Two new positions inside the Pitt basketball offices are being filled. Former point guard Brandin Knight was named Director of Men’s Basketball Operations while Mark Rhodehamel will take over the position of Director of Women’s Basketball Operations.

The position the Knight is taking over became open once David Cox left after a short tenure here in order to take a spot down at Georgetown.

Knight, who served the 2006-07 academic year as Pitt’s Program Assistant/Video Coordinator, will manage the day-to-day operations of the men’s basketball program, serve as liaison to athletic department officials as well as coordinate student-athletes’ practice, game and daily schedules.

Rhodehamel, who will now do similar jobs for the women’s team, has done a ton of other jobs for Pitt. Some of them include assisting as tournament manager for the Women’s NCAA Basketball Tournament held at the Pete, producing presentations for facilities updates and tournament operations, as well as overseeing operations for several athletic program events including football, gymnastics, wrestling, volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball.

AG lit it up today, shooting 9/10 (but back to crappy FT, 5/9) with 9 boards, game high 23 points in the win against…the Utah Jazz and Levon Kendall. Kendall had his best game, 5/7 for 11 points – best total so far and highest minutes too, 22.

Kendall even gets a mention in the recap –

Did AG and Gray both feel comfortable because it was like practice for the last 4 years?

How does Brandon Knight, help this team? He is not a recruiter….does anyone have any thoughts on this one?

Even if that’s true, he can’t go out and recruit anyway. Maybe they figure his strength is one on one with the recruits once they’re on campus for visits. I would think a 24 year old guy who had a sniff in the NBA (rather than a 50 year old geezer in a suit) would relate better to the kids once they are here. Whereas, the older coach on the road would do better with the kids’ coaches and parents.

Frankly, I like the move. Cox produced nothing for us and having a former player, especially as good a one as Knight was is going to be a huge asset. You cant tell me that an 18 year old kid wouldn’t love to hang around Brandon.

You wouldn’t see some old guy laying on the floor or sitting around with the players at the summer league games. Knight was there every day and he is closer in age to them. Since he can’t go on the road anyways to recruit, I don’t see a problem here. I can’t imagine another person the kids on the team would get along with better.

Also, he’s from Pitt. I’d rather have a good person from Pitt have the job and represent the University than someone else.

I don’t have a problem with Knight as Director of Basketball Operations. Now if he was promoted to Assistant Coach then we have a problem since he has very limited experience in war room type situations. I can see Knight as an assistant in a couple of years and he will be a great asset since he loves the city. Congrats to him.

Good points all…I guess to that extend it does make sense…hey chas, any news on the football recruiting front? How many scholarships do we have left, considering it has been reported that 3-4 players will be leaving the team this year, and who do you think will be the next to commit to the team…also are we ever going to get any linebackers? Thanks in advance.

You will not find a bigger fan than me for Knight-however, I don’t thnk he’s cut out for coaching.
