One Little Thing

Anyone else watch much of the UConn-Rutgers game last night? UConn, if not for it’s own ineptitude and RU’s defense, had a real shot. RU scored 2 of its 3 TDs off of special teams and defense. UConn, going into that game had the 2nd worst run defense in the Big East. They held Ray Rice to under 80 yards. Care to guess how?

”They packed the box,” Rice said. ”They did a great job. I’m just happy we came out with a win. That’s the biggest thing: we’re 8-0.”

Someone send a tape of that to DC Paul Rhoads.

The Huskies have the best pass defense in the BE, in part because their run defense is so porous it’s easier to run. The Huskies, understood that their best shot on defense was to sell-out against the run, trust in their secondary and the fact that Teel and his receivers suck (11-24, 0 TD, 1 INT). Doing that also limited the best receiving weapon on the Scarlet Knights, TE Clark Harris since he had to stay and block most of the time (only 2 catches).

Now I’m getting pissed about the Rutgers game again.

Chas,
I was felt the same way. I couldn’t help but notice some of the schemes that UCONN called to counteract Rutgers running game. Pitt certainly has a better all-around defense than UCONN, especially corners and DB’s. I can’t understand!

I was watching. It was disgusting. Rhoads needs to go. He’s an idiot.

Comment by Whigsboy 10.30.06 @ 9:55 am

Yeah, pissed all over again. UCONN was not stopped by the vaulted Rutgers defense either, Brown had 28 carries for 199 yards.

I completely blame the Pitt coaches for that loss.

Where are all the posters that said Rutgers is such a great team? I bet they think that Connecticut should be in the top-25 as well. Rutgers quarterback and receivers are just awful. Connecticut did most of there damage on the ground which makes me question Cavanaugh’s decision to abandon the run so early. Pitt should not have lost that game.

Chas,

Over and over, we all agree the DC simply does not adjust, please, let’s all pray that Rhodes moves on and some fool will hire him for a head coaching position.

This confirms everything we already knew. That is why so many of us were disgusted after the Rutgers game and it makes it damn hard to buy the “we are making progress” bs line. If this wasnt the nail in Rhodes coffin I dont know what is. Where are Pitt’s big time contributors, shouldnt they be demanding Rhodes go? I was just starting to calm down over the Rutgers loss but this just ignites the spark again.

Another game was the Indiana – MSU game. Indiana just beat the daylights out of MSU, the same team that proceeded to stomp us at home. Has anyone in the local media called for Rhodes to resign or at least speak about what the hell is going on?

Easy now. Practice your rhythmic breathing …

Likely more people tuned into CN8 to witness the thrashing of VT by the Big Green.

Fire Rhoads! Let him be the DC at Stanford!

My take on the game was this: the Pitt-UConn game in 2 weeks does not look so much like a sure ‘W’ anymore. We, obviously, struggle against the run. UConn’s backup RB rushed for more than 200 yds against a defense that shut down our running game.
I agree with the fire Rhodes sentiment, but we have other problems too.

Winning 2 out of the last 4 would be a good season in my opinion. Our favorite little DC will be assessed by Wanny then, though I don’t like his chances of being retained. Letting him go before the season is over will not go well with recruits or other possible coaching candidates. There will be drama, hopefully it’s the good kind.

Not sure how you can say that Rutgers is over rated when they are undefeated at 8-0 and placed at #15 in the polls. It’s not like anyone has said they were a top 5, or even top 10 team. They struggled against Conn and won – which is what good (nobody on this Blog has ever said Rutgers was great, just good ) teams do. Personally, I think Rutgers was having a let down after the PITT game. Their real tests will come against WVU and Louisville. Actually I think all the BE real tests will come against the Bowl opponents because I can’t remember any non-con scheduling challenges other than Louisville – Miami so it’s very hard to gage just how good the three unbeaten BE teams actually are (hence the national media debate).

What really seems to be happening is that some people just can’t get past the fact that Rutgers might have really developed a good football program. I’m don’t understand why that’s so hard to believe. They did, and are doing, exactly what PITT did with Harris in the ’90s. Made a commitment to Div 1-A football, spent money on facilities and hired a proactive, energetic coach. This just happens to be the payoff years for Schiano’s planning. Maybe they lose the rest of their games and drop in the polls, or maybe they get stronger and win some more, who knows? But, what ever happens I’ll give them credit where its due – they are a good team that’s having a good year.

What is disheartening is how Conn adapted to stop Rutger’s strength and did just that – when PITT’s staff either couldn’t see the problem/solution or was too timid to deploy it. After the second year of a coach’s tenure is a good time for changes, and I’ll bet nobody would be surprised if DW pulled the trigger on the D Coordinator.

Just something to chew on re: Pitt/Conn

Uconn
7th in the Big East in Total Offensive Benefit. Third from the bottom in offensive drive efficiency.

7th in the Big East in Total Defensive Benefit.
Second to last in defensive drive efficiency.

Pittsburgh
Third in the Big East in Total Offensive Benefit.
Third in offensive drive efficiency.

Third in the Big East in Total Defensive Benefit.
Second in defensive drive efficiency.

To me, it appears as if Pittsburgh is still the significantly more impressive team, at least from a statistical theory perspective.

“Where are all the posters that said Rutgers is such a great team? I bet they think that Connecticut should be in the top-25 as well.”

I’m confused. First of all, I was too busy watching NFL football on Sunday night to even remember that this game was on. (I refuse to watch Sunday night college football games. It’s just ludicrous.) Second of all, they still won. Your argument that Rutgers is no good because they’re QB and WRs are bad holds no ground until somebody BEATS THEM. We couldn’t, and neither has anybody else on Rutgers’ schedule. I’m sure the Louisville and West Virginia games will go a lot further to proving Rutgers’ claim as a good football team that this game.

Don’t be mad at Rutgers for squeaking by in two games, be mad because Pitt couldn’t get their collective heads out of their asses to put eight or nine guys in the box.

Reed, I couldn’t possibly agree with you more.

Oh, and Pitt will beat UConn, just like Rutgers did. It’ll be an ugly, ugly game.

Picking on one aspect of a team – the weakness – and projecting it as to whether that team is good or not is an exercise in fantasy. Granted Rutgers passing game could be better, as could WVU’s (or PITT’s running game) etc…, but the measure of a football team is its TEAM, and its TEAM play. WVU makes up for Pat White’s shortcomings by not having to throw the ball, although White has a 153.0 effeciency rating which ain’t bad. Rutgers throws a great backfield at you, so Teel can manage the game, and throw the occasional TD pass. Pitt can get yards through the air so we can hide our lack of consistent positive yardage on the ground. All of these teams win games because they outscore the other teams.

It appears that some see teams in black or white, and either a team has to be great across the board or it sucks. That’s not college football, and that’s not sports. Not every good team is going to be strong in all aspects of the game – unless you’re Oklahoma in the ’70s.

Hmmm…I’m glad to see RU doing so well. It helps the BE Conference. I was at the RU game with Pitt, and RU was definitely the better TEAM that night. However, simply put, their QB and WR’s are not just bad, they are horrible (on the level of our running game last year). They should have put up 40+ points on us. I am fairly certain that this lack of a passing game will bite them when they play WVU and Louisville. All in all though, their program is headed in the right direction. If you added a decent QB and WR to their current team (not great, just decent), I could see them being Top 10. Without these elements Top 20 to 25 seems about right by seasons end.

Comment by Frank 11.01.06 @ 1:31 pm

It will be interesting to see how the final standings of the BE shake out. The only thing I’m pulling for is that either WVU or Louisville go undefeated if PITT does not beat either one. I actually could see WVU in the championship game, and am getting tired of all the SEC butt sniffing talk about how a one loss team from that conference should move ahead of an undefeated WVU. Talk about changing horses in the middle of the stream. You set the ground rules and then abide by them.

This could be the year the the BE sends three teams to bowls against quality competition, and it will only help all the BE teams if they represent well by winning. I’m thinking Rutgers has two losses at the end, Louisville one and WVU none. PITT could be the spoiler though.

Am nervous about the USF game, and didn’t think I’d be, although I believe we will return to form we have shown this year against the lesser BE teams.
