Thank You Time Warner Cable

Recently TWC took over from Comcast as our cable provider in the area. This was fantastic news. Not because one monopoly cable provider is better than the other in the area as far as selection, prices and such. It has to do with the whole “On Demand” shows. Not the movies you pay for, but the free programming. Comcast had a surprisingly large selection of kids stuff. TWC apparently does not. It has saved us a decent amount of coin in renting or buying DVDs for the kid.

So why am I happy? Because it was the final straw for the wife, and we will be switching to DirecTV. She had been resisting the move despite the chance to get more of the channels she liked (history, documentaries, biographies and stuff), and getting the DVR. All because of the stupid On Demand. The difference in the price between cable and satellite for the packages we have are maybe $1. This includes getting the sports package which includes ESPNU, FSN-Pittsburgh, the YES network and a slew of other regional sports channels.

I will now not only be able to catch a lot more games on TV, but be able to easily record them and rewatch them on the DVR (which I’m hoping she won’t realize I will be doing until it’s too late). Including the games I go to.

Happy, happy. Joy, joy.

you’ll love it, direct tv is the best, in theory you can watch sports 24 x 7, best of luck to you and the wife

Ever worry the wife might read your posts?

I hope you port some of the Pitt highlights you’re bound to record onto Youtube.

You know, the wife rarely, if ever, looks on this site, because it is about Pitt. She doesn’t care, and just hopes I get it out of my system here.

Evil. Genius.

My wife was shocked back in the ’80s when I invited guys over to watch a PITT-PSU game, and when one guy started rooting for Penn State I kicked him out of my house. I did give him a chance to stay if he wouldn’t verbalize his feelings but he must have thought I was kidding – right up until the door closed behind him. To this day my wife can’t believe I did that (but, she’s from the Big Island of Hawaii so what does she know?)

Needless to say she allows me my PITT fandom without interference.

Does satellite provide a better picture than digital cable? And living in Central PA, where the NITS are rammed down my throat at every possible angle, can I still get Fox-PGH on Dish?
Thanks.

Don’t know if the satellite picture is better than digital cable, but we’ve had DISH for 6+ years and it’s great. And yes, you DO get Fox-PGH on it. My condolences to you that you have to put up with that Nittany Sh–tany stuff all the time. At least we in the ‘burgh only have to suffer through it SOME of the time.

Last year all of the Pens games were blacked out on FSP on the DirecTV. Most of the Pitt basketball games were shown, but if I remember right, one or two were blacked out as well. None of the Pirates games were blacked out for those of you that care.

DirecTV has always been a boon for me. I’ve been living all over the US for the past 10 years, and so long as my account is “billed” to a Pittsburgh address, I could get local Pittsburgh channels and FSN Pgh as my home sports channel (no sports package required). This is key because Pens and Bucs games don’t get blacked out if that is your home market. Since you can pay your bill online, it doesn’t matter if you actually receive it or not.

The one drawback is that if you have REALLY bad weather approaching, you can lose your signal. The good thing is that you KNOW the problem, and you can watch over your DSL ‘Net connection to see if the weather will clear soon. This is only in extreme conditions – average rainfall won’t knock you out if you’re properly pointed at the satellite. Personally, I’d rather have this problem than lose my cable occasionally and not have any idea when it will return.

The Sunday Ticket package is too expensive now, though. I had it every year – used to be you could get it for $99. Now it’s almost three times that. As much as I loved it, that’s just too much for me to stomach.
