LiveBlog: Escape to Big 11

The battle between the two Big East teams mentioned as most likely to take Big 11 blood money if they look East.

Senior day. Honoring Jermaine Dixon and Chase Adams.

Game time is 4:30 on ESPNFullCourt, FoxSports Pittsburgh, MASN, MSG+ (starting 30 minutes late) and BrightHouse.

On the line, finishing tied for 2d in the Big East with WVU and Villanova. To say nothing for grabbing the #2 seed in the Big East Tournament. A loss, drops Pitt to 4th in the Big East.

As usual. If you need the liveblog separated from the site, Click Here.

Otherwise, look down.

the 2 seed is extremely important…..because the 4 seed plays at 230 thursday and i gotta work…..

do it for all the working pitt grads out there boys!!! give us the 7PM start time!

A great and unexpected season for our Panthers. Everything after this is a bonus…congrats to Jamie and crew on the most special of seasons.

Let’s hope Pitt Football soon treats Rutgers the same way…as it should be.

Hail to Pitt!!

Comment by Dan 72 03.06.10 @ 6:46 pm

doubt very much if this embarrassing loss for RU will trump the B11’s desire to go after the NYC TV market … but it would have to be somewhat of a downer for the B11 fans. Obviously Pitt and Missouri would be more desireable based on on the court and on the field results

In what should be a surprise to no one that reads this blog, Dante Taylor has really improved. The last few games he has looked more aware and has played with more of a purpose. Those that doubted him and Coach Dixon’s ability to teach are going to be sorry next year when he is a force.

Syracuse 15-3 28-3
Pittsburgh 13-5 24-7
West Virginia 13-5 24-6
Villanova 13-5 24-6
Marquette 11-7 20-10
Louisville 11-7 20-11
Notre Dame 10-8 21-10
Georgetown 10-8 20-9
South Florida 9-9 19-11
Seton Hall 9-9 18-11

10 Big East teams finished .500 or better. South Florida might need to win one, maybe two games but they have a legitimate shot. Seton Hall has a ways to go but they have a chance as well. Some might say that the league was more dominant last season but one thing is for sure, it’s never been more competitive.

It will be fun to watch the first two rounds of the BET this year. Locking up the double bye now looks like a necessity with Dixon banged up a little. This gives him 5 days to rest his ankles, knees and elbows. Great season for Pitt basketball but it’s not over yet.

Comment by Panthoor 03.06.10 @ 9:30 pm

My vote for biggest disappointment of the season goes to UCONN, pretty obvious I think. Cincinnati was second but I didn’t like their team chemistry from the get go. Both will be better next season.

Hurts losing to Seton Hall and South Florida now. That cost us a regular season title and maybe landed both teams in the tourney? Fun season nonetheless. No regrets whatsoever.

….maybe losing to Indiana, a little bit.

Comment by Panthoor 03.06.10 @ 9:35 pm

USF and The Hall will have to possibly make the tourney finals to go dancing.

Their RPIs aren’t so great, and USF has plenty of bad losses to go with their two big wins against us and G-town (sorry, beating an overrated UConn team at home doesn’t count).

NIT looks like a safe bet for those squads.

I don’t even know how UConn was on the bubble today, they kind of suck. Oh, that’s right, they’re UConn and they have name recognition.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 03.06.10 @ 10:27 pm

Pitt was 1-1 vs. WVU and finished with the same conference record. What’s the tiebreaker that gives Pitt the higher seed in the conference tournament, just out of curiosity?

Comment by Jeff 03.06.10 @ 10:40 pm

On the other end of the spectrum, I think that Notre Dame played themselves right off the bubble and into the tourney with that nice string of good wins at the end of the year.

I think Georgetown belongs on the bubble, despite being ranked most of the season. Ever since their home loss to USF they’ve been mediocre at best. Just a feeble way to finish off a season.

But you and I both know they’re making the tourney either way.

I guess to summarize, I think ‘quette and Notre Dame should be in (has there been a hotter team the last few weeks in the Big East than the Irish?)

Georgetown will be in (based not on stuff that happened earlier in the year).

USF will need to make a huge BET run (possibly to the finals) to get in. They get Depaul in round 1, but I doubt that win will impress the committee too much. Maybe a 2nd win against the Hoyas in round 2 will, and then they’d get a really really good, but not invicible, WVU team. For every good win against Pitt or G-town, there were losses to other bubble teams like Notre Dame and Marquette, or worse yet, a loss to the Johnnies AT HOME recently. They’re a solid NIT team though.

Seton Hall is probably a little worse off than USF at this point. Not as many big wins as the Bulls, and they also lost to USF (and also lost to another bubble team in VaTech). They look like an NIT team. Once again, they play Rutgers again in the BET, and that win won’t impress anyone. Then they’d get the red hot Irish, and then us.

BTW, the announcer going on about Tim Frye today was hilarious!

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 03.06.10 @ 10:44 pm

I thought that I would get tickets and go into the City if Pitt got past the quarterfinal game. Both the semi and the final are 9:00 pm games. I think that I’ll watch both on the tube (er.. ah.. on the flat screen). A 9:00 pm start time for one of the semis makes sense, but since they scheduled the finals for the TV audience, count me in for being a member of the TV audience. (The BE, however, won’t be lacking for a live audience to fill MSG.)

Comment by BigGuy 03.06.10 @ 11:02 pm

What’s interesting about Georgetown is, when they played (and beat) Pitt, I kept thinking “wow, this is one team that Pitt just doesn’t have any answers for…” Every other team, I thought Pitt could beat, whether we did or not.

Comment by Lou 03.06.10 @ 11:29 pm

Pitt didn’t have an answer for Chris Wright going off for 27.

Comment by omar 03.06.10 @ 11:34 pm

I think whatever happens there will be at least 8 teams coming out of The Big East. True that USF and SH are a Mid-Major slip up in their tourney away from popping but stranger things have happened.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say we get 9. Dominique Jones might just will South Florida to a couple of wins and turn a head on that committee. One more win and it would be their 20th win of the season.

Seton Hall might get screwed again. Do they deserve to be in the tourney? Is finishing .500 in the best conference in college basketball history enough? I’m not sure but in my opinion they are not in right now. As I said, they have a ways to go.

I think VaTech is going to get in and so will Clemson and Wake Forest(kinda tough but most likely will) and all three will most likely lose in the first round. Would anyone look at the Clemson vs Wake game tomorrow as loser is out? If the ACC gets more than 6 then that’s wrong. I can’t wait to hear Dick Vitale’s excuses for UNC next Sunday. That might be worth recording on the old DVR.

I’m a little interested in how many the Pac-10 get. 3 at most maybe unless someone gets hot and wins that tourney. You know that could happen. That conference is one hot mess. Where are those awesome UCLA fans that talked smack after we lost to them in the tourney that year?

It’s still up for grabs. Speculation is fun right now but it’s basically just getting your thoughts out at this point. I have a feeling a Mid-Major with a three-point shooting future lawyer on it’s team will make somebody cry next Sunday. I’m making popcorn to see that.

Comment by Panthoor 03.06.10 @ 11:55 pm

we will play on Thursday either Providence, Seton Hall or ND … 3 teams we struggled with …. plus it is Gilbert’s turn to stink.

Comment by wbb 03.07.10 @ 7:46 am

Woodall and Taylor had good performances against Rutgers, maybe we won’t need him til friday.

Comment by shadyforpresident 03.07.10 @ 9:03 am

Jeff – we finished in a 3-way tie with nova and wvu…we were 2-1 vs those 2 teams, WVU was 2-2 and nova was 1-2…thats the reason for the seedings…….

Comment by schoey 03.07.10 @ 9:25 am

Thanks, schoey.

Comment by Jeff 03.07.10 @ 10:54 am

The ESPN article on the game had Jermaine Dixon saying the ankle was fine and that keeping him out was just a precautionary measure.

Personally, don’t really care if he doesn’t play in the BET. Would rather rest him and keep him healthy for the big dance.

Comment by Carmen 03.07.10 @ 11:14 am

Yeah, but USF’s 20th win would be against Depaul (and they WILL get it). In other words “zzzzzz….” They lost against too many other bubble teams and/or bad teams to get the nod IMO. And it wasn’t just early in the year, they lost to SJU about a week or two ago and ND and Marquette after they had their nice 5 game run.

They need to win 2 to even be back on the bubble, and even then, they’d be on the wrong side of it.

SJU needs to win the whole thing. They’re just not that good.

“Personally, don’t really care if he doesn’t play in the BET. Would rather rest him and keep him healthy for the big dance.”

Interesting comment, Carmen. I question whether this team is capable of making it to the Final Four, so let’s set making it to the Elite Eight as a great accomplishment. Your choice:

Losing the first game in the BE Tourney but making it to the Elite Eight?

Winning the BE Tourney but getting beat in the first game of the NCAA tourney?

Comment by BigGuy 03.07.10 @ 12:07 pm

Panthoor: The PAC 10 gets only one, unless someone other than Cal wins the tourney. Then, it’s only two tops, unless the committee “feels” it would be heresy to have a traditional power conference represented by only 2 teams. But, they did it to the SEC last year.

Even though I’d like ot see it, I also doubt they take 9 from the BE, so USF likely ends up on the outside unless they win it all. Even with the UConn win, their RPI will be outside the top 64 (~67). So is they’re Pomeroy rating (75).

Same goes for anyone below the top 8 in the conference. Seton Hall has the best chance of sneaking in with a good performance and a poor one by ND in the BE tourney. They’re both 6-4 in the past 10 and Seton Hall won the head-to-head. However, ND’s more recent streak still might put them in anyway.

Jimbo C…: Interesting take on Georgetown. Just think their RPI and SOS (#1) will keep them in it, but you never know. ND’s recent play and the Harangody factor could trump if it comes down to those two as the last team in (assuming someone outside the top 8 wins the BE tourney). RPI and SOS (#2) is also why UConn hung in among the 64 for so long.

All speculation on my part, but that’s what makes this time of year so fun. Pitt’s a lock looking like no worse than a 3 seed. That’s really all I care about.

Comment by TampaT 03.07.10 @ 12:47 pm

Isn’t the head of the committee a Pac-10 guy? He’s going to push for more than one from the Pac-10. It wouldn’t be fair of course but his influence might doom a more deserving team.

I’m speculating here as well and going through some scenarios in my head. Maybe some wishful thinking on my part with a splash of Big East pride. But, things could very well change this week. My opinion(and it doesn’t matter much to the NCAA suits) is that if you are a competitive school in the best league then you should be considered. USF and SH could very well fall short but they should be given a hard look, specially USF.

This week should be a lot of fun. The rise and fall of hope smells like Madison Square Garden. I have been there many times and that place can make anyone play like a champion on any given day. Unless of course, you are St. Johns.

Comment by Panthoor 03.07.10 @ 1:25 pm

Mike Slive, the SEC commish, was the chair last year. Didn’t help them.

I do really hope the BE gets 9. Would love to see USF get in. As you can tell by my handle, I live in Tampa. Root for USF except when it matters to Pitt. It would do good for the rest of the conference to have someone new rise from the ashes. I just doubt they’ll give us that many.

Also want to correct my statement about Pitt. I meant they’re a lock for the tourney and looking like a 3 seed right now. Tourney could change that +/- one spot.

Comment by TampaT 03.07.10 @ 1:38 pm

TampaT – Pitt’s RPI probably won’t change much this week, so they’ll probably stay in the #3 range based on that measurement. The interesting thing is that the more subjective rankings (e.g., polls, eye-test, etc.) have consistently placed Pitt well below their RPI for the last 6 weeks or so, and Pomeroy almost always has Pitt considerably lower than their RPI. It will be interesting to see how this plays out next weekend.

Pure guess on my part, but if Pitt loses on Thursday night, I think they get a 4 or 5 seed; if they lose on Friday or Saturday, a 3 seed; if they win the BE Tourney, an outside shot at a 2 seed.

Comment by Pantherman13 03.07.10 @ 2:18 pm

Pretty much in agreement with you, Pantherman13. I could also see them dropping one spot if they lose ugly on Friday. It will take the BE finals and some early exits in other conference tourneys for us to even smell a 2 seed.

It’s the subjective ratings that worry me the most. Afraid that if the committee members have long memories, they’ll look a the Pomeroy and recall those past high seeded Pitt teams (2s and 3s that were good defensively and mediocre offensively) getting bounced from the tourney early, and put us at a #5.

Would really hate to see that, because this team sets up pretty well for the famous 12 over 5 upset. I’d be a wreck from the selection show until the end of the first round game.

Comment by TampaT 03.07.10 @ 2:37 pm

BigGuy, it’s not even close. I’d rather see Pitt FORFEIT their first BE Tourney game and make it to the Elite Eight. Winning the BE Tournament is overrated anymore, especially since Pitt has a couple championships under their belt in the past few years. I think Pitt’s emphasis on doing well in the BET has hurt them more than helped them in the NCAA Tournament.

Comment by Lou 03.07.10 @ 3:57 pm

Pitt was never really bounced “early” when they were seeded #3 or higher. They made it to the sweet 16 each time. They lost the first year to Kent State (bad loss), the next year to Marquette in Minneapolis, the third year to Ok. State (higher seed), and the fourth to UCLA (higher seed) in California.

Comment by omar 03.07.10 @ 4:56 pm

“Personally, don’t really care if he doesn’t play in the BET. Would rather rest him and keep him healthy for the big dance.”

Lou, my perspective is different. I would rather see Pitt be a champion in something rather than an also ran in something else. I am going to do a search on the Internet to try to determine what has the most hits: the list of BE champions over the past 10 years or the list of teams that were members of the Elite Eight over the last 10 years.

Comment by BigGuy 03.07.10 @ 5:23 pm

Omar, If you’re a 2 you’re projected as one of the best 8 teams in the tourney. A Sweet 16 exit is bounced early. If you’re a 3, you’re one of the best 12 and expected to get to the Elite 8 occasionally. That’s why until last year our Sweet 16 exits were labeled as disappointing tourney performance by some and why the program wasn’t given “elite” status. Don’t think last year carried that label because of the way we lost to an opponent that knew us well.
