Paul Zeise makes some nice points that the Utah game is not the be-all, end-all game for Pitt. Winning or losing it does not make the season. Even replete with good examples from last year. It’s rational, reasonable and defensible.

It is a non-conference game. Even if Pitt loses, they can still make (and even win) a BCS bowl simply by winning the Big East. Just as Oregon and Ohio State lost their high profile early season non-cons and still went to the Rose Bowl.

You could make a good argument that what everyone ultimately uses to judge the success of the season would be how the team did in the bowl game. Cinci went 12-0 last year, were possibly a few seconds away from the BCS Championship game if Texas QB Colt McCoy’s pass hung a little longer, and lost their head coach before they went to the Sugar Bowl. That didn’t matter, getting pounded by Florida is all people think about with that Cinci team.

There are three major non-con games for Pitt: at Utah, Miami and at Notre Dame. If Pitt were to go 2-1 in those games, I think most Pitt fans would generally prefer the two wins came against Miami and Notre Dame. It isn’t that Utah isn’t as good or as important, it is that there is more history with the other teams and an impulse to want to see Pitt win those other games more.

That said, it is a huge deal and Pitt really needs to win this game. Not because the season would be lost. Not because of revenge for the Fiesta Bowl. Not even for the initial national respect for Pitt — which quickly becomes meaningless if Pitt doesn’t keep winning and wins the Big East.

These are emotional arguments more than rational, intellectual ones. I know that. The point is fandom isn’t rational. It is much more emotional, and that is why it is so important. It isn’t about the season as a whole.

It matters because Pitt hasn’t won this sort of game under Coach Wannstedt. Pitt hasn’t won a tough opener under Wannstedt. Notre Dame opener in 2005. Even the season opener versus Bowling Green in 2008. Those jump out at you. It’s even worse for Pitt to play good teams on the road, or even less than good teams on the road. Nebraska in 2005. Michigan State and Virginia in 2007, NC State in 2009.

No, the sample size is not large for Pitt in Wannstedt’s previous five years for quality/name-brand road games. Only six games, but Pitt has only notched 2 wins — Notre Dame and Navy in 2008.

It matters because the way Pitt wants to sell this season, they need the strong start. We’ve discussed the debacle of parking this season — and the ill-will it created. If Pitt stumbles on the road, that impacts the tolerance to put up with the inconveniences and annoyances of going to the game and tailgating. The overall schedule is tough, but the home schedule only has 3 games with teams likely to finish above .500 — Miami (Thursday night), Rutgers and WVU (Friday after Thanksgiving).

It matters because for all those who decry the negativity of Pitt fans, or that there is a lack of looking at the big picture of the season, or expecting the worst — they have generally been right for the last 30 years.

To get that to change, Pitt has to win these games. That is what happened in basketball. Pitt fans now expect to win the tough games and no one is surprised anymore when they do. It can happen in football as well.

I believe you wrote this while standing on a soap box and the fight song playing in the background.
I’m fired-up!

Well, it’s a little too early (even by my standards) to start drinking, so…

Comment by Chas 08.25.10 @ 10:10 am

You really hit the basketball analogy perfectly. Ten years ago we would not expect to win every game we played. Now, even in down years, we expect to win or at least make it a close game with anyone we play including. This is the tramsformation that the football program desparately needs.

Comment by Coach Ditka 08.25.10 @ 10:15 am

I agree. This game is huge. Win and we can build the momentum to have a great season and take the proverbial next step. Lose and things could devolve quickly. I don’t know if I can wait 8 more days. I need this game now!!!

Comment by Fear The Mustache 08.25.10 @ 11:17 am

Pitt can reasonably win every game on their schedule. This is now 3 years in a row where you can make that argument. Time to turn can into reality.

Comment by Tony Cancilla 08.25.10 @ 11:29 am

…or at least win the Big East?

Comment by Tony Cancilla 08.25.10 @ 11:30 am

I’m not one who would normally calls the first game of the season a ‘must’ win…but in this case I think it is…for all the reasons Chas said above.
And also because of when it is played..everyone in college football will be watching since it is the first day of games and only a few other games of note being played. This game will set the tone for how Pitt (and the Big East) will be viewed by the rest of country the rest of the year.

Comment by milobloom 08.25.10 @ 11:36 am

I don’t think you should cast aside the Fiesta Bowl revenge.

For those of us who were actually there and experienced it, this game means more to mean than any other game on the schedule except for Miami.

Comment by BnG 08.25.10 @ 11:45 am

I’m really looking forward to this game and to hear your excitement for Pitt also makes it even bigger in my mind. This is a huge game for both teams and that’s why it will be special. The eyes of the nation will be watching and both teams want to set a tone for the rest of their season. Your new QB vs our new defensive secondary, Lewis vs Asiata/Wide…ahhh it’s going to be epic.

Comment by BigUte 08.25.10 @ 11:51 am

Agree that it’s important for us fans, Pitt’s national reputation, revenge on the Utes, etc. But it’s also important for the team’s emotions. With new starters in key positions and a tough BE road schedule, starting the season with a win on the road against a quality team would be a huge confidence builder. Getting their butts kicked or suffering a heartbreaker could turn a promising season South in a hurry.

Can’t wait for next week when the gut wrenching begins again.

Hail to PITT!

Comment by TampaT 08.25.10 @ 11:57 am

This is a huge game, it will set the tone for the entire season.

Comment by The Oakland Jew 08.25.10 @ 12:02 pm

The level of excitement and interest in the team was night and day comparing 2008 and 2009. I attribute most of this to the result of the first game. It would be hard for most people to get that excited to see an 0-1 Pitt team play New Hampshire.

Comment by Brian 08.25.10 @ 12:28 pm

Pitt just can’t shit the bed. Just show up against utah. Even if there is a loss.. a hard fought game..wouldn’t be too bad.

A blow out (ala fiesta bowl) would be the worst possible thing.

Comment by Snala The Panther 08.25.10 @ 12:35 pm

Its vital for Pitt to win all of its noncon games this year. We have to beat ..

1)Utah because the entire CFB world will be watching this week one Thurs.night game between ranked teams.
2)New Hampshire because losing to them is not an option.
3)Miami because I will always hate the the BE defectors.
4)Notre Dame because, well, just because.

Comment by Chuck Morris 08.25.10 @ 12:46 pm

Go ahead Chas! I like it! I’m ready, Let’s GO!!

Comment by Joe 08.25.10 @ 12:52 pm

I can’t believe that ESPN chose the Southern Miss/South Carolina game to open their season. Is Steve Spurrier really that much more intriguing than Pitt/Utah?

Comment by Chris 08.25.10 @ 1:04 pm

PS. Pitt 30 – Utah 17. Yeah I said it!

Comment by Chris 08.25.10 @ 1:07 pm

Chris- ESPN had no choice in the matter. The game is on VS because of a deal VS has to broadcast MWC games. I am sure next year’s contest will be on the “ESPN Family of Networks”

Incidentally, I am sure that Utah fans are thanking God that they can now get out from under the horrible MWC TV and “The Mtn.”

Comment by quaziemoto3 08.25.10 @ 1:26 pm

Didn’t know Versus does MWC games. That means a pro-Utah broadcasting crew, of course that’s nothing new when you’re a PITT man. We’re use to the broadcasters of whatever network being anti-PITT especially PITT football. Although I have noticed last year there must have been a memo sent around to call us PITT more instead of Pittsburgh.
And they made more of a point of noting our great players from the past. So maybe things are changing slightly on that front.
Agree with Chas, PITT needs to win this game to increase it’s national image and that of the BigEast. Maybe Dion, 40 plus times behind the Hynoceros will take us to the promised land.

Comment by carolinapanther 08.25.10 @ 3:17 pm

i was at the 2005 fiesta bowl as well. their fans weren’t scumbags like wvu fans but they definitely were annoying. reminded me of VA Tech fans. a bit hokey/hickish. i’ll be at the game next thursday. would love to see the panthers get a little payback!

Comment by wilk 08.25.10 @ 4:25 pm

Hoping for the best…Wannstedt really needs to be focused for this game…He is not a particularly strong opening day game coach..we will see.

Comment by TonyinHouston 08.25.10 @ 5:04 pm

Yeah the Utah fans were fine until the game started. Then, I saw a different side.

Comment by BnG 08.25.10 @ 5:25 pm

Don’t know if you guys have INSIDER, but Mel Kiper released his top 25 players.
Jon Baldwin is number 13, here’s what he wrote:

Analysis: Height, physical strength and ball skills are there; so is sub-4.5 speed. Goes up for the ball, will develop route-running skills.

Greg Romeus isn’t in the top 25.

Comment by Salgado 08.25.10 @ 5:51 pm

Chas, you’re getting us fired up. Keep it up!

Bottom line: this game is on Wanny.

Talent is there. Coordinators are in place. Yeah, a first year starting QB and a shakey middle, but the talent is gushing.

This is on Wanny. Pitt usually loses this game.
Wanny usually loses this game.

Hate to say it, but this is on Wanny.

We’re better than Utah across the board. They have home field and that horse sh*t offense, but that’s not going to stop us from winning this game. We know how to stop that garbage offense after 7 years against WVU. We have All Americans at most of the skill positions.

Time to go on the road and deliver, Wanny.

Comment by Pauly P 08.25.10 @ 7:09 pm

In this corner with the neutral gray trunks is Paul Zeise, the unemotional, objective non-Pitt alum beat writer … and in the other corner with the blue and gold glasses and representing all of Pitt fandom is our hero, Chas Rich … who we assume wrote this article without benefit of a Willoughby Brewing Company IPA (or 3 or 4).

Here is a viewpoint that has me a little concerned:

link to betvega.com

– Last season was a great one for the Utes as a host, as they went a perfect 6-0 and went 3-3 ATS. The problem is that they didn’t run across a team anywhere near as good as these Panthers are along the way. Pittsburgh struggled on the road though, losing games at West Virginia and NC State to account for two of its three losses. The recipe is ripe for a letdown by U-Pitt early in the season.

Utah already knows it is good enough to beat this program having done so with an impressive 35-7 beat down in the 2004 Fiesta Bowl. Look for the Utes to make the Mountain West proud, living up to the hype early in the season.

Pitt vs. Utah Week 1 Score Prediction: Utah 34 – Pittsburgh 21

Comment by Pittman 08.25.10 @ 9:36 pm

All good points Chas. Of course, a win out west is what every PITT fan wants to happen.

But – isn’t it strange that the two best season we have had in years, ’08 & ’09, both had an early season upset loss we had to deal with? And we did deal with them to run off a string of nice victories, including some tough games.

Personally I’m not that fired up about Utah and I think its a much harder game to win than some other PITT fans do – but then I think that this PITT team has some real question marks also. If the stars align and those question marks get answered early in the season I’ll be much more optimistic.

If wishes came true I’ll trade a win in this game for that all-important BE game down the road which will determine the BE champion… don’t know who it will be against but that game will be 10 times more important than this opener when the dust settles… because that one will get us into the BCS bowl.

Comment by Reed 08.26.10 @ 4:53 am

Pittman – if Utah puts up 34 points on us, with the players we have on defense this season, it will be a very long year.

Comment by Reed 08.26.10 @ 4:54 am

Now this is the kind of blog that I like responding to. Positive Pitt fans coming out of the woodwork! Tony Cancilla must have found the same bottle of coolaide that I’ve been drinking all of fall camp. Yes indeed, Pitt now has the horses to go undeated even with this tough schedule. Luck, lack of injuries are critical for success but playing with confidence and the emotional attitude that they CAN go out and assert their will on the opposing team is the critical component that this team needs to acquire this season for it to become reality. As I’ve commented before on this blog, at our meaningless bowl game last year, that come from behind victory by Pitt after two crushing losses that meant everything, showed me the character of this team. The celebration after that win by the players demonstrated to me that they had no quit in them and they were hungry for a victory. Pitt had a real bad taste of defeat in their mouths before that game and they could have easily mailed it in and lost that one too. No way, this team wants to win. Those two huge losses last year, in my opinion should serve as the coaching staff’s catalyst for getting this team’s head in the game right from the get go. I’ll be very surprised if they don’t show up for this “knife fight in a ditch” with a very big, sharp blade! And BTW I was at the Fiesta Bowl game too, that one hurt, they kicked our ass, yea, we want revenge against the Utes, and as BnG mentioned the Ute fans were not not that obnoxious, the thing that bothered me the most was the the way the Utah guys flaunted walking around the stadium with a wife under each arm, LOL. Maul the Mormons!! Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Dr. Tom 08.26.10 @ 7:25 am

Pittman – Just consider the source of the info. A betting site that makes money on you chosing wrong. Telling the great unwashed that Utah will win easily by 13 when the spread is only 3….well you know. Pitt wins, BETvega wins.
I wish the game was tonight, I don’t know if I can last another week!!! HTP!

Comment by Fear The Mustache 08.26.10 @ 8:07 am

I think everybody knows what the other person is thinking: “Can Dave finally begin to win the big games with all the stellar recruits?”. It is not a question who everyone is rooting for. Zeise is a reporter and, based on Wanny’s track record on game day, why would anybody (least of all a supposedly objective journalist)go out on a limb and predict more than 9 wins? I, like everydoby else, hope Dave forgets to take his stupid pill next Thursday. It is like the guy is some type of bipolar coach; on game day he turns into Gerry Faust. And, who rooted against him?
