Brand. Spend. Consume.

New gear has arrived.

nikepittgear

The press release (at least at the moment) has no pictures of the new football uniforms or any of the new unis for any sports.

“We are excited about our new partnership with NIKE,” Pederson said. “Most importantly, our student-athletes are thrilled to be wearing the NIKE brand. We are anxious to have our fans see the new lines of NIKE Pitt products as well.”

“The University of Pittsburgh is an outstanding institution with a rich sports heritage,” NIKE director of college sports marketing Kit Morris said. “NIKE is excited to become the official supplier of athletic footwear, apparel and equipment for the Panthers, and we especially look forward to outfitting all of Pitt’s student-athletes and coaches from its 19 sports programs.”

Given the Pitt store’s propensity to sell old gear forever (really? still selling an “iron bar” Pitt logo hat?) rather than eventually just ship it to a 3d world country to avoid confusion, count on being able to get older Adidas stuff for several more years.

Nike is doing the throwback gear. Just it now has a swoosh right in the front of the shirt rather than on the sleeve as Adidas did. That Nike subtlety.

Looks like you get a little bit of a teaser of the new jerseys on the main page.

And that “iron bar” hat? Wow…that’s got to be about five or six years old now.

New Uniforms? I need to collect my thoughts?

Comment by Jason 08.10.09 @ 12:32 pm

Where’s the freaking helmets?

Comment by Pauly P 08.10.09 @ 12:39 pm

They look cool. Now, let’s play ball!

Comment by ChrisA 08.10.09 @ 12:42 pm

The pants have the old style large blue stripe outlined in white – which gives hope that the helmets will follow the same pattern.

Comment by mark 08.10.09 @ 12:43 pm

I guess Nike does what Nike wants to do, but I don’t get the idea of shrinking the wordmark down to such ridiculously small type on the jerseys. I’ve seen this on other Nike jerseys as well, and it almost looks out of place.

From that photo on WTAE’s website, it’s really kind of tough to see exactly what the gold color looks like, but it looks like they’ve flattened it out quite a bit…almost similar to what Georgia Tech did with theirs.

Yeah, I like them….very understated and simple, kind of a classic look to them.

Kind of refreshing to see, especially when you look at the vertigo-inducing crap that Louisville just rolled out…

unis look ok, i wonder if they will have blue pants or a 3rd jersey? Anyone know when they will offically show them all?

Comment by mike 08.10.09 @ 1:21 pm

After looking at stirpey’s closeup, I am shocked and angry. I was given a Starter Pitt jersey from Wal-Mart for a b-day gift last year that was the exact same thing as this. Last two year’s jerseys weren’t great but they weren’t bad. Nike has removed all creativity from the numbers and made them solid gold. The Pitt is so small on v-neck that it can barely be seen. All Nike football jerseys usually have the same last name font (Florida, FSU, ASU, Mizzou, UNC) which also takes away uniqueness and creativity. Hopefully that doesn’t happen to us. I really hope the helmets change or have something that make this uniform change somewhat acceptable.

Comment by AJ 08.10.09 @ 1:24 pm

Just took a look at the picture that Jason provided. I am a jersey collector. I usually buy fifty jerseys a year. I will not purchase this one. We look like a poor high school team.

I will continue to wear my YSU game worn Shane Murray script throwback to games as a protest to Nike’s either lack of care in design or creativity.

Comment by AJ 08.10.09 @ 1:28 pm

I don’t care what the jerseys look like. Win 10 games.

Comment by j. peasy 08.10.09 @ 1:40 pm

They look like imitation Notre Dame jerseys..

Comment by FourSnow 08.10.09 @ 2:11 pm

no more Vegas gold I suppose

Comment by TonyinHouston 08.10.09 @ 2:39 pm

Those uniforms with Pittsburgh stretched across the shirt and the dark navy with vegas gold look pretty good now.

Comment by TonyinHouston 08.10.09 @ 2:40 pm

This is pure throwback and is far better than recent years. Do you really need to see a GIANT PITT on the front of the jersey? Hopefully opponents know who they are playing when they show up on game day. I also hope we dont have a 3rd option for uni’s. Keep the pants and have a simple home and away jersey – end it at that. Bring on the helmets and then as j peasy says, let’s get 10 wins.

is evryone so enthralled over the unis that no one bothered to play the video of Wanny’s presser today? It is on the Channel 4 pittsburghchannel link on the the 2nd post above (by Jason) and ends at 30 minute mark

a few things:
– all are healthy
– 2 chief concerns are tailback and kicking game
– Stull won spring comp, will come in as starter, but talked very positively about Bostick
– Todd Thomas to prep school, hope to get him in in Jan
– breakout year expected for Dorin D & Caregein

Comment by w Bill 08.10.09 @ 3:04 pm

Bring on basketball season.

Comment by Mark 08.10.09 @ 3:16 pm

The new jerseys are great! Aside from the hues of the blue and gold, they are striking similar to the Marino-era ones. Thank God they ditched that huge Pitt logo on the front too. There’s simply no need for it to be there and on both sides of the helmet. That’s Arena Football League garbage.

The new design is timeless, aesthetically pleasing, and maybe most importantly, legible.

Comment by Kyle 08.10.09 @ 4:02 pm

Throw in a script Pitt helmet and I’m all in. Possibly why they’re not showing helmets yet?

Comment by Cool Hand Nuke 08.10.09 @ 4:22 pm

Much ado about nothing. Pitt bloggers won’t be satisfied until our Panthers are adorned in Steelers throwaway black and gold. Now let’s get some data the summer practices. P.S. Cameron Wright is the shortest 6 ft, 5 inch guard in the country. Why? Because he is 5 ft. 11. George from Columbus

Comment by rev. george mehaffey 08.10.09 @ 4:46 pm

Chase Adams is officially coming to Pitt.

link to post-gazette.com

I stand by my previous belief that there is very little downside to this move. He immediately provides depth at the point, and more importantly, probably allows Gibbs to focus on shooting guard. My guess is that Woodall will get first shot at earning the starting spot, with Adams being his primary backup.

In terms of the uniforms, I am also curious about the helmet, although I wouldn’t hold my breath about script on the helmets. I’d be happy if they just revert to having a stripe down the middle.

Comment by Pantherman13 08.10.09 @ 4:53 pm

Helmets won’t have the script. The logo on the jersey is block. Can you imagine if we have both styles on one uniform?!

After watching the Media Day interviews ( link to pittsburghpanthers.com ) my preseason vow is to wax more optimistically and enthusiastically about our team. It’s clear to me that they are aware of the negativity by the press and and by participants on blogs like this.

So I’ll start right now by wishing our team the best of luck. You have much talent and I hope our coching staff maximizes it.

HAIL TO PITT!

At least until after the Youngstown game. (Damn, last year’s opener was hard to swallow.)

Wow—those uniforms are terrific. Obviously, they are much ado about SOMETHING. Thankyou W. Bill for posting that web. I wish the players would have been identified. Columbus George

Comment by rev. george mehaffey 08.10.09 @ 8:48 pm

Ummm.. they aren’t drastically different from last year’s. Why does anyone care about this?

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 08.10.09 @ 9:08 pm

I love the new uniforms. I can’t see why people are complaining they are at least more of a throwback than dino-cat or the recent Uni’s with the huge PITT. I love the numbers on the sleeve and pant stripes. I guess you can’t please everyone.
In other news, great read on Pitt hoops…specifically the last part on Chase Adams…apparently they think he’s good enough to maybe win the starting job. I think its a great addition, competition is always good. Also, how many tournament games do we watch where guards from these smaller schools have big time talent and stick it to big time teams. It sounds like this kid could be a player like that: link to bebballreportpitt.blogspot.com

Comment by Ontario Lett's Go Pitt 08.10.09 @ 9:53 pm

I hate to say it, but switch to Nike looks too similar to PSU.

Comment by Tom 08.10.09 @ 10:32 pm

I’m worried the gold in the helmet isn’t going to match the gold in the pants . . . I really hope they still have the solid navy pants, I loved our all navy look.

Comment by Deez 08.10.09 @ 10:33 pm

New unis look great. I like the very “classic” look of them and the subtle change in color is cool too.
We looked like a high school team with and enormous “PITT” on our chests the last few years, these are much nicer.

Comment by TJ 08.11.09 @ 12:43 am

Why do I like the new uniforms? The numbers will be LEGIBLE from the upper deck in Heinz Field.

I like the gold hue, the uniforms do look good.

Comment by KeyboardKev 08.11.09 @ 7:46 am

I love the new unis! Thank goodness we resisted the trendy viking horn on the side of the pants (see Lville’s new uni…ughh!) Also, I really hope the stupid ND helmet with a logo is also gone. It appears that it will be because the vegas gold helmet would look bad with the rest of the uni…I’m guessing a gold helmet the same color as the pants with a block PITT logo…sweet. Really, now when you see them on TV you will know right away that it is Pitt playing.

Comment by HbgFrank 08.11.09 @ 10:13 pm

You’re right. They do look too much like penn state.

Although I do love the subtle change in color. It sets off their eyes.
