Yep. Smart and necessary move by Coach Wannstedt after the hiring of new DC Phil Bennett. Greg Gattuso gets his own promotion.

Pitt football coach Dave Wannstedt announced today that defensive line coach Greg Gattuso has been given the additional title of assistant head coach.

Gattuso, 45, has spent three seasons on Wannstedt’s staff after 12 years as head coach at Duquesne University. Gattuso was a finalist for Pitt’s defensive coordinator opening, but Wannstedt hired former Southern Methodist coach Phil Bennett.

“From a staff standpoint, Greg Gattuso will be my assistant head coach,” Wannstedt said. “He’s done a great job recruiting in the area, and I think he can bring a lot more to the table.”

Yep.

Well, its been reported its not likely at all that Fields will be back for the Marquette game on the 15th…i guess now we can start praying he gets back for the last 6 games starting the 21st at ND…that’ll be 7 weeks from his surgery…

I like this:

‘What impressed Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt was that Bennett, a longtime associate, not only shared a similar philosophy but also was willing to learn the Panthers’ terminology rather than implementing his own.

Bennett said the Panthers will use multiple formations to confuse their opponents while keeping it relatively simple so as not to confuse their own players.

“We’re not going to change a whole lot,” Bennett said. “It’s a lot easier for me to learn the terminology that’s in place. But, I can tell you, I want to improve. They found their niche with what they wanted to do defensively, and they were good at it. I want to help us get to the next level.”‘

I don’t like this:

‘Bennett said he believes “defense is an attitude,” and wants his to be one that can win games with a four-man rush and a solid secondary instead of relying upon blitzing.’

Stuart, aggressive is good – giving up home runs on a blitz play is bad. We’ll see more of the former as we did in the second half of the 2007 season.

Even in the WVU game we didn’t blitz continually, what we did was choose the proper times to do it, when it could work.

I like this hire, and it fits with the recruitment pattern of DW for defensive players over the last two years. Now, though I wonder if we’ll see a different D lineup at LB with Murray fading into the background and more speed at the outside LB positions.

Also Post Gazette reports this :

NOTE — Pitt defensive end Doug Fulmer was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA, which means he is a sophomore in eligibility and has three seasons left to play. Fulmer has missed most of the past two seasons with a broken ankle and a torn ACL.

No more read and react bs!!!

When Bennett was asked his defensive philosophy, he said it was very similar to Wannstedt’s in that it was “aggressive and dictating.”

“Defense is an attitude,” Bennett said. “We want to be aggressive yet smart enough to execute the game plan. An old coach once told me ‘a band is going to play every time you blitz so you better make damn sure it is yours.’ If you want to be dominant on defense you have to dictate tempo and get takeaways and that’s what we’ll do.”

Notice in Trib article that the current WR coach at the U. of Maryland is expected to be named the WR coach later this week. Sounds like a good move to enhance recruiting efforts in the DC metro region (DC and MD & VA suburbs). Hope he can both coach and recruit well.

Apparently Stoudt is pulling his verbal to Pitt and committing to Louisville. Dang- he looked like he had good potential.

Comment by Dan35 02.05.08 @ 12:34 pm

Interesting scoop, Dan. I wonder if that means his scholarship will get rolled to the Vaughn kid from Central? It will be an interesting next 24 hours, that’s for sure.

Comment by johnny 02.05.08 @ 12:48 pm

Even without Stoudt, there is a lot of depth (and competition) at quarterback. With the new addtions to the staff, DW has a staff that can develop the team into a BE contender, and potentially recruit. All they need now is better looking Uni’s…

Don’t forget the stadium on campus!

Comment by Joey T 02.05.08 @ 1:39 pm

Good luck to Stoudt at Louisville. It will make an interesting rivalry in a few years when he goes against Sunseri at PITT.

Comment by Ironhead 02.05.08 @ 2:26 pm

I’m not exactly sure where the stadium on campus comes into play. There’s just some very good competition at QB w/ Bostick, Sunseri, & Cross.

Comment by Ironhead 02.05.08 @ 2:30 pm

IronHead,

Don’t forget that Stull and Smith will be in the mix too.

Comment by Jon In NOVA 02.05.08 @ 2:49 pm

I’m looking down the road. Stull is a Junior. If he doesn’t wrestle the job from Cross & Bostick then he will be relegate to back-up or transfer. IMO Smith isn’t possible against the talent available now. Both Stoudt (for LV) and Sunseri will RS next year. By the Time Stoudt would have been strong enough to compete at PITT, his competitors on the roster would be Sunseri, Cross & Bostick (not to mention if we sign somebody nect year). What I am curious about is where this schol goes. Vaughn indicated in the papers he wanted an offer. We could take the greyshirt off of Tags or maybe D. Britts committs as a QB????

Comment by Ironhead 02.05.08 @ 3:02 pm

I think its pretty obvious where this scholarship goes…Terrelle Pryor was holding off on his commitment because he didn’t want to have to compete against Stoudt for four years….now that the cupboard is bare for Pitt at QB, and the competition from Stoudt is gone, you can be sure Pryor will have his LOI signed, sealed and delivered to his hometown Panthers.

Comment by Maz 02.05.08 @ 3:18 pm

What the heck is Rich Rod going to do w/o Pryor? The WVU beatdown now has Michigan as a casualty. Maybe they could fire RR & beg mallet to come back.

Comment by Ironhead 02.05.08 @ 4:13 pm

Bostick is going to redshirt this season unless Cross and Stull fall completely flat on their faces.

Comment by Phil Hendrie 02.05.08 @ 4:20 pm

That’s been the big story no one has really been talking about. It’s going to seriously F Rodriguez’s plans. They had the bona-fide classic Michigan pocket passer in Mallet and they lost him because of RR. I think the only thing that softened the blow was they seemed to be the favorite to get Pryor- now there are gonna be some seriously disturbed Michigan fans if they don’t land him.

Comment by Dan35 02.05.08 @ 4:23 pm

do not be surprised when pryor picks pitt and shocks the world….everything he is doing is just a smokescreen…he is friends with so many athletes at Pitt….Stoudt left us because he was told that someone else is committing to Pitt…i believe we will hear that Pryor chooses pitt tomorrow..

Comment by Johnny 02.05.08 @ 4:43 pm

Bostick may not be redshirting, he may be starting. Hate to start this argument AGAIN but when did Stull prove that he is even an adequate D-1 QB. Smith now has more experience than him. The same with Cross. He was not recruited out of H.S. & has thrown a few pics in prep. I searched and looked at high school and prep clips of Cross. He ran the winged T offense in H.S. I did not find much about a great dual-threat ability. This will all get settled in the spring.

Comment by Ironhead 02.05.08 @ 4:45 pm

The name slips me but RR has a back-up plan. He will be kicked out of town after four straight loses to tO$U.

Comment by Ironhead 02.05.08 @ 4:47 pm

While I would be immensely pleased if Pryor sends in his fax, I just want to throw out to Johnny (with a capital “J”) and everybody else that even before you factor in our W/L record this season, I am more than happy with the kids we have on board. I’m looking forward to the naming of the new receiver’s coach, and also to further gaining recruiting strongholds in VA, MD, Eastern PA, and even Florida and Texas.

Hail to Pitt!

johnny (with a lowercase “j”)

Comment by johnny 02.05.08 @ 4:48 pm

While Stull may not have much experience, and we really don’t know how good he can be as a starter; I still don’t see how Kevan Smith can be considered ‘in the running’ for QB ahead of Stull just because Smith played more this year.

Let’s get serious here, Smith was so bad that he is the sole reason for the loss to Michigan State. Because of Smith, we had to switch to the Wildcat offense for a few games. Smith was godawful, and shouldn’t be considered in the running for waterboy, let alone QB.

Comment by The Prowler 02.05.08 @ 5:10 pm

Ironhead, Bostick just needs too much work both mentally and physically. He really was a major liability last year, if Pitt had a competent QB I really think they would have won at MSU, UL and Rutgers.

USF was a close game until Bostick threw a few picks that set up a few scores that really changed the game.

Bostick is a project but with the right coaching he can make it, he needs time to mature. Unless Cross and Stull are flat out terrible Bostick is going to take a redshirt.

Also, Pryor is going to tOSU, best of luck to him, hopefully we play them in 2010/2011 for it all.

Comment by Phil Hendrie 02.05.08 @ 6:59 pm

Pryor already committed to Kent State. Didn’t you all see that yesterday

Comment by TigerPaul (aka Jon Pryor ) 02.05.08 @ 9:08 pm

A little off topic but with Knight retiring ESPN radio here in Hawaii had a thing about some of the current great coaches out there. Dixon has been getting a lot of love from these little islands. He was an assistant at UH but still shows how great of coach he really is.
