August 6, 2009

Not the full schedule, but at least the non-con has been finalized. Good sign for Pitt to actually have the schedule out in early August. It means they weren’t scrambling to find a couple more games like they have the past few years.

Note the exhibition game for Pitt against D-II Coker College Cobras from Hartsville, SC. The Cobras’ Head Coach Dan Schmotzer was an assistant at TCU when Coach Dixon was a player. so that might explain this exhibition rather than some other more local D-II team.

Fan Fest is October 3. That does not interfere with a football game as Pitt plays at Louisville on Friday night, October 2.

I challenge anyone to decide which of those home games is most exciting…

Did Pederson take cues from Tim Curley’s schedule-making methodologies???

Comment by LGP 08.06.09 @ 5:34 pm

Meh, it’s a rebuilding year, anyway. No point in scheduling a ton of ranked teams early in the year when the team is trying to find its game. They’ll get plenty of those in the conference slate, anyway.

Check out the NBE site. Dokish has a huge scoop. Looks like we have a new PG for THIS year!!!

Comment by Mark 08.06.09 @ 9:25 pm

Hm from the very little information I can find online I’d rather let Gibbs and Woodall fight it out and either save the ‘ship or get a big man. His numbers are good but the competition is eh. even if he got a few games a year against D-1 teams it’s just not gonna make the difference. He is a good student though, I guess if he has one more year of eligibility then we could let him be a “one and done” sort of guy effectively. Then he wouldn’t take up scolarship in the future. Just my speculations.

Comment by Matthew 08.07.09 @ 12:12 am

You don’t have to save a scholarship. He is for this season, then he’s gone. So it’s either him or nobody. I’m saying he starts. Clearly the staff wasn’t happy with the idea of Woodall or Gibbs starting. Woodall is too inexperienced and Gibbs is better shooting instead of distributing. I think it’s perfect.

Comment by Mark 08.07.09 @ 12:30 am

I know hopes this year are present but being very realistic it’s really not our year to win the Big East/go deep in the tourney. I think we would be better suited by having Woodall play the point and learn the system so he could give us depth behind Epps next year than try a stop-gap measure in a year where expectations aren’t really very high. Given that, I the added depth could be nice and it is only for one year so I see the wisdom of the move. I’m sure Dixon and his staff will pick someone who’s pretty solid too. I don’t think it’s good for him to start cause he’s gone in a year along with his experience and we’re left with Woodall to backup who is no bettter for his year of play.

Comment by Matthew 08.07.09 @ 3:09 am

Woodall will still play a lot but he is VERY green right now. He’s only a redshirt freshman and because of injuries he is even more inexperienced than usual. The fact that Dixon is bringing him in is all you need to know about how they feel about the position.

Comment by Mark 08.07.09 @ 3:29 am

If it weren’t for the KC tournament, this might be Dixon’s finest hour in bad non-conference scheduling. This is why I buy individual tkts to games rather than the season pkg. The first few months are painful every year for all my buddies with season seats.

Comment by hugh green 08.07.09 @ 8:55 am

i’ve never considered owning season tickets to my favorite team “painful”

Comment by Jamie H 08.07.09 @ 9:13 am

You must not be getting the calls from buddies with extra seats trying to find someone to sit in them for IUP and CMU in Nov/Dec. I get the same calls every year, so I guess there are some folks who, by their non-attendance, must also consider it painful.

Comment by hugh green 08.07.09 @ 9:56 am

why r pitt fans so dam negative about everything, do you want pitt to play unc, duke, ucla michigan state every yr non conf to make the fans happy. Pitts scheduling has been fine for the past 5 yrs or so. i am a season tix holder for both fb and hoops, and i will not miss a game, no matter who they play, you have tickets cause your a fan of pitt not to watch the other team.
to many yinzers following pitt.

Mike – ever hear “strength of schedule” discussed on Selection Sunday”? Just curious…

Comment by LGP 08.07.09 @ 1:50 pm

yes i have heard of rpi LGP, Pitt is always usually right there on top and i can see the same this year

Comment by mike 08.07.09 @ 3:21 pm

Pitt’s RPI has been good and they’ve been able to get away with the weak non-conf schedule because the Big East has been on top as a conference. The BE is down a bit this year (not dramatically, but a lot of NBA talent left), so the weak non-conf schedule is tougher to justify.

Comment by hugh green 08.08.09 @ 1:21 pm

Doesn’t the fact that we lost four starters from last year’s team count as some justification???

Comment by Jeff 08.08.09 @ 8:21 pm

That just makes it even more important to beat some decent competition, both in the non-conf and once the conf slate starts.

I’d buy your argument if Howland/Dixon didn’t have such a history of not playing ANYBODY before the league started, no matter how good or bad the outlook was for the team. Years of laughable non-conf games have made many of us skeptical……
