So Pitt Could Be #1

It’s a big deal, insofar as the team has never been ranked #1 in basketball. Heck even RMU, Pitt’s next opponent is hoping so, since it will be the first time they have played a #1 team at that time.

This early in the season, though, it is also a big target on the team’s back. Actually, I was going to argue that was a negative. Now I’ve changed my mind. One of the questions about Pitt, that may not be fair, but history requires asking. How can this Pitt team do with all the expectations they have on them?

Every team, every group of players are different. Yet, if we are willing to point out (sometimes gleefully) how other teams always blow it in the big moment, the same has to be asked and proven otherwise of Pitt.

Not in the ESPN Coaches Poll: 3rd behind Ohio State and UCLA. aarrgghh

No freakin’ respect! They pound FSU when the Big East pre-season player of the year has under 10 points and still no respect. Incredible.

Actually, for the players, may be a good thing. Keeps that chip on their shoulder.

Ohio State is going to get pounded by UNC on Wednesday anyway. It will be a short stay at #1 for them.

No love in either poll. As much as I would have liked to see us #1, this may provide some motivation for the next few games. maybe its better to play with a chip on our shoulder.

Pitt is #2 in the AP Top 25 (behind UCLA) and #3 in the ESPN/USA Today Poll (behind Ohio State and UCLA). The problem for the Panthers is, UCLA only plays one Top 25 team (Texas A&M at home) until the end of the year. So barring a major upset, UCLA might be sitting #1 for several weeks.

While I’m upset that they’re not #1, I can understand UCLA being voted ahead of them. Thus far, they have had the two quality wins against top 25 teams.

A lot of voters must have changed their mind in both polls. Pitt was ahead of UCLA in both and is now soundly behind in both.

I was really hoping to see them be #1 for the first time, but what can you do. UCLA has to play a tough Texas A&M team in a couple of weeks, so hopefully, they will stumble a little.

PittHoops,

Rational reasoning there, but how often do pollsters just go lockstep in promoting the next highest ranked team to the spot vacated by a losing one?

Only when it’s any team but Pitt I guess.

Sour grapes but I’m pissed.

I agree with UCLA being #1 but OSU ahead of us, I am not so certain. We will see what The Ohio State University is all about on Wednesday. Go PITT!

Way too early to worry about rankings and/or getting slighted in the polls. We should not concern ourselves with that which we cannot control. Pitt just needs to focus on improving each night and preparing itself for a brutal Big East schedule. This could be a fun ride. I am not going to let perceived media bias spoil it for me.

I was upset that pitt didnt get voted #1, just because I wanted to see a pitt team ranked 1. i wanted the newspaper framed, a few more saved. i remember we had a few chances a couple years ago, but lost on some last minute stuff to syracuse at their place.

overall, it doesnt matter who is where right now. no one is going undefeated, and its all about playing your best in march. but it would still be fun…
