Pitt May Have Broken The Bank

Taking a moment from pissing on the angst of Pitt fans that there is no Pitt men’s basketball head coach in place. That present Rhode Island Coach Dan Hurley may not want Pitt.

To bring you this.

Rhode Island head basketball coach Dan Hurley has received a contract offer from Pitt with an annual salary north of $3 million, multiple sources have informed FanRag Sports. Hurley is currently weighing whether or not to stay with the Rams or accept an offer from either Connecticut or Pitt, the latter of which would serve as the more lucrative option.

Sources have also indicated to FanRag Sports that Hurley is likely to make a decision on his future at some point in the next 24 hours.

Hoo-boy.

Given the tight-lipped nature of Pitt, it is easy to surmise that Hurley’s agent leaked the numbers. Perhaps to see what UConn can do to raise their offer. Or to extract even more from URI for the program overall.

Pitt probably isn’t thrilled with it leaking. Especially if Hurley doesn’t come to Pitt. It means whoever else they offer already knows how high Pitt was willing to go.

That said it does do something good for Pitt.

It does show that Pitt is not going to give up without a fight for their first choice. Couple that with the buyout for Kevin Stallings — that they will eventually have to pay. Pitt is not messing around with trying to fix basketball. Not to mention refill the Pete.

As a fan, it helps to know the program is legitimately trying to get it right.

HTP… time to put up or shut up. Pitt just put up the $$$.

I’m hoping U Conn ups the ante and Pitt loses out on Hurley.

Look at the negative effect. I agree, Pitt is probably pissed that this info was leaked. If Hurley decides to stay at RI or even take the UConn gig for less money, what does it say about Pitt. The job is that bad that we can’t even get an average coach by offering big money. Then who would come here?
I’m sure sitting coaches know JD was making 3.2 mil and KS was around 2.6 mil.
This release has the potential to really make us look bad. Don’t you think other perspective hires will wonder why Hurley turned down the job when good money was offered. Ultimately, coaching profession is about making more money….. This rebuilding job is bigger than anyone can imagine and it is scaring good coaches away.

3 mil was the minimum 2 years ago
Part of the angst of hiring Stallings was that Pitt AD went
cheap and cost more with the buy out
so if you aren’t in the 4 mil for 4 yr range
your to low in my book.

Salary is different from total compensation. A base salary of $3 million puts Hurley in the top-15. What he pulls in from bonuses, stipends, shoe-related contract, etc. That adds to the total compensation package.

Pitt should get a refund from the
last “coach search group.” for finding such a lame A.. coach.

I don’t think he brings the same gravitas that Thad Matta would bring. I wish it was he who was given an offer first. Pitt would be more attractive geography-wise to him than UGA.

Call me when it’s over!

Comment by Dan 72 03.20.18 @ 4:55 pm

I don’t care what the perception is if Hurley doesn’t accept Pitt’s offer. I just want us to hire a good coach who can do the job. They apparently really like Hurley. Georgia offered Thad Matta first and when he turned them down they offered Tom Crean the job. They didn’t hesitate. Pitt ade a big play and if need be, they can make another.

Comment by Justinian 03.20.18 @ 5:25 pm

@ROC2: Everyone knows why a coach might turn down this job. There’s no suspense. It’s a risk – a potential career buster. Come here, suck for 4-5 years, and you’re no further ahead than if you stayed where you were for another year or two and took the next safe offer. That’s the deal. Take it or leave it.

I keep saying this: whoever takes this job has to have balls of steel. We don’t want anyone who expects a quick turn around. The Nate Oats’ of the world will be around long after this is done. If Hurley walks, I understand that. The next guy might not get a $3M offer.

At least Pitt isn’t starting it’s shopping at 5-Below. They’re in the Apple Store and they’re eyeing up the merchandise with one hand on the wallet.

Good point about total compensation, Chas. Was not considering that. UCONN is potentially more competitive money wise when factoring that in.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 03.20.18 @ 6:14 pm

More comments are here now than the games at the end of the season. That shows me we made the right choice to cut ties with Stallings no matter the cost. As most have said, I just want Pitt to get it right this time. I was pro Jamie and really disliked the Stallings hire. All I knew of the guy prior to his time at Pitt was how he threatened to kill one of his players and that he had issues with Jeter at Vandy. This season, I didn’t care as much about his Louisville comments as I did his attempted breaking of the clipboard. That’s just plain embarrassing.

Mostly, I’m just excited to to be excited again.

I’m guessing Narduzzi will be getting a raise. Hard to imagine him tolerating a salary in the neighborhood of a basketball coach fresh to the power 5.

Comment by 2$Chuck 03.20.18 @ 7:21 pm

I personally could care less what Narduzzi can or can not tolerate when it comes to what Pitt pays a basketball coach. It’s not like he’s been lighting it up. Win something in the ACC – even a division title, and then come talk to me about what you’re willing to tolerate. I’m more than happy to “tolerate” a mid-pack finish from Pitt football this year, and that’s more than likely what I’ll get if things go well. From a coach that was fresh to the entire role of “head coach”in D1, I think that’s fair. From a compensation perspective it’s none of his business.

Total comp is what it is – I’d think there would be some leeway here. If Stallings were still around we’d be lucky to get a deal with Florsheim or Hush Puppies. Maybe Ben-Gay or LifeCall would step up: “Help! I’ve gone 0-19 in the ACC and I can’t get up…”

Although if Matta ends up here I’d better lay off that last one… 🙂

55 – Football is king. In the pecking order the head coach should be the highest paid. If you want a healthy athletic department football should always be the priority.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 03.20.18 @ 9:30 pm

Tossing Thabeets – Man I love that handle – I hear what you’re screamin’, but in this case I’d make an exception short term. Pitt basketball is a 5-alarm fire. Pitt football was merely smoldering when HCPN got here – Chryst had done a good job managing that situation. I’m sure Pat knows that it is in his best interest for Pitt not to be the laughing stock of the conference for any period of time in any sport. Ultimately, if he deserves it, I’d expect Pitt to pay, but the basketball problem looms large. Heinz field always looks empty and we’ve come to expect it, if not outright accept it. An empty Pete is a downright abomination – I think that’s a big part of what’s behind the willingness to spend some money on this hire. Right now I’d let the “Queen” call some shots for a year or two, but your point is understood. I certainly don’t want any of the money coming OUT of the football program!

Pitt Dreamer – Spinal Tap reference? Very nice 🙂 But what kind of budget will be there for the assistants? Actually, I’m not terribly concerned about that at the moment because i can’t imagine Hurley not making those needs crystal clear at this point.

So far I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how the process is gone. Still plenty of time to get sideways, but so far so good.
