The Steady Drumbeat of a Blowout

The points didn’t come in one wild quarter or half. There wasn’t a defense that completely overwhelmed and demoralized Duke. Instead, they were steady consistent blows on both sides of the ball. It didn’t even feel like a blowout until you looked up at the score in 4th quarter.

Duke never quite seemed out of it in the first half. In part, because, Pitt fans have been conditioned this year to understand that no lead is truly safe. But primarily because while Pitt was dominating, they weren’t destroying.

A lead of 28-14 at the half was nice. The defense was decent, but still showed its weaknesses. That Duke missed a short field goal at the end of the half seemed like a bit of luck.

The offense was solid, with the running game leading the way. Still, there were worries as Peterman threw a horrid pick six, and the passing game in general looked sluggish. Dropped balls and bad throws bailed out by a running game. Even that had worries with James Conner leaving for nearly a quarter because of his ankle.

Then the second half came, and Pitt continued to pound. Beating Duke in all facets. Consistently executing. The offense and defense both playing cleanly. Not making mistakes. Disciplined. Very disciplined.

Putting Duke into submission as the steady drives continued on offense, while the defense kept Duke from advancing to even field goal range. Another 14 point quarter, and it was 42-14 when that damnable song was played.

Still, Pitt kept doing everything well. Even as the starters were slowly being taken out for the back-ups. By then, Duke wasn’t even desperate. They were beaten. The cumulative effect of the first three quarters breaking them in the fourth.

About as solid a victory as Pitt has had. A quiet blowout that exuded a confidence from Pitt that hasn’t been seen in a while. Not cocky. Not arrogant. Strength and confidence in themselves and their coaches.

This is what happens when your defense is good enough to hold the opposition to 7 points. Pressure on the QB all day and more dropped passes than we have seen all year.

The return of Henderson also helped. He had been pretty much shutdown for the last three games. Should have insured his ALL-America after Saturday.

Only memorable Pitt mistakes were the INT for TD, and the drops by Hall and Ford on one drive.

James Conner with two career ACC records.

The only letdown was crowd size.

Could have been worse, PSU-Rutgers looked like an empty stadium. I guess we are more important to PSU than Rutgers.

Really enjoyed seeing our first team offense, especially Peterman, watching the game from the sidelines. It’s been way too long. Let’s do the same thing to Syracuse. Wish we could play NC and Miami right now.

Comment by rayhpgh 11.21.16 @ 9:29 am

So if tOSU beats Michigan, PSU plays for the title vs Wisconsin or Nebraska?

Michigan St is 1-7 in conference this year.

Comment by gc 11.21.16 @ 9:37 am

Good thing for them there is no strength of schedule issue. They played three tough teams all year, and squeaked out one victory vs. tOSU. Very Paternoesque.

Comment by gc 11.21.16 @ 9:40 am

Eight patsies on the schedule this year, hilarious.

Comment by gc 11.21.16 @ 9:41 am

By the same token, Pitt only had two patsies all year. Possibly Syracuse makes three if Dungy can’t play.

Comment by gc 11.21.16 @ 9:43 am

Very consistent effort against Duke and definitely no Clemson hangover. This team plays really hard. It’s so refreshing and enjoyable to watch. Of course, we have our deficiencies but they give great effort and really seem to play hard for one another.

I know our D is designed to stop the run but man, that doesn’t make it any less impressive. Absent a some sloppy play against Miami, we’ve shut down our opponents run game, week-in-and-week-out. Duke had really good success against GT, VT and UNC running the ball leading up to our game…and got nothing against Pitt. They couldn’t stretch the field well vertically and that aided our D. Solid effort.

Offense is really clicking on all cylinders. I think Peterman has had an excellent season and he does so many little things well. Nice touch on the ball, good play-action, tough, can run when needed. He’s been very steady.

I wish I could fly in for the Syracuse game. We all know we lost 3 really close games that could have went our way but these guys fight. Wish I could be there for the last game of the year to show my appreciation. h2p

I feel Conner should at least be invited to NYC for the Heisman show, even if he doesn’t end up with it

Comment by DocJLK 11.21.16 @ 9:56 am

I’m looking for a Pitt Nebraska Pinstripe Bowl

Comment by steve1 11.21.16 @ 9:58 am

We got Clemson and Syracuse for our cross-overs, PSU got Minn, Iowa, and Purdue, three teams without a good win among them. Avoiding Wisky and Nebraska.

This is why I said it was dumb to schedule OKST, wins are the only thing that matters, strength of schedule is irrelevant. One less loss, and we would have been ranked, with our two big wins.

Playing one of PSU, WV and ND each year is enough and they will be in front of a packed stadium. Even the Marshall game was dumb since we have to go there next year.

Comment by gc 11.21.16 @ 10:00 am

Tough to make people happy. Most complain about MAC or FCS appearances on the home schedule. Now complaining about Big 12 home and away games.

I’d prefer that Pitt play a solid schedule rather than playing record padding games. I say that as a fan and season ticket holder.

Win games against solid opponents and the ranking takes care of itself. If Pitt plays even decent pass D (say 75-100) this year they’re probably a one loss team (Miami). That would indeed be very impressive with their schedule. It would probably place them in the Top 10 and some consideration for the championship.

Comment by Barvo 11.21.16 @ 10:42 am

DocJLK – Bruce Feldman and DiPaolo had this exchange on the topic of Conner getting an invite to NYC … doesn’t sound likely. We want to keep Conner off the banquet circuit. He needs to be in shape for the bowl game and combine 🙂

Jerry DiPaola ?@JDiPaola_Trib 16h16 hours ago
@BruceFeldmanCFB Is Conner a candidate for a trip to NYC?

Bruce Feldman ?@BruceFeldmanCFB 15h15 hours ago
@JDiPaola_Trib My guess is he’s probably a big longshot to get invited to NYC for the presentation.

Oh the possibilities if Pitt has opened up the passing game earlier in the season. Still a great year especially after we juice the Orange

Comment by xkegroller 11.21.16 @ 10:52 am

Scheduling Oklahoma State was in part a reaction to criticism Pitt has received by playing Mid-American Conference teams. I don’t fault them one bit for upgrading the schedule. When I first saw this year’s schedule, I felt that they would be hard pressed to equal last year’s won-loss record. After the fact, if the Panthers would have hung on to win the North Carolina game, this would have been a very different season. Three tough losses to North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Oklahoma State and one unexpected upset win at Clemson. All in all, if Pitt beats Syracuse in their final home game they have 8 wins with a brutal schedule. Considering everything, I’ll take it.

Comment by Justinian 11.21.16 @ 11:02 am

xkegroller, Good point about the passing game. It could have been two things, they didn’t have the confidence in their passing game early in the year or the Pitt passing game developed over the course of the season. It’s probably both. If they could have thrown the ball instead of running into a packed in defense with 8 men in the box, Pitt gets the 1st downs to close out the North Carolina game.

Comment by Justinian 11.21.16 @ 11:09 am

@Justinian
In UNC game if Pitt ran the ball the last 3rd down try then the clock probably runs out before UNC has a chance to win. Part of learning experience for the coaches too. (Give UNC some credit too – they made the correct calls on 4th down and executed them…game is not played in a vacuum.)

Tough loss (VT loss hurt more emotionally imo) but not one to ruin the season in retrospect imo. I’ll take the yuge upset @ Clemson (a game for the ages) and the win against PSU in compensation at this stage of the rebuild process. Win against ‘Cuse and HCPN is waaaayyyy ahead of the curve for a newbie second year head coach. H2P

Comment by Tommymac 11.21.16 @ 1:03 pm

You schedule the best you can. This year’s schedule should be the norm for every P5 school. Sometimes it hurts you, sometimes it saves you.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 11.21.16 @ 1:31 pm

The schedule is setup nicely for us to finish on the upbeat this year.

Both Duke and Syracuse have lesser athletes than us and are probably two of the ACC teams with even less depth than Pitt. (along with BC and UVA)

As injuries are taking their toll on just about everyone at this stage of the season.

Imo, this is one of the reasons Miami pretty much owns us. They have far superior depth and we generally play them towards the end of the season, when depth matters.

Yea we beat them in the last game of the year in 2014, but there were very odd circumstances revolving around that game. (to say the least)

Comment by Emel 11.21.16 @ 1:49 pm

As far as the ‘opening up of the Pitt passing game’.

Let’s not fool ourselves here, Pitt’s receivers could get open against Duke’s secondary, even Dontez Ford.

Not so much against better teams with much better secondaries. And much better athletes.

Comment by Emel 11.21.16 @ 1:53 pm

I think Canada is smart enough to know, when Pitt can pass and when it can’t.

They should be able to sling it around against middling Syracuse as well.

Comment by Emel 11.21.16 @ 1:55 pm

UNC lined up with 5 in the backfield on that last play and the refs missed it…

Comment by BigB 11.21.16 @ 3:47 pm

Cuse is young on the defensive side – Pitt’s Canadian offense should color within the lines with (the) Orange on Saturday.

Comment by Erie Express 11.21.16 @ 4:52 pm

Pitt will beat Syracuse, the Panthers are at home and in the elements and on the slippery grass with the swirling wind.

SU will pack it in early, the Panthers have something to play for and the defense will perform like they did in the Duke game.

Pitt 35

Cuse 16

Comment by WLAT 910 radio and the big beat! 11.21.16 @ 5:26 pm

Erie – “Color within the lines”! Nice play! Orange you glad you came up with that??!

Since you’ve beaten me to the punch (orange sherbert) again, I can only hope to get the juices flowing by Friday. The pressure you keep me under is almost unbearable. Glad this season is about to end. Go Pitt – Pluck the orange.

Comment by Savannah Panther 11.21.16 @ 7:07 pm

Savannah – why do the Syracuse Orangemen have orange jerseys?

So they can play the game, direct traffic and pick up trash without changing their cloths.

Crush the cuse!

Comment by Erie Express 11.21.16 @ 7:47 pm

From ESPN –

Pitt has 7 non-offensive TDs this year. Only Alabama has more by a Power 5 team.

Comment by Erie Express 11.21.16 @ 7:56 pm

Some pre season statistics/Projections.Pitt plays the 31st toughest schedule this year 27th last year. In Phil Steele’s annual Pitt was given a power ranking of 112.22 about the same as PS and the only team in the ACC they lost to with a lower rank was NC. Steele also projected Pitt to an 8/5 regular season a final rank of 35 (PS 33) and a trip to the Independence Bowl to play Mississippi State. The 8/5 is looking pretty solid lets see how the rest plays out. I sure hope Narduzzie has some good linemen and linebackers ready to go next year. It looks like a total of 7 and 7 Offense/ Defense need to be replaced in the regular rotation.Lets see the gold lights on the Cathedral again this week, H2p

Comment by Pitt60 11.21.16 @ 9:15 pm

Shows how innaccurate preseason projections are. Notre Dame tanked in the top ten. Pitt’s schedule much more difficult this year than last.

Comment by gc 11.21.16 @ 9:40 pm

What other team has beaten three top ten ranked teams? I’m guessing none. All that matters to pollsters is W-L and conference; not that 4 losses should be top 25.
Was anybody but me impressed by Jay Stocker, second on team with 5 tackles. Each year draws raves in camp then bench.

Comment by rkb 11.21.16 @ 9:50 pm

oops lost to OkSt by TD

Comment by rkb 11.21.16 @ 9:52 pm

There are 7 8-3 teams in the top 25. If we had played a rent-a-win instead of OKST, we would be ranked. The ACC schedule and one Power 5 team gets us there. There are no style points.

Comment by gc 11.21.16 @ 9:58 pm

PennState played #2, and 3. We were their next toughest opponent, unranked but equivalent to #30 in the AP.

We played # 4, 8, 11, 27, 29, and Miami.

Top to bottom a much more difficult schedule.

They are ranked we are not.

Only one team with 4 losses in the top 25, LSU.

Comment by gc 11.21.16 @ 10:09 pm

Jay Stocker looked good, will be a starter next year.

Comment by gc 11.21.16 @ 10:10 pm

We are screwed again next year with OKST and PSU, giving our new QB no time to acclimate.

This year we had no passing game till our fifth game, with our new coordinator. Next year we won’t have Conner the TouchDown King, and a new QB, hopefully not a new coordinator. We would have beaten UNC with any fourth quarter offense. Who knows what might have happened if we had another tune-up instead of OKST on the road.

The rent-a wins serves two purposes, warm-ups and victories.

We can schedule better opponents when we are worthy.

Comment by gc 11.21.16 @ 10:19 pm

Next year’s start Youngstown State, PSU, OKST, ACC TBD, Rice. Going to be tough on a freshman QB, without Bisno, Johnson, Orndoff, and Conner.

Not to mention a totally rebuilt defense.

Comment by gc 11.21.16 @ 10:28 pm

gc – first, let’s not get ahead of ourselves and lose focus on the next game. Cuse can beat us even though Vegas says otherwise.

The team will be better next year, with the biggest question mark being QB. There could be a grad transfer that steps in (Max Browne from USC) or one of our guys may be ready.

The Oline will have Jones-Smith replace Bisno, Dintino for Johnson, Clark for Orndoff and NO ONE replaces Conner, but we will have five very good RB’s in Aston, QO, Moss, Hall and Sibley. Don’t forget K.Pugh and J.Whitehead –

On D, the landscape starts to take shape for the future. Our obvious weak spot this year was the D, littered with SR’s. Price will be replaced by Hendrix (is he still in school?), Soto and Jarrett will be replaced by Watts and Taleni. The LBers spots are where we will see improvements with Brightwell and Wirginis replacing Caprara and Galambos. And then there is Webb and Lewis replaced by P.Ford/L.Wade? and Hamlin.

Let’s not forget we will be replacing our kicker with three know possibilities, all unproven in P5 CFB, and the long snapper.

Back to focusing on cuse. If Pitt is truely a 24.5 point favorite, we should see plenty of the cast I mentioned above making plays on Saturday.

HTP!

Better days are ahead for Pitt FB…

Comment by Erie Express 11.22.16 @ 5:14 am

Based on Pitt’s pass defense this year I’d take Syracuse and the 24 points. The odds makers have got to be factoring in that Syracuse QB Dungey will not be playing in this game. Never the less I’d still take the points as I think Syracuse will come in fired up just because of that point spread.

Comment by jrnpitt 11.22.16 @ 5:33 am

@jrnpitt, with you on taking the points but last week I was thinking the same. Outside of the betting, I would like to see Dungey challenge this Pitt defense. and hopefully the younger players get good minutes.

Honor Conner!!!

Comment by TVax1 11.22.16 @ 6:38 am

I believe it would be more appropriate to “Honor Conner” at a special ceremony at the Pete. Proceeds from the gate could be donated to cancer research and treatment funds. Saturday should honor the Seniors. They have overcome much adversity to establish a football program heading in the right direction and have become excellent role models.
