Dixon Presser Today

Via ESPN’s Andy Katz’s Twitter:

News conference at Pitt this afternoon to announce coach Jamie Dixon — getting an extension. Not leaving for Oregon as expected.

And, exhale.

UPDATE (2:16): Press conference is set for 3:30 PM. Here’s the link to watch it stream live.

If anyone is feeling particularly masochistic, listen to local sports talk today in Pittsburgh to find out what anyone says in light of yesterday.

On three:

3…2…1… PHHHEEEEEWWWWWW

Comment by Bryan 03.31.10 @ 1:53 pm

Dixon needs to enroll in some communication courses at Pitt. Maybe then he could go head to head with Cal and Pitino for the elite recruits.

Comment by zakman 03.31.10 @ 1:56 pm

Looking back it seems that Dixon’s extra vagueness must have stemmed from ongoing contract extention negotiations with Pitt.

I’m pretty sure Dixon has gotten a few recruits over Pitino recently. And Cal recruits well because he breaks rules i.e., being the only coach to have 2 Final Fours taken away. Besides, I’d rather play byy the rules, consistently make the tournament and watch Wannamaker play for 4 years than see John Wall only play for one year at Pitt.

I can come in off the ledge now.

Comment by Fear The Mustache 03.31.10 @ 2:21 pm

Tuition just went up!……Glad I graduated.

Comment by Freebird 03.31.10 @ 2:23 pm

This is why I listen to people like Dokish and the Pantherlair. Both said Dixon wasn’t going anywhere days ago, but the actual media, who you would think would be more competent, made it sound like Dixon could be leaving. I’ll stick to the people who do this full-time rather than some columnists or Steelers beat writer who is slumming by doing a Pitt story.

Comment by Mark 03.31.10 @ 2:23 pm

Pitt is lucky to have two great coaches with integrity that do things the right way and win. Great to see them both get contract extensions the same week.

Comment by Coach Ditka 03.31.10 @ 2:30 pm

Mark Madden proven to be an idiot yet again.

Zakman,
The less like Pitino and Calipari Dixon is the better. The last thing we need is our coach doing waitresses in bathrooms at restuarants and paying players to come to school. No thanks.

A MUST-WATCH tonight, folks, especially for those like me who yearn another night or two of Pitt hoops:

In NYC, public television channel 13 @ 10 PM (and likely nationwide at that time as well):

“Dixon needs to enroll in some communication courses at Pitt. Maybe then he could go head to head with Cal and Pitino for the elite recruits.”

Zackman,
Rick Pitino’s 9-year record at Louisville (four of which was in an inferior conference):
Overall: 220W – 85L (.721)
Conference: 96 W – 46 L (.676)

Jamie’s 7-year record at Pitt:
Overall: 188W – 54L (.777)
Conference: 83W – 35L (.703)

Maybe Jamie can express himself well enough to give Pitino some pointers on how to recruit.

Tubby Smith and Minnesota just said they have had no contact with Oregon at all. This after AP and ESPN both ran a story that he was offered the job yesterday. This is getting ridiculous!

Hope JD stays on as planned.

Comment by Dan 72 03.31.10 @ 3:04 pm

This is fantastic news. Anyone who says otherwise in a goon.

Comment by Perry 03.31.10 @ 4:04 pm

YESSSSSSSS

Comment by Joe 03.31.10 @ 4:12 pm

Simply put, Steve Pederson is a fantastic AD. He is establishing Pitt as a destination job for coaches (vice a stepping stone).

Comment by HbgFrank 03.31.10 @ 4:33 pm

Mark Madden is a dolt.

Kovalev to the Pens!

Hats off to Pitt’s savy Athletic Director for acting forthrighty and relatively promptly in sighning two gifted head coaches in one week. Now, PERHAPS, the ill-informed bloggers will chase after other pseudo-stories to tickle their fancies. I always wondered what “sportsbuffs” did on off seasons. Now I know—they dream up unlikely rumors and perpetuate them. Have a blessed HOLY SEASON, ladies and gentlemen. George in Columbus

The whole episode could have been a calculated ploy to extract a hefty raise, hats off to him.

Comment by The Oakland Jew 03.31.10 @ 4:47 pm

He didn’t get a hefty raise. He got that big raise for seven years down the road, which means nothing because seven years from now that will be cheap.

Comment by Mark 03.31.10 @ 4:52 pm

I met coach Dixon at the airport in February. He stopped to talk when I recognized him, talked about the university, the team, and the high expectations he had for the team. he then asked me about experience with pitt, what I was doing, and chatted with me for nearly 15 min.

He is a great ambassador for the university. this is a great signing.

Comment by skn 03.31.10 @ 4:58 pm

He really is the perfect ambassador and if he could only get to the Final Four, he will be the perfect coach.

Comment by Mark 03.31.10 @ 5:03 pm

Mark,

Per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

“Terms of the deal were not disclosed, and Pederson would not say if Dixon’s salary will increase with the extension. Dixon was making more than $1.5 million in his previous deal, which ran through the 2015-16 season.”

Sounds like an extension with more money, translates to a “hefty” raise.

WOW looks like tution is really going up between Wanny and Dixon!!

Hopefully the next step is a BCS bowl bid and a final four apperance!

Comment by WLAT Radio and the Big Beat 03.31.10 @ 5:08 pm

There’s no way in hell that Pitt jacked his salary up 650k in one year. Be serious.

Comment by Mark 03.31.10 @ 5:18 pm

Hi Bigguy

Its ZakMan, not Zackman, and the point of my post was that Dixon is not a good communicator relative to his peers. It had nothing to do with his coaching ability. I am a huge Dixon supporter, but until he learns to talk a little smoother, he will continue to lose out on top recruits to the Pitino’s (and don’t kid yourself, before he slept with that waitress he did regularly out recruit Dixon) and the Jay Wrights, and the Roy Williamses, and the Bill Selfs, and the Jim Beheims, etc of the world. And haven’t we all been saying that having one or 2 more top recruits is all Pitt and Jamie need to finally break into the final 4?

Comment by zakman 03.31.10 @ 5:34 pm

And those of you who are rooting for WVU are crazy, because Dixon goes head to head with Huggins for recruits.
