Last Minute LiveBlog: Kent St.-Pitt

It has been a bad 2 week stretch for Pittsburgh versus Ohio. Not since the Penguins beat Columbus in a shootout at the end of October has there been a win. It’s a bad streak at the moment. (Even for those of us who are not Steelers fans.)

Hopefully Pitt can end it against the Kent State Golden Flashes.

Offline stuff has been a bit hectic this week, so this is last minute. Gametime at 2pm on ESPNU.

You can break out the live blog by Clicking Here.

Or play right below.

Hmmm. My computer says that Seton Hall has scored over 100 points with still about 11 minutes to play. Their guard has made 12 three’s (out of 15 shots) so far. Herb Pope is scoring a lot of points for them this year.

Comment by BigGuy 12.12.09 @ 1:26 pm

what is it about these Philly guys and turnovers? I don’t mean to be too critical of Nasir Robinson since he plays hard ad is out of position as a 6’5 PF … but this team is in trouble with him getting so many minutes.

Note that Dorin Dickerson has just been voted to first team All-American by the Football Writers Association

Comment by wbb 12.12.09 @ 4:43 pm

Dickerson was adamant that he did not want to be redshirted. He could have been eligible to play another year, but probably would have left anyway for the NFL. Obviously, he will be a big loss for Pitt.

Comment by BigGuy 12.12.09 @ 5:08 pm

I fully expect both TEs to be drafted this year although Dickerson will be used an H-back in the NFL

FR Mike Cruz has gotten in quite a bit this year as a blocking TE, and has caught a few passes. Also, Andrew Devlin who played as a frosh at Virginia, has transferred here and will be eligible next year.

Shooting well solves alot of problems. Nas even hit a 12 footer.

Comment by alcofan 12.13.09 @ 11:11 am

If only Wanamaker could shoot like that consistently…….but that’s not going to happen, not with his elbow out on the release.

It took until about 6 mins left in the first half before Pitt got the ball into the high post against the zone. They had guys flashing open just inside the foul line all day and the ball just doesn’t go in there. Pitt’s going to stink against zones and the best way to beat that defense is to dump it in the middle and hit 10 footers or toss it back out when everybody collapses. Sometimes I’m just not sure if anybody on the bench can coach offense…..

Comment by hugh green 12.13.09 @ 4:25 pm

There was another roundball game on Saturday. Pitt’s previously undefeated women’s team lost a heartbreaker to the Nittany Lions at State College. Congratulations to the Staters, but three rousing cheers to Coach Agnes Berendato of Pitt for her accurate and articulate commentary about Penn States not wanting to play the Panthers next year and their reluctance to engage Pitt on a home and home basis. Right on coach. Seems the Lady Lions have been well schooled by Joe Pa who also has been shy about playing Pitt (and others) on a reciprocal basis. What is it with THOSE people up there? Penn State is further diminished in my eyes by their narrow vision. George from Columbus

Hugh, I think that the problem may be that we don’t seem to have a post player who can consistently catch a pass. Basic stuff that we really need to work on.

Comment by HbgFrank 12.13.09 @ 8:52 pm

face it – out starting frontcourt would not start for any other BE team. They play hard and would be real good players off the bench, and maybe McGhee could start along side of a really good PF, however, Robinson is out of position and neither are adept at finishing.

Robinson will not be a starter next year and McGhee will see less minutes.

Comment by wbb 12.13.09 @ 9:50 pm

Robinson will return to coming off the bench once Gilbert is back. Watching him try those spin moves in the paint and turn it over is extremely frustrating, as is watching good passes bounce of McGhee’s hands. Nevertheless, teams are going to use a zone and this team has to improve on getting the ball to the man in the paint and post. The only way Taylor is going to progress and get confidence is if he gets opportunities with the ball in scoring position. Then again, he has to catch the ball first.

Wannamaker’s inconsistency aside, he and Gibbs have been our most consistent scoring presence and I feel like Wannamaker is the one guy who is showing the most consistent leadership. Nice to see Jermaine Dixon make some contributions.

Saw the highlights of the Temple/’Nova game. Wow can that dude from Temple shoot!

Comment by Carmen 12.14.09 @ 9:10 am

The entry passes to the post are indeed frustrating to watch at times. The guards are clearly not comfortable making these passes, oftentimes hesitating, which allows the defense to “catch-up”. They also tend to throw bounce passes at the players’ feet, which are almost impossible to catch (note, they do this on the perimeter as well). On the other side, McGhee simply has bad hands and has difficulty catching the ball cleanly. Even when he does catch it, he tends to bring it down to gather himself, giving the defense an opportunity to knock it away. Taylor is better at catching the ball, but he struggles getting his body in a position to do anything with it once he has it. He does draw fouls, but he needs to learn how to finish with his back to the hoop.

I’m betting that the lineup is far from set at this point – Dixon will work his way back into the starting lineup, and hopefully Brown will as well. Coach Dixon has acknowledged that both Robinson and Gibbs are getting too many minutes (out of necessity) right now, and both should see their minutes decline. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Taylor takes over the starting center job by the end of January, or at least is playing the majority of minutes.

Comment by Pantherman13 12.14.09 @ 9:37 am

Alot of low passes to McGhee. Throw it high to the big man.

Comment by alcofan 12.14.09 @ 11:31 am

ken pomeroy has his season prediction up. predicts 19-12 and 8-10 in the big east. this seems like an accurate prediction right now. hopefully adding gilbert brown back will give us an extra win or two and help us sneak into the tournament at 9-9 or 10-8 in the big east.

Comment by Omar 12.14.09 @ 11:46 am

Sagarin ratings currently predicts Pitt to finish 17-14 (6-12 BE). That reflects the performance of the current squad without Dixon and Brown so, hopefully, things won’t be that bad. If you look at Sagarin’s numbers, Pitt needs to become about 5-6 points better per game to predict around 10-8 or 9-9 in BE and get to 20-21 wins. Can Dixon and Brown plus maturation improvement of the young guys provide that much more and soon enough to matter for this season? Possibly, I suppose, but it’s far from a certainty.

Comment by pitt1972 12.14.09 @ 1:14 pm

I give Mcghee credit for coming into the season in shape.

But all of the working out in the world isn’t going to increase that guy’s coordination and athleticism.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 12.14.09 @ 2:55 pm

Give me one finisher, and we win 9 games in the BE. Jamie’s offense (or lack thereof) is reliant upon having finishers to clean up on the Offensive Rebounding side. If we are not finsihing off of OR, then we are going to rise as high as our guard play & level of competition dictates.

Comment by Pauly P 12.14.09 @ 3:18 pm

I also give McGhee credit for playing hard – whatever criticism he gets and/or deserves, effort does not appear to be an issue. But as Jimbo might say, all the effort in the world isn’t going to make his hands any softer.

Comment by Pantherman13 12.14.09 @ 3:18 pm

The point about the low passes is a good one. No small thing, particularly with McGhee. Can’t fault the effort, but the hands are just so hard.

Comment by Carmen 12.14.09 @ 3:41 pm

What is most infuriating about our inability to beat the zone so far this year is we have a certified 3-pt threat in Gibbs, yet can’t seem to get him open.

Jamie Dixon has always had a forward (chevy/taft, kendall, young) who could not only catch the ball in the high post, but was able to force the defense to colapse which would then free up the guards for the trifecta.

This year, we don’t have a big guy with a) good hands, b)a mid-range jumper to keep the zone defenders honest or c) the passing ability to find the guard out of a double team. Unless we can find a player to fill that void on the high post, Gibbs is useless.

Comment by pablo 12.14.09 @ 4:52 pm

Turning to football for a sec, Mark Myers, incoming QB, is rated by Rivals as being top five in arm strength:

This will be refreshing. I’ve always thought that, minimally, a QB has to have the ability to throw long.

Comment by steve 12.14.09 @ 5:07 pm

Pablo – I think the hope is that Gil Brown will partially fill the role you describe, both by receiving passes into the high post and by penetrating to the high post. Keep in mind that you can also dribble penetrate to the high post, and both Dixon and Brown should be able to do this better than the guards currently playing.

Robinson has shown flashes of effectiveness in the high post – he has good enough hands to catch the ball, and can be a good passer from that position, but his shot is erratic at best, and too often he either brings the ball down to the defender or tries to dribble. Taylor should get better in the high post, but right now his decision-making process, while improved, is too slow.

Comment by Pantherman13 12.14.09 @ 5:35 pm

Robinson like his Phill-area teammate has become a turnover machine — both think they have better hndles than they do. Robinson has shown that he cannot shoot from long range nor can he penetrate in traffic … he is not a 4. Iknow he, like McGhee give agreat deal of effort but this plus the fact there is not much competition are the only reasons they are starting.

Comment by wbb 12.14.09 @ 7:27 pm

Why did Dwight Miller not play much at all this game? He looked 50x better than Nasir vs. Indiana and b/c of his ability to shoot the ball he needs to see more time than him. Sure Nas had like 12 pts I believe but how many turnovers? He travels at least twice a game and I don’t see how Miller doesn’t get more minutes.

Comment by OntarioLett'sGoPitt 12.14.09 @ 7:59 pm

I had heard that some type of bug had been making its way through the Pitt team at the end of last week, with the result that a handful of players did not practice. I can’t remember if Miller was one of them, but Dixon has said in the past that Miller’s main problem has been that he has missed so much practice time to injury and illness. Also, for all of the folks who want Robinson benched, keep in mind that he does rebound, which is something Miller has struggled with so far.

Comment by Pantherman13 12.14.09 @ 8:50 pm

Nasir and Wanna need to slow down on offensive. Miller on the other hand just doesn’t look like much of a baller. Yea he has a nice looking shot but that’s about the extent of his skillset. At this point, Wanna and Gibbs are the only guys producing. It’s just not enough though. It’s scary when Wanna is one of the best players on this team. In any case, I’d really like to see more of JJ Richardson and Talib Zanna.

Comment by MoE 12.14.09 @ 9:01 pm

Not sure what would make you want to see more of Zanna, he hardly played and looks like he needs time to most certainly red shirt and learn the system as well as develop. And I disagree that all Miller seems to have is a shot. In fact he played pretty darn well on D against Indiana, I remember a nice blocked shot also. I do agree however on Richardson. He has impressed vs. both Texas and Indiana, yet those seem to be his only minutes.

Comment by OntarioLett'sGoPitt 12.14.09 @ 10:38 pm

I saw Zanna a couple of times in the summer league and he certainly has some moves and athleticism .. but he needs to improve his upper body strength and is still pretty raw. I thought at the time that he was a redshirt candidate – remember he started playing late and has played in the US only a couple of years. On the other hand, he gives every indication that he will be a very good player after another year or so, and appears to be very coachable.

You have to understand just how inexperienced evryone is at the 4 and 5. This team may get much better by Feb but it will take its lumps over the next 6 weeks or so.

BTW, I saw L stevens-howling get tackled by S McKillop, and a short time later L Fitz get tackled by S Spencer who also was flagged for a facemask. Andy Lee remains one of the better punters.

Congrats to Dion Lewis for being named 2nd team AP All-American. Dorin Dickerson is 3rd team behind Hernandez (Florida) and Pitta (BYU)

Interesting development regarding the Big Ten, which apparently is now openly looking at the possibility of expansion.

link to sports.espn.go.com

Everyone assumes their primary target will be Notre Dame, and that Notre Dame would again rebuff them because it makes too much money as an independent. I’m not sure Notre Dame is such a good fit in terms of non-athletic considerations (which seem to be important to the Big Ten). The Big East would seem to be a prime target again – you have to think the conference is more prepared to defend itself this time around…although I have to admit, if they came calling to Pitt, it would be hard to turn it down.
