LiveBlog: Backyard Brawl, Part 1

Ah, some good and proper hate. I’m assuming that Hoopie fans will be themselves and provide plenty of reason to be condescending and insulting in their general direction.

The game starts at 7pm on ESPN. It’s the good crew of Raftery, Bilas and McDonough.

I was trying to think of some more stuff to write by way of introduction, but really. Why? It’s the Backyard Brawl.  We know what it means. I just want to get right into the game.

As usual it’s a moderated chat. The better to keep out trolls and redundant comments. If you need to break it from the site, Click Here. Otherwise just go a little lower.

I’m watching the game right now and I see WV coach Bob Huggins dressed for the occasion. He’s wearing a clean XXXL WV warm-up. I guess he want’s to ready if he has to play. We’re not playing badly but can’t buy a 3 point shot.

Comment by Justinian 02.07.11 @ 7:35 pm

Bradley F Wannamaker

but it was a team win … Woodall, Brown, McGhee, Robinson and Taylor all contributed

Comment by wbb 02.07.11 @ 9:07 pm

What a gutty tough win for our boys. Never been prouder of this team. A little adversity has us very focussed. Take em one at a time…next up Nova!

Comment by Dan 72 02.07.11 @ 9:09 pm

Yes it was. A hard fought tough win on the road. They certainally do miss Ashton Gibbs, but they need to learn how to with without him. This was a nice first step in a hostile enviroment where we only made one three point shot. Good win!

Comment by Justinian 02.07.11 @ 9:14 pm

Great win! What a thug Huggins is. He and the Hoopies truly deserve each other…

Comment by Bobby 02.07.11 @ 9:31 pm

according to both CBS.com and ESPN, Wanny only had 3 assists …. can’t be right

Comment by wbb 02.07.11 @ 9:32 pm

11 From Woodall good team effort nice win.

Comment by FRANKCAN 02.07.11 @ 9:45 pm

This is the kind of game that gets a team prepared for the post season. The Panthers hung tough!
HAIL TO PITT

Comment by isnore 02.07.11 @ 10:00 pm

This was great to help build the confidence of the younger guys. Patterson made two big FTs at the end of the game and Moore was able to play in a big rivalry on the road. This will definitely help them mature into better players on this team.

Comment by Greg 02.07.11 @ 10:01 pm

That was awesome. A split this week was what the team needed to keep going, and that was with Ashton…this was a huge win for the team, and no matter what happens on Saturday this is still the Big East-leading Panthers once they get back to full strength!!

Comment by merlin 02.07.11 @ 10:13 pm

WVU is Wretched Vulgar Uncouth.

Comment by FRANKCAN 02.07.11 @ 10:14 pm

Definitely proud of the way they played. Struggled to get their feet under them in the first half, but strong play in the second half. Woodall, Wanny, and Gil all hitting big shots, being aggressive. It was really nice to see.

Comment by Carmen 02.07.11 @ 10:50 pm

I think Huggins is a good coach, but he is starting to become more arrogant and “thuggish” as one poster stated. But the one guy on that bench that really comes across as an ass (even without saying a word) is the gray haired assistant coach. Looks like he’s straight out of the sopranos. My bet is he and huggybear go way back and he’s their to wipe his ass.

Comment by Z-Boy 02.07.11 @ 10:54 pm

Huggins and the hillbillies do deserve each other. I could hear the student section chanting “eat s*** Pitt” on the radio right before tipoff. Almost as classy as throwing their life savings at our coaches. Huggins looked like a wrestler trying to drop weight in that jacket.

Comment by Yoshi 02.08.11 @ 12:01 am

Solid win, everyone contributed. Good thing Taylor was back. Don’t win without him.

Comment by gc 02.08.11 @ 6:46 am

gc, don’t know if we would’ve lost without him, but Sleepy certainly did play well.

Love the effort and contributions from all. We plumb wore them out.

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by steve 02.08.11 @ 6:58 am

I’m glad I’ve never seen Jamie dress down any Pitt player the way Huggins does. The look on his face and the profanityhe uses really shows how much he cares about them as individuals. I’m certain Jamie yells at guys on occasion, but fortunately he doesn’t feel the need to emasculate them before a crowd of 18,000 like ol’ Huggy does. Just another thing Huggins does that eventually leads to the degradation of any positivity he might bring to the WVU basketball program. Recruits and parents must take note of such obnoxious behavior, don’t you think?

Comment by apostles03 02.08.11 @ 8:04 am

Great win. Glad to see Pitt get out and run for quick baskets, that kept us in the game in the first half. Officiating was really poor. Bad calls for both teams. Seems to me the Turk shuffles his feet and never gets called for it. I thought for sure that Huggins would get a technical. Woodall and Robinson were solid. Seniors stepped it up in the second half and took control.

Maybe someone can answer this question for me. When we are in the closing minutes of the game and shooting two foul shots (other team over the limit or a shooting foul) – why do we have men on the free throw line for the first shot and then take them off for the second one?

Comment by virgil 02.08.11 @ 8:10 am

Regarding foul line, they only do that when ahead and do not want to foul on the rebound, I think they stay up on first to make the shooter more comfortable.
Last night was a great win, guards played smart and stayed out of foul trouble. WVU helped by not pressing.

Comment by Jimbo 02.08.11 @ 8:19 am

Rebounders on the line is normal when shooting FTs–creates normal environment for the FT shooter. Take them off on second shot to have defenders already back to prevent opponent fast break for an easy score off of a missed shot–similar to a prevent defense in football. Will only do this when have the lead. If behind would keep your rebounders there to try for a put back basket on a missed FT.

Comment by pitt1972 02.08.11 @ 8:20 am

I was pleased with the way the Panthers picked up things in the second half on the offensive end of the floor. Everyone played better in the second half and they attacked the basket. They will need to shoot better from outside, if we’re to have a shot of winning at Villanova.

Comment by Justinian 02.08.11 @ 9:06 am

Speaking of dressing down his players, Huggins flat out dismissed them after the game, saying:

“We’re just outmanned. I can’t trade them, I could waive them I guess, but I couldn’t get anybody for them.”

Absolutely classless guy.

Comment by steve 02.08.11 @ 9:13 am

Thanks all for answering my question on the foul line deal.
About Huggins, I know he is a good coach and has the record to prove it. However, I detest the way he treats his players. As a retired coach (granted only on the high school level) I would never berate a player in a public venue. Now in my locker-room, that’s a different story. Dixon rarely says a word to a player after a mental error, just takes them out and the player is smart enough to figure out what he did wrong. That system works and there is no need to embarrass a kid the way Huggy does.

Comment by virgil 02.08.11 @ 9:39 am

For the record– if you counted at home, Travon Woodall hit three jump shots. Aside from that, we did not hit a shot outside of 7 feet and still scored 71 and won. Unreal!

Comment by Joe 02.08.11 @ 10:23 am

Huggins is a good coach, but he has zero class. I was amused when he kept Dixon waiting for the post game hand shake so he could continue berating the officials after the buzzer. If he’s the moral authority pleading for etiquette from the fans it’s no wonder the hoopies act the way they do.

Comment by Ghost of Hornman 02.08.11 @ 10:26 am

As for Huggins, having coached HS Basketball and managed several sales forces, I have seen this angry behavior in coaches and managers many times. Fear is a great motivator, but only in the short term.
See Bobby Knight! You can see by the looks on the Hoopie player’s faces that it has grown old.The absolute worst thing you can do is criticize your players.

WVU and Huggins deserve each other.

Comment by Dan 72 02.08.11 @ 10:28 am

Joe–You might be right, but I’m fairly sure I remember Brad making a jumper or two, and Gil made one from the right corner…I think.

Comment by merlin 02.08.11 @ 10:29 am

I also thought it was a bush league effort from an otherwise normally decent broadcast crew. It sounded like Bilas was reading a 7 year old script on the Pitt program. “They’ll never recruit top talent” (guess he’s never heard of Khem Birch). “They have older players who stay 4-5 years” (actually a pretty good current mix between upper and lower classmen), they’re a blue collar defense minded team (despite being one of the best offensive teams of the Dixon era), “underclassmen don’t play right away (Blair, and of course Birch next year).

They offered such irrelevent perspective they might as well have been big Dickie V.

Comment by Ghost of Hornman 02.08.11 @ 10:35 am

Great win last night ! Watched the game at of all places a Syracuse bar. So therefore there was no sound of the game…. I heard Bilas was in his usual anti-Pitt mode. I’m really getting tired of media bias against Pitt and their favoritism of schools like Uconn(close to Bristol-espn), Syracuse(espn alum), Duke (naturally) and of course Kansas, Texas ($$$) and Ohio State ($$$$)

The only media person I hear who gives Pitt a fair shake is Bobby Knight, go figure. Bobby says what he believes regardless of what company directives are in circulation as to how to shape and mold Pitt’s image during tv broadcasts. Thank God for him, there’s at least one honest person on that sports consortium known as ESPN/ABC. Still can’t believe were ranked BEHIND Texas even though we have a better record, we’re in 1rst place in the toughest conf. in America AND WE’VE BEATEN TEXAS, AS HAS Uconn and yet we’re behind Texas. Makes about as much sense as how the Mexican border is being handled.

Actually maybe it’s better that the sound wasn’t on the bar tv last night, as those clowns usually have nothing good to say about Pitt or it’s some sort of backhanded compliment at the best.

Here’s a great pic of Thuggy Bear, whiskey breath and all, berating one of his unfortunate players.
Enjoy !

There’s no anti-Pitt bias in the media. One of last night’s team, Bill Raftery, is one of Pitt’s biggest fans. And Bilas has said plenty of complimentary things about Pitt and other broadcasters usually do. Bilas called last night’s game a “program win” and affirmed that we are not a one trick pony with Gibbs as our scorer. And Chas is constantly posting links to ESPN, SI, and other media sources with good stuff about Pitt. Let’s not use this space to piss in our pants about the media… or immigration policy here.

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 02.08.11 @ 12:17 pm

Great effort without Gibbs last night. Nova is going to be a tough test for sure.

The great thing about college basketball is that rank doesn’t matter. So it doesn’t matter that Pitt is “only 4.” NCAA seeding is the only thing that matters. And right now Pitt is in line for a 1 seed. Pitt will get to show how good they are in the NCAA tourney in March.

Comment by XBlackMagicX 02.08.11 @ 12:25 pm

One guy who really ‘stepped it up’ last night who I think was overlooked was Nas Robinson who led Pitt with 15 points, had 8 big rebounds and one gigantic hoopie killing exclamation of a slam dunk in the final minute of last nights love fest.

Big G also had a big 13 points on 5 of 6 shooting and 75% from the line with 5 big offensive rebounds.

And Little T, Travon, played under control as we hoped he would yesterday, with ONLY 1 turnover in 36 minutes and 12 rather large points.

Just a great effort, cudos to them & Coach D, cause they would have had an easy excuse if they lost.

HTP !

Comment by melvinbennett 02.08.11 @ 12:27 pm

Surely you jest SilverPanther.

Comment by melvinbennett 02.08.11 @ 12:29 pm

melvin, after watching the tape, right on.

Right place/right time and unflappable, Nasir (without the goatee) is the second coming of Jaron Brown.

Comment by steve 02.08.11 @ 12:42 pm

In two days, you’ve captured the two biggest basketball whines from the last couple of years: That Dixon should adjust his style and that the media is biased toward Pitt. If you post that Dante Taylor should be playing the 4 and Gilbert Brown should get more playing time, you will have run the gauntlet.

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 02.08.11 @ 12:43 pm

I still don’t get Texas being ranked ahead of us. If they steal our No. 1 seed, I’ll bring out my guns.

Comment by TX Panther 02.08.11 @ 12:44 pm

Kansas is 2nd ranked, only loss to 3rd ranked Texas who was beaten by 4th ranked Pitt … oh what does it all mean?

I don’t believe Bilas is anti-Pitt at all, and think all 3 announcers admire Pitt and J Dixon.

Comment by wbb 02.08.11 @ 12:56 pm

So, Silver, you see no style difference between the last 3 games and the ND game?

I sure do. Much more attuned to getting it into the paint. Much more likely to push it down court after a rebound. And much more aggressive defensively.

The ND game was a wakeup call for Jamie. This team will not be passive again this season.

And he will get many more than 20 minutes from his bench.

Comment by steve 02.08.11 @ 12:57 pm

BTW, Sleepy is coming right along and will replace McGhee just fine next year (as per recent Pitt tradition,) And for that matter, Zanna will be more than ready for prime time in 2 years as will be Patterson and Moore … and dare I say that Gilbert will be ready to replace Taylor in 3 years!!

Comment by wbb 02.08.11 @ 1:01 pm

Good win and I really appreciated the fact that there was very little forcing of shots to compensate for Gibbs not being out there. Wanamaker forced a couple, but at least they were on drives to the hoop and Gilbert Brown continued to amaze me with his discretion. (He missed one fadeaway early and then showed good judgement from there on out, which is completely unlike the way he played in past seasons and the way he plays in summer league…..)

I will complain about one thing, though (wouldn’t be me if I didn’t).

What is up with all the whining and complaining on this squad after being called for a foul? The antics of Taylor and Moore are embarrassing (and it’s not just them) and Dixon needs to shut it down. I don’t know whether Taylor bumped the ref on purpose last night, but even if he didn’t, he came off looking like an idiotic baby.

Wanamaker and McGhee seem to do a nice job of skipping the histrionics on every call against them and it’s time Dixon held them up to their teammates as examples.

I just don’t want to see a technical on a player cost Pitt in a close game late in the season.

Comment by hugh green 02.08.11 @ 1:03 pm

42 points in the paint and 18 free throws….leaves us five field goals (one was a three) outside the paint. HUGE rebounding edge. That is just beautiful….Huggy is correct when he said they got out “manned”. Nice to go to down there and win like that!

Comment by FG 02.08.11 @ 1:12 pm

Would it be wrong for a 35 year old man, married with two kids to wear a Nasir Robinson jersey???? Don’t worry, I think I know the answer to that…

Comment by WC Steve 02.08.11 @ 1:16 pm

What really chafed me on the coverage was Bilas beating a dead horse that Pitt is unable to recruit top talent (not ambivalent, but unable). I don’t think that’s even fair because it implies Pitt is at a disadvantage when Dixon and his staff don’t just subscribe to what Rivals and ESPN tell them. And if he knew anything next year’s class he wouldn’t even make such an absurd statement.

They also wouldn’t shut up about how good Pitt’s players are even while demeaning them for lack of pedigree. They’re more impressed with players who impress recruiters as 17 year olds and go viral on YouTube than players who understand the game and play it the right way.

I wouldn’t call it bias as much as lack of respect and some backhanded compliments. Pitt beats teams who then plummet in the rankings, and the two teams that hung losses on us have enjoyed meteoric ascent in rankings.

Even nationally, a lot of the coverage was Pitt “escapes” WVU. WVU was ranked 25 and we’re playing without our top scorer. How about BE team beats heated rival on road?

Comment by Ghost of Hornman 02.08.11 @ 1:27 pm

Nasir Robinson has been playing well all year. He’s a wonderful compliment to Gary McGee up front. Nasir has terffic moves to the hoop and is an outstanding finisher. You get the post up defence and rebounding from Gary McGee and the inside moves from Nasir Robinson. A few years ago I didn’t think either guy could play well enough to help us at this level. Fortunately Jamie Dixon has a good eye. He see abilities and talent that other people don’t see and then they work with them and make them better.

Comment by Justinian 02.08.11 @ 1:36 pm

hugh:

i agree. taylor needs to calm down and just play out there. every time he dunks he does that stupid salute or a chest bump. at least wait until it is a big shot or an impressive dunk. also, he made a fist like he was going to punch pepper. really dante? get yourself kicked out of the game, maybe kicked off the team, and give the program a black eye. he needs to be reprimanded.

Comment by Omar 02.08.11 @ 1:57 pm

I liked the good old days of PittBlather when hugh and Omar didn’t have such a lovefest. WTF?

Comment by Boubacar Aw 02.08.11 @ 2:05 pm

On the media coverage…I think the top national media are extremely fair in their coverage of Pitt..Parish on CBSonline, Seth Davis, Andy Katz all have nothing but praise for Dixon and Pitt all year..and even the ones who are slow in recognizing how great this team is I can give a pass. (Like everyone who has Pitt below Texas in their polls..no sense.)
I’ve watch every minute of every Pitt BB game the last 10 years and this years team keeps surprising even me week in and week out on just how good they are.

Overall I think Jay Bilas is as fair covering Pitt as an ACC guy will ever be…..though I too took exception with his comment that Pitt ‘can’t’ recruit big time recruits.

Comment by milo bloom 02.08.11 @ 2:34 pm

Agree Ghost…..while I didn’t hear Bilas last night, I heard from several sources he mouthed the usual lines concerning Pitt. There are notes obviously handed to these announcers beforehand as there are for all games. They all pretty much except for Bobby Knight, mouth verbatim the same tired, dreary 7-8 year lines concerning Pitt. It goes something like this, tough, blue collar(any team from Pittsburgh gets described this way), win ugly, win with no top talent, play half court, don’t shoot well, Jaime does an amazing job (Raftery favorite) (which is true), and several others of which most of you are acquainted.

Bobby Knight probably takes these notes handed to him and tosses them into the garbage. He did something on one of the ESPN’s last night highlighting Pitt and how well they execute. Again I was in a bar and the sound wasn’t turned up but it appeared around 9:30 or so and since he was doing the Kansas/Mizzou game live, it mustn’t have been on the main ESPN. Maybe it was. Did anyone see that segment. I know he said earlier this season that Pitt’s 1rst half vs. Georgetown was the best half of basketball he’d seen all season. Something most of the other media stiffs would never in a thousand years credit Pitt for.
Right on General !

Comment by melvinbennett 02.08.11 @ 2:51 pm

Couldn’t agree more on Bobby Knight..the guy is hands down the best color college BB announcer on TV.

Comment by milo bloom 02.08.11 @ 2:54 pm

Peppers deserved to get punched, not that it would have been a smart move. He should have been called on the flagrant foul — he made no play on the ball. That said, Taylor should know better than to respond with that elbow jab or anything else.

Comment by Ghost of Hornman 02.08.11 @ 2:55 pm

My recommendation: Mute the TV, employ parental controls on the sports media and just enjoy your Panthers.

This is one great team.

Comment by steve 02.08.11 @ 3:02 pm

Agree on Taylor. He needs to calm down. He easily could have had a technical last night.

I’m not sure if we’ll win Saturday night w/out Gibbs, but I’m confident that it will be a very good game.

Was in the car briefly earlier and heard a snippet of Dixon talking about Gibbs, something to the effect of: “He was riding the stationary bike yesterday and said his knee didn’t hurt.” He said the training staff is monitoring Gibbs closely and being “very conservative.”

Comment by Carmen 02.08.11 @ 3:33 pm

Taylor did get a T, and shortly after picked up his 4th foul when he could have only had 3. At least Pitt pulled away and it didn’t matter that Taylor and McGhee had 4

Comment by Ghost of Hornman 02.08.11 @ 4:42 pm

I really appreciate Bob Knight’s commentary. He appreciates Pitt’s style of play and gives a lot of accolades to Jamie Dixon as a coach. I respect his opinions and his commentary. He’s not a Cheerleader like Digger Phelps is whenever Notre Dame plays. Knight is honest as an anouncer and is impartial in his praise and his criticism.
