LiveBlog: GameDay Pitt-Villanova

This is what we’ve been waiting all week, and all day to see. Some unexpected extra hate towards Villanova with some naivete, foolishness and plain stupidity over where Pitt alum in Philly should watch the game.

Nova has put the game in the Pavilion. No doubt, it will be repeated ad nauseum that Pitt is winless there in the last six visits dating back to 1993. I guess it’s worth noting that before that, Pitt was 4-3 there.

Ashton Gibbs is still out for the game, at last check. Corey Stokes for Villanova is also reportedly out, as his turf toe has not gotten any better.

As usual, this will be a moderated chat. Probably a very good thing as emotions might be a little high. What with the aforementioned assholery of some Nova folk and the increased tension that comes with waiting all day for this game. (Not to mention drinking a few or a dozen adult beverages while watching basketball all day.)

halftime analysis: Gil and Travon need to pick it up or forget about it

How can Nova afford to move up to D1 football when they can’t even afford mops for the ballboys to wipe the floor?

Comment by wbb 02.12.11 @ 10:41 pm

Gilbert Brown should fake an injury and take a seat. He couldn’t have been worse in this game if he tried.

Comment by Jeff 02.12.11 @ 11:08 pm

face it .. as great as the Pete and the Zoo are, there is nothing better than beating a BE team on the road in front of a hostile crowd .. and we been treated to back to back examples

thought Pitt won despite Gilbert

Comment by wbb 02.12.11 @ 11:24 pm

Gil didn’t have a great game on the offensive end, but he was crucial on the defensive end. Nasir is so tough and he really is the glue guy on this team. Brad and Ashton are the stars but we don’t win either of these games if Nas isn’t playing the 4. This is such a tough team…gonna be able to make a big run in both tourneys but we all know it’s about who comes to play any day….

Karma is a bitch. Hope Nova blog’s whining was worth the first loss at the pavilion in 46 games. Hail to Pitt!

Great Great win. Gilbert had a rough night and made it much closer than it should have been down the stretch. Wanamaker is truly a stud and stepped up big time tonight. Will be number three, should be number two. Good finish by Woodall except for that last free throw.
Lots of sad faces on the Main Line tonight.

Pitt played OUTSTANDING DEFENCE! It ended up a lot closer than it should have. Certainly a lot closer than I would liked. BUT,…. I’ll take win on the road against a top 10 team any time. All this WITHOUT Ashton Gibbs. Not bad at all.

Comment by Justinian 02.12.11 @ 11:35 pm

Should be a rowdy post game crowd at Kelly’s tonight. HA!

Comment by dock71 02.12.11 @ 11:38 pm

dock71, Pitt fans are on the 4th floor and are tossing down ICs, not Yeunglings.

Did anyone else hear the “Let’s go Pitt” cheer?

Great, tough win. My first star, Nasir.

Comment by steve 02.12.11 @ 11:43 pm

This was a great win but it should have been much easier. Brown had three terrible turnovers in a row after Pitt was up by 10 and him taking an ill advised long 3 point shot. And it all sort of happened when ESPN had to show the NCAA game when Brown just stood there and let Reynolds put up the game winning shot over him. Bad karma I guess.

Listing the bad plays; Pitt up by 10 points.
1) Instead of burning some more clock , he heaves up a long 3 pointer, no rime nor reason.
2) Still up by 10, he throws a terrible cross court pass over Nas’s head, after getting himself double teams on the sideline.
3) Pitt up by 8, he gets called for an over an back at halfcourt (again he got stuck on the same sideline)
4) Pitt up by six, he steps on the out of bounds line denying Pitt a opportunity to burn more clock and perhaps score more points.

That was almost a one man wrecking crew. Offensively he didn’t have it, Dixon should have done the offense/defense thing with him. He almost cost us the game and our 2 game lead in the BigEast.

That being said, Wannamaker was huge, I hope that ends the last of the negative Wanny comments. As we’ve been saying all season long, he’s our best player. Even dipshit Bilas agrees. I hope our Pitt alum in Philly enjoyed this after all the crap those Nova d-bags did this week with the pre-game party. Post game party at Kelly’s, wouldn’t that be great. We should move up to #1 this week but I know we won’t. Nobody else this week in the Top 4 beat a Top 10 team. WE DID !

Hail to Pitt !

I was more disturbed at how many open shots Gilbert bricked tonight

Comment by wbb 02.12.11 @ 11:49 pm

mel, Brown inevitably an offensive head case but he played great D.

Comment by steve 02.12.11 @ 11:50 pm

Solid Win. Solid Coaching. Good to see the Philly area guys step up. Also great to see the Nova Pavilion get so quiet.

I live within minutes of Kelly’s and have only been there twice. For sure, will never go again.

Hail to Pitt!

Being 11-1 in the best conference in the NCAA should warrant us being ranked #1. We have beaten Texas as well who beat Kansas.

Rest assured if Uconn or Cusey or even Georgetown were 11-1 in the BigEast and 23-2 overall and were ranked in the Top 5 of the RPI and the circumstances were the same as now, THEY WOULD BE RANKED #1. No question in my mind.

@steve ….you are right, but like I posted, perhaps an offense/defense substitution with him might have worked better.

Comment by melvinbennett 02.12.11 @ 11:58 pm

Agreed on Gil, he did play great defense..it’s a shame that we cannot take him out every transistion and offensive play like in football.
I just don’t understand him….I have never seen or coached a player like him. Forget the lazy passes and picking up his dribble right after the half court line setting up the trap….the play that really got me was stepping over the side foul line while dribbling the ball…this isn’t rec ball. Give Jamie credit for having them all shake off bad plays…a very gutsy win.

Comment by Dan 72 02.13.11 @ 12:04 am

Melvinbennet, Please don’t say that! I don’t want us to be ranked NO. 1. I would rather hang around at No.3 or 4 and make a move at tounament time. Everyone plays out of their skulls, when they’re playing against the No. 1 team. Let’s just go into the tournament, a bit underated and under the radar. Go Pitt!

Comment by Justinian 02.13.11 @ 12:11 am

Gil Brown has had some OUTSTANDING games as a Panther. Not a great night tonight agreed but he did sink the two free throws after the intentional Punch and if our guys shoot better from the charity stripe it wouldn’t have been as close as it was.

Comment by Tony In Harrisburg 02.13.11 @ 12:33 am

Was a great game to be at. Glad you could hear the “let’s go Pitt” chant over TV. Looking forward to the plane ride home tomorrow wearing Pitt basketball gear. Hail to Pitt!!

Comment by Joey T 02.13.11 @ 1:44 am

Gil did play good defense…I thought the three (on an out of bounds play) was a good shot, and he had four assists, and though he made the turnovers late in the game, he also helped break the press.

Hail to PITT!
