Sun Bowl Bound

In case you didn’t think it was official yet.

The University of Pittsburgh has accepted an invitation to play in the 75th annual Brut Sun Bowl, announced Sun Bowl Association executive director Bernie Olivas. The game will pit No. 23 Pittsburgh against a team from the Pac-10 Conference on Wednesday, Dec. 31 at noon (MT) at Sun Bowl Stadium.

“We are extremely happy to have extended an invitation to Pittsburgh to play in the 75th anniversary of the Brut Sun Bowl,” said Sun Bowl Association executive director Bernie Olivas. “Pittsburgh has a storied football program and will be making its third trip to El Paso. They area team on the rise and we could not be more excited.”

Pittsburgh (9-3, 5-2 Big East) secured the selection with a 34-10 road win over Connecticut. The win marked the fourth win in the last five games for the Panthers. Pittsburgh’s opponent from the Pac-10 will be announced on Sunday at 5 p.m. MT.

“Everything about Pittsburgh right now is a positive. They really bring so much to the table,” said SBA football chairman John Folmer. “Running back LeSean McCoy will remind a lot of people of Tony Dorsett, who rushed for 142 yards in the 1975 Sun Bowl for Pittsburgh. Local fans will also remember (head coach) Dave Wannstedt, who spent four seasons as the defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys.”

This marks Pittsburgh’s first nine-win regular season since 1982.

“Pitt football and the Sun Bowl are synonymous with great football tradition,” said Pittsburgh director of athletics Steve Pederson. “It is an honor for us to be playing in the 75th anniversary of a game that has meant so much to college football. We can’t wait to bring our fine team to El Paso.”

It is still not official as to who Pitt will face. Oregon State, though, seems a lock. USC is going to the Rose Bowl. Oregon played in El Paso last year. They could, I suppose invite Cal or Arizona, but no one seems to even think that’s what will happen.

It’s nice to be going to a bowl again. The Sun Bowl is right up there with the Gator and Cotton Bowls in terms of prestige (for the non-BCS bowls). We are clearly on the rise. If Shady returns, this will be a pre-season top 10-15 team in 2009. I’ve been very critical of Stull, but hopefully a year of experience under his belt will make him an effective game manager, which is all he really needs to be. Looking forward to the Sun Bowl and the 2009 season. HAIL TO PITT!

hey funny fact. Last time Pitt went to the sunbowl we had a sophomore stud of a running back in Dorsett in 75, and the next year Pitt won a national championship with him. This year we have Shady, and if he stays….. well who knows what this team could do

hail to pitt

Comment by ryan 12.07.08 @ 12:12 am

ryan,

Dorsett was a junior when he went to the Sun Bowl in 75. Won the Heisman and national chmapionship as a senior in 76. HTP

Comment by Ann 12.07.08 @ 12:16 am

Ryan,

Also, the last time Pitt went to the Sun Bowl was in 1989. It was just before that game that Paul Hackett had the interim tag removed. While Pitt won that Sun Bowl over Texas A&M, it was also the high point of the Hackett era. After that, it was downhill.

Comment by Chas 12.07.08 @ 12:21 am

Sun Bowl … I like it. 9-3 is a success and those that say that it isn’t must have missed the previous two years of Pitt Football. We have a shot to achieve 10 wins and on New Year’s Eve? … that’s like a gift from above.

Here’s to Champagne and Shady! *raises a glass*

Comment by Panthoor 12.07.08 @ 12:27 am

Heck, let’s go back to 2005, 3 seasons. 5, 6, 5 win seasons and no bowl games. Would this be considered a Frank Beamer type of progress or do we have to block a few more more punts?

Comment by Panthoor 12.07.08 @ 12:32 am

Buying my flight today… you know I’m excited when I’m passing up new years in NOLA. Hail to Pitt.

Beavers’ media sound scared.

Comment by wannstache 12.07.08 @ 1:15 am

@Wannstache,

I read that earlier. They are still stunned by the colossal beatdown that Oregon gave them last week.

My funny fact, since we’re apparently dropping them in this thread:

The John Hancock Bowl is the first Pitt game that I remember watching on TV as a kid. My parents are both alumni, and I remember being really excited when we won. Definitely made an impression on me as a child when my dad, a professor, would take me into Oakland to pop into Hillman and do research or into the Cathedral to see the Nationality Rooms.

HTP fellow friends, students, and alumni!

I just mapquested it….El Paso is 1,800.08 miles from Pittsburgh!!! Damn! Gas is cheaper, but not that cheap!

Comment by Tony 12.07.08 @ 1:23 am

Let’s make a great showing in El Paso, one that befits our great team. HTP!

Comment by mbuncher 12.07.08 @ 9:42 am

hmmm, i’m in Dallas, its a 10 hour drive, meaning its a shorter flight from p-burgh than for me to drive, I guess I can make the trip though

Comment by Patrick 12.07.08 @ 11:07 am

Southwest flies to El Paso. Some good rates, depending on where you live.

Comment by maz. 12.07.08 @ 11:49 am

Hopefully Pitt will have a good number of people going to the game, you know, more than 2000.

..well, the rankings are trickling in at this time now (Sun., 2:30) 2008 NCAA Football Rankings – Week 15 (Dec. 7)

BCS Standings
Standings Not Available

AP Top 25
18. Pittsburgh 9-3 428
24. Oregon State 8-4 163

nice jump, Coaches Poll however, less generous when ranking Pitt

…yep, results for USA Today Coaches’ Poll seemingly just in (though yet to appear in “index”):

21. Pittsburgh 9-3 316 23
25. Oregon State 8-4 131 24

Comment by Neil 12.07.08 @ 2:44 pm

Depending on where you live you can save a little over $200 per person by flying out of Columbus Ohio to El Paso on Southwest rather than Pittsburgh. Its a 3 hour drive for me but for $400 (two of us) its worth the drive. Lets buy those Sun Bowl tickets.

Harris Poll is yet to arrive as well

Comment by Neil 12.07.08 @ 2:54 pm

The coach’s poll is such a joke. I’m not saying that the coach’s don’t know football (they obviously do) but they don’t watch all the teams in the country. How is Wanny supposed to know how good Arizona is, or vice versa? These guys have enough to worry about with their own teams, and I doubt most of them even watch many other games. Oh well, we’re still going to El Paso, and those inbreds a few miles south are playing in the NobodyCares Bowl. Not much to complain about there!

A great season…and after Oregon beat down on OSU (yes, another OSU …only they have 2 major national chanmpionships in three years..in baseball, that is), people are wondering how good they are (the team that beat USC, and missed a FG or would have beaten Utah…or the one psu and Oregon manhandled). OSU has a superb runner in ‘Quiz Rodgers (sat out of Oregon game due to injuries), a former NFL coach (Mike Reilly…a great local boy who has a way with local recruits), and QB issues in some games.

What a wonderful PITT season, especially when people recount after Bowling Green and Rutgers–when everyone wondered if PITT would win 3 or 4 games….congrats to the entire TEAM, and a legion of fans who never gave up (thank You also for Jimmy V, though not a PITT man, showed us with class to never give up)!

Hail to PITT!

As frustrating as it was losing to Bowling Green, I am very proud of this team. I’d be surprised if Pitt wasn’t favored in this game. I can’t wait to watch. Our football and basketball programs are in great shape. Pitt is it.

Comment by Eric R 12.07.08 @ 6:12 pm

How about our girl’s basketball?

Upending #8 Maryland 86-57?

Things are looking good for Pitt Atheletics.

Comment by Jason 12.07.08 @ 7:10 pm

Eric is right, this is one of the guttiest Pitt teams I’ve ever seen. Everyone (including myself) counted them out after the Bowling Green game. They came back and won 5 straight. The doubters were back after a shocking loss the Rutgers, but the next week, Pitt rallied to beat ND in South Bend in a 4 OT thriller. Cincy shattered our hopes of a Big East title, but then we broke the hearts of the hoopies for the second year in a row. All in all, this was a very good year, and things look to get even better next year, especially if Shady returns.

Comment by hail2pitt 12.07.08 @ 7:35 pm

there is a brief note in the Trib stating that the Pitt – Rutgers bb game playing the same time as the Sun Bowl will NOT be changed. Once again, the poor leadership of the Big East surfaces. Pitt only has a handful of bowl games ties — why would the BE schedule a basketball of two of its football schools at the same time of any of its bowl games??

Comment by wild Bill 12.07.08 @ 7:54 pm

2008 is turning out to be a Great year for Pitt Sports. I for one am hoping 2009 is even better. 11 wins in Football and a National Championship in Hoops. Am I crazy???I’m afraid we’ll have to do it without Shady though. He’d be risking too much to come back next year and I believe that the adults around him will counsel him to take advantage of his opportunity now instead of come back. The lure of big $ is too much and he’s a sure fire 1st rounder. Good luck, Shady.

Comment by The Hagen 12.07.08 @ 9:13 pm

Rutgers board ticked off about bowl. Want to pull out of the big east.

Comment by alcofan 12.07.08 @ 9:26 pm

What bowl did RU want? They did lose 5 games.

Comment by HbgFrank 12.07.08 @ 9:31 pm

Would be nice if they did pull out. It would help solve our basketball conference size issue.

Comment by The Prowler 12.07.08 @ 9:35 pm

BTW, anyone who wants to try to coordinate a tailgate or something in El Paso, that would be awesome. It is a 10 hour drive from where I live, so I am intending on being at the game. I will post on my blog in the next day or two once I know for certain, and I can run a thread over there for trying to set up a nice tailgate if people are interested.

If not, that is ok too. But it would be nice to be with other Pitt fans for a game this big.

Comment by The Prowler 12.07.08 @ 9:39 pm

Someone, anyone, please please please let’s start a petition to get the Pitt Athletic Dept. to let the team wear the throwback, old school Pitt uniforms for this game! How awesome would it be to see the old colors again, even if only for one game…that would rock! It would also harken back to Pitt’s win in the Sun Bowl 20 years ago. I know it would excite the Panther faithful!

Comment by Craig 12.07.08 @ 10:20 pm

HAHAHHAH RUTGERS… PULL OUT OF THE BIG EAST??

Their program would CRUMBLE. They were 7-5, what did they expect?

Comment by James 12.07.08 @ 10:31 pm

agree craig..that would be sweet

Comment by Ontario Let's Go Pitt 12.07.08 @ 10:34 pm

Marino senior passed away..delivered post gaztte until ’93-gotta love it.

Comment by hot sauce 12.07.08 @ 10:35 pm

PITT doubters have become believers and most of the world now knows PITT is a program on the rise. Let’s hope they play well in the Sun Bowl to kick off a great 2009!

Comment by IronManEE68 12.07.08 @ 11:28 pm

Everyone, pray to whoever you pray to for the great Dan Marino who, as hot sauce mentioned, lost his father today.

In the heat of the season, sure I may have been dissappointed that we didn’t take the Big East and get to the Orange Bowl.

But looking back at the progress made, I can’t be too upset over how things have turned out. In fact, I’m pretty excited about it. We wound up 9-3, with a shot at a 10 win season against a legitimate BCS school in the Big East’s #2 bowl bid this season.

I doubt I’d be able to travel to El Paso for the game, but is there any way to buy tickets and donate them to poor Pitt college students? We need a good turnout if we ever want the Gator Bowl to come calling.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my dad 12.07.08 @ 11:33 pm

Considering donations to the local El Paso high schools and/or military base that Carmen and I discuss over on the thread called Going Live for Pitt-UConn. Maybe you make some new people Pitt fans, but at the very least, you boost ticket sales to the game, which has to be a good thing. Especially if you buy them through the Pitt athletic dept, to help sell our allotment.

Comment by maz. 12.07.08 @ 11:42 pm

If you donate my air fare I’ll even buy the ticket.

Comment by Hogan 12.08.08 @ 3:05 am

Great idea on giving tickets to locals — I bet there are some Western PA people stationed in military/gov’t spots in the southwest (or others who could support the team). You could float a Craigslist add for ‘Free Sun Bowl tickets’…just stipulate they have to buy Pitt gear and wear it to the game. To avoid scalping, might have to get some sort of assurance they would go to the game, but have to figure that out…perhaps leave tickets at Will Call, where they get let in directly? I’m sure there are plenty of people who don’t appreciate PSU/Joe Paterno, so just mention Pitt is their best natural rival.

Comment by Matt N. 12.08.08 @ 11:20 am

Question! Is the water safe to drink in El Paso, and is their any great returants their. If the water is safe, and with great food then I want to try and go.
