Every Chance to Stay on the Roster

The sense, even down in Louisiana, seems to be that Tyler Palko will have to really be terrible not to at least stay with the team this year. Coach Sean Payton personally contacted Palko about signing with the Saints if he wasn’t drafted, and Palko has been the first to arrive, last to leave player.

Yeah, you’ve heard it a million times, one of the oldest clichés: He’s the first guy on the practice field every morning, and the last one to leave every night.

But in the case of Saints rookie quarterback Tyler Palko, it’s true. He is the one guy who has been making the coaching assistants put in the most overtime throughout the first week of training camp.

“I’ve got a lot of work to do, so I’m just trying to get my extra work in. And when I get a chance to play in the preseason, hopefully the work will pay off,” said Palko, who shrugged off the notion that he’s trying to impress the coaches and evaluators with his regiment. “I don’t really believe in that. When you’re at this level, that stuff really doesn’t matter. If you’re good enough to play, you’ll be good enough to play.

“I just like to get out and get some extra work in, and I hate sitting around the locker room. So I guess that’s why I’m out there a little early.”

Still, the exhibition season will be big for the 3d stringer.

“Those live snaps you get at quarterback over the period of four or five games are very important,” Payton said. “I think for both of them, the preseason games will be important to evaluate that position.”

I can’t believe I’ll actually be watching the 3d quarter of an exhibition.

Game is starting…Go Steelers. Let’s hope Palko can show what he’s about but don’t make my defense look bad. 🙂

No article at all in the local rags on Palko, unless it was buried back by the nudie ads…lots on Paul Poszlunzky and Rasheed Marshall, though.

Any surprises there?

Jason Fife?
Screw him!

Watching the 3rd quarter? I hope they put palko in the 4th quarter. WTF is this bullshit with playing fife for the entire 3rd and starting the 4th?

Good thing they put the hands team out with Palko – otherwise he’d be 5/6 on the first drive. Where was that last ball going?

Comment by Stuart 08.05.07 @ 10:50 pm

That last throw by Palko was so him. We saw a few of those in his PITT career. The Steelers don’t look too bad this year.

Palko may be in trouble given how good Fife did. Plus, he got the Saints first rounder almost killed.

Comment by Jon C 08.05.07 @ 10:59 pm

ah, that first rounder should have caught the ball, Palko put where it needed to go…to bad that kid can’t take a hit…I think Palko looked good for the first series…

After a couple of good plays for Tyler, he throws an interception. Can’t complain though, he’s no longer at PITT and my Steelers are winning.

Comment by Panthoor 08.05.07 @ 11:02 pm

It’s only his first minutes..he should be OK when exhibition is over.

Tyler Palko: 4/8 53 yards passing, 1 run for 13 yards. 1 INT. Not bad for his first NFL action.

Comment by Panthoor 08.05.07 @ 11:11 pm

2 of those incompletes were drops by Robert Meachem too. I think he played well.

Comment by Ryan M 08.05.07 @ 11:13 pm

That Meachem kid was already dropping the ball well before getting hit, way back when he heard footsteps – he is terrible. Palko should be 6/8 – the one throw on 3rd down was to no one, and that INT was trying to do too much – he had been looking pretty good up til then.

If he keeps playing with that TERRIBLE 4th string, he’s not going to have very good stats come the end of the preseason. Those receivers were AWFUL.

That fife guy looked pretty good though…hate to say this, but i hope he does worse in the coming games – he keeps that up and he’ll be 2nd string and palko will be fighting that geezer for 3rd string.

I was yelling at the TV for Fife to stop playing well.

Comment by Carmen 08.06.07 @ 8:19 am

Then again, palko did have the most yards of any of them…if he just wouldn’t have forced that INT he would have been the best. I guess there’s a few more games for him to bring it…
