Pitt-Auburn: Open Thread

Sorry, had a lot of off-line things to do. Just got back. Fire away.

Halftime: Pitt leads 44-39. Pitt shooting really well, but Aurburn hanging tough.

I never got to post this link yesterday, but Auburn basketbal has been struggling mightily with getting anyone to show up for the games.

The average announced attendance at Auburn’s previous home games is 3,160. However, the realistic number is much closer to just 2,000 per game.

“It hasn’t been great,” Lebo notes. “We’re used to it. It’s been hard for our guys.”

In an effort to help the needy during the holiday season as well as increase attendance for the game against the Panthers, there will be free admission with an unwrapped toy as part of a Toys for Tots drive. Tickets for the general public are just $10 and student tickets are free to the first 500 and only $2 after that.

“They said when I got here that you’ve got to bring in better non-conference people in here to play, and I don’t know if we can get any better than this one,” Lebo notes.

It’s not like the football team had a game yesterdy.

Final: Here’s the box score. Despite free tickets, they only got around 6500 for this game, officially. Fields had a horrible game — probably his worst as a Panther, Kendall didn’t do any scoring but led in assists with 5 and grabbed 9 rebounds, Gray with a workmanlike double-double (16 points, 12 rebounds) and 6-7 on free throws. Antonio Graves provided the 1st half spark with 12 of his 14 points for the game and 5-5 shooting in the half.

Look at ESPN’s gamecast it looks as though Sam Young started at PF instead of Kendall. Can anyone confirm?

“How to survive as a jump shooter if you don’t play defense?” What the announcer jokingly wanted to talk about at halftime.

Comment by steve 12.03.06 @ 3:54 pm

Wearing ’em down, as per usual.

Sam Young has not played much at all.

17 turnovers…

If Auburn could shoot the three like Lebo did we’d be getting blown out.

phew, thanks A.G.

Need to make some free throws.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 12.03.06 @ 5:01 pm

In any case, these announcers are terrific.

Comment by steve 12.03.06 @ 5:02 pm

Steve, I assume you’re watching on Comcast. Who’s announcing and are you being sarcastic. I’m following on CSTV Gametracker.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 12.03.06 @ 5:06 pm

free throw shooting almost cost them this one. It always surprises me when guys who have played basketball all their lives and practice year round cant make free throws???

Comment by Rex 12.03.06 @ 5:10 pm

I thought we learned not to stop playing offense with a lead verus Louisville in the Big East tournament last season. Apparently not, but this will probably help Dixon realize that it is not a good idea. Way too many turnovers, but I will take the win. Nice to see us return to form from behind the arc. That will be a strength for us most nights. Kendall played his worst game since his sophmore year (not boxing out and fouling on the perimeter). Auburn played well, but they had no business being in that game down the stretch. I hope the players and coaches realize they almost lost by being lazy and conservative with a lead. Oh, and the foul shooting down the stretch was difficult to watch. A lot of things for us to work on and I’m sure we will.

Comment by Omar 12.03.06 @ 5:12 pm

Anyone miss some of the end of the game? My Comcast switched to a scheduled infomercial at 5:00 p.m. for a few minutes before switching back to the game.

Comment by PittHoops 12.03.06 @ 5:14 pm

Dave, I watched the internet feed on CSTV. Sorry, can’t recall their names. Whomever, they put Vitale et al to shame…fair/balanced and analytical.

They were emphatic about Auburn’s successful use of the high pick and roll.

Speed does kill.

Comment by steve 12.03.06 @ 5:14 pm

I’m surprised Pitt let it get that close. One thing I’ve noticed about them this year: They’re letting teams stick around a little bit.

In the past, they’d take a small lead into halftime then pull away early or about the middle of the second half. They did that this game, but let Auburn crawl back into it due to turnovers and missed free throws. That scares me a little bit.

Also, didn’t see the box score, but did Sam Young get in? I don’t remember seeing him much (if at all).

I think Auburn is the best team we’ve played, and playing on the road helped us (even though the environment was less that hostile).

Comment by PittHoops 12.03.06 @ 5:17 pm

This was definitely Pitt’s most difficult game thus far because it was on the road, but I think that UMASS was a little bit better than Auburn. The high pick and roll worked for them for awhile, but we made some adjustments during the game that put an end to the easy baskets. The biggest problems in my opinion were the turnovers and defensive rebounding. We gave up way too many offensive rebounds.

Comment by Omar 12.03.06 @ 5:24 pm

I agree, Omar. I just looked at the box score, and Auburn only shot 3-20 from 3 point range. If they even hit a couple more of those, that would have made it MUCH closer. Pitt was really fortunate today. Auburn only averages about 2,000-3,000 fans per game. I think if that was a more hostile environment, we could have really been in trouble.

Comment by PittHoops 12.03.06 @ 5:34 pm

They may average 2-3K, but they will bring in a lot more people against the #2 team in the country. I listened on the radio, and it sounded pretty loud there. Even so, 2-3K can still be pretty loud when you let them stay in the game that long. Glad to see we were able to win, but I would like to stop letting less talented teams hang in so long.

Comment by Scott 12.03.06 @ 5:47 pm

….

here in Philly couldn’t pick up the gm. and I’m a Comcast subscriber — looked through every channel listing and could’ve been certain it’d be broadcasted … just couldn’t find it … no dice. Anyone else in the region have the same difficulty, I’m wondering? (sh*t, we’re ranked #2 in AP, yes?) Disappointing, really; haven’t seen a bball game yet ….

Comment by Neil 12.03.06 @ 5:56 pm

i missed the game so all i’m going on right now is the AP report and the box score. sam again played very little- only 5 minutes. does anybody that watched know why? he only took one shot and had only one turnover. perhaps he is struggling to adjust to the 3.

Newsflash: Football season is now officially over. Cinci gets the International Bowl bid.

Comment by Joshua 12.03.06 @ 7:43 pm

Thank god Auburn shot like crap. Otherwise we’d have lost.

Comment by Dennis 12.03.06 @ 7:50 pm

Auburn always shoots like crap. Pitt pulled away in the middle of the second half and then took their foot off the pedal. The game was not really that close. Have some perspective, Kansas already has two losses. Pitt won a sloppy game on the road. No big deal.

Comment by Omar 12.03.06 @ 8:03 pm

I had other responsibilities this evening – a kiddie birthday party – but got to listen to almost the entire game on the radio. Listening to the last 5-7 minutes of the game, I believe I can accurately say that Gray barely touched the ball and I don’t know if he even took at shot during that period. I know I’m a broken record, but will this ever be a disciplined team? I don’t know who to blame it on: the players who almost uniformly lose IQ points and motivation once they establish a double-digit lead, or Dixon, who can’t seem to get his team to stop being such dumb fucks and maintain their intensity once they get a double-digit lead.

I don’t care if they have won the last two games, Dixon can not look at these performances and be anything other but disappointed. Don’t say a win is a win. They should beat a team like Auburn by 20. They should beat a team like RMU by 30. These are the same problems they had last year.

If the final four is really their goal – which is what I keep hearing these guys say – they sure as hell have not demonstrated that the last two games.

Comment by Carmen 12.03.06 @ 8:27 pm

The announcers were from the South. The game was a Comcast Sports South broadcast. I think one of the guys doing the cast was an Auburn alumn.

Auburn is not a great team and most of their players are young/inexperienced. They played good today and in particualr inside. The inside play, their quickness, and the plethora of Pitt TOs kept them in the game and made it close at the end.

As for Pitt it was hairy there at the end but thank goodness Auburn started clankin on the foul shots as well.

Young came in the first half and was not in long before he stepped into a double team on the baseline and turned the ball over. Dixon took him out and I did not see him in again. Dixon also yanked Cook out after a TO and pulled Graves out after he took a bad shot early in the shot-clock.

This is the first all-Dixon team this year and he seems to want to let the guys know that it is his way or the bench.

Ramon looked great, Graves looks so much better than last year, and Young looks out of place a the 3 spot.

It was my first time watching them and they seemed to be little out of sinc but they won.

Comment by Kenny 12.03.06 @ 8:39 pm

Auburn is not a bad team. They played Oklahoma State to a stand-still and played Wisconsin tough as well, both on neutral courts. We all need to be realistic. Every win is not going to be by 25 points. And who cares if it is?

Comment by Omar 12.03.06 @ 8:41 pm

Dixon will use this game as a teaching tool for the team. I can just hear him telling them “You guys play like you did today in Madison and we most likely will lose and probably lose big!”

Still they won and like someone said they did not lose to Oral Roberts!!!

Comment by Kenny 12.03.06 @ 8:49 pm

I know I’m being harsh, but I really do think they have a discipline problem. Again, I did not see the game, but from what I heard, Auburn did not play even a great game. They were in the game because the Panthers allowed them be in it. That’s the kind of thing that will hurt them against good teams, like a mid-major in the round of 16! I just think this could be a particularly special team and hate to see these sorts of mental issues.

That said, they managed to win even with crappy performances. I just hope we see some superb performances these next few games.

Comment by Carmen 12.03.06 @ 9:29 pm

It is not so much a discipline problem as it is one of players making wrong decisions and not playing within the framework of the coach’s gameplan both offensively and defensively.

Comment by Kenny 12.03.06 @ 9:35 pm

Neil,
Also from Philly area and never get the games on TV. Although I have seen many games through internet. I subscribe to a service thorugh the PITT web site and it works great. Only $8/mth and I’ve already seen NorthEastern, Oakland, UMass, Florida St & Auburn. 5 games for $8. Much better than any other TV/Cable offer. Also watched games where internet access is available. I don’t have to be at my house. Here is what I wrote on a previous post under “Finally There”…

Just an FYI. You can go to http://www.pittsburghpanthers.com and pull up the men’s hoop schedule. There you can click on the game and get options to watch or listen to it. The service is only $7.95 per month and I plan on cancelling after basketball season. So far I watched a few games through the internet and it works very well. Sometimes a little slow, but most of the time it is like watching on TV. I know the Auburn Game is covered to watch, but all games are not. Worst case, you can listen to it. Good luck with it!

This is totally off subject, but does anyone know the name of the song that the Pitt football team comes out to?
