, I re-watched some of the games not to long ago on DVR and I noticed that on the deep fly patterns Sunseri looked like he held the ball too long when Baldwin was going deep down the sidelines – in effect making it so that what might have been an accurate pass if he had released a second earlier be under thrown.

That is something that could be worked on from one year to the next. Some of that may have been the lack of chemistry between Baldwin and Sunseri or just inexperience on Sunseri’s part. It will be interesting to see what happens with this on Saturday.

IT’S A MIRACLE! A COACH WHO WON’T PLAY IT SAFE!

Comment by Greg 04.15.11 @ 9:03 am

I will accept contrary because its not MEAN , after a week to digest the practice I fear we are very slow nationally but ok conference wise and thats the big worry.

Comment by paul shannon 04.15.11 @ 9:11 am

Paul, I really wasn’t trying to be mean with that comment, but I think it’s a bit of a fallacy to think he improved a lot over the course of the year.

It’s pretty apparent that we don’t have the type of speed that Graham envisions for his finished product of the offense… he’ll recruit that. I do think that we have some speed on offense though – Ray Graham is quick, Saddler is like lightning from the LOS, Street can run, etc. Shanahan, while not being the speed demon that Graham wants on offense isn’t a slow lumbering WR either – he can move downfield. Desmond Brown runs a 4.48 so he is pretty fast also.

I’m not so sure of the back up WRs though, Salath Williams will see some PT and he’s quick. But Graham did recruit some WRs & RBs who run in the low 4.40s – Corey Davis at RB is one and Darius Patton and Ronald Jones at WRs are two others. I think we’ll see some of these true freshman get some playing time this year – especially at RB.

“PITT needs to fix this. Facebook is only to be used for arranging clandestine love affairs with old high school girlfriends.”

That is FUNNY (and sad)!

How is Myers thumb is he still hurt.

Comment by FRANKCAN 04.15.11 @ 11:31 am

Seen every Pitt QB since Freddie Mazurek & Ken Lucas. Sunseri may show some qualities in practice, he’s no gamer. Doesn’t have the skill set or the psychology. Pitt not having a great starting QB is as absurd as NYU shutting down it’s basketball program in early 70’s in part because they couldn’t draw local talent. Sunseri’s play is somewhere between OK and terrible.

Comment by Old School Panther 04.15.11 @ 12:45 pm

Like the post on ESPN – NCAA FB – about the intensity rising in the Backyard Brawl. Holgorsen does not like Graham…making good press and will make football interesting.

This may be a year of transistion for TG – especially at QB.

“[Pat Bostick] clearly knows what he’s talking about and presents himself very well. Stay tuned for some more Bostick news as the season gets closer – he’s been impressing the PGH media people left and right.”

Bostick has also impressed this reader of this blog. I am probably most impressed with his writing skills. With the possible exception of a younger Chas, I know few students who are able to write as well as he does at his age. It is refreshing to read a sentence from a student-athlete that does not start: “Me and my teammates…”

Comment by BigGuy 04.15.11 @ 1:22 pm

Let’s have a poll:

Question No. 1: To what college will Mark Myers transfer?

Question No. 2: After what game in October will this blog be lit up with comments like the following:
“Todd Graham is an idiot and should be fired! We had a lead and the ball with 4-minutes to play. Instead of running the clock out with Ray Graham, the idiot tells the QB to pass. The pass is intercepted for a TD and we lose the game!”

Comment by BigGuy 04.15.11 @ 1:35 pm

Did not say it was you,Sunseri a bigger person than some think,he has to now put up.But at the last practice did any one take note on the way the routes and the snaps came down.Reed I understand the times, but what I saw, everybody is really fast or everybody is average it was just hard to judge. My QB posts no longer needed decsion done.

Comment by paul shannon 04.15.11 @ 2:11 pm

Sunseri as starter = 6-6 and a trip to the Joes Plumbing Supply Bowl

We were 8-4 with Baldwin, Lewis, Hynoski, and Pinkston… so 6-6 or even 6-5 is not that far of a stretch. Its going to be another long and painful year.

Comment by Coach Ditka 04.15.11 @ 2:27 pm

Big Guy:

1.) Akron

2.) Connecticut October 26

Comment by Coach Ditka 04.15.11 @ 2:32 pm

Big Guy Mark Myers Penn State if he sits a year or Delaware if he want to play next year.

Comment by FRANKCAN 04.15.11 @ 2:37 pm

Coach Ditka 6 and 6 is a no no it better be 9 or 10 wins no slack given.

Comment by FRANKCAN 04.15.11 @ 2:51 pm

Coach Ditka. I have a dilemma. If you are correct, I want to buy you a couple of beers at the Homecoming Game; however, Homecoming may be 10/15/11. I won’t be around for the 10/26 UConn game, (It’s a Wednesday night game.) So if you win, just charge the beer to my account.

Comment by BigGuy 04.15.11 @ 3:07 pm

Joseph Conrad … the last line made it too easy. I have read somewhere that “Apocalypse Now” has it’s roots in “Heart of Darkness”. There are many parallels between the two.

It may be a long and painful year but at least it will be a new type of pain. I’m done with beating my head against the wall wondering wtf the stache was thinking.

Comment by Jeff in CPa 04.15.11 @ 3:54 pm

Joseph Conrad it is; only one more ‘Author’ post to go – I’ll have to make it a hard one.

Jeff – Your sentiment about a ‘new type of pain’ may just fit this year. But I’m not as pessimistic as some others. We’ll see and we’ll probably all have stronger opinions on the eve of summer camp closing.

Good point about Baldwin, Lewis, Hynoski, and Pinkston… however I do think no one is irreplaceable; Baldwin can certainly be replaced and bettered IMO, Pinkston was good but Nix and Jacobson may be just as good, Lewis – Graham may be a push and Hynoski doesn’t factor in this offense anyway.

We have more than enough talent, the key will be maximizing it which I think was a weak point under Wannstedt.

Comment by Reed 04.15.11 @ 4:46 pm

I don’t know; I have a strange, positive feel about the upcoming season. I don’t know to what extent the kids have “accepted the programming” but I do know that coaches and the energy they can impart can have a profound effect on the outcome of games. I’m not delusional; the talent is what it is, and the deficiencies are pretty clear, but I just have this strange feeling in the pit of my stomach that tells me Pitt will surprise some teams this year.

And I echo Jeff’s sentiments: losing games will still suck, but I hope that the head scratching, heart wrenching, mind boggling, “WTF was he thinking???” days are behind us.

As to the poll:

1) Who cares? I don’t think Graham played any favorites up to this point. If Sunseri’s the strongest guy, Myers can walk if he wants.

2) At least it might not be multiple games, all season long. We’ve all had enough of that. I gave the ‘stache’ five years before I turned on him, and I hated the hire from day one. I’m willing to give Graham at least 2-3 years as long as things aren’t apocalyptic.

Comment by thestumper 04.15.11 @ 6:13 pm

The thing about last year was Sunseri was pretty much protected to an extent last year by Cigs & Wanny’s generally conservative offense. He wasn’t asked to do much (and he didn’t) except continually underthrow or overthrow Baldwin & others and miss out on sure TD’s

Now we came to Graham’s supposed High Octane offense, where the QB position is key. Wanny just wanted a QB to manage the game, Graham/McGee asks the QB to manage the game and make plays and win the game (see the Tulsa QB & the Michigan QB last year). I have a hard time seeing Sunseri as those type of QB’s after watching him play. We could see lots more interceptions this year, as he won’t be protected in a conservative offense this year. Maybe Myers will be playing by mid-Oct. since losing him to transfer shouldn’t be an option, we’re not exactly brimming with D1 QB’s. Amazing considering Western Pa is the land of the QB.

Comment by melvinbennett 04.15.11 @ 9:04 pm

Stumper, I was a DW fan for the same length of time as you because I thought he did all the right things off the field – and tried his best on the field. After 2009 though it became clear to me that he just wasn’t equipped to be a college head coach. It was the same old, same old during the season too many times.

Graham’s energy is nice to see. But I think we’ve also seen a bit of the bottom line with him. That is the teaching aspect of this new offense and the effort and energy it takes to implement it.

I don’t think he’s sugar coating the progress the offense is making, it’s coming along with roadbumps – but that may be lost in the overall ‘high energy’ message he’s pushing.

To give him credit though, he’s taking over a football program that had more rot than the fans knew about and the lethargy had to be arrested and quickly. If transfers happen after this spring practice ends so be it – and I think we’ll see a couple.

PITT fans look at only the won loss record sometimes and in all honesty that doesn’t tell the whole story of 2010. But Graham’s job is to get the program on track and moving forward. That is why PITT opened up the checkbook to the tune of twice as much as the previous coach made… not just for one or two more wins a year but to change the culture of the program itself.

Comment by Reed 04.15.11 @ 9:13 pm

Watch who is recruited at QB after the spring game.Has anybody heard much about Gruder ,maybe the news is just sloooow getting here. Also qb chances of making it through season slim [coach],hope Im wrong.
