Minor Coaching Search Notes

Nothing really to report or pass on. Just a couple articles and thoughts.

Eric Musselman is likely out of the running now. Simply because I doubt Pitt can wait for him now that he got Nevada into the Sweet 16. I mean, unless they KNOW they he is already in the can. Which I find highly improbable. Still, he seems like an amusing maniac.

Nate Oats got a bump in salary and an increased buyout from Buffalo before the NCAA Tournament. Even the local paper there, concedes that it means nothing.

The extension, signed March 8 during the Mid-American Conference Tournament, increased Oats’ annual base salary from $355,500 to $600,000, making him one of the higher-paid coaches in the league. (Akron’s John Groce is the top-paid MAC coach. He gets $800,000 next season from Illinois — which fired him last March — and $400,000 from Akron. After that, Akron pays him a $650,000 base.)

The buyout figure, though, is more significant than the salary.

All coaches have buyout details in their contracts, laying out what it will cost the coach to exit the contract early. The numbers are up for negotiation but are generally relative to the overall value of the deal.

If Oats were to leave for another job this offseason, his contract says he would owe UB $1 million. If he were to leave after next season, the figure shrinks to $500,000, and gets smaller in each following year…

Accounting for his base salary, benefits and opportunities for other income, that could Oats put in the range of $1 million a year, making him one of the highest-paid public employees in the entire state.

And yet, big-time college basketball programs would look at that number and shrug. If they want Oats badly enough, his new extension isn’t stopping him from leaving.

That’s a buyout even UConn could handle.

Speaking of which, in a previous post I indicated UConn’s conference/money issues could hinder them from landing Dan Hurley. Other articles still suggest he favors the situation at UConn — at least in the short term. Which makes sense given the state Pitt is in. The questions surrounding UConn with the FBI investigation and the NCAA will still give him pause… Or a good excuse to leave for another job sooner then expected.

And now, because his damn name keeps coming up for reasons I can’t fathom. A bit more on Sean Miller.

Let’s start with the basis of everything. Money.

Miller is currently under contract through May 31, 2022, a deal that pays him a guaranteed amount of $2.6 million plus bonuses, with $100,000 salary escalators added each fiscal year through 2020-21. He is also fully vested in $4.17 million worth of Western Refining Logistics stock, with payment due in May 2020. He’ll receive another $1.2 million of stock in 2022 if he stays until June 2020.

The father of former UA commit Brandon Williams said Miller told him earlier this month that he isn’t going anywhere, but the coach’s future has nonetheless been the subject of speculation. Some believe Miller will be considered at his alma mater, Pitt, which is looking for a coach to replace Kevin Stallings. Miller would owe the UA $500,00 if he leaves for another job. If the UA decides to move on from Miller, its financial obligation would range from nothing (if the coach is fired for cause) to $4.3 million (if it’s not for cause).

Between the FBI, NCAA, loss of this recruiting class and another flame-out in the NCAA Tournament. Well, I can imagine there are some Arizona fans that are starting to think that it might be time for a change.

Of course those first three items on the list might be an impediment to hiring the kind of coach they want. I can’t help but think that even if Miller wanted to get out ahead of the posse and Arizona wanted to move on from him, they might be stuck with each other while the FBI investigation and federal trial play out.

But this isn’t about Miller and Arizona. This is about Miller and Pitt.

Let me repeat.

NO.

Leave aside that he stayed before. Has repeatedly professed how much he wants to stay at Arizona. How his father loved to throw bombs at Pitt about the situation in Arizona being superior in terms of money, recruiting and ability to win — and that latter part is really true when you compare the PAC-12 to the ACC.

Even try to pretend that suddenly running to Pitt wouldn’t look like he was bailing on a mess at Arizona that he helped create.

I kind of got off a little twitter rant at the end of the week about not having Miller at Pitt. In no small part because I kept seeing the local media push the stupid idea.

Let me go through it. Pitt does not want anything coming close to hurting its reputation as a clean school and program.

After Dixon left, Pitt wouldn’t even look at Kevin Keatts because he was an assistant at Louisville when the stripper scandal happened. (Yes, there is the crony factor in the search, but Keatts wasn’t even considered because of the cloud over every Louisville assistant from that period) In what world does Pitt consider ANY coach (even an alum) who is very much wrapped up in an FBI investigation and court case? Even considering Miller isn’t taking a big swing for a coach. It is pouring gasoline over yourself and then dancing around a bonfire. You are begging for problems.

This isn’t presuming guilt on the part of Miller, by the way. It comes down to this.

1) Miller’s lead assistant for 10 years is up on federal charges.

2) NCAA holds head coaches responsible for their activities.

3) That means the penalties will follow Miller.

4) His culpability will not be resolved while Pitt is looking to hire a new head coach.

It can’t happen.

Thanks for the coaching search update. After all the success during Jamie Dixon’s tenure, it’s tough to fathom how far the Pitt basketball program has fallen. I guess all we can do is to wait and hope that they hire the right guy. Whoever comes in, is not going to have an easy road to getting the program back on its feet.

Comment by Justinian 03.19.18 @ 7:28 am

The fans are getting their hopes built up with the big names Crean (now off the table), Matta, & Hurley, but in reality it will probably be Oats or Odom because Pitt Never goes for the big/expensive hire.

Comment by Biff 03.19.18 @ 9:20 am

BTW i’m intrigued with Oats from what I’ve seen & read.

Comment by Biff 03.19.18 @ 9:25 am

Biff, I’m not sure about that, regarding fans’ expectations. I know that I for one do not want Matta and would have preferred others to Crean, I was glad when Georgia took Crean and themselves off the board. I saw a lot of others feel similarly. One thing is for sure though, no matter who is hired, there will be a lot of happy/excited fans, and a group that is disappointed/dejected, that’s life though I guess. Unfortunately, as with everything else in life, the Nancys voices are normally the loudest these days.

Comment by 1618mt 03.19.18 @ 9:27 am

I should clarify, I do not want Matta due to his health issues of course.

Comment by 1618mt 03.19.18 @ 9:28 am

All of the negative Nancies that complained about Stallings when he was hired were proven right. Sometimes when people have complaints, they are valid. Not every complainer is a Negative Nancy. I, for one, would complain if it’s Thad Matta. I don’t believe that he is the right person for this job now, and in 4 years time, I would be proven right. His health issues and she should make Pitt hesitate on hiring him. Oats or Musselman would be a better hire, I believe.

Comment by Ben F. 03.19.18 @ 9:47 am

In a repeat from a few days ago…… while I really don’t expect Hurley to come to Pitt, I have doubts he’ll go to UConn. How would any coach feel having to rebuild a team while being compared to the Women’s BB team?? Especially when the women’s team won their game last week by 88 points!!

Comment by mtoolmn 03.19.18 @ 9:48 am

No one thinks Dan can learn a few things from Geno? 🙂

I had an easier time seeing Crean as “the guy” vs. Hurley being “the guy” mostly because Crean has extinguished dumpster fires of similar magnitude before, and that’s really saying something. A lot of people don’t like the guy, and that’s fair for a lot of reasons, but he has some fairly unique credentials when it comes to this sort of thing.

Why can’t I ever seem to find myself embroiled in any good stripper scandals? I mean, if you’re going to go down, there might was well be strippers. If Miller goes down, he’ll wish there were strippers. And when you’re old, and people are asking what did you in?

“Strippers kid… it was the strippers…”

Comment by 55 03.19.18 @ 11:34 am

I want Matta but I’d be happy with Hurley, Mussellman and Oats as well. It shouldn’t be hard to get at least one of them … except, Pitt.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 03.19.18 @ 1:08 pm

If Matta could get things turned around, and I think that he could, he doesn’t have to be a “forever” coach. I think that’s what a lot of people overlook. We’re so used to the revolving door around here that the first thing that comes into people minds when it comes to a coach is “stability”. Rightfully so to an extent, but I’d take a guy who could re-route the program in 5 years or so before handing it off to the next “forever” coach in a much better situation. I joke about Matta’s health and it is a concern, but accommodations could be made in that regard. I liked Crean for some of the same reasons – these are uncharted waters for most “up-and-commers”. It’s one thing to take over a program that’s a little short on talent and direction in need of inspiration; it’s another thing entirely hop onto the Titanic post-iceberg thinking “I can fix this…”. The next coach is going to need thick skin and a strong stomach along with all the other requisite qualities.

Comment by 55 03.19.18 @ 1:53 pm

Always appreciate your insights Chas, as I consider Pitt Blather to be one of the best Pitt blogs on the net, but I think you’re off base regarding the Sean Miller stuff.

1) Regarding him leaving Arizona – This time is MUCH different than the last time around. It appears that AZ may be willing (and possibly WANTS) to move on from Miller. Also, the buyout information that you quoted differs from all the information I’ve seen to this point. From what I’ve seen, Arizona IS on the hook for his buyout only if they fire him WITH cause (ie: FBI investigation), while if they were to fire him NOT FOR cause (ie: performance), they are off the hook completely. If that is indeed the case, his 1st round ouster this year gives them the crack in the door to give him the boot for under-performing instead of the FBI investigation. Given where they stand as a program right now with their starters headed for the NBA and the recruiting class in shambles after news broke of the FBI, this is a perfect chance for them to look elsewhere. Miller has to know this, so it makes sense that he’d be much more willing to look at other opportunities at this point in time than back when we hired Stallings.

2) The NCAA punishment Miller would receive would probably be nothing more than a minor setback for Pitt if he came here. Jim Boheim was suspended for 9 ACC games due to the issues at Syracuse a couple years ago. Pitino was suspended 9 games. Larry Brown at SMU was suspended 5 games. Given that this investigation is targeting SO MANY of the top NCAA basketball programs, I just don’t see the NCAA coming down with a hammer on this one. Even if he got 15-20 games, would it really matter in the long term to Pitt? Heck, even if the man gets suspended for a full year, that’s nothing if it means Pitt is getting one of the top 15-20 coaches in the nation.

3) Miller has a squeaky clean record to this point at Xavier and Arizona. The NCAA declined to even suspend him when the FBI reports broke and AZ even allowed him to continue coaching this year after he gave them his side of the story. ESPN has changed their story a few times, I just don’t think if there is indeed an audio recording of Miller agreeing to pay a player, that they would have allowed him to continue coaching.

With that said, Miller should be slotted behind Thad Matta and Danny Hurley in the pecking order, but I have serious doubts as to whether or not the Panthers can land either one of those two. If they strike out on Matta/Hurley, then I think they really have to give a serious consideration to pulling the trigger on a proven commodity like Miller over going for one of the stretch candidates like Oats/Musselman, etc.

Comment by Fear the Stache 03.19.18 @ 3:54 pm

Report has Hurley close to signing with UCONN. Better go for Oats quick. Pitt is never able to hire big name coaches. Got to find a Jay Wright type for us.

Comment by Biff 03.19.18 @ 5:18 pm

Chas, almost forgot how smart you are in Basketball. Pus you are just plain smart. No old guys for me. Why is no one talking about Bobby Hurley? Oats was hired by Bobby and the recruits are Bobby’s. However I’m sure Oats did a great job recruiting.

Hurley name means recruits listen.

Comment by Grandfather 03.19.18 @ 5:34 pm

Oats is a blue collar/work ethic guy. I believe he is a coach the fans could get behind.

Comment by Biff 03.19.18 @ 5:41 pm

Then why not Pitino? What’s a couple of whores and an affair? 🙂

Slippery slope. Lyke was a compliance wonk at OSU – I can’t see her getting along well with any coach that’s been sanctioned over any type of issue – NCAA or otherwise. I’m not putting Miller into the same realm of debauchery as Pitino – but where do you draw the line? With an alum?

Look – I eat my own dog food – if Miller ends up back at Pitt I’ll be excited about it, but then I’m all for throwing caution to the wind and making a big splash hire no matter who it offends as long as it benefits Pitt basketball. PSU lost the moral high ground forever and WVU never had one.

And as for Pitino… think of the strippers. The STRIPPERS for cryin’ out loud!!!!! 🙂 It’s ALWAYS better with strippers! 🙂

Comment by 55 03.19.18 @ 5:53 pm

To a large extent Pitt is similar to the Pirates. Cheap and not ready to make a jump into the big time. They were pushed into paying Jamie because of his record. Not paying Stallings is just another indication of how cheap they are. They are getting all this ACC money so for once go for it. Whether he deserves it or not it was a contract and this is just making Pitt look bad. But I doubt it, a mid level coach or an assistant is coming our way and they will try to hype it. They knew in January that they were going to fire KS so they should of had someone in the wings. Prove me wrong, Surprise me PLEASE!!!

Comment by Jp 03.19.18 @ 6:11 pm

Sean Miller is trash. The newest rumor is Willard … The lack of enthusiasm for that hire is bordering on the Stallings hire, minus the rage.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 03.19.18 @ 6:16 pm

It have to admit, it just screams “PITT”. It will be like giving the keys to a nuclear reactor to a couple of grad students with purple hair for the weekend:

“She’s all yours. Have fun and no scratches!”

And then it it melts down and becomes so toxic that people stay away for decades.

Please be wrong….

Comment by 55 03.19.18 @ 6:30 pm

What if none of them want the Pitt job? Then what?

Comment by Dan 72 03.19.18 @ 7:46 pm

Why would Willard be a bad hire?? How many fairly qualified candidates do you think are out there right now that might actually want to come to this train wreck? Even the toxic disaster that is Sean Miller, he probably still wouldn’t want the job. Beggers can’t be choosers.

Comment by Coach Ditka 03.19.18 @ 8:01 pm

Dan, It’s not as good a job as it was a few years ago. Jamie Dixon made the NCCA Tournament in his last year. The new coach coming in then had retruning seniors Young, Artis, and Jetter. We knew then that team had to do well and the new staff needed recruit well.

Comment by Justinian 03.19.18 @ 8:11 pm

I think the issue with Willard is that we’re only 3 coaches removed from his father being a monumental failure here. I understand he’s a different guy, but when there are hundreds of head coaches at the DI level, I just think you can hire the son of a guy who already failed at your school. That hire would go over terribly with the fan base, and sadly, at this point, they really need to make a splash to appease the fans or else it’s going to be a sorry sight again at the Pete next year.

Comment by Fear the Stache 03.19.18 @ 8:27 pm

Tossing, that’a actually a really good synopsis, “bordering on Stallings, minus the rage”. Well said. I suspect Willard would be a better hire than Stallings, but not enough to make sense out of the Stallings firing rather than waiting another year. Frankly, I’d much see us take a chance with a smaller school type, like Grant or Oates, etc., than the Willard direction.

Comment by 1618mt 03.19.18 @ 8:29 pm

Had to go to RI to help my aging parents this weekend. Interestingly enough, my friends from HS (from the 80s!) who all went to URI actually were not as high on Hurley as I would have thought. The A-10 is not the ACC, they were unconvinced he could make the move.

Comment by DD 03.19.18 @ 8:29 pm

Take Stallings out of the picture since this is essentially a do over. Willard is not a better coach than Dixon nor does he have the potential to be. He is also 195-162 for his career. That’s as damn close mediocre as you can get … plus he’s dealing with his own little recruiting scandal. You don’t fire Dixon for Stallings then pay a $10M buyout to hire an average coach like Willard, whose dad failed miserably here.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 03.19.18 @ 8:32 pm

Again how do you make a “splash hire” when nobody that would fit that bill is going to come here?? I understand the failed Dad argument but honestly I don’t think a majority of the fan base even know who Ralph Willard is… anyone under 40 probably has no idea who he is or even recognize the name. As for KWs overall record, you have to look at where he coached and where they were when he got there. It’s not like he walked into Syracuse or UNC and posted a mediocre record. What I do like is his trend line from where he took the programs and it was a steady and consistent rise.

Comment by Coach Ditka 03.19.18 @ 8:51 pm

A new coach will be named on Tuesday one way or the other. Its Hurley’s for the taking, if we can pay more than UConn. which we should be able to.

Comment by Pitt Dreamer 03.19.18 @ 8:56 pm

Dreamer – I think a pay raise is important for Hurley but so is location. He seems comfortable in that Jersey-RI-NYC-CT corridor. Born and raised there. Went to college there. Coaches HS and college there. Don’t underestimate what being close to home means to some people.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 03.19.18 @ 9:00 pm

By now Lyke’s must know if Hurley wants the job or not.

Comment by Pitt Dreamer 03.19.18 @ 9:01 pm

As I asked on the POV:

Hypothetical question…who would be happy if we made the NIT next year? I’m not saying happy forever, just for the results next year.

Comment by panther94 03.19.18 @ 9:06 pm

I don’t think we see a new coach until Friday at the earliest. No way it happens tomorrow.

Comment by Coach Ditka 03.19.18 @ 9:06 pm

Comment by panther94 03.19.18 @ 9:26 pm

Coach, You’re probably right about the time frame. Let’s hope the committee gets it right, with the coach they hire.

Comment by Justinian 03.19.18 @ 9:31 pm

Amen Justinian. I think they know they’ve used their mulligan and this hire has to be a good one. Hopefully they are doing all of the hard work behind the scenes. No leaks besides Crean and Matta who both probably leaked their own interviews. lol

Comment by Coach Ditka 03.19.18 @ 9:36 pm

Tossing- I think your correct, he is an Eastern person and U Conn would be an easy recruiting task for him. Not sure if the conference makes any difference to him as long as he can take them to the NCAA’s like he did for Rhode Island.

Comment by Pitt Dreamer 03.20.18 @ 1:27 am

This hire is not all about the X’s and O’s and won/loss record in the short run.

It is about rebuilding their reputation.

It is about giving the fan base some hope.

It is about putting butts in the seats at the Pete.

It is all about the Sizzle and less about the meat.

Oats/Grant/Musselman/Odom fit that bill.

Williard is left over meatloaf.

Comment by Tommymac 03.20.18 @ 3:02 am

Odom really?? He’s a flash in the pan. One upset win and you’re ready to pony up a pile of cash and hand the keys over to him? Look at Dudes resume. He has exactly 2 years of head coaching experience at Lenoir-Rhyne (where’ve right that is???) and UMBC. Gotta love when people become infatuated with the name of the day. Compare resumes with Willard and it’s not even close.

Comment by Coach Ditka 03.20.18 @ 4:03 am

Agree with Coach D about Odom. Might be good/great some day but he caught lightning and is not proven enough yet…not my choice even if it “looks” better than Willard…though I DO think “look” matters a ton this time around.

Comment by tvax1 03.20.18 @ 7:24 am

Coach – it’s about potential and creating excitement for the program. Odom is not a flash in the pan. He has coaching pedigree from his dad. He took a D2 team to the quarterfinals in his only season there. He took a 7 win team to 20 wins and school record for wins in season 1 and improved the win total and got to the NCAA’s in year 2 with one of the biggest upsets of all time … That is exactly the type of coach that should be moving up and is 10 fold more exciting than hiring Willard.

How is that a flash in the pan?

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 03.20.18 @ 9:47 am

Sorry but coaching D2 for one season and 2 years in the American East Conference is nothing I’m all that excited about. Listen to Tim Benz podcast yesterday that someone posted here. Pretty much sums up exactly my thoughts. Remember all of those other hot name Cinderella coaches from years past that got a job out of a few tournament wins? Exactly. And pedigree means little to nothing in coaching. It just doesn’t translate. If that’s the case, let’s go find Dean Smith Jr or John Wooden III.

Comment by Coach Ditka 03.20.18 @ 9:57 am

“Creating excitement” is good for one day to win the press conference but in a few weeks Ryan Odom will be forgotten and we’re left with a big gamble that most assuredly can’t be fired without having at least 4 years. Not a gamble I’d be willing to take. What does he know about recruiting against the big boy programs or competing against legit national title contenders every night in league play. In the AEC and division 2 very little separates these teams in terms of talent so making quick improvements is not a major accomplishment like it might be at a big time D1 school where there are big talent gaps between the haves and the have nots.

Comment by Coach Ditka 03.20.18 @ 10:07 am

The point is Pitt needs a public relations win.

Any coach they hie will be gone – either through achievemnt or failure – in 4 to 5 years max.

The fans and supporters need excitement in this hiring process- whether it is Oates or Odom or Grant…

Hiring a Williard type will show that the BoT is back to business as usual and will continue to put athletics on a back burner.

Comment by Tommymac 03.20.18 @ 10:14 am

I don’t see any evidence that any of those 3 are “big splash hires” that are going to whip fans into a frenzy. Maybe it’s just me but I’m not seeing it.

Comment by Coach Ditka 03.20.18 @ 10:18 am

Let’s not forget, howland and Dixon were far from big splash hires and they worked out pretty well. In fact, most people hated the Dixon hire – pretty much the complete opposite of exciting. Excitement for a week does nothing for the program. Winning is what ultimately brings excitement to a program.

Comment by Coach Ditka 03.20.18 @ 10:22 am

This is headed for disaster because fans see these lists that everyone has and get excited about a few names – most of who are pipe dreams and then when Pitt allegedly whiffs on options A, B, C and D we are left having to accept option E. But we have no clue of the process and don’t even know if the first four options were even realistic. I think a lot of people have to reset expectations. This is a tough sell and we are probably not going to get the named coaches that we want. It will be someone none of us are even talking about at this point.

Comment by The Ghost of Billy Gaines 03.20.18 @ 10:26 am

For as much as we all hated Stallings and the press conference was a complete bomb, let’s be real, the Pete would have been packed if he was winning. That’s what it comes down to… winning. Forget this “hot name” hire and winning the press conference and focus on finding someone best suited to win and turn this team around.

Comment by Coach Ditka 03.20.18 @ 10:27 am

Exactly Ghost of Billy. Even throwing money at some of these guys might not be enough to lure them to Pitt. If they are desirable coaches they most certainly have options and one of their best options may be to hold out until after this FBI scandal shakes out. There could be a lot of unexpected coaching vacancies coming up at some nice landing spots. They could hire Joe from Turtle Creek, if he wins people will come back and be excited.

Comment by Coach Ditka 03.20.18 @ 10:34 am

It apprear like Dan Hurley will take the UCoon job or stay at Rhode Island. ESPN’s Jeff GFoodman make some interesting comments about Pitt’s search. I was surprized considering everything that Goodman said he would take Sean Miller. Link to Pittsburgh Sports Now below:

I agree Odom was a flash in the pan. I mean come on he takes down a #1 seed then loses to K State. The names Hurley, Oats, Odom, Grant and others are being thrown into the the Pitt dumpster fire list and not doubt there could be others we don’t know about. Can any of them put out the fire and raise the building from ashes in a short amount of time.

For me Mussleman would seem best to do that job. So the man was taped throwing a few F bombs at halftime. I guess no other coaches have ever did that. Will Pitt be abhored by that who knows. But Musselman has a history of coming in and improving basketball teams. What he did at Nevada was done in three years. That speaks volumes to me. Could he do that for Pitt, who can tell but I do know he would work his tail of to do it. The man lives and breathes basketball.

He stepped into NCAA basketball in the 2012-13 an assistant at Arizona State and became associate HC in 2013-14, associate HC at LSU in 2014-2015 and has been HC at Nevada since 2015. The man knows every facet of basketball and has been successful at it. I believe he has the ability to turn Pitt around. He has been my choice from the beginning and hopefully he will be the one.

Comment by kiskiminetas 03.20.18 @ 11:38 am

Thx Coach D. I don’t know Heather very well, but I suspect she’s smart enough NOT to worry about: (1) making a splash hire, (2) hiring a ‘big name’, or (3) winning the Public Relations/Press for a day.

I’m not sure who the best hire would be, or who would be the best fit for the program, but frankly I’d rather take a shot with a hot young coach like Grant (apparently not interested) or even a guy like Oats or Odom, etc., then try to go safe with a guy like Willard. I find Willard to be a poor man’s Tom Crean, safe hire, probably would do a decent job, meh. I’d get behind him if we hired him, but to be honest I doubt we’re considering it anyway at this point.

Comment by 1618mt 03.20.18 @ 11:43 am

To be clear, I’m not advocating for Odom but he’s a much better hire than Willard. Odom would probably be 4th or 5th on my list. Having said that, Willard is what he is and getting to the tourney is not enough for Pitt fans, as we saw with Dixon. Willard has shown nothing as far as building a team for a tourney run. And that’s what this hire really comes down to. Who can build Pitt into a team that can make a run. Consistently getting to the tourney is not enough. Pitt fans want someone who can provide a spark in a one and done format. I’m sorry, but Willard does not offer that.

I’d rank my picks as:

1. Matta
2. Mussellman
3. Hurley
4. Oats
5. Odom

Not ranked: Crean, Miller, Willard

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 03.20.18 @ 12:03 pm

Tossing, I really don’t know what to think anymore. It seems to me that ALL the above are better options than the guy they settled on the last time around. I’m not sure Matta wants the job and I think Hurley will wind up at UConn. That would leave us Mussleman, Oats and Odom from your list.

Comment by Justinian 03.20.18 @ 12:17 pm

Willard will not get the job as he is also tied to the FBI investigation.

Chas, you are one of the most even-keeled and reasonable writers in the Pitt sports blogosphere, so I’m glad that we have the same view on Miller. Even aside from my personal feelings, it’s clear he’s not in the running. I see his name on boards and Twitter all the time and I wonder if I’m on crazy pills.

No doubt, lets stick to reality:

Reality is, Pitt has 100 way they can screw this up.

Getting any of those in TT’s list, including his Not Ranked, would be a victory here. Anyone NOT on this list is the problem!!!

To me, there is no ranking…just get any one of those please!!

Justinian – I’d be happy with anyone from my list. I’d even be okay with Miller although I don’t think that’s a possibility. I don’t see Willard as much of an upgrade over Stallings at all. Willard would not even be in my top 10. I really don’t understand how you can pay $10M to buy someone out and end up with Willard. I’m having a real hard time rationalizing that.

Once Hurley to UConn becomes official, and I’m just guessing here that it will, I think things will be put back in perspective. Hiring one of those up and coming head coaches (the Hurleys, Mussellmans, etc.) would be considered an absolute best case for Pitt. Miller’s not happening- no more words on him. Pitt is not the kind of place the top 5 or so up and coming head coaches go. That’s always been the case. And no, being in the ACC barely moves the needle when all the factors in taking a job is considered. Some of these names, they’re just very “reach for the stars” like. I don’t think it happens. Reading some of these national college writers brings levity to the situation. A lot of them don’t see any of those types at Pitt, and I’m inclined to agree.

Don’t get me wrong, if they F this up, I’ll be livid because we decimated a rebuild. I’m not just as hopeful. I see a Duzzy type- a knowledgeable, fiery assistant some place that ends up at Pitt.

Bleacher report just reported Pitt has offered Hurley a multiyear contract for $3+ million/year. We better pray he takes it, it’ll be quite a slap in the face if he ends up at UConn for less money!

But if Pitt did offer $3+ million a year, all the talk that they are not serious and are cheap needs to go away. If true this means they are going for it.

Ghost – Agreed. If Hurley says no, it’s because he wants to stay closer to his roots.

$3M should be enough to get just about anyone on the market right now IF that person is willing to come. That being said, lets not repeat the mistake of paying good money for bad. Stallings wasn’t cheap – Pitt could have gotten a lot more for THAT money.

Honestly, $3M sounds about right – I don’t think Crean would have come here for less, and I don’t know what Matta would have wanted, but I have to guess somewhere in that neighborhood. It’s a good neighborhood – I’m just not sure I want Nate Oats in it at the moment. I’m a huge advocate of getting what you pay for, and I’ve been hyper-critical of Pitt underpaying in the past, but I don’t want to overpay either.

I don’t think it’s a “slap in the face” if he doesn’t take it. We’ve got a real sh*t show here at the moment – it’s not for the faint of heart. Anyone who walks into this better have both eyes wide open and be willing to work hard for a few years with potentially not much in the way of results. Not everyone is up for that gig. That being said, if someone manages to pull it off, the sky is the limit for them.
