Jamie Dixon Heads To TCU

Well, now basketball gets on the coaching carousel.

I am saddened. I know plenty of you are celebrating. Fine.

It probably was the smart move for Jamie Dixon and Pitt. This wasn’t a case where the AD wanted him gone like Jeff Long to Walt Harris. At the same time, the school was not exactly stopping him.

The stuff I referenced earlier today about Buzz Williams has been turning over in my mind. I have to believe Dixon spoke with Ben Howland and was reminded of how that ended.

I liked Jamie Dixon as a coach and as a representative of the University of Pittsburgh. I don’t think things were as gone as some suggest.

I’m not pretending things were great, but some of the revisionism and denigration of Dixon to rationalize why he should go was beyond stupid.

The facts are, he consistently took Pitt to the heights the school hadn’t reached. The NCAA has had a 64 team tournament since 1985. Pitt made the NCAA Tournament only 7 times before 1985. They made it 8 times from 1985-2003. 11 of 13 years had Pitt in the NCAA Tournament. That’s an impressive run at just about any program.

Pitt achieve #1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament twice. Reached the No. 1 ranking in national polls for the first time. All things that never happened to Pitt before.

I hope Jamie Dixon builds something strong at TCU. I hope he does well there. I want to see him beating the Hoopies once more.

You guys are kids trying to guess what you are going to get for Christmas. And you are make believing what will be under the tree.

It’s a shame. Chas is right. We lost a good one. Dixon is an elite coach. Unless we replace him with another elite coach like Shane Miller PITT looses big.

I don’t care what potential a young buck may have, you don’t replace a legend.

I sure hope this blog, as meaningless as it is, didn’t have anything to do with Dixon leaving. A lot of stupid remarks were made here by people that have no idea what they speak.

I’m in mourning.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 03.21.16 @ 8:27 pm

UPitt – I hope you are right.

Sean Miller would be a big time hire. Recruiting should improve immediately.

HTP!

Comment by Erie Express 03.21.16 @ 8:28 pm

Pitt’s gonna make Sean an offer.

He can’t refuse.

Comment by Emel 03.21.16 @ 8:29 pm

Upittbaseball, please don’t jinks this Sean Miller thing. Because every time you say something it turns out the opposite.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 03.21.16 @ 8:30 pm

U of A doesn’t have near the money Pitt has.

He’s coming, from what I hear. Unless something changes.

Comment by Emel 03.21.16 @ 8:32 pm

Guys, this blog is becoming too much make believe.

Upittbaseball no more comments by you

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 03.21.16 @ 8:32 pm

I’m inclined to agree with Jeff Goodman. I can’t see Sean Miller coming here. Pitt is a step down from Arizona. Not a huge step down, but a step down nonetheless.

Then again, if familial considerations are indeed a major factor for him, then Pitt might have better than a remote shot at obtaining his services.

Comment by Swinging Gate 03.21.16 @ 8:34 pm

I’m inclined to agree with Old Pitt Grad on a lot.

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 03.21.16 @ 8:36 pm

OPG….a .500 coach (no, I don’t count his rent-a-wins) is not elite. Mike Krzyzewski is an elite coach. A coach who never made a Final Four in 13 years and/or never won a NC is not an elite coach.

Comment by Jackagain 03.21.16 @ 8:38 pm

Ollie played at UConn and Calhoun set him up for years to come. He ain’t leaving.

Marshall re-upped a month ago and he ain’t going anywhere.

Either Miller works but maybe too many hurdles to overcome. I think Barnes is using the netjet hours big time.

Jamies last play call should tell you enough about him as a leader. He recommended Brandon Knight. What??

Comment by dhuffdaddy 03.21.16 @ 8:42 pm

Well said, Chas.

I’m sad to see Dixon go. I really am. I was at Pitt from 2001 to 2005. Pitt hoops are a huge part of my college experience and Jamie Dixon was at center stage.

With that said, IMO this is best for both parties. It was time. Amicable parting. It was time.

A huge thank you to Jamie Dixon for not only being the best coach in program history…but more importantly for being a great representative of our University.

I have a ton of confidence in Barnes, and our admin as a whole. Pitt will be fine.

Comment by JAM05Pitt 03.21.16 @ 8:44 pm

I’m with you Chas, sad day for Pitt basketball.

I think many of you are thinking this moves makes us relevant again, but this senior group won’t be happy about learning a new system. Guys are going to transfer out, recruits will get out of their scholarships. Today the program took a few steps back, we didn’t move forward.

Unless Barnes and co. can bring in a top tier coach, who can convince guys to stay and knows the area, and can recruit we haven’t gotten better.

I agree the last 5 years were tough to watch but I liked our chances next year. The next few months could be rough.

Comment by Pitt fan from Canada 03.21.16 @ 8:45 pm

Swinging gate, And the TCU job isn’t a step down from coaching at Pitt. Who knows what someone will do when offered the opportunity to return home and coach where you went to school. Pitt although not quite the stature of Arizona is still a well known program. It’s in the east and in the ACC, the very best basketball conference in the nation.

Comment by Justinian 03.21.16 @ 8:49 pm

Spend the money and get Miller here!

Comment by Deepelemblues 03.21.16 @ 8:53 pm

OPG – nice to say nice things about Dixon but calling him a legend is like saying Primantis is Fine Dining.

Comment by Upittbaseball 03.21.16 @ 8:54 pm

OPG – I think Dixon saw my posts and said you know what it is time and moved his family to Texas and in the town I reside. LOL. You hopefully are joking. He struck a deal because it served he and his family right and bc Barnes was going to start pushing him for wins and taking some of the control back.

Dixon reading posts and leaving because of it. Haha

Too bad he didn’t leave before the Badger game. (jk)

Emel – With Penny!! There was one of him and family at TCU today. This was planned for weeks.

Comment by Upittbaseball 03.21.16 @ 9:12 pm

upittbaseball, nothing is serious on this site or real either.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 03.21.16 @ 9:13 pm

I think the haters forget this…

Winning Percentage: 73% under Dixon, 56% before Dixon.
Big East Titles: 4 in 22 years before Dixon, 2 in 13 years under him.
Tournament Appearances: 23% before Dixon, 85% with Dixon.
Sweet Sixteens: Four prior to Dixon (in 50+ seasons), three
with Dixon in 13 seasons.
Elite 8s: 2 in 65 seasons before, 1 with Dixon during 13 seasons.

Sean and Archie are not coming to Pitt, but the next coach that does has a lot to prove.

Comment by Pitt fan from Canada 03.21.16 @ 9:14 pm

On Wildcats Sports Nation blog there has been no article or mention of the possibility of Miller to Pitt. Not saying things can’t heat up, but they haven’t even mentioned it on their side yet, let alone feel it’s possible…

Sean and Scott are just negotiating the game shirt allowance. They will be calling Upittbaseball to up his yearly donation to cover this unexpected large expense.

Oh yeah a case per year of antiperspirant to sweeten the deal

Comment by DionJag 03.21.16 @ 9:24 pm

If TCU is excited, then I’m happy. Congratulations to AD Barnes for having the guts and the smarts to get Dixon ouuta here with no financial drag on the university.

The last remnant of worthless Steve Pederson and Nordenberg has been released. Dixon managed to turn fans on=and turn them off. Now let’s get a coach who lets talented freshmen play.

Apparently/fan comments on social media do count.

Comment by Tony77019 03.21.16 @ 9:27 pm

Scratch Brad Underwood of SF Austin off the list, Okie State just hired him.

We’re going to get a Miller anyway, so no big deal.

Comment by Emel 03.21.16 @ 9:28 pm

Pitt fan from Canada…

Before Dixon we played at the Fitzgerald Field House which held 4K people.

link to pittsburghpanthers.com

The HC made about 300K a year.

Dixon had the Pete to lure players and made recently 3.2 million and was always in 1 of the 2 best BB conferences in the country and still couldn’t recruit. Most of these other Pitt teams you cite were independents.

He’s gone because he hit a ceiling and has been mediocre for 5 years.

Comment by Jackagain 03.21.16 @ 9:30 pm

Jack and POD – great points and posts.

I hated the that Jamie got complacent after his 56 year contract and his passion was gone. He forgot what got him there and just thought the results would follow and that isn’t the case. You always have to work for anything worth having.

Comment by Upittbaseball 03.21.16 @ 9:37 pm

Pitt got better recruits in that rickety old Field House when Paul Evans was HC from end of Chipman era.

Of course Seth Greenburg and John Calipari were assts then.

Curtis Aiken
Charles Smith
Jerome Lane
Demetrious Gore
Sean Miller
Rod Brooken (Rip)
Brian Shorter
Bobby Martin
Jason Matthews

Should have been a piece of cake to recruit to the NBA like Peterson Events Center.

Comment by Emel 03.21.16 @ 9:43 pm

I get it… a lot of you think we got better today but agree to disagree. Time will tell, let’s see who we get to coach and who transfers out.

Bottom line… change is coming. I hope it’s positive.

While some of you have been filling this bkog with what I hope are your final bashings of Dixon the college landscape is about to be changed some more as the SEC has hired the former BE commissioner Mike T to work his magic on them. AS much as some of you like to dwell on the negative a coach matching what JD did is no guarantee.

Comment by Joe Bro 03.21.16 @ 10:10 pm

All eras come to an end. The Dixon era was pretty strong. The best sustained winning period in Pitt history, but it was time for a change. Jamie’s recruiting had deteriorated to the point where we still don’t have a center or point guard for next year. The cupboard is not completely bare but the new guy will have to improvise.

So hopefully we get a guy that is creative and will make the best of what we have and hit the ground running with recruits next year.

We still should make the tournament next year with the guys coming back, so no new guy excuses.

Comment by gc 03.21.16 @ 10:15 pm

Sean Miller has the sixth highest salary in the NCAA. Why would he leave Arizona to come to Pitt? Not sure I follow some people’s logic. What am I missing here?

Comment by MariettaMike 03.21.16 @ 10:17 pm

Joe, actually we feel that those who wanted Dixon to stay are dwelling on the negative and we are being positive wanting change.

Comment by Jackagain 03.21.16 @ 10:22 pm

The right guy will be able to energize the seniors for one more campaign. I think Johnson, Luther and Wilson should be pretty excited. Not sure what Nix will be thinking because Lett is probably gone, but a new cast of enthusiastic coaches has to be a good thing, because my guess is the old group was getting a little stale.

Will any of the players leave, time will tell, hopefully they stick around long enough to give the new guy a chance.

Comment by gc 03.21.16 @ 10:23 pm

Jack, actually many of us feel that those who wanted Dixon gone were dwelling on the negative and we are disappointed that he is gone.

Perspective goes both ways.

Comment by Pitt fan from Canada 03.21.16 @ 10:26 pm

I am hoping for a young energetic guy, and I agree that Miller is not the guy. If he can’t make the final four at Arizona, doubtful that he could make it here. We need a young charismatic guy that can recruit the east coast.

Comment by gc 03.21.16 @ 10:27 pm

Marietta – He and his wife from Western PA. Aging Parents. Money will be matched. Lots of kids and they can see the Grandparents. Alma Matter.

He already is pretty loaded money wise. This won’t be about money.

Comment by Upittbaseball 03.21.16 @ 10:27 pm

I get it that Dixon reached a ceiling that few can push through and he hasn’t the past 3-5 years. For those of you who keep saying he can’t coach or recruit, how did he reach the tourny 11 of 13 years? If he can’t recruit he must be a great coach to reach so often. If he can’t coach then those great recruits must have done it on their own. I think the change is probably best at this point but I’m very doubtful someone is just going to walk in here and surpass Dixon.

Comment by AnotherClancyRebound 03.21.16 @ 10:30 pm

I am not as concerned about losing the two Central guys because Narduzzi is recruiting nationally.

We need the same approach with BBall. Great to get the local kids, when a Billy Knight or DeJuan Blair comes around, but we need guys from all over. Florida comes to mind.

Comment by gc 03.21.16 @ 10:35 pm

Seth Greenberg and Orlando Antigua are not splash hires. I don’t think people have been negative towards Dixon. I do think that those calling him elite are a little off.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 03.21.16 @ 10:37 pm

I think Dixon did a remarkable job with the kids he had, but his recruiting has been going downhill. The ACC is a whole new ballgame. It has been nine years since we made the sweet sixteen.
The trend was not good, and I think if Jamie thought he could turn it around he would have stayed.

Comment by gc 03.21.16 @ 10:39 pm

Upitt… It’s always about money, always. I agree about being close to family, etc., but aging parents can move to Arizona out of snow belt. It would be nice to get Sean to coach Pitt, I just don’t see the value add for him. Perhaps his brother Archie might consider moving to the ‘Burgh but I don’t see Sean coming. PAC-12 every bit prestigious as ACC. Besides there are a number of other coaches that would consider Pitt a big promotion. This is interesting conversation though.

Comment by MariettaMike 03.21.16 @ 10:40 pm

Luke Walton – Bam. Haha

Comment by Upittbaseball 03.21.16 @ 10:41 pm

This was the single most important move required to give Pitt the opportunity to be relevant again

Comment by Old School Panther 03.21.16 @ 10:41 pm

Emel — I miss that list of guys badly. Good point on recruiting.

OPG — Dixon was a fantastic regular season coach and good dude…but major brainfarting in the big dance year after year finally caught up to him.

UPitt — Louie C. baby!!! Bring the chevron sweater and continually confused look…and Chris Mullin and Walter Berry while you’re at it.

I liked everything about Jamie except his complete lack of concern for guards who can shoot…he had a few now and again, but mostly preferred brick-tossing defenders. And who could recruit short, non-jumping, non-shooting point guards who dominated the ball and started all four years better than JD?

He was a good coach and good guy but the guard thing wore me out after Krauser, Fields, Robinson…

Comment by Matt N. 03.21.16 @ 10:41 pm

Mike – I agree on the money but Pitt can match that. They won’t leave Chippewa area. Archie is close and they have his kids as well. I just feel this lines up and Barnes isn’t stupid. He wouldn’t say big splash if he didn’t already have a verbal from a top target.

Comment by Upittbaseball 03.21.16 @ 10:43 pm

It all worked out and was luck and Dixon leaving but Barnes pressure had to help. Barnes is either a genius or quite lucky. He got rid of the 7 year deal and got probably 50% of the buyout.

Comment by Upittbaseball 03.21.16 @ 10:45 pm

I also think that if Jamie did not get lucky with DeJuan Blair being much better than anyone knew, he would have been gone a few years ago.

I also think if Birch would have been the real deal and Adams stayed for two years, Jamie would have made that Final Four.

Great players make great coaches, not the other way around.

Comment by gc 03.21.16 @ 10:45 pm

…just thinking of that Dixon guy from a handful of years ago — great attitude, great hustle, great defense, shooting percentage slightly higher than my octogenarian mother’s.

Comment by Matt N. 03.21.16 @ 10:49 pm

How about Yale or Stephen F. Austin’s coaches?! Damn, talk about making chicken salad out of whatever’s lying around.

Comment by Matt N. 03.21.16 @ 10:53 pm

Matt – SFA’s coach just took OK ST job I think.

Comment by Upittbaseball 03.21.16 @ 10:57 pm

Wow. Too busy at work today to even take a second to see what was going on with Jamie. Home now and trying to take it all in….

Wow.
Bitter sweet.

But couldn’t be more excited for a fresh start! Plus I’ll love reading the many, many posts and comments leading up to the hire and next season!!! Reminds me of the good ole days of football coaching searches/debacles and the great Blather commentary!!!

UPitt — they ain’t fools and I’m sure they hit him with the full-court press. Too bad but there are surely a handful of very good, under-the-radar guys out there at smaller programs…Rick Pitino started at Boston University, but then again…

Comment by Matt N. 03.21.16 @ 11:14 pm

Well, it is now time for Scott Barnes to prove that he is earning his salary.

Comment by Dr. Tom 03.22.16 @ 6:16 am

Great to have a fresh start. Good luck and thanks Jamie. Read somewhere that Jamie didn’t feel appreciated. I get it but he earned that lack of appreciation with the last 4-5 years. Throw in better money, Texas tax advantages, low bar for at east 3 years and this is an easy decision for him. Still think Barnes was as supportive privately with Jamie as he sounded in the press? I don’t. Monumental hire mentioned. Not sure who qualifies. I like the idea of younger guys with energy to recruit. Someone mentioned Bobby Hurley at Buffalo And what about Chris Collins at Northwestern. ACC pedigrees don’t get any better than these Dukies. Pitt job gets them back to the ACC with a good program while they wait for Coack K to leave. Hurley has access to NYC area and NC credibility. One thing I want in a coach: Create an environment where the kids can have fun and show it. I am tired of kids moping on the court even when things are going great. Not sure I’ve seen a smile from a player in 3 years. To me, that reflects a tight coach who has kids playing tight. Change is good for everybody. Opportunities abound.
