This Year’s Bias

If you care, the ESPN/USA Today Coaches preseason poll is out. Nothing that really stuns me. What I wanted to see was the coaches voting breakdown.

The Big East has 4 coaches in the voting pool of 60.

  • Randy Edsall, UConn
  • Steve Kragthorpe, Louisville
  • Rich Rodriguez, WVU
  • Greg Schiano, Rutgers

Here’s how the rest of the number of voting coaches looks by conference:

  • ACC — 6
  • Big 11 — 7
  • Big 12 — 6
  • Pac-10 — 5
  • SEC — 7
  • Notre Dame — 1

—————–

  • MAC — 6
  • C-USA — 6
  • MWC — 4
  • WAC — 4
  • Sun Belt — 4

Any idea what the criteria are to get a vote? I remember that Walt took his with him when he left.

Why not just have all 119 D1-A coaches vote (or however many there are)? It’s one thing to attempt some statistical sampling, but if thats’ their angle, why have over 50% of the coaches vote?

I love that Spurrier votes for Duke every year, to the ire of so many others; he’s basically just announcing to everyone he thinks the system is ridiculous, which it clearly is…

No wonder the big 11 has so many teams in the top ten – 64% of the coaches have votes, more than any other conference.

They should let all the coaches vote – its the coaches poll FCS, not the big 11 poll, or any other conference.

Speaking of coaches…Michael Irvin gave DW a mention during his long, but very well done Pro FB HOF induction speech tonight. Now on the subject of this post, why would the BE, ACC and Big 12 have exactly half of their coaches get a vote, while the SEC and Big 11 get more than half? And why the hell does the ND coach have a vote at all?

“Someone” has to represent the “independents” (wink, wink).

The same reason they get a BCS bowl if they finish the season…and i think they may have to have a winning record too…maybe…
