LiveBlog: Pitt-USF

Stuck working all afternoon, and no where near a computer. This is why I was really ticked about the SI.com story. It meant no chance to do any basketball stuff before the game.

So, I have to set this up now, and set it to go out a little later.

This is one of the can’t lose games. USF is really bad. Pitt, though, didn’t give a good effort last time. They had about 15 minutes and that was enough. They need to do more this time.

As usual moderated chat. Redundancy, over-the-top hyperbole/reactions  and idiocy are good ways to not get comments through.

If you need to break it out from the site, Click Here. Otherwise, it’s right below.

I have a hard time believing Pitt will be flat tonight-it could be a 20+ point blowout if Gibbs hits his threes. I’ll look for USF to play its bench, to give its starters some rest for the BE Tourney! 😉

believe it…

Comment by thestumper 03.02.11 @ 9:58 pm

another crappy half. I am afraid that this team peaked too early and a slide is on. Let’s face it you are not that good if you only score in the 20s for the first half. Minimizing posessions does not do well when you are playing inferior teams, it just lets them stay in games. Hope second half is better.

Comment by jp 03.02.11 @ 10:12 pm

Ashton kncoking them down…and we’re penetrating the lane…much more aggressive in this half…rebounding and boxing out at high level now.

Hail to PITT!

what Gary M. is bringing to the floor every night speaks well of not only the Pitt coaches and program…but of Gary as well…

Comment by Jim 03.02.11 @ 10:42 pm

Yes, great second half. Can’t do the flat one half, turn it on the second in the B.E. tourney or NCAA’s. Don’t know, they always play hard, seem to have a second gear. Jamie needs to get them to go to that gear the whole game. How does he do that, I have no idea, just a fan.

Do this against a better team, down, 3,5,9 at half, someone, is going to come out in the second half, and ADD to their lead, and suddenly we’ll be down 15 with 13 minutes to play.

Love Pitt hoops, wouldn’t trade Jamie or the last 10 years for anything, but, better start getting em’ fired up, from the get go!

Comment by Dan 03.02.11 @ 10:57 pm

Somebody must have been on the first half over/under, game line. Cause they were a completely different team the 2nd half. A top 5 team should blow out a conf. bottom feeder.

Comment by melvinbennett 03.02.11 @ 11:02 pm

Great 2nd half….but when’s the last time the team played a solid 40? Or even 30??

Comment by Schoey 03.02.11 @ 11:21 pm

Agree Schoey, they have a disturbing trend going the last 6 or 7 games, they stink in the 1rst half.

That won’t work in Round 2 and deeper of the Big Dance. Maybe they’re scouting needs fine tuned and/or JD needs to start screaming at them pre-game. Or Brandin, something, anything.

Comment by melvinbennett 03.03.11 @ 12:01 am

Great article! hfoiwdem

Comment by Sherice Siddiqui 03.03.11 @ 1:17 am

Just got back from the game. Really lackluster first half. Not sure what Dixon said at halftime, but Pitt [cliche] imposed it’s will [/cliche] on USF in the second half.
So happy to see Pitt push the pace after struggling early with offense. Can’t wait to get Gibbs his first shot until 10 minutes have passed by.
Interior defense picked up in the second half. Really impressed with Richardson. Getting better every game and he has a mid-range game that adds another facet to the Pitt offense.
On the downside, I can’t help but think Dante is hurting. Stuffed at the rim by a guard and moving gingerly all over the court. With Zanna out, this means that Richardson and Nas will have to step it up because Taylor’s play and/or health are regressing.
Finally, solid showing by Pitt fans. Probably equal to, or possibly more than the number of USF fans in attendance.
Hail to Pitt! Let’s beat Nova on Saturday and close the book on this thing.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 03.03.11 @ 1:19 am

Hard to figure how a team can look so bad in the first half and outstanding in the second. Maybe they wear teams out. One difference was Nas was awful in the first, Turnover missed layups etc. Got a few easy ones in transition and lookout. Much more fluidity in the second half, taking the ball inside and getting open shots from Gibbs. Good Pitt bad Pitt, hard to figure out.

Comment by gc 03.03.11 @ 7:08 am

Looks like Barry Rohrssen is out at Manhattan. It will be very interesting who makes a run at him for a top recruiter/asst coach position. I wouldn’t be surprised if Rutgers or…dare I say, should Ed DeChellis survive for yet another year, Penn State try to lure him to their programs.

He was really hamstrung by injuries, but his kids graduate and he is still pulling some decent talent.

Pitt is at least co-Big East Champions. Given that Saturday is Senior Day, Pitt’s seniors can go out with a (stand alone) Big East Championship, something they can brag about forever. Let’s Go Pitt!

Comment by MariettaMike 03.03.11 @ 7:46 am

Pitt should beat a reeling Nova team at home Saturday. Wright’s team just hasn’t come anywhere near meeting expectations.

Weird year in college hoops. You just don’t look at any squads and think “Yes, automatic one seed.” I guess OSU, Kansas and Duke are the closest there are to that designation, but those teams just aren’t as good as the elite teams of past years. Look at Kansas, for example. Last year’s KU team had a stud PG in Collins, an NBA big man in Aldrich and freak freshman in Xavier Henry plus everybody they have back (the Morrises, Taylor) this year (except Selby, whose impact has been up and down). This year’s KU team doesn’t even belong on the same court as that squad, even though that squad was a historic underachiever. Wonder how it would feel for Self to win a NC with this team when it must feel a lot different in practice every day.

All about timing, which is what I’ve been saying about Pitt in the Big East this year.

There is a lot of “decent” in the Big East this year. Tournament-caliber teams, but not teams that jump out at you with NBA-quality players. When a guy like Dwight Hardy is in the running for POY, you know there’s a quality problem. Hardy will be lucky to make the NBA DL. This from a league that’s given us POYs like Allen,Hamilton, Butler, Murphy, Okafor, Foye, Blair etc. etc.

Certainly a league where you rarely get a night off and won’t get any if DePaul and USF get their program going, but still not a league that dazzled at all this year. We were missing the stars. Brooks and Hansbrough were tough, but not like past years’ standouts.

Give Dixon credit for always managing to be pretty good, even when everybody else is just decent.

Comment by hugh green 03.03.11 @ 8:57 am

They don’t give #1 seed to co-champions…let’s knock Villanova off the bubble with a statement win, and win the BE outright!

Comment by Lou 03.03.11 @ 8:59 am

I wouldn’t overlook nova… they are desperate for a win…

Comment by Snala The Panther 03.03.11 @ 9:07 am

Nova has a punchers chance on Saturday. If they get hot from the outside. If Pitt plays like they did in the, things could snowball. You don’t want to let a team that is talented, but struggling, think they have a chance.

That said, I would expect Pitt to be a 7 or 8 point favorite.

Agree with hugh, NCAA is down this year, with 15-20 really good teams, but no great ones, should make for a great tournament. In Lunardi’s bracket, Pitt is a #1 seed, Louisville #4, ND #2, St. John’s #4. On the court right now, how much better is Pitt than those teams? A tiny little bit better, maybe.

The 2009 Pitt team would be a prohibitive favorite this year.

Comment by boubacar aw 03.03.11 @ 9:39 am

Sorry….hit send too quick. Meant to say:

“if Pitt plays like they did in the first half last night, ..”

Comment by boubacar aw 03.03.11 @ 9:41 am

As you say, it is an interesting year. In most seasons, there is separation somewhere in the top 4 seed lines, which results in a distinct advantage to being a #1 (or #2, as the case may be) seed. This year there just doesn’t seem to be much separation among the top 4 seed lines. The biggest advantage to getting the #1 seed will probably be in the second round, but even there, it won’t be a guaranteed win. It should make for an entertaining tournament.

Comment by Pantherman13 03.03.11 @ 9:46 am

That’s why I don’t think getting a one seed should be that important. What is important is getting healthy, playing good basketball and getting a good draw. Then roll the dice!

Comment by boubacar aw 03.03.11 @ 9:54 am

BYU recruiting took a hit today, huh? Isn’t that why you play major college hoops, to get chicks? just sayin’

Comment by boubacar aw 03.03.11 @ 10:03 am

The biggest bucket of the game was Nassir’s buzzer beater at the end of the first half. Before that, he was missing bunnies and not even boxing out. His continuing frustration from the Louisville game was ruining his whole game. But during the second half he played so well that he ended up with a double-double.

Comment by Howard 03.03.11 @ 10:17 am

Nas air-balled (over the backboard) a reverse layup.

Does KenPom keep a stat, “foot on the three point line shots made”? If so I bet Gil Brown is leading the country. For a 23 year old fifth year senior, he makes a lot of dumb/careless mistakes…..

Comment by boubacar aw 03.03.11 @ 10:25 am

Boubacar – Gil’s feet are just to damn big!

Nas’ reverse-layup-airball was one of those moments that you just shake your head. In the first half, he did seem to be pressing and trying to do things that he just isn’t capable of doing.

McGhee had a terrible first half, but rebounded (pun intended) nicely in the second half. Most of his game is effort, and in the first half it just wasn’t there. He came to play in the second half.

I’ve always thought that the criticism of Dante Taylor has been a bit unfair, but something just isn’t right with him at this point. I suspect it may be the bum knee, but last night he was laboring to get up and down the court, and really struggled to finish around the hoop.

Another guy who is struggling is Woodall, but frankly, I’m most concerned with his defense (or lack thereof). He has been picking up a lot of fouls, many of which seem to be due to not moving his feet on defense and instead reaching with his hands. For a guy as quick as Woodall, he should be a better one-on-one defender. I don’t think the issue is confidence, so I wonder if it is concentration. They need more than 13 minutes a game from him.

As stated above, hopefully they can get healthy for the stretch run. That may be the biggest factor in how far they go.

Comment by Pantherman13 03.03.11 @ 11:29 am

I guess 20 mins will do!

Comment by Tony Cancilla 03.03.11 @ 11:59 am

Sat directly behind the Pitt bench last night and made a couple of obervations related to Pantherman13’s comments on Taylor and Woodall.

On Taylor: The knees may be bothering him, but he really needs to get his head in the game. You can tell he really loves being one of the guys, but his attention seems to wander. During one timeout when he wasn’t in the lineup, he was checking out the USF dancers while Jamie was going over adjustments. On the 2nd half in-bounds dunk by Gilchrist – 2 of the 4 scored by USF during Pitt’s two runs – he made the wrong switch and left Nas hanging. Nas was so pissed, Jamie had to take him out of the game. You could hear him screaming “Dante missed the switch!” as he came to the bench. Good thing Pitt was well ahead or I think Nas would have killed him. It just shows that level of immaturity that was a knock on Taylor coming out of HS. Hopefully, he grows up soon, because you can see the kid has a lot of talent, and he loves playing.

On Woodall: It seemed like he was in a bit of a funk last night. Not sure what it is about, but you may recall he slumped after he started and then was relegated to the bench last year. On the other hand, USF is pretty long inside and he forced a couple of tough shots trying to get over top of the defenders. The fact that he couldn’t get anything to drop may have frustrated him, which can affect the overall play. It shouldn’t but it happens.

You could see the guys had a different mindset coming out of the locker room in the 2nd half. I told the USF fan sitting in front of me that Jamie must have reminded them which team was #4 in the country. They clearly play better when they force the tempo a bit and get runouts off of the defensive end.

Maybe it’s just the grind of the BE season and them trying to save energy for the tourney runs, but they seem all too willing to let the action come to them in the first half. Like most, I’d rather see the up-tempo play early rather than late, because the Tennessee game showed how that can backfire. Hoping they remember that lesson as we head into the games that really count.

Comment by TampaT 03.03.11 @ 12:04 pm

Agree that this is dangerous Jekyll Hyde pattern, 2nd half v WV 41-27 2nd half last night 42-23. Wasn’t for Brown in the 1st half we may have been in too deep a hole to climb out. Unless corrected this will get us bounced in early rounds of both. JD mentioned in post game injuries, believe its affecting Taylor but don’t know what Woodall’s excuse is. Recently he’s more of a liabilty than an asset. Puts more pressure on Brad & Gibbs but if JJ & Lamar can hit mid range & 3’s we’re better off minimizing Woodall’s time. Let’s beat V first but Dixon commented on how brutal the BET will be, don’t know that we’ve ever seen a field this tough and with tough matchups. Not unreasonable to think that there will be at least two BE teams in 8’s and one in final four. Let’s send Jay Wright home with a loss and bubble anxiety.

Comment by Old School Panther 03.03.11 @ 12:05 pm

Sorry, but I forgot to mention above that pre-game, while Jamie was covering things with the starters, Brandin Knight stood right beside Woodall and talked in his ear the entire time. Would love to have been close enough to hear what he was saying, because Knight’s stare was so intense, he could have bore a hole in Woodall. Woodall kept shaking his head in agreement, so I’m assuming it was something he needed to hear.

Comment by TampaT 03.03.11 @ 12:33 pm

Tampa – thanks for sharing your in-person observations. Nothing quite like being there.

I remember the play you describe with Taylor and Nas. Nas first confronted Taylor on the floor, then left the game (I think he might have picked up a foul on the play also). If it is an issue with focus with both him and Woodall, it really underscores the importance of having upperclassmen on your team. It also doesn’t help that Richardson also seems to struggle with defensive positioning.

I was talking to a buddy the other day and I mentioned that this is the time of the season when all of the Big East teams (not just Pitt) really seem to be looking forward to playing teams from outside of the conference. The games are just wars, and everyone is so familiar with each other that the element of surprise is pretty much gone. I swear, you can almost feel them counting down the games. I have to think that this grind is part of the reason the best teams seem to swoon a bit at the end of the regular season.

Comment by Pantherman13 03.03.11 @ 1:03 pm

A game ago i stated this team is playing jekyl and hyde halves and it continued….but as a whole the team played very well second half of game. this team could be unstoppable if they get it together. Also i am agreeing with some other comments, this team may just be hoping to get out of the league and play a ncaa tournament game…that is their goal, make the tourney and have a run to and thru the final four. I think they realize that and maybe are losing some focus for these late league games…not necessarily motivated by the #1 seed. people closer to the team may know the answers, i am going by the eye test.

Comment by drgags 03.03.11 @ 1:20 pm

Taylor also manages to whine more about foul calls than anyone else on the squad, and he’s not even on the floor that much.

Hope they can get knees healthy and his head focused — not for this year, but for next year and the year after. Remember when folks on this site were wondering if Pitt would be lucky to keep him more than one year? Now we’re just hoping he can become a solid starter in this league.

Woodall, Taylor, Patterson, Moore (and Zanna, if he returns). All year we got excited about what a deep team this is and now my concern is how much you can play these guys without too much drop off. It feels more and more like Pitt’s post-season showing will be almost completely determined by how the 5 starters play.

Comment by hugh green 03.03.11 @ 1:23 pm

Duke won the title last year. I would not consider last year’s Duke team extremely high quality compared to the Fab 5 or UNLV in the early nineties. I wouldn’t consider the last few title teams even close to the quality of the 2004 UCONN championship team. This quality argument is being embellished.

All sports are cyclical. The 2009 UNC team had a bunch of NBA draft picks, but sans Ty Lawson, they all suck. Same with the 2006 UNC title team. The only good pro on that team is Ray Felton.

Comment by Omar 03.03.11 @ 1:28 pm

I felt like Woodall’s problem on D last night was that he was not committed to the hedge, or, rather, he was not confident that the big man was going to do an adequate job on the hedge. Personally, I hate that freakin’ hedge and feel it does more harm than good, e.g., the ND game.

Taylor has got to stop the whining after every MFing time he gets called for a foul. Drive me insane.

Too bad Gil picked up that second foul, because I was loving what I was seeing: a turnaround, a spin move in the lane… Clearly these are things he could do on a regular basis, if he would just commit to it. When it comes to Gil, don’t give a darn about long 2s. As long as he is confidently taking shots, that’s more important in his case.

As others have said, I do think this team plays better when the game is up-tempo. They get into a better offensive rhythm, the rebounding is better, the defense seems more aggressive. Hopefully this is something we’ll see more of, particularly come March 17.

Comment by Carmen 03.03.11 @ 1:39 pm

Although Taylor seems to get some strange calls go against him and doesn’t seem to get much slack from the officials (gotta earn it I guess), I agree that it would be better to see him complain less. It is never going to change the call, and it does seem to distract him for a short time. Although it is yet another skill that takes time and maturity to develop, it is better to just move on. Let the fans complain about the calls.

Taylor was almost splitting time with McGhee earlier in the season, and for the most part, he was doing well. Not much in the way of points, but he was grabbing rebounds and blocking a few shots, and generally playing with more energy. I’m just not seeing it as much the past couple weeks. I really hope he can get better quickly. Of all of the bench players that Hugh lists above, he and Woodall are the two most important this year. Perhaps we should even add Richardson now, as I think the offense is much less effective when Brown has to play the 4 to spell Nas.

Comment by Pantherman13 03.03.11 @ 1:45 pm

Nothing like first hand observations, thank you Tampa T. Re your point: Taylor and Knight are polar opposites, Taylor lately seems so distant from the game when he’s sitting and that blocked dunk attempt was embarrassing. He’s also not running the floor as well as he did in Dec, has to be his knee.

Comment by Old School Panther 03.03.11 @ 2:10 pm

I think Richardson is going to have to step it up – is he ready, I don’t know. With Taylor struggling and possibly injured and Zanna out, JJ is our backup at the 4 & 5. We seem to lose a lot on offensive boards with Brown playing the 4.

Comment by virgil 03.03.11 @ 2:55 pm

Luke Winn has his latest (and last) power rankings up over at SI’s website. He has Pitt at #3, FWIW. As always, he has a couple of interesting tidbits.

First, Zanna and Taylor are #1 and #2 on Pitt for offensive rebounding percentage. I knew they were good, but I didn’t realize how important they are to Pitt’s offensive rebounding.

Second, he specifically mentions Taylor’s injuries as keeping him at “less than full strength”.

Third, he restated that Zanna will be out 3-6 weeks. I had kind of assumed that Zanna was done for the season, but I guess it is possible that he will be back for the NCAAs. I’m not sure how much he would offer at that point, but it is interesting to ponder.

Virgil – I agree that we lose a lot with Brown playing the 4. It’s not just on the offensive boards, but the whole flow of the offense is different. Brown is just not as physical a presence as either Nas, Zanna or even Richardson.

Comment by Pantherman13 03.03.11 @ 4:07 pm

Have to agree with hugh that you’ll see the starters together a lot more come NCAA tourney time. The team seems to be more in rhythm on both ends with those five guys.

I think you’ll still see Woodall spelling Gibbs and Wanny, Taylor spelling McGhee, Patterson spelling Brown, and Richardson (or maybe Zanna) spelling Nas, but you won’t see more than two of them in the lineup together for any length of time – unless we’re up big of course.

Comment by TampaT 03.03.11 @ 4:17 pm

Every team plays their starters more and shortens the bench for important games. It’s conventional wisdom.

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 03.03.11 @ 4:25 pm

I don’t necessarily think Jamie will shorten the bench, SilverPanther. 9 or even 10 guys will still see some action. I just don’t think he’ll have as many bench players in at the same time. There have been numerous times, even in important BE games, that he’s had 4 bench players and 1 starter in there. I think it will be just the opposite most of the time during the tourney.

Comment by TampaT 03.03.11 @ 4:54 pm

It seems like it’s been at least a week and a half since Zanna’s announced injury….anyone hearing anything about his progress? Is there hope to have him back for the NCAAs?

Comment by Lou 03.04.11 @ 7:52 am

The “conventional wisdom” was that Pitt’s bench was very deep and strong and would be a difference-maker this year, especially in important games. Now, because of injuries (Zanna, possibly Taylor), erratic performance (Patterson, Woodall), and Dixon’s evident decision that Moore isn’t ready yet, you’ve got a much less deep team and it seems illogical to cite depth as one of Pitt’s strengths this year headed into the tournaments.

Comment by hugh green 03.04.11 @ 10:30 am

They are about to win the Big East conference title and gain a #1 seed in the NCAAs with 4 bench players averaging over 10 minutes a game, because of or in spite of “erratic performance”. Injuries are just part of the game. But the deep bench has affirmed conventional wisdom up until this point.

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 03.04.11 @ 10:40 am

Lou – it’s hard to believe, but it has only been a week since Zanna was injured. I haven’t seen anything reported on his progress, and I’m guessing that is because it is too soon. At some point, they will probably do another x-ray to see what progress has been made, but I’m guessing they will wait until at least 2 weeks out from the injury. But what do I know…I’m a lawyer not a doctor. Any doctors on the board?

Comment by Pantherman13 03.04.11 @ 12:37 pm

To simply write off Woodall as erratic is really selling him short. His past two games weren’t his best, but against WVU he had 6 assists to 1 turnover. He also started and won games on the road when Gibbs was out including playing 36 minutes at WVU. How many other teams in the nation can lose their starting PG have the backup step in and win on the road against two NCAA tournament teams? I’d imagine almost every team in the nation would love to have the “erratic” Woodall as their back up PG.
