BlogPoll Week 7, Draft

Okay. This week there is some shake-up.

Rank Team Delta
1 Alabama 2
2 Texas 3
3 Penn State 3
4 Oklahoma 3
5 Georgia 2
6 Southern Cal 2
7 Florida 4
8 LSU 4
9 Texas Tech
10 Utah 5
11 Ohio State 1
12 Brigham Young 2
13 Oklahoma State 13
14 Kansas
15 Missouri 13
16 North Carolina 3
17 South Florida
18 Virginia Tech 2
19 Boise State 1
20 Ball State
21 Wake Forest 1
22 Michigan State 1
23 California 2
24 Minnesota 2
25 Georgia Tech 1
Dropped Out: Vanderbilt (#13), Northwestern (#21).

Have to concede that Penn State looks pretty damn good. Yes, they beat up a lot of cupcakes, but they did it without any mercy. Wisconsin may have been overrated, but they had lost two straight and were at home and desperate. PSU just dismantled them.

Okay, now I believe that Oklahoma State is a pretty good team.

Essentially swapped spots for Utah and BYU. The Cougars may have had a final of 21-3 vs. New Mexico, but I actually watched a lot of that game. BYU was very unimpressive at home against a mediocre MWC opponent.

Vandy gets Croomed and out they go. Buh-bye Northwestern.

Another impressive turnaround is coming out of Minnesota as Tim Brewster has that team going after a hideous 1st season.

UNC has lost their starting QB and now their star receiver and return guy. Yet they are still winning. Butch Davis definitely didn’t lose anything as a college coach while doing time in Cleveland and the NFL Network.

As always reasoned arguments about teams will help shape the final ballot.

Texas Tech is uncomfortably unchanged. It’s just that I don’t feel much better about anyone behind them.

i agree sort of with your ranking, except how is kansas ahead of sfla, when sfla beat a ranked kansas team and kansas has not beaten anybody in the top 25? hopefully PITT will be on your ranks next wk if they can beat NAVY!

Good point about Kansas. Especially after the way they struggled at home with Colorado.

You give far too many style points. Good teams win football games. And they beat good football teams. It doesn’t matter how they do it. Pitt having a win over South Florida at South Florida is more impressive than many of the 1 loss teams big wins. (UNC, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Minnesota, the list can go on). I also think it is far more forgiving that even though it was BGSU, it was the first game of the season. The fact of the matter is they have found ways to win, and so have these other teams, but I believe they own a more impressive big win that validates them further than many of these teams.

If you agree with the Kansas point, then you should agree with Pitt being ranked, they beat SFLA, who beat Kansas. Just because a school is from a strong conference doesn’t mean that at this point in the season they have proven to be a good team yet.

I can’t agree with Alabama at #1 over Texas. Beating Georgia, even up there, isn’t nearly as good as beating an Oklahoma team that has legitimate national title aspirations. Texas has got to be the top team in the nation.

I don’t agree with Missou falling so far- they lost to an undefeated, legit team by 5 points.

I agree with the fact that TT, BYU and Utah should be lower than the national polls. When TT plays some quality competition, I think their defense will show its true colors. They could have easily lost to a Nebraska team that has been blown out several times this year! Great poll!

Pitt opens as a 3.5 favorite over Navy…looks like the experts see a similar game to last year. I don’t. Our offense and defense are better than they were last year, and Navy is…well, Navy. Pitt 48, Navy 20.

This Bowden firing should be watched closely by us Pitt fans, since Clemson is pretty much the southern parallel to us [I think in ’05 Lindy’s even called Clemson that year’s Pitt].

Anyway, the question becomes: can someone with greater coaching acumen come in, take the existing high end talent that Clemson has, and win right away next season? If that happens, and Wanny caps out at 8 wins or less this year, I think we really need to start thinking about replacement. Clemson spent the last decade spinning its wheels, with little to show for it, and there is no reason for us to recreate those mistakes over the next 5 years.

Does anyone know if we will see the Navy game on tv in northern VA / DC area?

Chas,
Your being too tough on Pitt and not putting them in. Your bias as a Panther fan unfortunately hurts them in your poll. Think, about it, you have watched every single game the Panthers have played end to end. You ahve seen the good and bad, impressive and unimpressive. As a pitt blogger you have had to focus on many of the question marks and areas of improvement for the team. Because of this you focus on the negative side of things, which you can’t be blamed with, you’ve seen it all. Now, take the other teams in the top 25, I highly doubt that you have seen all or even half of every teams games. Undoubtedly there are teams that you may not have even seen play this season. As a result, you resort to ESPN highlights and coverage of the game. Which mostly shows the good plays. Conservative plays often aren’t shown, disagreebale play calls, typically not shown. So what you get is the great plays a team makes and the result. If that were the case for Pitt I would guess you would rank them as many others do. But, because you see everything and not just the good you leave them out. There are many teams, WFU, UNC, Mich St., Ball State, that if you watched every game you would probably leave them out. There would be things that disgust you about all of the teams and would cause you to think they aren’t good enough. I believe the Panthers deserve the boost into the rankings even b4 beating Navy this weekend. It’s your choice but at least think about it from this perspective.

One horrible loss at home + 2 sloppy wins in the 4th quarter against inferior teams + one good win + one great victory = No Top 25 (for now).

Now, by contrast (I am going to get killed for this) PSU has not played a ranked team, but they are dominating every team they play from start to finish. That is why with one less loss than us, they appear at No. 3 in the USA today Top 25 poll, and we don’t appear at all.

Comment by HbgFrank 10.13.08 @ 7:48 pm

Frank, I agree with everything you say. I’d also emphasize that while PSU has “one less loss” there is a HUGE difference between no losses and one loss. Penn State is a legit threat to go all the way. (Though I will cry.)

Comment by maz. 10.13.08 @ 8:02 pm

How is wake forest any better than that with a bad loss to navy, sloppy/close wins vs. mississippi, FSU and Clemson? I agree with Move Pitt In’s point.

Comment by Ritzer 10.13.08 @ 8:19 pm

Rex: the Navy game is on nationally on the CBS College Sports Network
