Yet More Staff Turnover

You know, for a team that finished 5-7, Pitt’s coaches seem to be in demand. Ball, Rhoads (obligatory, awkward self-high five) and now WR Coach Aubrey Hill. He is taking the WR Coach spot at Miami.

A Miami native, Hill played at the University of Florida and was a graduate assistant there from 1996-98 and an intern with the Miami Dolphins under Wannstedt in 2002.

“The personal reasons for him going back to Miami make sense,” Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt said today. “He went to high school there in Miami. It’s a great opportunity to come back home and personal reasons were a major factor in him returning home.”

Hill did a very good job at Pitt, and will be working with probably the worst position on the Hurricanes (okay, QB was rather shaky as well). If he can help that group, he will be moving up the coaching ladder.

Coach Wannstedt said in the statement that he has no specific timetable or rush for hiring a new WR Coach. Clearly he doesn’t think it is a major issue with the recruiting class for that spot.

Terry Smith (Gateway coach) would be an excellent hire even if he is a PSU grad.

With the play of our WR’s this past year, this is another coaching change that does not break my heart. Now if we can get the special teams coach to find a new job, we may take another big step forward (Yes, I know Partridge is popular and a good recruiter, but our kick coverage teams were awful from the first game to the last).

Doubtful…neither was recruited by Hill…Other than DW, the most active recruiter that Pitt has is Gattuso. But I think that DW seals the deal for all of these kids. I saw DW interviewed on TV about recruiting and he said no scholarship is ever offered until he has a chance to meet a kid and speak to them, look them in the eye, and tell them what his plans and expectations are. These kids are coming to Pitt to play for Pitt and coach W.

I agree with HbgFrank that Hill’s move shouldn’t affect the in-house guys but you have to think of coach Hill as a commodity in terms of both recruiting and in coaching the position. I wish him luck, he is obviously a good coach.

I believe Gattuso recruited both Baldwin and Alexander (I think Alexander even mentioned how much he loved dealing with Gattuso in his post-commitment interviews), so I think we should be in good shape here.

Baldwin’s pretty much been a shoo-in at Pitt for the better part of the last year anyway,.

My feeling about DW and recruiting over the past three years is that he has been totally upfront and honest with these kids and his parents. I wouldn’t doubt that as he was sitting with the families he talked about possible coaching staff shake-ups. None of this is really surprising news (maybe Hill’s departure a little).

If you notice, HS players are usually recruited by person other then their position coach – and I think that is so the staff’s bets are hedged in these situations. No matter what staff changes you have (usually) at least one coach the kid deals with is staying.

But HbgFrank is dead on when he said these kids are coming to play for Coach Wannstedt anyway.

Evan the announcers during the WV game made comments on the open field tackling by the DBs. I tend to think that was a product of C. Ball than Paul Rhoads. I always like CB as a coach and A.Hill. These two will be missed but I trust Wanny to replace them with good coaches.

[…] The report is that A.J. Alexander out of Altoona has re-re-opened his recruiting with Aubrey Hill choosing to take the Miami Hurricanes WR Coach position. That’s a little surprising since his verbal had him singling out Assistant Coach Greg Gattuso. Keep in mind that Alexander initially gave his verbal to Florida State. It could be that he has just decided to rethink again. […]
