BlogPoll Week 10, Draft

Okay, here’s the latest in my initial ballot for this week’s blogpoll.

Rank Team Delta
1 Alabama 1
2 Penn State 1
3 Texas Tech 5
4 Texas 3
5 Florida 2
6 Oklahoma 2
7 Southern Cal 1
8 Utah 1
9 Oklahoma State 3
10 Boise State
11 Ohio State
12 Georgia 7
13 TCU
14 Ball State
15 LSU
16 Missouri 4
17 West Virginia 2
18 California 6
19 Brigham Young 2
20 Cincinnati 6
21 Georgia Tech 5
22 Northwestern 4
23 Michigan State 3
24 Maryland 2
25 Oregon State 1
Dropped Out: Tulsa (#16), Minnesota (#17), Oregon (#18), Florida State (#22), South Florida (#23), Notre Dame (#25).

I am simply scared to death to rank Pitt at this point.

This is the flattest season in college football I can remember. I can be convinced that any of the final six teams in the rankings shouldn’t be there. The problem is finding a team worthy of being there instead.

We are now 7-8 games into the season. Records really come into play, not just how a team looked in the last or past couple games.

Speaking of records coming into play, Tennessee is now 3-6, and ESPN is reporting that Fat Phil is gone at the end of the season.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: Penn State hasn’t beaten anyone. I understand they look very impressive, but there’s a reason that Penn State went undefeated in 94 and no one outside of Happy Valley cares that they got “snubbed” of a national title: they don’t play anyone, they never play anyone, and they don’t learn from their mistakes. When we got our annual downgrade in NCAA seeding in hoops for about five years in a row, we finally wised up and started scheduling well. Now, of course, this year’s schedule doesn’t look as sharp, but theoretically the conference slate will help us there. But Penn State’s conference slate doesn’t do them any favors. They beat Ohio State…who has also beaten NO ONE! To that end, a Texas Tech team that beat Texas (who beat Oklahoma, who beat TCU, you get the point) must be a more-valued commodity. Keep in mind, the Penn State apologists are so deluded that they’re talking about how Penn State has a big road test at mighty Iowa this weekend. IOWA! I have yet to hear ANYONE credit Pitt with a big win by beating Iowa. Hopefully this is made moot by the fact that Penn State loses to Michigan State, but it bears mentioning.

I think the BCS polls have it correct at the top. PSU is very impressive, but how do you put them above TT? First, this is a weekly poll and PSU did not play. I don’t think at this point in the season you should automatically move up because someone in front of you lost while you had a bye. Second, TT is also undefeated and beat the No.1 team. It’s close, but you have to give the slight edge to TT in my book.

Big East players of the week are Conor Lee, Pat White, and Morrty Ivy.

McKillop and Shady both deserved the awards, but they ended up on the honor roll.

Texas Tech deserves to be ahead of Penn State. Penn State hasn’t played anyone. Also, Florida would destroy Penn State if given the opportunity.

Comment by Rob 11.03.08 @ 3:37 pm

I have to disagree with you guys. Penn State has absolutely destroyed every team they have played with the sole exception being OSU and I think we will all agree that OSU is a good team. I’m not arguing that PSU should be #1 or #2 in the BCS standings, I am just arguing that they are not as bad as everyone says and if TT or Alabama lose, deserve to be up there. Unlike the OSU teams of the past they have the speed, offensively and defensively, to compete against the SEC or the Big 12.

Do NOT rank Pitt…ever, for the rest of the season, at all costs, for the love of God!!! Haha

@Rob,

As difficult as it would be to root for Urban Meyer (sic?), I’d be able to look past that if it meant watching that Staters claims of legitimacy get put to rest by a Class-A whuppin’ courtesy of the SEC.

I’ve been a Pitt fan all my life, but I currently attend Penn State (I didn’t want to go to school 15 minutes from home). For the first time, I’ve been following Penn State, and I’ve gone to every home football game this year. Aside from the OSU game, they have completely dominated every team they have played, outscoring their opponents 376 to 100. They have beaten 2 currently ranked teams (OSU and Illinois) plus a formerly ranked team (Wisconsin). They also beat Oregon State 45-14, a team that beat USC.

It’s a long season, gentlemen.

Damn! WVU is back up to #17. Maybe by the time they get here they’ll be ranked even higher and we can spank their a$$ again.

Comment by DawnTawn Mikee 11.03.08 @ 9:32 pm

Stanford beat Oregon State, too! Its a simple fact that the only reason Penn State is ahead of Texas Tech on anyone’s ballot is because TT started the season ranked way worse than PSU, and hasn’t quite climbed up the whole way yet. TT has been incredible too, lest we forget, and they beat one of the other ten best teams in the country. End of story.

maz-
TTU started off #12 AP. Penn State started out #22, they just jumped up after they proved they were a good team by beating previously ranked Illinois.

Chas, just recuse yourself from putting Pitt in your poll, ever. Lots of bloggers do it for their own teams. Look at that Sean guy at Troy Nunes… do you ever see him put Syracuse in his Top 25? No? There you go.
