The Pitt Athletic Department has confirmed the new logo through a press release to the media, an e-mail to Panther Club members, and on the website.

The University of Pittsburgh’s torch-cut Panther head, first unveiled in 1997, is being reintroduced with a sleeker, more polished look. The new mark is the result of the creative efforts of the Pitt Athletic Department and Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC).

I called that they would use the word “sleeker”. By the way, we also know who to blame for coming up with this.

But wait, there’s more of this drivel…

The new Panther head will be a secondary mark for Pitt Athletics. The primary logo will remain the arching block-style PITT, first introduced in 2005. The PITT logo will continue to be the featured mark on the uniforms for each of the University of Pittsburgh’s 19 intercollegiate teams.

“We have been known as Pitt for more than a century and that name and logo will continue to be our primary identity,” Athletic Director Jeff Long said. “After receiving consistent public feedback, we felt the time was right to give our Panther head a more refined, contemporary look and one that is easily reproduced and recognized.”

Merchandise with the “sleeker” Panther will be available in stores beginning July 2. Those of you who can’t wait that long can shop on the Pitt online store which is carrying the new clothing as we speak.

Ok. I’m happy that they’re keeping the block letter PITT as the primary logo, and the new panther head will be just a secondary. I can live with this, until they decide to make another change in 3-4 yrs; like they usually do. 🙁

I am not happy it sucks! I will not anything with that POS on it. I normally spend $300.00 to 500.00 per year on this crap but not now.

It’s a Thundercat.

I’m still trying to figure out how embarrassing this will be. Will it be emblazoned on the basketball court? Or just a small patch on the football pants? God help Pitt if this is more of the former than the latter.

It’s kind of understandable — fans were complaining that the panther head was too jaggedy and hard to tell what it was. So they streamlined it. Unfortunately it’s still pretty stupid looking, in all new ways. It still looks more like the beasts from Ghostbusters than a mountain lion.

I agree with JLA that it will be pretty tragic if they ever put this on center court or the helmet sides or something. I’m not in love with the arched-block Pitt either, but it’s the better of the two.

I’m not ready to blame the AD office as much as some of you are. I don’t know what goes on or what they’re told by the merchandise people or shoe company people or graphic designers or whatever. But whoever those people are, they suck at their jobs. Or at least the job they do for Pitt. I’ve seen high schools that have better logos and uniforms than Pitt.

GOOD CALL on the Ghostbusters dog-beasts look-alike.

I think we should just change our name to the Navy/Notre Dame Ghostbuster Dog-Beasts.

You guys dont think like good salesmen… What they are trying to do is spike sales! Everyone goes and buys all their pitt gear before it comes out, cause they dont want the dog on it. Pitt makes great money. Then they scrap the whole idea all together and leave the logo the same… or just be gay and decide to put it on. BUT ITS ALL IN THE SALES!!! haha

I’m going to have to agree with dan and bill… Ghostbuster-Dog Beasts it is…

It’s dumb looking, but at least it doesn’t look like a dog.

I like Lagrange HS’s panther. Simple and dignified.

[…] This hasn’t been a good week for AD Long. There was the leaking of the new Panther/dog/mutant/dino/thing head logo that was widely panned. […]

I am with Pete! Add a few teeth to Lagrange’s Logo and you have a neat logo that looks like a Panther instead of a Dog/Chipmunk.
