NCAA 1st: Oakland-Pitt

Filed under: Basketball,liveblog,NCAA Tourney — Chas @ 12:28 pm

A feature on Gibbs in USA Today on how he has been one of the go-to guys for Pitt. For some reason it seems a surprise to reporters that Pitt wants to make a deep run. What? You think they were going to play a “happy to be here” card?

The game is scheduled for roughly 2:45. We will see if it goes that way.

If you need to break it out from the blog Click Here.

I’m here in Vegas–the only Pitt grad in my group–and they want to know: can Pitt cover the current line of 10, against Oakland?

Thoughts?

Lou-

Probably not best to ask a bunch of Pitt homers. Everyone fluctuates between pie-in-the-sky and the-sky-is-falling.

My only advice would be not to bet on the game yourself. I did it for an early non-con game last year (Siena I think), and when they won without covering it felt like a loss.

Comment by 85 03.19.10 @ 1:35 pm

Lou, I think they can and will cover. However, I’d heed 85’s advice here regarding your personal wagers.

HTP!!!

Sage advice guys…I NEVER bet on Pitt, for or against! (I’ll barely be able to watch it in a room full of people.)

Personally, I think Pitt will win, but not sure about the cover.

Let’s go PITT!

It’s March Madness so you never know. My advice is to flip a coin. And as 85 and JSS said, don’t bet yourself.

Regarding the spread, use the system to your advantage: check the opening line, if 10 is higher than what the opening line was, take Pitt, if it is lower, then bet Oakland or don’t bet at all

Regardless of who you bet on, the game under is looking very good after the first 5 minutes. Both teams look very tight. Pitt needs to set up a play or two. Oakland leads 6-3.

These Tick Tack Fouls are freaking ridiculous.

The Panthers settled and finished strong–over 20 points more than Oakland. Let’s hope this gives them some nice confidence going into the second round. Can Gil please put together two decent games in a row?

Which way did your buddies bet, Lou?

Today with Gibbs and Dixon in foul trouble, Brown mostly played the “3” position. Is he better when he starts the game in the 3 spot? Maybe he still feels more comfortable there.

Anyone know what time we play Sunday??

Comment by Dan 72 03.19.10 @ 7:59 pm

I believe Pitt is 11:11 am game on Sunday (local time)

Comment by Neddy 03.19.10 @ 8:10 pm

@Tampa–they took Pitt and gave the points, and were rewarded. Their rationale was that Oakland plays in a VERY weak conference, and consequently sucked. I like to think that Pitt had a solid game, and made Oakland suck even worse.

That’s my unprofessional opinion. BTW, had I bet on Pitt, I’m convinced I’d have cause another BE team to gout out in the first round!)

Considering that Brown spends most of his time on the perimeter, can it really be said that he ever plays the 4? It’s more like 3.5.

I know he’s only 6’6″, but does it seem like there might be opportunities at times to get him the ball in a post-up type position along the baseline, like they used to do with Young? Give him the choice to consider a turnaround, or, if he chooses, go face up? Just something to get him some more touches closer to the hoop and the opportunity to create, particularly early in the game. Feel like his first few shots are always 3 balls, and if he misses one or two, he never gets going, or he never even looks to shoot and ends up with a big freakin’ goose egg.

@Tampa-

My friend all went with Pitt, to cover. They largely thought that Oakland played in a lousy conference, and that made them a lousy team. I like to think Pitt forced them to play lousy.

Agree with Carmen, like to see Brown play lower and try some more spin moves along baseline — but he can drive pretty well too. Good character game for Pitt…stayed tough after slow start, hyped opponent, and bogus calls to impose their will. Loved their attacking the hoop and not settling for jumpers, and good disciplined D.

Lou,

I like your thinking better than your friends’. That could have easily been a tight game with the way the refs were calling it. Pitt adjusted well and turned it into a rout.

Regardless, your friends should be happy that they won money thanks to Pitt. Enjoy Vegas!

@Tampa, @All–

As the saying goes–good coaches win; GREAT coaches cover (the spread)

Bring on Xavier!
