Dammit. This 2010 year can’t come to a close soon enough for Pitt football.

This is not good.

NewsCenter 16 has confirmed that Mike Haywood, former Notre Dame player and offensive coordinator and newly-named Pittsburgh coach, has been arrested for domestic violence in South Bend.

St. Joseph County Police say Haywood was arrested around 2:30 p.m. on Friday at a home in the 50000 block of Hawthorne Meadow Drive.

He has a child with the woman living there.

Police say there was a custody issue and the woman attempted to leave.

As she left, police say a physical altercation broke out.

The woman told police Haywood grabbed her by the arm and neck and pushed her.

According to the police report, the woman had red marks on her neck, arms and back.

Wow. Just wow.

I’m not even going to speculate at this point. I have no idea how this plays out.

3 years ago Cignetti would have been mentioned as the same kind of hire as those guys you name. He is right under our nose.

maybe this is all going to be the best thing. A correction of the wrong path by SP.

He had to think really hard about hiring Jamie. The players lobbied for him.

Pitt develops great people in sports and society. Stay in house and make the right move.

I was just over at Yahoo NCAAF page where this is the Top story. It’s basically an AP story. However what I found quite ironic, is this AP story contains a paragraph that was not in the Post-Gazette story. Which is basically an AP story cut & paste job. Here’s that additional paragraph……
OMITTED by the PG.

“The University of Pittsburgh is aware of an alleged incident involving head football coach Michael Haywood today in South Bend, Indiana,” the school said in an e-mailed statement. “The University expects the highest standards of conduct from its employees, including its coaches, and any breach of those standards is a very serious matter. The University will decline further comment until more complete information is available.”

Funny how the PG omitted that part of the AP story. They seem to go to extremes to embarrass
Pitt, as in the whole Holgorson scenario played up by Zeise & Dunlap.

Pitt media is like Pitt fans in a lot of ways…

Frontrunners

When things are good Pitt is great.

When things are bad Pitt is horrible.

Ron Cook said after an OT loss to Utah in the first game of the season.

This is a terrible loss. Maybe the worst in Pitt History.

did you really expect anything less than all dropping pitt.

at least the new cach will have 40 scholarships available next year. Cause nobody is going to touch pitt now until they get this fixed.

the only wat to repair this is DW AD. SP gone. Cignetti HC the following year.

Comment by PittMan 12.31.10 @ 11:50 pm

ESPN also has the above paragraph noted in their article. Which is another AP cut & paste job.

God how I hate the PG.

Here is my suggestion-

Cignetti. Your interview begins now and ends next December. Good luck. Kick some balls, win some games, and get us out of this shitburger.

Inside story is that prior to the season Cignetti gave notice that he’d be looking elsewhere because he was being handcuffed. I’m confident he could be great if given the reins.

Comment by Dan35 01.01.11 @ 12:20 am

Y’know, my intent was to take some time off from Pitt football, at least not follow it like I had been. But Pitt just keeps pulling me back somehow.

1) We gotta see how this plays out, but if its anything like what has been reported, Nuclear Mike has to go. If not, the Pitt program is officially a joke. Recruiting is shot unless we get a new HC.

2) Pedersen absolutely must go. As I understand it, Nordy left the hire to Pedersen, and how big steve could miss some of this stuff is beyond me. Wanny would be great as the AD.

3) I’ve read that Dixon and Pedersen are pretty close, so I don’t know how that would affect Dixon.

4) Unlikely Pitt could get any of the assistants to stay. Why would Cignetti take the job temporarily with the situation as it is? Might as well move on to a new, stable position.

5) Unless Pitt makes a smooth move fast, this could have repercussions for several years. We have been slowly building recruiting, and that could be lost just because we look like clowns now, as well as everything else. And Pitt is now likely to grab just any HC to end this situation. We could be mediocre for several years.

You are right! Hire Bradley today.

Comment by TonyinHouston 01.01.11 @ 2:55 am

Why would anyone want to hire Bradley? He’s an assistant on a mediocre team, which doesn’t think enough of him to make him the “coach in waiting.” He used to recruit well in the Pgh area, but since DW got here, and there has been competition for recruits, he hasn’t even done very well in this area.

Comment by auggie from latrobe 01.01.11 @ 3:00 am

Haywood needs to be fired. Pederson needs to be fired.

Haywood is 46 years old and has a two year old child out of wedlock! This is high character? I would expect a 19 year old kid to do something like this, but not a 44 year old man. How old is the mother of this child? No doubt, the media will not release her name to the public, but Haywood never had any business being with her anyway. In this modern society that has political correctness shoved down our throats daily, there is no way the University of Pittsburgh can employ a man arrested for domestic violence as head football coach – even though Haywood is innocent until proven guilty, what mother will want Haywood, or any member of his staff, to come recruit her son to play for Pitt? Nobody. That is who. Haywood needs to go.

Ann arrest for DUI can be forgiven – maybe. This cannot be allowed.

Pederson screwed this up. A background check should have provided evidence of what Haywood did when not coaching. Pederson always has this dumb look on his face – he reminds me of the guy in the XBox commercials.

Hire Tom Bradley. Pay him what he wants. Ask Wannstedt if he wants to be AD. There will be mud on the face for a week and then it will all blow over.

Hopefully someone at the University or a football loving booster will wake up and throw some money at Tom Bradley, George O’Leary (UCF) or Boise State’s Chris Petersen.

SP knew Mack Daddy had a baby out of marriage yet still hired him. Those are great morals to teach High School kids don’t ya think.

SP needs to go as well unless Pitt is running a halfway house.

Why Haywood is toast. A telling statement from the university, not all of which appeared in the post-gazette story.

“The University of Pittsburgh is aware of an alleged incident involving head football coach Michael Haywood,” said E.J. Borghetti, Pitt’s senior associate athletic director. “The university expects the highest standards of conduct from its employees, including its coaches, and any breach of those standards is a very serious matter. The university will decline further comment until more complete information is available.”

Comment by Scott 01.01.11 @ 7:39 am

I don’t see any way Haywood ends up at Pitt, now, but here are some things to keep in mind.
What if she was leaving, and threatening to harm the child? We don’t know.
When were the police called, and by whom, in order to arrive while she had to be separated from him? Note the original story, from South Bend, states she had to be separated from him, not the other way around. Was he late returning the child after a visit? Was she refusing to let him have a visit? We don’t know.
What was their relationship when the child was conceived? We don’t know. We do know that he lives in Ohio, but pays for the house in South Bend, presumably so his child has a place to live.
Does he have a poor history with women? I have only seen one post, where the poster never returned to substantiate his/her charges, but again, we don’t know. If it is out there, I would think we would have heard more about it, but I would expect it to come out now, if it is there. Until then, we don’t know.
Too much is being made about his staying in jail. Indiana, like many states requires the accused, if the charges appear credible, to stay in jail until a judge hears the case. Even though these have been described as misdemeanor charges, domestic abuse is handled differently. That is because in an abusive relationship, where the abuser is using it to control the abused, the risk of serious harm or death rises drastically once the authorities are involved. The abuser feels his/her power has been reduced and gets even with the woman/man who has defied them by involving the law. The jail time is used to get the abused and any at risk children into a shelter, if possible a hidden one. Sadly, this is something we DO know. Since they don’t live together, this does not appear to be him controlling her. Is she using the child to try to control him? We don’t know.

The budget cuts have decimated the shelter system, at a time when, because of the frustration of unemployment, the need has increased. If you have money you have to decided not to send to Pitt, perhaps you could try to make something positive out of this by finding a shelter in your area, and donating to it. Check out their websites and links, the need is desperate and they are saving the lives of children, women, and even men, in more ways than one.

What an unbelievable fiasco!!!!
OK, let the Haywood jokes begin:
-One Pitt fan to another, “Think our new coach will win any close games for us next year? Nah, rumor around South Bend is that he’s a CHOKER!
-A friend calls Haywood, What you doing for News Years Eve? Gettin fingerprinted!
-Haywood’s first News Year resolution: Eliminate illegal use of hands violations.
-Haywood’s retort to being accused a wife beater, “BS I never married da bitch!
-Haywood’s girlfriend’s reply to the question on why she still sees Haywood:….Beats me.
-Whats the difference between a severe case of diarrhea and the news of Mike Haywood’s arrest? Nothing, both make Steve Pederson sh*t himself!

Believe it or not, this is very sad to write.

Although from the beginning I despised SP and feel that he should have never been brought back, I was shocked and to say the least, disappointed in the actions of MH.

Yes, this all does rest on SP. He did not do his homework, did not vet MH and of course, worried about the bottom line.

We knew when MH was hired that the ending to the movie would not be a good one but NO ONE even expected this.

It is time to say goodbye to MH and SP.

What Nordy does now determines the whole fate of the Panther football program. We either make a strong and meaningful dedication to the program, or be content to be a basketball school.
