Wannstedt Won’t Do Birmingham

Not that anyone seems to have remembered or cared, but Pitt still has a bowl game in less than a week.

We will find out officially sometime around noon, but it now appears that Dave Wannstedt won’t coach a final game.

Pitt defensive coordinator Phil Bennett will be named interim head coach for the Panthers and coach them in the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham, Ala., against the University of Kentucky, according to a source.

Former Pitt head coach Dave Wannstedt informed his staff this morning that he will not coach in the game, the source said. Wannstedt was forced to resign from his job Dec. 7, but remained with the university as an assistant to Athletic Director Steve Pederson.

Wannstedt scheduled a noon news conference today to discuss the coaching situation. The souce said Wannstedt has not informed Pederson or Chancellor Mark Nordenberg of his intentions as of this morning.

And by “coaching situation,” he means his own and who is coaching on the 8th. Not the programs.  He is not planning to answer any questions about the mess that is finding his replacement.

The clusterfvck continues. Where is wanny’s loyalty to his kids? Everybody involved in this fiasco disgusts me.

Comment by ECH 01.03.11 @ 11:16 am

I agree with ECH.

I understand The Stache is pissed he got let go, but he should have informed the players he was not coaching w/in a week of his dimsissal or stuck with them and coached in Birmingham.

Dragging this out just to “stick it” to Pederson/Nordenberg was pathetic.

Comment by Roman 01.03.11 @ 11:23 am

I guess this means we’ll get to see a pro-set offense in the “bowl” game that is very vanilla with no pre-snap movement to confuse the defense, and no half-time adjustments. Sounds eerily similar to Phil Bennett’s defense, huh?

Comment by Flip2Script 01.03.11 @ 11:26 am

Who will run the offense? Once the new HC is hired Cigs is certainly not going to coach the game as the Rutgers OC in waiting… Maybe Wanny will be named AD by then and can handle from up top….ha. I wonder if Bradley will bring Bolden with him…

Comment by FG 01.03.11 @ 11:40 am

In the immortal words whispered over time, WHAT ME WORRY?

Wanny, the Pitt guy to the core, does anyone remember in 1978 what Wanny and Jimmy Johnson did to piss off Jackie Sherill at the Tangerine Bowl prior to their departure to OSU?

Comment by Alfred E. Neuman 01.03.11 @ 11:47 am

Again, simply pathetic situation at Pitt. Thank god for basketball.

Comment by Pitt it Is 01.03.11 @ 11:47 am

This seems to put Wannstedt’s actions in perspective:

I can’t knock Wanny for disloyalty – he was fired, after all. But that it took so long did a real disservice to his kids. All the confusion about who was in charge this week was due to this, not the Haywood situation.

Good luck to Phil Bennett trying to get these kids ready to play. He’s going to need it.

Comment by 85 01.03.11 @ 11:51 am

Does anyone think wanny comes off as a hypocrite being that he cares about the kids so much? Shouldn’t he show some solidarity with them at least?

Comment by Scott 01.03.11 @ 11:52 am

since when does the HC schedule a news conference?? who the hell is in charge? what a joke. at this point, i’d be fine with nordy firing SP, just start from absolute square one.

Comment by wilk 01.03.11 @ 11:57 am

You guys are really going to find fault with Wanny for doing this? He was forced to resign and replaced with a “character” guy who put the program into a tailspin. Now he’s going to be the first one from the University to make a public statement (albeit unrelated to Heywood) bringing with him news that no one necessarily wants to hear. He’s not even the face of the program anymore and he is going to have to explain himself for not coaching a meaningless bowl game before Nordy and SP make public apologies to Alumni, fans and students for a much much bigger tragedy.

The way he and his staff were treated by Heywood and the athletic department is more than enough reason for him to ‘stick it to’ Nordy and SP, if he were really doing that. GIve the guy 2 f’ing weeks to make up his mind. He was FORCED OUT OF A JOB HE LOVED BY AN INSTITUTION HE CARES ABOUT. How would you react?

Comment by PPD 01.03.11 @ 12:05 pm

boo fucking hoo. to paraphrase dan hawkins: “this is division one football, it ain’t intramurals”. it’s a business. wanny is a millionaire, ex NFL hc with a HUGE ego. quit acting like a baby.

Comment by wilk 01.03.11 @ 12:15 pm

The arrogance of Dave Wannstedt really showed today. The rest was BS. How can Pitt let a presser like this occur? Who is in charge of this madhouse? The inmates??

Comment by AYFKM 72 01.03.11 @ 12:29 pm

What can Pitt do to stop it? Fire him?

Comment by Navy Panther 01.03.11 @ 12:32 pm

Your right AYFKM 72. What loyalty does he actually have to Pitt??? He draged it out this long for what…

Comment by Lou 01.03.11 @ 12:33 pm

Heres what you do!!!

You should have kept your mouth shut and let him coach the game then fire him..

All along speaking with Bradley or whatever other coach you though that you were going to hire who isnt being sought after by anyone else.

After all most coaches do not want to discuss moving from a team while they are still playing in a bowl. Pederson tore apart two college prgrams. Miami Ohio and Pitt with one stupid move. Not to mention Haywoods poor girlfriend.

All of the coaches that they are speaking with would not have been seriously considered anywhere else.

Pederson is the ego maniac. Not DW.

Comment by Pitt Man 01.03.11 @ 12:38 pm

haha a press conference about how loyal he is. some things never change. wanny all talk and no action. instead of talking about loyalty why didn’t he show it and stick by his players. it is one thing to not coach in the game but don’t call a press conference to lecture about loyalty.

Comment by druc 01.03.11 @ 12:41 pm

Just listened to the press conference. If his focus was the kids and not overshadowing them….why hold that press conference? Pitt had no choice but to keep him on the payroll and hope that he would be mature about his decisions…he had a choice as to how he would handle it being a Pitt guy. He failed! Instead of just being quiet and announcing after a few days that he was coaching the team in the bowl he decided he was going to make SP look bad instead. It’s not about the kids its about Dave’s ego as it relates to public perception. That press conference was ridiculous….still trying to make himself look good after not cutting it (at the expense of those around him). Typical Wanny until the end…

Comment by FG 01.03.11 @ 12:44 pm

Agreed, Pitt Man.

And Lou- I think his loyalty to Pitt was tested enough when he was told to tell everyone that HE chose to resign and not forced to quit so that SP could save face.

Also- who, gives two craps about this bowl game at this point? What difference does it make if the players didn’t know who was going to coach them until today??

Comment by PPD 01.03.11 @ 12:44 pm

Let Wanny say his piece. The last time he talked after his “resignation,” it didn’t go the way he wanted it to. Maybe this is stuff he’d have said back then. With everything that’s happened since, it’s all in a different context now. He’s a good guy, and I do think he cares about the kids and vice-versa, but he mishandled this by waiting so long to make up his mind. That said, this is about #1000 on the list of things Pitt football has done wrong over the last 6 weeks or so.

Comment by 85 01.03.11 @ 12:48 pm

Why not put some of this on SP too? Isn’t it just as much on him than it is on Wanny for handling this incorrectly? Who’s in charge in the athletic department if they let the coach decide who’s going to be in charge on game-day? SP has proven to be more inept at his job than the foreman at Chernobyl

Comment by PPD 01.03.11 @ 12:51 pm

I expect a better hire from Nordy than Pederson.

I assume SP has nothing to do with this selection.

I expect this hire will make us all happy because it will be an obvious choice rather than a cheap abstract choice, like the one already made.

I also expect that after Pederson assists the University to make this right he will be let go.

Even he would expect that.

Comment by Pitt Man 01.03.11 @ 12:58 pm

My friend needs some advice. He said that he loves his wife and did his best, but she threw him out of the house. She said she could find someone better, but she doesn’t yet know who. In the meantime, she wants my friend to take her shopping and do various errands and chores for her. Some say my friend would show some class if he would just do what his wife asks him to do and act like he did not get thrown out the door.

Opinions?

Comment by BigGuy 01.03.11 @ 1:07 pm

PPD:

What are you talking about? You just described “sour grapes”. Wannstedt just gave us an example of why he should not be the head coach at Pitt or anywhere else? Just because the guy they hired is an idiot doesn’t mean that Wannstedt deserved to keep his job.

Comment by Omar 01.03.11 @ 1:16 pm

BigGuy:

Wannstedt is still getting paid? Do your job.

Comment by Omar 01.03.11 @ 1:18 pm

BigGuy-

Your analogy brightened an otherwise depressing day.
Tell your friend to take the old lady shopping. Do it for the kids. Especially if he’s still getting “paid”.

Comment by Dock71 01.03.11 @ 1:25 pm

It isn’t his job. They told him they don’t need him to do his job. He does not have to do a darn thing. And I was one of the ones who felt he had to go, no matter how sad it was.

Comment by Pwmcdupitt 01.03.11 @ 1:31 pm

Omar- Nowhere in any of my posts did I say that Wannstedt should have kept his job and I’m not sure where you’re getting that from.

What I am saying is that it’s ridiculous to say that he should be completely faulted for the way his “resigning” has been treated by the athletic department. He said he wasn’t going to make up his mind until after New Years. If the athletic department didn’t like that, couldn’t they have made up his mind for him???

Look- If you hire a guy to replace DW, who pretty much destroyed the program, and then expect DW to step in and help out again then you’re a fool. You reap what you sow.

Comment by PPD 01.03.11 @ 1:32 pm

It is obvious that dave wants to make Nordenberg and pederson look as bad as he can . They dont need mutch help with that . What he wants is for the talking heads is to hash the mess over and over at the bowl game. so that the AD looks bad and they will unless there is a new coach in place on game day if there is they will talk abought the new coach insted. will dave get what he wants? depends on how fast the AD moves on new coach.

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.03.11 @ 1:35 pm

the wife and husband analogy is incomplete. the wife would be the university and the husband wanny in your example. the kids are the players which you seemed to forget about. so when you break up with your wife do you not take care of your kids any longer. do you say good luck kids and goodbye and then throw a press conference talking about how loyal you are and how your father of the year.

Comment by druc 01.03.11 @ 1:41 pm

Another Pederson fiasco. When he was fired/resigned, one of the last lines of the press conference should have been, “No, Dave will not be coaching the team in the bowl game.”

I’m not Monday morning qb’ing, said it then, even more true as this past month has gone on, and even more clear today.

Comment by Dan 01.03.11 @ 1:55 pm

For this questioning his loyalty, what would you REALLY do after being fired after having coached Pitt to a successful, if modestly so, run the past few years. Yeah I’m sure you would be excited to coach and act like it’s totally detached from the administration and the current train wreck. Yeah I bet.

Comment by JoeP 01.03.11 @ 1:57 pm

We shouldn’t even be hearing his voice, nothing against him personally, but a fired coach should not be having a presser. Rediculous!!

Again, Smug Smile Steve blew it. Not only should they have announced he wouldn’t be coaching, they should have got him an office under panther hollow. Again, nothing against him, but, if you’re gonna keep an ex-employee on, that was fired, then you are gonna have things like this happen. Is he there to help, or are you just holding him hostage because you owe him money???

He should have just been let go, and pay the piper. What good is having him around, what’s he gonna do??? Paperwork in the chancellors office?? Poorly handled as usual!!! What are you gonna get for your money having him around and paying him, just to say, we saved a little, he still works here????

Good point on the radio, the first face of this whole weekend debacle you see, is your fired Head Coach???

I said this before, don’t over estimate these people, in higher posistions, they are just humans. “oooh, oooh, he’s the A.D., he’s the chancellor, oh, he’s a congressmen or wow, he’s a senator” Don’t sell yourself short, these are just guys, that a lot of times, don’t know any better than you!!

Comment by Dan 01.03.11 @ 2:13 pm

Hey Chas, I told you a couple days ago when you asked about unicorns or disaster, disaster would be interesting!!!!!!!! lol

Comment by Dan 01.03.11 @ 2:16 pm

Todd Graham from Tulsa was interviewed by Pitt and not hired but they should reopen discussions. He is 36-17 in 4 years as a head coach in conference USA and has won 10 or more games 3 out of the last 4 years. He has gone to 3 bowl games the last 4 years and is 3-0 averaging 56 points a game in these wins. He finished the season winning 9 of his last 10 games including beating Notre Dame at ND. He is a spread guy and was 10th in the country in scoring with 39 pts a game.

Comment by gameday 01.03.11 @ 6:03 pm

Comment by Rusty Dicks 01.03.11 @ 7:26 pm

Hey Rusty Dicks that key over there on the left that says “CAPS LOCKS” looks pretty rusty itself, try using it.

Comment by Dr. Tom 01.03.11 @ 8:48 pm

That analogy while entertaining left out one critical element. The other man.

Comment by CathedralofBlabber 01.03.11 @ 11:10 pm

Frankcan, I didn’t even realize that was you way back up there at 1:35. Well put. We’re proud of you.

Can you talk to RUSTY, though?
