At least, that appears to be the the indications. Forget the jump-the-gun news report. Or Pitt’s denial.

The best indication is that modern communication medium of text message (hat tip to Pitt Script).

Two Penn State players said Wednesday night they have been text-messaged by Tom Bradley that he has been offered the Pittsburgh Panthers head coaching job and that he intends to accept it once details are worked out, according to a PSU team source.

To one player, Bradley texted: “Love you kids. Going to miss you. Wish I could take you with me. Anything I can do for you, let me know.”

So there you go.

What does it all mean? Well, for starters I can close a bunch of browser tabs and trash the post I had been working on with some of the other candidates.

After that, I’m not sure.

I think a lot depends on the assistants he hires. I am hoping that it isn’t too late to keep Greg Gattuso and David Walker from Wannstedt’s staff. Both are well worth keeping. After that, well the Teryl Austin as DC rumor sounds good. The OC, though, is the biggie.

Oh, and one other thing I am certain. AD Steve Pederson has been neutered.

UPDATE (10:20): Aw, hell. Now David Jones is retracting the whole texting story. Might be a long night.

UPDATE (11:36): Last update. This tweet from Penn State Linebacker Nate Stupar (at least until it is retracted) might be a clue.

Tom Bradley got Pitt job. Congrats!

Oh, and the Pitt News has more reasons why Pederson’s days are numbered. The donors are revolting.

Both alumni donors, Paul Helsel and football great Bill Fralic, have been in the John Bowman Society since at least 2005, meaning they have donated between $10,000 and $24,999 each year.

Both men also claimed to have heard similar sentiments from a number of other donors —  including one who has reportedly pledged six figures to the University — but declined to share those donors’ names.

“It’s between the other donors and the University,” said Fralic, who played on Pitt’s offensive line in the mid-80s and then for the Atlanta Falcons. “But I know a lot of big financial supporters, and there are a significant number of them that tell me they don’t want anything to do with the program or the athletic department anymore.”

You can be an arrogant ass in many things — as long as you don’t fail. Once you do, it becomes payback and you find out how few people will support you. Just ask DickRod.

Damn. I guess my resume didn’t woo them as I expected.

if we get austin, im in. also, how bout lookin to delaware’s head coach for oc?

Comment by Jon 01.05.11 @ 10:05 pm

I’m skeptical about this hire, but I’ll reserve judgment until I see who the coordinators are.

And thanks, Michael Haywood. The last few days wouldn’t have been so much fun if you hadn’t gone to South Bend.

Comment by Scott 01.05.11 @ 10:08 pm

this guy has way too much psu connections. Played there, never coached anywhere but there, 3-5 family members plyed there. I am kind of wondering why he even wants to coach at pitt. of all the schools in the nation, pitt is the one he has been bread to hate

Comment by mike 01.05.11 @ 10:10 pm

Yeah, I can’t believe Pederson is around much longer after this.

When the same guy you wouldn’t even call on the phone last month is being hired as head ball coach, you’re not really the athletic director anymore.

Comment by maguro 01.05.11 @ 10:10 pm

He owns a house in Aspenwall on the bluff.

Comment by Marco 01.05.11 @ 10:12 pm

wanny has to feel like total shit, first haywood, now this guy

I’m squinting really hard to see the upgrade

Comment by mike 01.05.11 @ 10:12 pm

if he can stay out of the clink for more than two weeks, it’s already a better hire than the last.

i think this points to the imminrnt departure of steve pederson…

Comment by ECH 01.05.11 @ 10:13 pm

@mike – Bradley’s father played hoops for Pitt. I seriously doubt he was bred to hate his dad’s alma mater.

Comment by maguro 01.05.11 @ 10:13 pm

“AD Steve Pederson has been neutered.”??? To be neutered, you needed to have a penis prior to the neutering, so it is not possible to neuter Steve Pederson. Did Jackie Sherrill perform the neutering like he did to a bull in front of his Miss St team?

Comment by dish 01.05.11 @ 10:14 pm

I’m ready to be OC. I have no experience but i promise to throw the ball down the field every play… Go PITT!!!!

Comment by Matty 01.05.11 @ 10:15 pm

Who cares, who cares, who cares, he is from Penn State? Oh, I see, he will throw games and make us look bad so PSU looks better.
He won’t want to show PSU what they passed up, because people who play Div 1 football and then play to win for 30 years aren’t competitive.
His leaving PSU doesn’t leave any kind of hole in their staff, esp. if he brings their secondary or linebacker coach, and a few recruits?

He might be a good HC, he might not, but where he came from really does not matter.

Comment by Pwmcdupitt 01.05.11 @ 10:21 pm

Good friend of mine played for Penn State when Bradley was D-backs coach (Sandusky was DC) and he believes this is a fantastic hire for Pitt. He said the guy was great- intense, focused and extremely well respected/loved by his players. He was disappointed that JoePa didn’t hand over the reins to Bradley a couple years ago.

Especially considering the situation we have been in- this is an excellent hire. Retain Gattuso and Walker? Bring in a couple great coordinators???

HAIL TO PITT!!!

Comment by Dan35 01.05.11 @ 10:22 pm

the best news from Chas’ post is the neutering of Mr. Inept

the most pertinent is who the OC will be if Bradley is hired

Comment by wbb 01.05.11 @ 10:22 pm

Let’s take a quiz – answer Wanny or Bradley.

1. Defensive minded
2. connected in WPa
3. Presence in recruits’ living room
4. A stabilizing factor
5. Offensive innovator
6. Coached many places w/ many coaches – broad experience
7. Can sell recruits on knowing the NFL – flashing superbowl rings
8. Can tell an great story about their love for the school they coach at ie. credibility with selling Pitt
9. Good at schmoozing donors, alumni, etc
10. head coaching experience

Someone pls help me here. What am I missing? BRADLEY IS WANNY LITE !! Why is everyone so infatuated with him? I’m sure he’s a great guy, but we had a great guy.

About the only positive I see out of hiring him is that when he gets fired in 4 years he won’t be able to make everyone feel as guilty as Wanny did with the whole “I’m a loyal Pitt guy” thing.

Comment by zakman 01.05.11 @ 10:25 pm

I agree.. So long as we can retain Gattuso and Walker, I think things might be ok. I’d still like to see Austin as DC and someone competent to run the offense. Keeler I think would be an amazing hire as OC, but I doubt he would ever leave what he has in DE for the OC position at pitt

Comment by usd121 01.05.11 @ 10:31 pm

C’mon guys. This rivalry shit doesn’t work with coaches. Its about team — whichever one you’re coaching this week. Oh, yeah, and the money.

Bradley, well, I don’t know. Safe hire. Makes the Golden Pumas happy, I guess.

Maybe an OC who likes the A-10.

Comment by Spanky 01.05.11 @ 10:32 pm

Dish- pssst…neutering means removing the testicles, not the penis. Just wanted to clue you in. But you were going in the right direction. I’m not sure SP has those left after this weekend, either.

And Zakman – have you been reading all along? The flashy exciting choices are not interested. If we get Bradley, we get a well respected experienced man who just might be able to get things going in the right direction again. Yes, that sentence I just typed does describe DW, but he did not deliver the wins when it mattered. Someone else is coming in and Bradley is probably the best of the ones who would take it.

Comment by Pwmcdupitt 01.05.11 @ 10:34 pm

maguro – “Bradley’s father played hoops for Pitt. I seriously doubt he was bred to hate his dad’s alma mater.”

cool fact I didn’t know, thanks for the info, now i feel a little better….seriously

Comment by mike 01.05.11 @ 10:35 pm

If its true, it’s great news. At this point, Pitt needed someone who could recruit, teach, and deal well with the media and alumni. Tom Bradley can do all those things. We didn’t need a “splash” hire. There is talent at Pitt and its a good situation for him.

Comment by Justinian 01.05.11 @ 10:37 pm

Great hire! Can the Pitt script be far behind?!

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Pitt It Is 01.05.11 @ 10:49 pm

Of the list 1,4,6 and 9 are the most important for a HC. 10 is preferred but organization and knowledge of the game, character should be there. As far as SP I’m not sure I’d beat on him as much. Recall this is about the kids. The search had to be limited because the teams you’d like either a head coach or assistant from were in bowls – I’d guess about 26-30 teams through Jan2. You can’t pull either a HC or an assistant from his team when they’re prepping for a game with the kids they recruited. Alabama? PSU? Florida? Seriously? SP did what he could with the hand he was dealt. Not as thoroughly as we would’ve liked as things unfortunately turned out. And if you’d like to look at the other side how many $$$ was that young lady thinking about? Seeing their stories didn’t match up – I’ll wait til after the hearing thank you.

Comment by Joe in Pittsburgh 01.05.11 @ 10:54 pm

I hope it is just that Pitt wanted to wait until Friday to get maximum coverage during the bowl game.

Comment by Pwmcdupitt 01.05.11 @ 10:55 pm

And just why not Joe Paterno for HC? State wants to get rid of him. We already hired a 74 year old OC. I had visions of Stuhldreher, Miller, Crowley, and Layden. But no. Not for Spanky,

But the report of “texting” was wrong? What is this “texting”?

Comment by Spanky 01.05.11 @ 10:56 pm

Anybody remember the clowns in the VW?

Comment by Spanky 01.05.11 @ 10:59 pm

I called it, my kid was right!

Comment by Milton 01.05.11 @ 11:09 pm

Can Tom Bradley outcoach Gary Patterson and Dana Holgersen and get us to multiple BCS bowls? If not, don’t hire him! Isn’t it safer to take a risk, when you’re in the situation Pitt football is in?

Comment by The Rooster 01.05.11 @ 11:10 pm

Bradley has not been hired and Tod Graham will be in town thursday to talk to the powers that be it was just on KDKA tv so we are not at the end yet. But they did say Sunseri is not at top of list so some good news there so the search goes on.

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.05.11 @ 11:18 pm

What about Buddy Morris? I havent heard anything about him! I think he is as important as Gattuso or Walker to retain.

Comment by QuipPitt 01.05.11 @ 11:20 pm

Thank you frank, NOW I can go get some sleep.

Comment by Pwmcdupitt 01.05.11 @ 11:20 pm

Tom Bradley has been running the show at Penn State for at least the last 5 years.

And is it any coincidence that PSUcks experienced a few resurgences after the dismal, early 2000s when Paturdo was still 100% in charge?

This is the turning of the tide. Pitt WILL take over Penn State’s spot as the premier college football program in the state.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 01.05.11 @ 11:30 pm

Lets get to work i dont care anymore at this point anyone except haywood was my stance .the whole time , so i am happy , but i would like to see this thing over with !

Comment by POLE 01.05.11 @ 11:30 pm

Obviously Pitt’s D will be good with Bradley. We will actually see good linebackers! Woohoo! The unknown is what kind of offense he prefers and who he hires as OC.
