Heck of a Weekend So Far

Filed under: Admin — Chas @ 7:11 pm

No, I’m not dead from all the good stuff.

Was at the in-laws for Thanksgiving. No one thought to tell me that their internet connection was fubar-red.

Went to the the Backyard Brawl on Friday then back to the in-laws. Got back home this evening.

Now, I have a night shift chat over at FanHouse to do. Stop on by.

Otherwise, I’ll be trying to restore some normalcy tomorrow.

Pitt will be pretty good next year .. with or without Shady … but they will be real good with a playmaker at QB. While a game manager is good when playing inferior teams, you often need someone who can improvise when geeting pressure or when the primary receivers aren’t open.

A further issue that a so-called ‘game manager’ is not supposed to consistently turn the ball over. For Pitt to really become the program we hope, they must be on the deinite plus side on the TO ledger.

Now for a touch of insanity … with mlb McKillop leaving and the very-mobile DEs Sheard and Romeus returning, what do you all think about a 5-2-4 defense with stand-up DEs who would read and possibly drop back in coverage? (yes, visons of H Green and R Jackson are dancing in my head!)

4:30 into the hoops game. Not looking good.
Tyrell Biggs 0-2 from 3
Dixon 0-1 from 3
Young 0-1 from 3
We’ve taken 2 2-point baskets and made 1, fouled on 1. Each 3 is further away. WSU defense is dominating us so far.

Relax it’s early.

Defense is improving by stealing, but when we miss they get easy dunks. Their freshman guard is lights out so far, and we can’t hit a jumper. If this keeps up, it will be very competetive.

Comment by KeyboardKev 11.29.08 @ 8:17 pm

I am just happy we have a 3 point lead. WASU has a good defense and it’s the third game this week for us. We played a scary TTU team last night and conditioning will play a part in the second half.

Comment by Panthoor 11.29.08 @ 8:45 pm

Why the hell is Biggs shooting so much?????

Comment by MoE 11.29.08 @ 8:46 pm

Defense is playing great now. Dixon a perimeter beast. I agree with MoE, that’s hurting us a bunch.

Just saw the Pitt/UConn game is at noon on Saturday, ESPN.

Comment by KeyboardKev 11.29.08 @ 9:42 pm

Looked like it wasn’t the highest percentage night for us from the floor, but we gritted out a nice win against another defensively tough team. I’ll take it.

Panthers win the Tourney and there was ‘No Doubt about it”!!!! Levance is one badass point guard. This Pitt team is for real…

Comment by The Hagen 11.29.08 @ 9:53 pm

Oh and by the way…Wasn’t that the best damn football game we’ve seen at Heinz field this year??

Comment by The Hagen 11.29.08 @ 9:54 pm

This tops off a great couple of days. FT’s helped us win this game…good things happen to those that sink the freebies. Happy happy joy joy.

NOON? Really NOON!?!?!?! Again with the Noon Start. I hate NOON starts!

Comment by Tony In Harrisburg 11.29.08 @ 10:05 pm

Just got back from the hoops game. Defense was once again superb.

Off topic: I saw that Harangody from Notre Dame came down with pneumonia. As much as I hate Notre Dame and as much as Harangody looks like a homeless version of Brock Lesnar, I wish the kid well.

If you’ve never had pneumonia, imagine having a chest cold that sodomizes your immune system to the point that every time you breath your lungs sound like they are taking bong hits. I caught it as a relatively in shape 25 year old and it beat my ass so hard that even 2 or 3 months later I would get a little winded going up several flights of stairs.

On the bright side, left over cough syrup with codeine mixed with some vodka makes a nice martini.

ugh, noon starts for pitt folk are 11am starts for me, but ill be up for it, especially the way shady played on friday

Comment by Patrick 11.30.08 @ 3:20 am

Good to see Pitt take out a couple of BCS schools in the last two days. Tonight was ugly, but that’s just what we do sometimes.

And I’m pissed about the noon start. My gf is a Virginia Tech fan, and I promised her that if they made the ACC title game I’d take her, and that starts at 1 I believe.

I’m now actually hoping that the Pitt game isn’t on TV anywhere in Tampa so I won’t feel as bad since I wouldn’t have been able to see it anyways.

JCMD – You may be out of luck as far as the PITT-UCONN TV schedule, I believe it’s on ESPN nationwide.

However, you may get lucky by taking your girlfriend to her alma mater’s football game even though your’s is on TV at the same time. At least you have a great bargaining chip in your back pocket to throw on the pillow when asking for consideration to stretch the boundaries of taboo.

Perfect Karma would be Cincy beating the winner of the VT/BC game in the Orange Bowl.

Comment by KeyboardKev 11.30.08 @ 8:22 am

Where is this team going to get a “play-maker” from next year though? You have seen Option 1 – Stull and Option 2 – Bostick. Neither is a play-maker. Perhaps next year we should just do what some high school team did in California, and line up every down in special teams formation where there are like 3 guys in the backfield to take snaps and the eligible receivers are always moved around.

Comment by Joey D 11.30.08 @ 3:09 pm

Louisville is struggling big time against Western Kentucky. If they end up winning this game, we could still take their #3 spot. We had an awesome week beating Belmont, Texas Tech and Washington State. Those 3 teams look capable of winning their conferences.

Comment by Panthoor 11.30.08 @ 4:53 pm

Louisville loses. They weren’t hitting from outside and got frustrated defending WKU’s slow-down offense.

PITT #3!!!

Comment by KeyboardKev 11.30.08 @ 6:11 pm

The Cardinals = stunned! It’s going to be great hitting that #3 spot before taking on Duquesne. Also good to see the football team reenter the Top 25 in both polls.

Comment by johnny 11.30.08 @ 6:28 pm

Steelers killed the cheaters too so I am having a blast.

The City Game will be fun to watch. Also the pictures of the basketball team holding up a trophy are amazing.

Comment by Panthoor 11.30.08 @ 7:45 pm

I think Stull has enough to put Pitt into a top 10 slot next year, but he needs to iron out the dumb mistakes…seems too jumpy some times. When he has his focus and timing, he looks very solid. But I do hope they give Sunseri an honest shot next year and let the best guy win the job. Glad to see they were looking for Byham on Friday…he’s a good receiver and option down the middle.

Comment by Matt N. 11.30.08 @ 8:35 pm

I think the unsung hero from Friday was the O-line. They did great run and pass blocking.

What will it take for Pitt to get into the Gator Bowl?

Basketball looks great. I like being under the radar. We haven’t played any “big name schools” but we’ve beaten 3 tournament teams already; 2 on the road!!!

Comment by Hail2Pitt 11.30.08 @ 9:21 pm

I don’t see any way that we get to the Gator bowl. All the “experts” predict that the Gator will take a Big 12 team over a big east team. A win against UConn should get us into the Sun bowl.

Comment by TMGPanther 11.30.08 @ 9:25 pm

Pittsburgh sports = 5 and 0 this weekend. What are the odds of having the Steelers, Pens, and two different Panthers teams (in major sports) win over the course of the same weekend? SWEET!!!!!!!

The Sun Bowl has stated that they will persue a 6 loss ND team. The MCC Bowl looks like where we go if we beat UCONN.

Comment by HbgFrank 12.01.08 @ 11:58 am

If Rutgers beats Louisville on Thursday, then 6 Big East teams will have at least 7 wins. There are 6 bowl slots (BCS, Sun/Gator, Car, Toronto, Tampa, Birmingham). By the Notre Dame bowl rule, a 6-win ND team cannot bump a 7-win Big East team if the slot is needed to get the Big East team in. If Rutgers loses, then only 5 Big East teams have 7 wins for 6 bowl slots, and the Sun Bowl can and will take Notre Dame.

Comment by KeyboardKev 12.01.08 @ 12:41 pm

THIS IS ALL ASSUMMING WE WIN SATURDAY:

So if Louisville wins, we are alone in 2nd place? only 5 big east teams will have 7 wins? and 9-3 Pitt gets bumped to a shitty bowl by a team that we beat?

And if Rutgers wins, they would be in 2nd place because of the head-to-head? wouldn’t the Sun Bowl take Rutgers then?
