Though I didn’t see it personally, I’ve already had three people text me about KDKA reporting on their 6pm news that defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads is thisclose to leaving for the same DC job at Auburn. Apparently Rhoads and Auburn HC Tommy Tuberville were seen meeting together today, and there have been rumors of this move happening for a week or so. They’ve been quiet rumors though, and reaction to this from Pitt fans is probably mixed:

— We want to keep him: Pitt held one of the best offenses in the NCAA to 7 points and played and amazing game. There were different blitz packages and schemes and we were able to keep great containment on White, Slaton, and Devine. Actually, we saw enough improvement during the last few games that there was hope for an even better defense in 2008.

On the other hand…

— Up until then, the defense was horrible. We never blitzed, never made any adjustments during the game, and saw almost no improvement. It’s been said that near the end of the year, Rhoads was simply Wannstedt’s puppet, and DW fully controlled the defense using Rhoads as a middle-man. In that sense, maybe having Rhoads leave isn’t so bad. Anyone that replaces him would have a defensive unit that is fully Wannstedt’s.

Again, these are just rumors, but they seem to be gaining some real possibility.

Edit: Really? Chas beat me by 12 minutes. Ah.

BYE, SEE YA, SO LONG!!! If it took Rhoades 6.5 years to figure out how to run a D then I don’t want him here.

Just hoping it doesn’t affect recruiting…..other than that…who gives a S@#$ ?

Comment by Jon C 01.16.08 @ 7:55 pm

Gray getting hammered by the refs and Shaq because he’s a rookie…he’s actually doing pretty well. Made him miss his first shot (but called for the foul 5 seconds later) and an uncalled offensive foul on his second shot gets him to the line again…on the third shot, Gray just got shot over…

Much more interesting than watching Douche past FSU…

Comment by Stuart 01.16.08 @ 7:55 pm

yeah but does it affect some of our defensive recruits? I don’t wanna lose any of em because of a late D-Coord leaves.

IIRC…the guys on the D side of the ball are pretty loyal to Rhoades

Re: Rhoads on recruiting.

If you trust the page 2 of PantherLair.com on football commitment list,

You see that Rhoads was hardly the lead recruiter for the class.

Comment by Chas 01.16.08 @ 8:27 pm

Yea….I seriously doubt yall will lose any recruits over this Possible move, seeing that he only has One under his belt. That one is a Kicker. Is there something about him not being a good recruiter or is it that yall are having to go against the likes of PSU, OSU, Meeechigan, and now maybe Rutgers?

Your missing the first part of the news where Pryor indicated that he is now considering PITT and will do an official visit. Bob Pomp. would not state this on the local news unless correct (hopefully).

“Hate to say it, but they don’t sound real broken up IF he’s leaving.”

Was I the only person who actually watched the news and saw the piece on Pryor putting PITT back into consideration?

Comment by Ironhead 01.16.08 @ 8:44 pm

Maybe I was dreaming..

Comment by Ironhead 01.16.08 @ 8:45 pm

Well, although the WVU game was an AMAZING defensive performance, we’ve let TONS of teams in the last few years PASTE us…so, are we to discount NAVY putting up 500 yards against us? Was it the lack of talent, and then waiting for the talent to develop? Was it Wannstedt that said to change the scheme after the Navy game? What are we supposed to do about all the crap performances? Forget them?

I want the guy who was responsible for the WVU gameplan to be the defensive coordinator next year, whomever that is.

Comment by Stuart 01.16.08 @ 8:51 pm

we gonna get pryor baby!

Comment by yippie skippie 01.16.08 @ 8:52 pm

No, others have said we are “back in contention,” but i’ve heard that 100 times already…and then in a few days it comes from Pryors mouth that no, he isn’t interested.

I’ll wait til he’s quoted.

Comment by Stuart 01.16.08 @ 8:52 pm

Ironhead, thats true… but i dont think its anything to be excited about. It seems like the kid just loves the attention. Id say his chances of coming to Pitt were 1%, and maybe now up to 5% after this report… I just dont see it happening.

GOODBYE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THE KID LIKES FREE MEALS AND FREE TICKETS TO GAMES. I NEVER WANT TO HEAR HIS NAME AGAIN. HOW DO PEOPLE KEEP FALLING FOR THIS CRAP WEEK AFTER WEEK?

This week, “LSU is in it.” Guess he wants some SEC poon. If anyone thinks he’s going there, they are a moron.

He’s going to Michigan. 100%.

Comment by Stuart 01.16.08 @ 9:16 pm

Could be a bad day for Pitt. I read that they’re looking at Tim Lewis and Sam Clancy?? I don’tknow their creditenials but I sure as hell hope for Pitt’s sake they make the right decision on the new DC. Bring Foge out of retirement–he was one hell of a defense guy (lousy head coach). Just when we felt we turned the corner, we get blasted by this shit. I just hope the fuck that all the bastards that blasted Rhoades still support Pitt.

Comment by Jimjam 01.16.08 @ 9:16 pm

Stuart,

It was the way they presented it on the news. They definately tried to spin it as we are contenders. Maybe he realized that his recruitment was running second fiddle to PITT’s great recruiting class? Possibly he wanted to juice things up and bring attention back on himself. I had a short fantasy how PITT could destroy three programs in one year. We took out WVU allowing Coach Rod to Michigan. We get Pryor leaving Michigan w/o a QB because Mallet is leaving. This sets the stage for three losing seasons and Coach Rod on the unemployment line. PSU realizes they will now be insignificant in PA> next year and work behind the scenes to make it Joe Pa’s last year. We spend next year dominating the BE and in 2009 playing for the National Championship. Maybe I need to go to Recruiting Detox and enter a 12 step program.

Comment by Ironhead 01.16.08 @ 9:34 pm

Well,

WVU will still be punch drunk from the beat down we gave them. PSU will still be in shambles an we will still continue to benefit from Coach Paterno at the helm & Rich Rod will shoot himself in the foot with the violations arising out of an NCAA investigation. We will win the BE next year and shall contend for the NC in 2009.

Comment by Ironhead 01.16.08 @ 9:42 pm

One week its scout, then rivals, then this site, then psi, and now the local news….pretty soon it’ll be ESPN telling us he’s thinking about it. I’m not sure how many more ways people will keep falling for this. Everytime, its the same thing. Its over, he doesn’t want to come here, no big deal, move on. Luckily he’s not going to a school we play, so we’ll never have to deal with him.

Next.

Comment by Stuart 01.16.08 @ 9:50 pm

I guess that articles ends all speculation about the Pryor. I cant be mad at him because he always said he was not interested in PITT.
I hope he choose a classy coach like Tressel over Frothy Dsicharge Rodgriuez.
I am still a little disappointed that Jenkins eliminated us from consideration before DW visit and the hiring of the new OL coach.

Does anyone have a clue if there are any more tricks up DW sleeves?

Comment by cdmoore25 01.16.08 @ 9:51 pm

DW was calling the shots on D at the end of year. It had to be!

I watched Rhoades “Read & React D” Or as I like to call it “sit, wait, and then get bowled over D” for many years. He had Pro type talent on his teams and wasted it. We gave up BIG Yards on the ground year after year to any back with some skill.

If Auburn wants him they can have him. I would love to play them in a bowl with his stinky ass D in the game. Shady would be rolling for 250. I have have hated Rhoades for the better part of 7 years and I will be happy to see him go.

Comment by Tony In Harrisburg 01.16.08 @ 10:24 pm

where the hell are you hearing Tim Lewis or Sam Clancy for DC? That’s not even within the realm of possibility.

Comment by In My Seat 90 Minutes Before Kickoff 01.16.08 @ 10:33 pm

I though Paul Rhoads was a canidate for the same job at Auburn several years ago. Didn’t Pitt up the $$$$ and kept him???
