Yeah, it looks like this stuff will linger for a while. There’s a bit to cover.

First up, the latest on Big East non-expansion. WVU AD Ollie Luck offered comments that are being parsed carefully among Big East partisans.

“There are two sort of questions I think that people have,” Luck said.  “One is really what are the facilities that Villanova is able to use and how do those fit into the Big East with what we have now with our football schools.  Are those really at a level that are BCS, automatic qualifier appropriate for a conference like ours?  I think that’s the first question and obviously the conference didn’t feel quite comfortable with all the information regarding what I would call the infrastructure question.”

“When we talk about adding a 10th member, the question is what does that 10th member bring and what are the other options, quite honestly,” Luck continued. “It’s sort of like buying a car, you don’t go and just look at one model.  You look around and say what are the different options, what are the different prices, and what are the plusses and minuses?  I think a lot of schools were interested in having a better sense of what other possibilities would be out there.”

Now it depends on what you focus on from there.

To me Luck seems to be saying the infrastructure question is the big issue. That the issue with PPL Park, especially with its present configuration is too small for a BCS team to support itself for very long. Without a clear timeline to even expand to 30,000 their budget projections — no matter how optimistic — become speculative or looking to run big deficits. I mean, I’ve said before that I was fine with Villanova going to 1-A, but the more I look at their plan, the more doubts and questions I have.

Their long-term budget and ability to compete should be a concern. Not knowing whether they will have a stadium that can support the program is a worry. Look at the history of programs in the BCS that hover around 30-35K in stadium size: Duke, Wake Forest, and Cinci. Yes Cinci and Wake have actually made BCS bowls, but the overall history of these programs do not suggest this is something to expect.

Of course, that’s with my biases. The boys of Nova see this as some sort of slap in the face to Villanova as not being a big enough program to for the Big East. That it is about appearances, not actual questions about how the program can operate in the long-term with such a small stadium. In fact some tie-in the the second paragraph where he talks of looking at other choices as confirmation. Apparently the idea of looking around or comparing other options is a flat out insult to Villanova.

Brian’s VUHoops piece, is actually a focus more on the impending demise of their 1-AA home in the CAA. James Madison is making infrastructure moves suggesting it is looking to jump to 1-A. Rhode Island is going to another conference. UMass is heading to 1-A and the MAC.

The UMass move is an interesting contrast to ‘Nova. Obviously they are in a basketball conference, but they wanted to see if they could pry their way into the Big East when they decided to go to 1-A football. It failed miserably, but they still continued to make the jump — at least to show that they belong at the level.  Rutgers blogger OTB (who’s own bias has been that Villanova should never be a football member), sees this as the way Villanova should go if they truly want to play 1-A football. Rather than simply because of the fear that the Big East will split and they’ll be stuck with basketball schools (not that, that shouldn’t be a legitimate fear). The fact that UMass will be playing in a mid-west conference in a stadium 90 minutes from their campus probably isn’t a plan to emulate in my view.

Now Villanova fans are still surprised how their ride to Big East football was yanked away. When Villanova made a presentation to the Big East members at the Big East Tournament, it fell flat.

According to one person in the room that day, the presentation didn’t go well, for a very specific reason. Villanova’s president, the Rev. Peter Donahue, gave more an explanation of where things stood than a sales pitch. If he wasn’t going to be a real advocate, it was natural for his brethren to wonder where the former drama professor really stood. Were they supposed to get excited about ‘Nova joining them if ‘Nova’s president couldn’t?

Now, as VUHoops points out (and rightfully I think), Villanova didn’t seem to know about the doubts and serious questions other football members had about Villanova’s plan. Honestly, until the vote was postponed, no one really believed that Villanova wasn’t getting in, even if they didn’t like it.

That falls on the Big East officials — which should not surprise anyone — failing to let Villanova know that there were doubts among the members. The only other explanations are that the Big East thought that they still had enough support to strong-arm it through the membership regardless of objections. Or they were completely clueless about a shift by members on the move. The latter seems least likely since even by mid-March there were rumors getting out that some members were unhappy with Villanova’s plans.

If Nova wants to be in the Big East by 2014, they have until May 31 to get it done. Otherwise, it gets pushed back for another year. It is still unclear how strong the opposition is to Nova.

Nobody I talked to seems to even agree on how many current Big East football schools are against it. I talked to one person at a clear anti-‘Nova school who suggested as many as six others were clearly against it in March, but none to the point that the proposal couldn’t be improved and objections dropped. Another Big East administrator said it was more like a few leaning against, but none being over-my-dead-body against. Villanova probably can’t get in unless six of the eight current football members sign off.

This isn’t going away.

Can anyone answer how the voting procedure works in terms of bringing in any new member? That is, how many schools are needed to block Nova or anyone else? And do the basketball schools all get to vote on a football issue? If so, it would seem the vote would be something like 12-4 in favor of Nova. And if that’s the case, are the 4 enough to prevent it? I guess so. Just curious what the official rules are though, if anyone knows.

again, an open invite to Nova was pre-TCU when the stability of the conference was in question. Now, the other BE members can be more selective and demanding. I believe the majority of the members will insist that Nova must ensure a 30 or 35K seating capaity of ir ain’t gonna happen.

Right on wbb. I think the 9 team Big East is better than the ACC. It’s just a matter of time before the nation is forced to accept that in 2012. I think 9 is the perfect number and it keeps the basketball schools happy by not going to 10 and 18. No need to dilute the conference with mediocrity (UCF, Houston, East Carolina, Memphis, Temple, Villanova, etc. Come on, we’re better than that!)

My first problem with Nova, as you’ve stated Chas, is how financially successful will this actually be for not only Villanova, but the conference as well. How can a 30,000 seat facility (that may or may not even get to that many seats) get enough money to support a FBS football program? We’re seeing Cincy now with their 35,000 seat stadium playing games at the Bengals stadium to get more money. Syracuse is playing some games at the Meadowlands and UConn I think is playing some games in Gilette Stadium. Villanova simply doesn’t have that option.

Another thing is appearance. Dickie V (who I hate by the way) calls it “the All-Airport team” or something along those lines. It means looking good when you step off that bus going into a road environment. In this case, the road environment is the rest of college football and at this time, is Nova the “best-looking” team for Big East football. I personally don’t think so. Does that mean that Nova can’t succeed at FBS football? No, look at UConn.

This brings me to my next point. Nova, while in a similar situation as UConn was a few years back, is not the same at all. UConn is a much bigger school with a bigger fanbase and the support of it’s state government behind it (meaning $$$). Villanova is a small private school which receives no money from the PA government. To use UConn as a reason why Nova can be financially successful or even successful at all as a Big East program does not take into account all the details involved in the situation.

It seems to me that our dear friends over in the Delaware Valley were trying to get into a BCS football conference and the money that it entails, on the cheap. Thanks but no thanks, BigEast football is the brunt of too many jokes as it is.
We don’t need to supply more ammunition to the BigEast detractors. And please don’t anyone say we need Temple.

Why not UMass? I’d rather have them in two sports than Nova in one.

Finally got to see Pat Bostick’s article in Panther Eyes. Very impressive, especially if you have to regularly read college level writing. Also very impressed with his self assessment. This kid will make us all proud of a Pitt affiliation in the years to come.

Real simple solution.

Nova needs to commit resources behind the vanity. Wanting to be D1 in the Big East is more than just saying “I think that we are ready”. The Big East business model is one driven by putting the best product and resources in front of the general public. This means facilities, recruiting, PR, coaching etc.

Nova seems to want the mercy vote of letting little brother in the conference just because they have been around for a while. Nova needs to understand that Big East Football business model is not synonomous with the Big East Basketball business model. Just because you are in one doesnt mean that you get a automatic no questions asked invitation to the other. You must bring something to the table.

As a friend of mine always says “if you are adding to it then your are taking away from it” Nova would be “taking away” from the Big East football.

Time to move on until they get their resource allocation / commitment in order.

So I just saw on Royal Blue and Mustard that Pitt’s Big East Championship rings for football arrived. I think I speak for all Pitt fans when I say destroy every last one of them just like this football team destroyed our unrealistic expectations for a good season.

Comment by Greg 04.20.11 @ 9:27 pm

By this of course I mean it better be hyped up, be on national television, and fail to live up to expectations

Comment by Greg 04.20.11 @ 9:28 pm

For those who hope Kansas or Missouri or an ACC school such as BC will want to join the BE I must say the TV contracts signed by those two leagues are such that no team there will jump to us. Our only chance seems Houston or UCF. I suggest we go after both NOW. Nova is not ready, perhaps they do not understand the difference between going to D1 and going to D1-BCS auto qualifier

Comment by OhioSteeler 04.20.11 @ 11:12 pm

We have no leverage with BC, Missouri or Kansas until either the ACC or Big 12 begins to fall apart. That will happen when and if the SEC decides to expand.

Comment by TX Panther 04.21.11 @ 10:30 am

Why does Villanova think that they even WANT to have a Division 1-A Football program??????Mike Jensen from the Philadelphia Inquirer seems to think that the next Big East Television contract for the Big East will be a real money maker..I don’t think so..since none of their teams draw more than small regional interest anyway..What would you rather watch??The Big East or the Big Ten, or the SEC or Big 12 or Pac Ten , even the ACC when the teams that are playing are Florida State or Virginia Tech or BC is playing. the rest of the teams are similar to the Big East. Villanova should stick with Basketball, just like Georgetown and Seton Hall and St John’s amd Marquette and play football at whatever their comfort level is.. If Villanova wants to do anything, they should expand the Pavillion, as opposed to pour money into a football program that isn’t even supported now

Comment by Bill Morgan 04.22.11 @ 7:19 am

This is waste of time if Nova wants to jump to the FBS level they should join the MAC where the other teams facilities are about the same, cause at this point the Big East is not that far ahead of C-USA or the MWC.They should be looking at a school like UCF who plays in a good size TV market has good on campus facilities and is on the way up quick maybe even E.Carolina too.But no way Villanova is ready to be a BCS team.CBB and CFB are 2 different animals altogether.
