A fun, fun, fun day of post-holiday cleaning and snow shoveling. Wheeeeee.

It’s the DePaul Blue Demons coming to the Pete to play Pitt on Monday night on ESPN—–U. To kick off the start of Big East play for Pitt. True Big Monday games don’t start until the Mouse Monopoly runs out of MNF NFL games.

Consider this the warm-up,

Liveblog around 7pm.

If you need to break it out Click Here.

Otherwise, right below.

Second media timeout, Pitt is up 3. The full court press is really bothering Pitt, and has also increased the tempo to a level Syracuse wants. Brown just picked up his 4th foul on a moving pick – this could be a real problem. Pitt needs to try to re-establish the slower pace – even when they break the press, unless they have a layup, they need to bring it out an run clock.

I can’t get ESPN 360 to work, event hough I’m supposed to have it!

Are we really up by 13, or is that an old score?

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 01.02.10 @ 1:42 pm

Third media timeout (under 8 minutes), Pitt up 11. They are doing better against the press, finding the open outlet. Just missed a chance to go up 16 when Dixon missed an open 3, but they are playing very tough. Taylor is playing a solid game so far. Brown is out with 4 fouls, but so is Onaku for Syracuse. Fouls are starting to pile up.

Comment by Pantherman13 01.02.10 @ 1:43 pm

Wes Johnson just picked up his 4th foul.

This is unreal. Un. Real.

Comment by merlin 01.02.10 @ 1:55 pm

Last media timeout, Pitt up 12…now 11, as Johnson completes 3 point play. Gotta hit free throws…

Comment by Pantherman13 01.02.10 @ 1:57 pm

Genuinely impressed. We’ve showed a ton of resilience, patience on offense, and composure when Syracuse has made runs. I didn’t think we were near this point yet.

Comment by Chris S 01.02.10 @ 2:02 pm

Unbelievable!

Hail to Pitt!

Happy New Year Pitt fans from the BB Team. Jamie Dixon for Pope! Typical Syracuse team…you take em out of 1 on 1 NBA BBall and they fall apart.
Really, really impressed w. Pitt’s Defense and Gibb’s shooting. He may end up the best shooting guard ever at Pitt. What an exciting and exhilerating game to watch. A coache’s clinic.
Hail to Pitt….

Comment by Dan 72 01.02.10 @ 2:15 pm

Guess this team isn’t so bad after all…

I don’t know if a young team can maintain this type of effort and focus every game, but for now, this is a really nice win.

Comment by Pantherman13 01.02.10 @ 2:15 pm

again the, the lack of discipline of Boeheim’s team shows … even with 6 minutes left, they start throwing up the 1st shot from the perimeter forgetting their big inside advantage.

I am proud to admit that I was wrong thinking that Pitt had very little chance of winning .. this team has grown quite a bit the past 2 weeks but it is still going to be a grind.

Comment by wbb 01.02.10 @ 2:20 pm

That’s the one we needed if we want to play in the REAL tournament in March.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 01.02.10 @ 2:23 pm

The box score says that McGhee didn’t have any rebounds. Suddenly, I am no longer lobbying for Jamie to play McGhee and Taylor at the same time. I see one star in the sky rising while another seems to be fading.

Comment by BigGuy 01.02.10 @ 2:24 pm

just heard that Pitt had 19 assists on 23 FG. Coach also made a point saying that Pitt got just about every loose ball.

Comment by wbb 01.02.10 @ 2:27 pm

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Good start today….PITT just played “Survivor” hoops today–they outplayed, outlasted, and outsmarted Syracuse!

A true team Win!

Hail to PITT!

As usual, hugh green is negative and wrong.

Omar, be nice! It’s the start of a new year.

Comment by BigGuy 01.02.10 @ 2:39 pm

BTW, does anyone have inside information on the whereabouts of Chas? He’s under the weather? He’s trying to appease his wife by not spending his free time maintaining this blog? He’s been in transit for most of this week? Dunno?

Comment by BigGuy 01.02.10 @ 2:46 pm

Total team effort. Great D, super passing, energy, hustle, everyone contributed. Gibbs shot lights out, Taylor is figuring it out. The bench is deep.

Let’s not lose our heads, no one will overlook us again, but this is going to be fun for a rebuilding year.

Comment by gc 01.02.10 @ 2:46 pm

What a building block for a young team… shows that hard work, tough d and scrappy play can keep you in the game with anyone. That’s a lesson that all Pitt teams need at one point, and something that will keep this program relevant. It’s amazing that Howland/Dixon managed to keep that so consistent in their years. HTP!

Comment by Mike 01.02.10 @ 2:48 pm

Omar, Couldn’t agree more on SmallGreen.
We saw a team get better before our eyes today. First ten minutes were ugly, but we saw them slowly get comfortable and begin to execute on both ends of the court. We still have a ways to go, but the more the starting five play together the better they will get. Brown is coming around and dante taylor stepped it up today.

Gibbs is amazing. He now owns the Pitt consecutive FT record at 37 and counting.

Hail to Pitt

Comment by TMGPanther 01.02.10 @ 2:51 pm

This team is still going to lose it’s share of games, but they showed today that if you don’t play hard and good against them, they WILL beat you because they WILL play hard.

Comment by Mark 01.02.10 @ 2:51 pm

Not shocked at all by this win… Boeheim is our bitch once again. As I have said for weeks…judge this team on its full compliment of players. No reason why we can’t go .500 in BE play.

Comment by Pauly P 01.02.10 @ 3:07 pm

Great win! This should get some attention!

Comment by Pitt It Is 01.02.10 @ 3:15 pm

another interesting stat according to CBSsports.com … McGhee had 0 rebounds. Gibbs & Taylor led with 8, Pitt hit 26 of 36 FT.

Comment by wbb 01.02.10 @ 3:31 pm

They had all the Big East Conference players, we had the better coach. What’s that remind you of?

Comment by alcofan 01.02.10 @ 4:13 pm

Pitt has good players. Jermaine Dixon is an excellent guard. Gibbs is a scorer. Wanny is playing great but for the turnvors. Woodall made a big shot and had a nice block. Taylor was dominant at times today. These kids can play. They have enough talent to make the tournament. Maybe even easily. Cinci will be a tough game on a two day turnaround. Pitt will be a tough out. One stinker in 14 games against Indiana, but these kids are starting to figure things out especially on the defensive end.

Comment by omar 01.02.10 @ 4:53 pm

Great win today. My opinion on the good: Taylor will get better each game – a huge upside. Gibbs was great. Not only shooting , but handling the ball. My opinion on the bad: Wannemaker gets too many minutes – has worse hands than Ike Taylor. Was a little disappointing to see Woodall sort of blow Dixon off when he was trying to talk to him. You’d hope the coach would demand a little more respect, especially from a freshman.

Comment by Z-boy 01.02.10 @ 5:03 pm

don’t worry about woodall blowing off dixon.. he will keep him on the bench if he needs too.

Comment by snala the panther 01.02.10 @ 5:09 pm

All those years we hated Nova, Marquette, WVA (oldWVA) et al because they could run the floor and outscore everyone…well, we have become them!

Comment by Dan 72 01.02.10 @ 5:20 pm

I was absolutely wrong about today. (And man enough to admit it, which is more than I can say for some well-known posters whose positivity has been proved naive year after year….)

amazing win today…………dixon was definitely getting more out his crew than Boeheim did out of his roster of better players.

Boeheim amazes me……..how can a team as long as his let Gibbs get off double-digit open treys? sometimes I think he just brings in great players and all he does is roll the balls out.

Great effort by Jermaine Dixon on D. I won’t count on him hitting three-pointers much, but his all-around effort including the boards was the key.

Taylor even showed up; they were better when he was in there and he was pretty active. He has a long way to go in terms of body-position defense, but at least he can rebound and block some shots at this point in this career. And that baseline jump shot was a surprise.

Boeheim needs to pull Scoop and Brandon aside and explain that Johnson and Joseph need to get the ball in places where they have mismatches. Total lack of coaching.

Definitely gives the panthers some confidence going in to the next 4 games.

You can absolutely still count me as a skeptic on this squad, but I’ll be rooting hard for them to somehow pull out 9 or 10 BE wins and make the tournament.

Comment by hugh green 01.02.10 @ 6:48 pm

I wish I could have watched this game. My job is getting in the way of my life long dream of doing nothing. This team might be a pain in the arse all season. Monday should be interesting.

Comment by Panthoor 01.02.10 @ 7:28 pm

Yeah, the positivism has really been misplaced. 8 straight NCAA berths. Two Big East conference tournament championships. 7 Big East tournament finals. 5 sweet sixteens. 1 elite eight. 3 NBA players. 20 win season after 20 win season. 12 wins in a reloading year in 14 attempts. Yeah, what is there to be positive about? I’m crazy.

Comment by omar 01.02.10 @ 9:30 pm

Keep it real, Omar. Love it!

I am really liking the maturation process of this team. They are learning from their coach, and applying team principles that will translate to good quality wins. Like Jamie said early on, when he challenges this team…they respond.

Case in point– guard rebounding.

What I liked about this game was how our guards were rebounding and challenging after Jamie made it a point to focus on this in practive. Interesting comments from Boeheim afterwards that Pitt was the more physical team and how the guards outworked them on the glass….

I am still very skeptical on Tre, though. I hope he turns the corner soon.

Comment by Pauly P 01.02.10 @ 10:14 pm

The results are strong, undeniably. You’ve heard from me repeatedly that I love having a solid program in terms of the way it’s run and consistent results. In fact, I’d take this kind of success forever and skip the Final 4s and the one-or-two-and-done players you often need to get there.

My guess is we won’t hear much from you after a few losses pile up this year. That’s kind of the way it is with being on the bandwagon. Or if we do it will be in terms of how great next yr will be with the addition of a couple freshmen.

Hang in for the long term, Omar. The ghosts of Willard and Evans and Jaime Peterson and Brock Generalovich are calling you.

Comment by hugh green 01.03.10 @ 10:41 am

Did I disappear after the Indiana game? Or the heartwrenching Villanova loss? Or after the disappointing losses in the sweet 16? Jamie Dixon will always put a team that plays hard on the floor. That’s all I care about. Don’t worry about me. Try looking at the glass as half full once in a while. It’s not so bad.

Comment by Omar 01.03.10 @ 11:13 am

It’s been fun and easy to be a fan these last several years, but plenty of Pitt hoops supporters have been around for much longer in what’s not exactly a basketball-crazed town. We’ve taken our lumps (and had our good days) and we’re enjoying the current run as much as anyone and I was definitely enjoying what was in my cup in the TD Banknorth Center last spring……well, until Scottie Reynolds dumped it.

We just know to enjoy it while it lasts……

Comment by hugh green 01.03.10 @ 11:38 am

I know what you mean, Brock Generalovich was my neighbor growing up in Hermitage.
