How Did We Do?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Reed @ 7:29 am

As the article below states, team rankings for recruiting swings like a pendulum depending on the source.  Chas did a good post regarding the differences in the recruit ranking services.  I decided to look back over the last six years of PITT recruiting to see what we actually did and it is kind of interesting.

Year       Coach          Rank          Avg.         # 5* & 4*                  W/L

’12           PC               39th            3.11       1-5*  3-4*

’11           TG               47TH          2.68         2-4*                   6-7

’10          DW              17TH           3.21        1-5*  5-4*            8-5

’09          DW              31ST           3.11         5-4*                    10-3

’08          DW              25TH           3.37         3-5*  4-4*            9-4

’07          DW              8th              3.38         3-5*  8-4*            5-7

The highest ranking classes are when we had DW coming off a contract extension and the year afterward.  Our two worst classes were in the midst of the recent coaching changes. That isn’t rocket science to figure out why but I was interested in how the years stacked up in comparison.

This 2012 class ended very well and I give Paul Chryst a lot of credit for closing the recruiting season out in such a strong manner.  We probably will never know if our five defections were cases of the kids just not wanting to be at PITT or vice versa, PITT not really wanting them to accept the scholarship for any reason (which I lean toward).

I think Conwell was a player the new staff would have liked to keep but the AZ draw was too much and Conwell wanted to go to the guys who had been recruiting him.

We had some two academic casualties and  one rescinded scholarship offer for bad tweeting.

That said, Paul Chryst stated in some interviews yesterday that PITT still had some scholarship available for 2012 to use if they wanted to.  We know they are keeping one open for Standifer when he visits on Feb 10th, two days after he visits Vanderbilt.  Not sure we’ll get that one.

This was a good recruiting job by Chryst & Co. and should calms the fears PITT fans had on the rumors that Chryst wasn’t a good recruiter.  It was pretty obvious that he made the important phone calls early on to secure our top recruits; those who publicly stated they didn’t receive calls from him… well, there was a reason for that apparently.

I think we should be getting pretty excited about what the 2013 recruiting class can bring in Chryst’s second year as HC.  IMO we’ll field a decent team in 2012 and one that will be competitive in every game.  Do that and PITT becomes more of an attraction than perhaps it was this year overall.  Chryst will have established his offense and defense so recruits will see what his over-arching football philosophies are and that will help to publicly cement his ‘brand’ of football.

Maybe most importantly recruits will see how well Chryst and Bostad develop players, even in their first year.  I think this will apply to the OL especially.  We all know how they played this last season and we’ll have essentially the same personnel returning in 2012 with the addition of Ricketts.  If they can mold that group into an effective unit and get our offense going from that starting point then we’ll see other prospective OL recruits sit up and take notice.

Good class but not a great one, which is to have been expected.  But hey – when you land players like Shell, Voytik, Bisnowaty and Holtz;  players at positions of need and ones who will see playing time in 2012, or certainly in 2013… it’s a good class.

Congrats to the PITT staff for their hard work.

P/S: Sorry about the graph but I’m not messing with it any longer.

Looking at an article in the Gazette this morning, I spied that these guys, all from the “Terrific 25” who all played on the OL &/or the DL and at this point are STILL undecided. They are Ryan Hickey, Bobby Mandish, Dylan Poole and Justin Williams.

I know nothing about any of them, but,,,,, we need OL recruits and Chryst has unused scholarships in his pocket. soooo our recruiting season, IMO, is far from over. Hey FRANKCAN, what say you about any of these local kids? You’re usually ontop of this kind of info, is there a OL project player available in this group that would be worth spending a scholarship on?

Comment by Dr. Tom 02.02.12 @ 7:54 am

Dr Tom, we have players on the current roster like Shane Johnson, Artie Rowell, Arthur Doakes, Juantez Hollins, and Mark Rotheram (all FR or soph) who were higher rated than the names you listed above … and all of them except for Rowell are > 300lbs

Comment by wbb 02.02.12 @ 8:04 am

I should have added that it seems to take time for the light to go on for most of these OL … unless they are just totally physically dominant.

Remember how long it took Jacobsen (4-star) and Thomas (4-star?

There is some beef to for Bostad and Chryst to work with .. in addition to the above, we also have Turnley, Schlieper, Cory King and hpefully Jacobsen .. hopefully, half of the guys can step up

Comment by wbb 02.02.12 @ 8:08 am

I’m very excited by this coming football year.

I think Mr. Chryst has shown that he can come in, put together a decent class despite the short time and his offense was good enough to get to the Rose Bowl twice.

Barring personal problems, I can’t see a problem.

Comment by Lou Gagliardi 02.02.12 @ 8:41 am

I’m excited by the addition of an AC Cobra to the “Mutually Beneficial” ad and the side boob isn’t to shabby either

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 02.02.12 @ 9:18 am

On a basektball note any word on whether Pitt is looking at Nerlens Noel? I’d hate to see him go to UCONN or Syracuse.

Comment by Kel 02.02.12 @ 10:17 am

DR TOM there are two very high rated OLmen who have not signed with any one and one was recruited bye Bostad when he was at wisconsin his name is Alex Kozan the 12 beat OG IN THIS CLASS AND JORDAN DIAMOND OT ranked number 27WHO WAS ALSO RECUITED BYE WISCONSIN I DONT KNOW IF THERE IS ANY THING WRONG WITH THEM BUT EVERY ONE RECUITED THEM AND IF I WAS BOSTAD I WOULD BE CALLING THEM . SORRY FOR THE CAPTILS BUT MUST GO DONT HAVE TIME TO RE TYPE

Comment by FRANKCAN 02.02.12 @ 10:24 am

It’s comforting, as a Pitt fan and alum, that Pitt’s football program is still highly rated otherwise gifted high school athletes would pass on a Pitt football scholarship. That said, it’s more important for Pitt’s football program to have quality coaching, something that it lacked from last season. Coach Chryst did very well at Wisconsin, let’s hope he and his staff can teach these young athletes discipline, good sportsmanship and a winning attitude while at Pitt.

HTP!

I think the spread’s blocking scheme had a good bit to do with the offensive line’s short comings this past season. Pitt’s offensive linemen were recuited and trained to run in a pro-style. So hopefully a move back to that style and good OL coaching under Bob Bostad will make a difference.
Considering everything, I am up-beat about the team. Next year Pennsylvania is supposed be laden with talented players.

Comment by Justinian 02.02.12 @ 10:35 am

Just read on Yahoo where an Auburn recruit didn’t pick Clemson because there was no Chick Fil A on campus (even though there is one he didn’t know about.)

I would hope that Bostad uses Oakland’s recruiting assets (namely The O and Primanti Brothers) for future OL visits

Comment by wbb 02.02.12 @ 10:55 am

Always good to read old scouting reports. Here is Tino Sunseri’s on Scout.com:

He is an outstanding dual-threat quarterback that has a strong and accurate arm. He’s also very quick and can do a lot of damage running the football. Sunseri is a very poised QB, he can take a team on his back and lead them to greatness. He is a tremendous leader. He is very accurate and can thread the needle. His lack of ideal size causes people to relax until they see his arm strength and it is a lot better than most think.

Comment by Nabil 02.02.12 @ 10:56 am

Holy crap!

Who were the 6 5-star recruits we brought in back in 07 and 08?

Look at 07! Those are Florida State type numbers… why couldn’t we win the Big East all these years again?!

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 02.02.12 @ 10:56 am

Once again wbb,

A great example of why we all, myself included, look ridiculous for worrying about where some kid is going to college.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 02.02.12 @ 10:58 am

Note that Reed used Scout.com for his source which has always been Pitt-friendly.

I assume that 2 of the 5 stars were Baldwin and Hale. Note that Scout also had PSU QBs Morelli and Bolden as 5-stars.

It’s a crapshoot. Holgerson was on The Fan yesterday and said that 2 WRs he coached, Wes Welker and Justinn Blackmon, were 2-stars.

Comment by wbb 02.02.12 @ 11:05 am

Would LOVE to see an analysis of star – ranking vs. how they’ve contributed for the years listed above. It’s going to be a long time till spring…

Comment by Atlanta Panther 02.02.12 @ 11:24 am

wbb – can’t leave Uncle Sam’s off that list. In fact, I’d have them take recuits there even before Primanti’s. I know…that’s sacriledge in the burgh — too bad, Uncle Sam’s rocks! And, the walls are covered with Pitt memorabilia as a bonus.

After trying those three establishments, nobody would care that there is no Chick Fil-A on campus (although that is quite silly).

Comment by Hank the Tank 02.02.12 @ 11:35 am

Wbb and outhers dont worry next year the
DR. will be playing QB for PITT and craveing up the big east.
At QB for PITT the DR. Chad Voytik.

we will be saying the DR. is in the house
i just know this kid will be great.

Comment by FRANKCAN 02.02.12 @ 11:55 am

if memory servies … back in the mid/late 60s, we had Dr Eddie James (Dentist) throwing to Dr Doc Medich (ML baseball pitcher and M.D.) and we went 1 and 9. (may be a year or 2 off)

Comment by wbb 02.02.12 @ 12:42 pm

Hank, Uncle Sam’s is good as is Quaker Steak … but I was referring to local establishments that can’t be found on or near other campuses.

Comment by wbb 02.02.12 @ 12:59 pm

not this time when he becomes the number 1 QB
things will change i dont know how i know i just do.

Comment by FRANKCAN 02.02.12 @ 1:00 pm

well he will have more talent around him than James and Medich did

Comment by wbb 02.02.12 @ 1:04 pm

FRANKCAN did you go to Pitt? I hope you weren’t an english major

Comment by ArmPitt 02.02.12 @ 1:06 pm

Comment by Reed 02.02.12 @ 1:24 pm

wbb – I just usually stay with Scout.com for consistency, but the three big sites sometime differ greatly.

Comment by Reed 02.02.12 @ 1:26 pm

I assume it may be the normal success rate, if not better, based on the sories I have been reading about blue chip success rates.

Comment by wbb 02.02.12 @ 1:28 pm

Reed, I don’t see much difference between Scout, Rivals and ESPN .. except that Scout is much more liberal with its 5-stars than the others. I alos noted (for some time now) that they tend to give Pitt recruits higher marks than the others .. although this year it seems that ESPN was pretty kind to us.

Comment by wbb 02.02.12 @ 1:30 pm

Comment by FRANKCAN 02.02.12 @ 2:26 pm

Ha ha ha. You tell ’em FRANK.

Did any of you read the WSJ article on recruiting and signing day the other day? Not very favorable to Rivals.com. Apparently only 9% of Rivals 5Stars get drafted and only 12% of their 4Stars get drafted. Which is pretty sad as the criteria for their 5Star label is a probable 1st round draft pick. So not only did 91% of their 5stars not get drafted in the 1st round, they didn’t even get drafted at all. That is stunningly bad.

Comment by FRANKCAN 02.02.12 @ 4:38 pm

If I were rating recruit classes I would not count numbers in the equation. Unless class size leaves the school below the 85 total limit I would simply go by average stars. If a school ended below the limit of 85 on the roster then I would reduce the average star rating by, say, adding in a zero star for each slot below the 85 mark.

Also, if I ran the NCAA I would require all schools to be limited to 25 signed loi,s each year, period.

Comment by Pitt72 02.02.12 @ 6:29 pm

I’ve noticed that in past years, ESPN is not kind to Pitt, but I believe this year they gave us a higher ranking than Scout or Rivals.

Rivals murdered us this year!!

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 02.02.12 @ 7:47 pm

ESPN might be.. being kind to us this year, since they’re depending on PITT & Syracuse to drastically make ACC football ratings better. (well at least us, lol) And ACC basketball will get much more exposure in the Northeast as well, meaning better TV ratings and more advertising revenue.

armpitt doesn’t sound like a pro PITT person, suggest you change your name. haha (no really)
Don’t f*ck with FrankCan, Frank uses his own secret code to communicate with his brothers on Pitt blather. We like it and him. Capice.

Hail To Pitt !
Veritas et Virtus !

Comment by Emel 02.02.12 @ 10:33 pm

Interesting note about how these kids are ranked.

Rivals has 50 allocated spots each year for five star kids. Then for four stars it is something like players #50-#300 get them, etc… So, when you see Rivals Top One Hundred list the first fifty players will get five stars.

Scouts does their star ranks by a different criteria where Scouts isn’t locked into only so many five stars given out. Recruits are based on their potential alone. Same with four starts, etc…

Not sure how ESPN does their’s.
