So Wannstedt in Final Presser

I was going to leave it alone, but the more I thought about it the more annoyed I got. Dave Wannstedt held what should have been his final press conference as a direct representative of Pitt. My initial impulse was that he let his own wounded pride and anger at AD Pederson overrule all else. Disappointingly, after 24 hours, I’m still at the same spot.

This is one of those times when just about everyone saw something the same way. It’s not some Rashomon event.

Ron Cook came down hard on the man.

Another thing that was really irksome about Wannstedt’s announcement was the shameless way he tried to make himself seem like a sympathetic victim. He talked about how people from “around here” know the importance of loyalty. That was a direct shot at Pederson, who’s not from around here.

I guess I understand Wannstedt’s bitterness in a way, but that “loyalty” nonsense was way over the top. Yes, he’s from Pittsburgh. And yes, he’s a Pitt man. But that doesn’t mean he has a coaching job for life. I repeat: Wannstedt should have been fired.

It’s a shame the end of the Wannstedt era at Pitt has to be like this. It’s a shame he’s leaving a smaller man than he came in as six years ago. You might remember his promise then to do great things. “It has been way too long since we’ve won the national championship here at the University of Pittsburgh.”

As it turned out, those words were hollow. So were his parting words Monday.

“It’s all about the kids. It’s always about the kids. They know I’d do anything for them.”

Anything but be there with them when they play their final game.

That was a theme.

When emotion trumps common sense, you get the type of press conference Dave Wannstedt held at Pitt Monday afternoon.

Wannstedt, who resigned under pressure as football coach at Pitt last month, reminded us that he was a “Pitt guy” and “Pittsburgh guy” and how important loyalty was in his life.

Then he told the assembled media that he was abandoning the players and would not coach the Panthers during their game against Kentucky in the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham, Ala.

There is a disconnect there, but Wannstedt doesn’t see it.

Look, it had to be hard for Wannstedt. We all know he didn’t see the firing coming. It’s part of his character. That not too much of this disappointing season was his fault. The injuries to Greg Romeus and Dan Mason. The limited number of seniors. The new players on the O-line and at QB.

The issues of poor recruiting at linebacker, O-line, defensive backs “were what they were” or something else. All the poor play and mistakes, correctable — with time. Essentially it came back to “just not catching a break.”

And yes, we all know that AD Steve Pederson botched the whole forced resignation thing. Whatever the attempts to soften the blow and help Wannstedt’s reputation, it was not believed from the moment it happened. And yes, there is no question he needed to put a time limit on Wannstedt to make a decision. It looked like a form of cowardice on Pederson’s part. He didn’t want to have to confront Wannstedt over the decision, instead assuming that Wannstedt wouldn’t be so hurt and petty, as to drag it out.

So, no, this didn’t happen in a vacuum and without plenty of blame. But the length taken to make the call. The final press conference only held the day before Pitt travels to Birmingham. That’s all on Wannstedt. It was all in his control.

What makes it worse. Far worse, was that Wannstedt admitted in the press conference that he had known for some time that he wouldn’t coach the team — but wasn’t telling anyone.

Wannstedt said he told his seniors Sunday night he would not coach the Panthers in their bowl game but said he did not take long to make his decision about coaching the BBVA Compass Bowl.

“I just didn’t want to tell you guys,” he told reporters.

Whether it was a weak attempt at a joke to/with the media, it falls flat.

It truly makes him look small and petty. He yo-yo’d the team. His own players. The assistant coaches. All to get back at Pederson? Sad.

No, we were right, Wanny sucked!! I thought Pederson should have been gone years ago too!! I don’t know which one is the bigger buffoon???

We don’t need no stinking bald headed coaches at Pitt.

Another strike against Bald Rod.

From day one of the Pitt Saga, I have thought this would be a great hire. Did I think that it would honestly be a possibilty, knowing Pitt’s frugalness, I would say no. But because of the mess that has been created-heck Pitt was featured on Outside the Lines today, I would say anything that could bring a positive we should welcome it. We as Pitt Alumni and Fans have been starved for glory for long enough. We have tolerated mediocrity for long enough. Maybe I am a dreamer, but I still believe that besides being a wonderful academic institution, Pitt can be a great football school. For that, I am willing to try to find anything positive, and not shoot down things just to be negative. That is the frustrating thing with this fan base, is that we cling to negativity. Even with the Haywood hire, I was going to give him a chance; the majority of the base bitched and moaned about what a mistake. The truth is, that it very well might have been a good hire, had Haywood not made a costly mistake that will affect him more than just the coaching and football world. So why not go after someone who has shown that he can win in the Big East, and puts a dynamic offense on the field each Saturday that is exciting to watch? I can’t blame him for leaving WVU for Michigan, he tried it and it failed, that doesn’t mean that he isn’t a good coach. The worst thing that could potentially happen is that UConn lands him and it comes back and bites us in the butt to make this whole mess even worse. This program is in disarray and needs something to turn it around-Wanny built up some talent, but just didn’t know how to use it. Maybe RichRod can.

We’re at a serious crossroads. Either we’re in it to win and need to think outside the box or we’re not. The move to fire Wanny says that we want to win big vs. maintain the status quo. If that’s the case I’d prefer to not start from scratch (especially with the way things have gone with the search)with a no name assistant or unproven lower level HC. WVU bias aside….why not RichRod? I know it won’t happen as we know what to expect…but why not at least consider it? He makes my skin crawl too but I’m trying to be objective…

That’s why that whole Baby Daddy thing wasn’t going to or supposed to work. He went to ND and lived in South Bend.

It’s the whole wrong cleat hex rearing it’s ugly head again in a different manner.

TwilightZone, watch what you say about those of us who are folicully-challenged. Just cause your bald doesn’t mean squat! Maybe we need to start calling you TwilightDick

Comment by NIMROD&& 01.04.11 @ 5:18 pm

well it was mark may and not an a-hole blogger who called for pitt to hire rich rod. and honestly what situation would scare pitt fans more-rich rod going to uconn or tom bradley going to uconn? because i think most fans would feel more threatened by rich rod coaching uconn then tom bradley but tom bradley should be our next coach? really

Comment by druc 01.04.11 @ 5:20 pm

I think the last hire proved beyond any doubt, SP is incapable of thinking outside the box. This man IS the box personified.

Hope I’m wrong, we shall see.

Comment by TwilightZone 01.04.11 @ 5:22 pm

LOL, I just did that to draw out the Bald Eagles among us. It’s very important that a head coach have hair imho, it shows virility. Look what happened to our last bald headed coach.

Todd Graham is the man for this job plus he only makes 1.1 Mil…Check out his resume…Pretty impressive plus it looks like he is good at cleaning up a mess

Comment by Pitt4Life 01.04.11 @ 5:25 pm

Steve thanks for remembering cleatgate. Pitt deserved to lose to a lousy NDU team. How can any college level program not know the field conditions for a game. I will guarantee you that when football powers like Holy Cross and Colgate play each other they wear the proper spikes!

Comment by isnore 01.04.11 @ 5:27 pm

Sorry Pitt4life, no good Tex Mex in the ‘burgh.

Comment by steve 01.04.11 @ 5:28 pm

Thank God the basketball team is in action tomorrow nite, I’m getting tired of this coaching search crap.

We best not look past Providence, they are much improved this year and we ONLY beat them by 2 points last year at The Pete.

And traditionally, Providence plays us tough there. Remember the last time, we were #1 in the polls and lost.

Comment by TwilightZone 01.04.11 @ 5:33 pm

TwilightZone indeed, hoops tonight, not tomorrow

Comment by steve 01.04.11 @ 5:35 pm

Tonight, I could have sworn the game was on the 5th.

Well that’s even better. Anything to change the subject for a evening and avoid thinking what new catastrophe SP is working on.

Comment by TwilightZone 01.04.11 @ 5:38 pm

Steve tell me who can compete with his resume with the stipulation they will fit in with Pitt’s Frugal Tastes

Comment by Pitt4Life 01.04.11 @ 5:39 pm

Yeah, but we’re blacked out in tonight in joisey. Gotta dig up a streaming Providence radio station

Comment by steve 01.04.11 @ 5:40 pm

We would regret selling out souls for RichRod. We need a long term coach with out the baggage. We cannot even think about RichRod. He would be a disaster for us.

Comment by Bill Hammer 01.04.11 @ 5:42 pm

Pitt4Life, if we can get Graham great. But word is that he’s interested in neither peirogies or O’s.

We need someone who’s sampled and has learned to love our local cuisine:

Aye, I am the swashbucklin’ man for the post. I can use me sea legs to raid through the air for ye olde Panthers.

Give Mikey the Pirate a call here in Treasures Cove, also known as Florida and let us discuss the booty tendered for me services.

Todd Graham does have a full head of hair!

Steve – just watch the game tonight on ESPN3…no need for Providence radio

Comment by Jerome Lane 01.04.11 @ 5:51 pm

Well Mikey, we paid over a million year for pure mediocrity, we should have something for you!!

No one at Pitt , SP or Nordy, appears to have any vision as to what this hiring really means. This hire needs to position Pitt for the next round of Conference expansion. Its coming sooner or later .Better to pay for a big name , can’t miss candidate now, than take a chance by going cheap. A coach that falls into that can’t miss category is Chris Petersen, according to College Football Top 100 Coaches Salary he makes $900,000 . If WVU can pay $2.5M, Pitt can too. Petersen would win the Big East and position Pitt for the B10 or ACC when expansion occurs. The increased coaching salary salary can be recouped by the $22M paid out by the B10 in just one year. I’m always getting mailings to donate to the Pitt $1.5B endowment fund, tap it now for a coaches’ salary as seed money to get into a better conference, then have your athletic program expenses covered by the windfall from the new conference. Petersen could not turn down $2.5M to leave Boise. He has 30 victories over the last 3 years.

Mark May just on tv he wants Dick Rod he said pitt call Dick Rod now.

Teryl Austin is now the Defensive Coordinator at the University of Texas. Got the job 2-3 weeks ago. He is not available. Would have been a nice fit but that one is not going to happen.

We Pitt fans are a fickle bunch…We say Dave Wannstedt “sucks”, is an “idiot”, a “moron”, a “terrible game day coach”, “anybody but DW” we say! We call for him to get fired…he gets fired…I would think the last thing any of us would want is for him to coach us for one more game…He announces he will not coach the bowl game…We say Dave Wannstedt “sucks”, he is an “egomaniac”, he is “petty”, “so much for loyalty”…Dave Wannstedt is our “former” former coach! So what if he coaches or does not coach the game. I bet if he announced he was going to it would have been “just go away already” from the fanbase. If you are angry at how he came to this decision put your anger squarely where it belongs, which is on Steve Pederson. He set this fiasco up with his “leadership” skills.

PITT fan in Atlanta, Teryl Austin never went to Austin!

Apparently he was turned down for Texas job 2-3 weeks ago.
