Unwisely Peeking Forward

Really we should just be worried about the UConn game and not look to the bowls. Still…

Oregon State’s beat writer is not enthused about the Beavers’ chances if Pitt is in the Sun Bowl.

… exhaustive digging has brought me to the conclusion that Pitt is not a good matchup for Riley’s guys unless the OSU defense regains consciousness.

If the Beavers gave up 219 yards rushing to Jeremiah Johnson, how many yards will Pitt’s LeSean McCoy go for?

While UConn isn’t even being mentioned for the Sun Bowl, they are holding out hope.

The UConn-Pitt game Saturday at Rentschler Field in East Hartford is seemingly getting bigger by the minute.

Sun Bowl officials will be in attendance.

They may want to see No. 23 Pitt (8-3, 4-2 Big East) in person but they’ll have to keep a watchful eye on UConn, too. If they win, the Huskies (7-4, 3-3) would have the same record as Pitt and would have to become a part of the conversation when it comes to playing in El Paso, Texas, against the third-place finisher in the Pac-10 on New Year’s Eve. Some other things would have to break in the Huskies’ favor as well.

I’m not seeing it, but I suppose it would be possible if UConn really runs roughshod over Pitt and WVU loses badly to USF. Oh, and the crowd at the Rent would have to be loud, big and in their seats before kickoff. The latter is something they are even worse at doing than Pitt fans.

Having been to many home games for both teams, I have to say ConnU can’t compare to Pitt’s inability to fill the stadium by kickoff. Maybe it’s the 20K+ higher capacity of Heinz or the bright yellow seats that scream “I’m empty!”, but the Rent has always seemed more full by kickoff to me. They also sell beer inside, so it’s much easier to pry yourself away from the tailgate. I hope it doesn’t come down to nitpicking like this though, let’s run them off the field and remove any doubt.

Last call: 4 tickets, Pitt section, for tomorrow’s game. $25 for the lot. Must pick up in Central Jersey.

I’ll be at the Sun Bowl or Charlotte for sure, and could be talked into the International or Papajohns… anyone else planning on traveling to our bowl?

i’ll be in el paso for nye if we go to sun bowl.

9-3 and a sun bowl bid makes this season a hell of a lot more satisfying than 8-4 w/ yet another loss to uconn and papajohns bowl bid.

I would certainly consider splashing on some Brut & heading to El Paso for New Year’s. I would love to see what these storied hispanic Notre Dame fans are all about.

I might go to the game at Rentschler High School just so I can throw around slices of pizza after the game like a jackass.

Why are we the underdog tomorrow? I’m glad we are but don’t get it since they are a running team and our run defense is pretty good.

When asked why Pitt usually scores on its first drive, and struggles a bit with execution thereafter, Wanny said they script the first 12-15 plays and practice those intensely. So, why not use those plays (in different order of course) the rest of the game? To that, Wanny said that is something they should look at. What does WVU run, like 3 plays? Monumental breakthrough in strategy!

I expect Pitt to play well tomorrow. My great worry is Wanny vs Edsell….everyone should be concentrating on this game. UConn is capable of blowing us out. Having said that, I expect Pitt to play their best game of the year. Look at the matchups….we should own their lines….

9-3 would be great… but being a pitt fan.. always have to prepare for let down.

I think if Stull plays a decent game, we win. He doesn’t need three touchdown passes or 280 yards passing, just solid numbers and some key third down conversions. I agree we should be able to handle their running, but ‘that’s why they play the games’.

are we feeling a little better about the Rutgers loss now? I remember telling a friend after that game that I had never seen a QB so accurate as Teel that day on long passes. He put 3 or 4 passes of 35-35 yds right on the money that day — similar to last night. And L-ville at least should have been more cognizant of the long ball threat than we were (but probably shuld have been.)

Uh, why could’t we put any safeties deep against buttgers? After teh SECOND TD, i would have told my safeties their only goal in life is to stay deeper than the deepest man…instead they were creeping up to stop the non-existant run game…awful coaching.

Guess we’ll see how the coaches do tomorrow…i’m more worried about them than the players…

If Pitt gets picked for the Sun Bowl, there is a 90% chance I will be going. It is a 10 hour drive for me (much closer than Birmingham, AL) and I can easily have off work.

If others are going, let me know. We can get a good tailgate or something going.

Though lets wait and see if Pitt gets picked first I guess. =-)

Wild Bill – I know what you mean. After the RU loss I was rather shocked how everyone was so critical of Mike Teel and how convinced they were that a game like that was totally impossible from a QB as bad as Teel – and PITT had to be the sole reason he had a day like he did against us.

Of course, if you look at Teel’s career at RU you’d have seen that the kid can pass pretty darn well, and has done so on a rather regular basis. So the “game of a lifetime” against PITT gets replicated a month later… funny how that happens.
