There will be player interviews, puff pieces and the assorted stuff coming out of today’s actual Big East Media Day. Then there is the stuff surrounding the day that is already out there. Stories that came out just before or today. Or the tweeted breaking stories of some interest.

If you have followed some of the media, you know that those going to Big East Media Days were really looking forward to golf and the lobsters last night. The media inevitably talk it up, and well, the waistlines reflect it.

So I have a hard time believing that the Big East would actually move the Media Day to NYC (hattip to On the Banks).

The Pac-10’s savvy decision to bring all 10 coaches and four of its star quarterbacks to New York last week struck a nerve with Big East coaches and athletic directors.

“This is our market, and we have to make sure we protect it,” one AD told The Post.

Could that mean moving the league’s media day from Newport to New York? That idea could be gathering steam.

The media would bitch and moan to no end, so don’t buy it. Besides, they finally got the Cinci newspaper to spring for sending one of their guys to media day.

While no one apparently broke the legendary 9 lobsters in one sitting record, Greg Romeus and Jonathan Baldwin apparently were respectable with 6 apiece. No word on Pinkston who I thought had a great shot at the record.

While on the topic of overindulgence, The Octonion returns with some disturbing mascot action.

Of course the Big East is feeling a little relaxed. They didn’t get raided — nearly expanded to 12/20 — and everyone gets to keep making fun of UCF and Memphis rumors.

Sorry, not worried about when Rutgers gets the Big 10/12 call. My bet is on the Big 10/12 stays pat for a few years. Expansion frenzy is paused once more. It’s still likely a when not if, and the Big East should know that.

The only significant “breaking news” out of the Big East Media Day is that the Big East will now issue weekly injury reports, a la the NFL, with “probable, questionable, doubtful and out” as the standards.

Can’t help but think this smacks of the Big East’s consultant Paul Tagliabue’s NFL-esque idea. Make the Big East more accessible for gamblers and that will drive more interest and TV ratings.

The Big East, though, claims this was the brainchild of the Big East football coaches.

Spokesman John Paquette said the coaches came up with the idea this weekend, which is interesting. If all the coaches comply with the policy, then everybody will be on equal footing when it comes to injury news, instead of one team being coy and the other being open.

The ACC already does this.

[…] NFL-style injury reports – weekly indication of what level of owie various players have. Chas Rich of Pitt Blather put it best – it looks like a move to help the gamblers and in turn, drive more interest towards the […]

On College Football Live DW mentioned Pitt having one of the top four or five toughest schedules in college football. Does anyone know where I can find a strength of schedule ranking for 2010? CBS Sportsline used to put one out but I cant seem to find anything…just curious.

Since three of our first five games are Utah, Miami, and Notre Dame we have certainly padded our non con.

Sheard took a deal for disorderly conduct plus restitution and an apology to the victim. Didn’t think he’d get stuck with the Agg Assault on that one. Great news for Sheard personally, since the felony went away, but I’m not sure what Wanny should do as far as a suspension.

Worth a read, Pitt’s recruiting success in Joisey:

“However, the real winner of this game could very well be the Pitt Panthers as the Big East power boasts an astonishing nine different players in the game – Wright, Belton, Alston and Nova from Jersey and Poteat, Chestnut, Kline, Lafayette Pitts from Woodland Hills and Artie Rowell from Central Dauphin.”

Wow, I got two counts of disorderly in college for buying beer with a fake ID. Had I known that throwing a guy through a window then continuing to beat the crap out of him was the same charge then I would have gotten my moneys worth. Good break for Pitt.

Courtesy of Dennis Dodd at CBS Sports: “Also, don’t expect a name change for the iconic conference. The 12-team league will remain the Big Ten.” How can they get away with this? What will the Big 12 (11…10) do??

Comment by merlin 08.04.10 @ 2:53 pm

Pabs, the fact that it wasn’t refiled as a misdemeanor assault probably means there was way more mutual combat than what the media is reporting. Criminal mischief or disorderly conduct is proper for destruction of private property in instances like this. Actually, you were lucky you weren’t charged with a felony for using the fake.

Wanny reinstates Sheard!

I don’t think this was the right decision.

For this reason: Pitt’s image

Comment by Steve 08.04.10 @ 5:47 pm

From the Trib:
“Frankly, from my experience, it was handled no differently than any other fist fight.”
Does he mean a street fight or a fight during a hockey game?
Does the “settlement” mean that Sheard’s opponet’s name will also be on Sheard’s signing bonus’ check?

Comment by BigGuy 08.04.10 @ 6:18 pm

Who cares about image..Pitt needs to be 1-0..this is a good move on Pitts side. a lot of schools would have done the same thing.

Comment by mike 08.04.10 @ 6:27 pm

Mike, here’s a player who threw somebody through a window and continued pummeling him while being restrained by 2 policemen.

Settlement, shmettlement, Wanny’s gotta act above the law.

Comment by Steve 08.04.10 @ 7:04 pm

BigGuy, even though the complaining witness went through a window, I don’t think this should have been charged as an agg assault from the start (I say this as a prosecutor). I’m sure PA requires “serious bodily injury” as an element of agg assault, which is not present here. A bunch of broken glass doesn’t make something a felony.

If there was mutual combat/consent, then I think in PA the offense is merely a Class C misdemeanor. Sheard’s defense attorney seems to be making the point that there was mutual combat (i.e. a fistfight). If that was the case, and the DAs must have agreed to some degree to make this plea happen, and there was no serious bodily injury to the complaining witness, then this was the correct thing to do LEGALLY. However, I think Wanny would have earned some points from the media if he made Sheard sit for Utah.

Comment by Greg in New Orleans 08.04.10 @ 7:26 pm

Steve..I just don’t see the point of a suspension in this case. Fights happen all the time. I don’t like what he did, but any big school that thi would have happened at he would have gotten off. Especially playing Utah on national TV. Different case if its ysu.

Comment by mike 08.04.10 @ 8:12 pm

Greg, I defer to your expertise on the law. You sound like you know what you are talking about. Having said that, do you think that the guy Sheard beat-up may now be lawyer shopping for a civil law suit?

Comment by BigGuy 08.04.10 @ 8:21 pm

Mike, I believe a suspension would not be warranted if Sheard would’ve stopped when the police interceded.

But I feel, given the facts, it is warranted and it doesn’t matter who we play first.

What’s the message Wanny’s sending? Taken to the extreme, it’s OK to fight off an official who’s trying to intercede in an on-field fight.

I know, it’s a stretch. But it’s a stretch I’m sure the media will jump on.

The Big Ten has already added Nebraska and the Huskers will play in the Big Ten in 2011. The PAC Ten has a new name and two new teams primed to start in 2011 or 2012. The ACC along with Big East nemesis BC has a new contract that increases revenue about 2.5 over the Big East’s current contract. The Big 12 has a new configuration and eliminated its football title game in one weekend’s round of negotiations. The SEC is still the king of college football. The Big East, on the other hand, has a commissioner who says the same excuses over and over, refuses to renegotiate the league’s grossly underfunded contract with ESPN, hires Paul Tagliabue but keeps him under wraps, puts a gag order on coaches, and is still reliving the drama of 2003. I don’t think Marinatto knows what a fan is or wants. The university presidents including Nordenberg say nothing and apparently are doing nothing to ensure the football teams have a future in the conference. It doesn’t look too promising, does it?

Well BigGuy you can always sue. I’m not sure how great a personal injury claim this would be, but in a weird way it makes to okay the dismissal of the felony assault to maximize this other guy’s future claim against Sheard. If convicted of a felony, Sheard likely would not be drafted, but now his stock should only take a minor hit. Sheard has more value without a conviction to a potential claimant.

But… the only description of that night’s events are from the arresting officer and that description does not address how this fight started, what the involved parties’ relationships are to each other, or any other relevant circumstance. That sort of information, when revealed, can(and probably would here) prevent the victim from bringing a viable civil suit.

Greg – Can I get you on a retainer? Thanks for the insight.

I do like how the Trib now says “Parker was knocked through a glass door at the art gallery and suffered cuts and bruises”. Being knocked through a glass door and being “thrown” through a glass door are two totally different things. Sounds a bit like the media (and the officer possibly) had a bit of over sensationalism; which is very typical in todays day and age.

Tony in Houston, There are no BCS teams wanting to join the BE nor does Navy or ND. Most other conference’s have been in operation many decades longer than the BE existed. They control the best bowls.

Some of the problems Pitt has can be traced to the lack of support from the alumni base. Plus poor leadership prior to Nordy. I will admit one thing, why didn’t Nordy and Marniatto keep you informed on their plans. unblieveable!!!!

Greg- as a criminal D-atty who has rep Pitt players in the past, you are right on the SBI aspect of Pa Agg Assault. At best it was a mutual combat assault (M3, notwithstanding the media hype. JS probably agreed to pay restitution to his opponent/victim and the business for the door in exchange for the DC, which is a sweet deal. As far as any suspension, I think Wanny should do what Joe Pa would do to a talented starter under the same circumstances: bench him for the New Hampshire game….for the first half.

Comment by Bossdaws 08.05.10 @ 12:31 pm

Joel, said it well…The BE can only play the hand it has now…The only way could could attract another BCS School is if the super conferences happen. Then and only then can the BE seek to be one of those conferences, even then its a longshot because of the other leagues having longer, deeper roots as you have stated…Snala, thanks for the link…that was the funniest thing I’ve ever read on a sports site!
